  • The Godox Flashpoint Xplor AD100 flash is a small round head can-shaped photography strobe that is super small and portable as photography flashes go, so it makes sense to use very portable lightweight soft box modifiers with it instead of a stupid heavy clunky S-bracket. Here are some great flash modifiers to use with the AD100 that don't require and S-Bracket or Bowens mount.

    I have a cheap softbox similar to the cheap one shown in the early part of this video. I took it out of its bag exactly once, and fumbled around with it in someone's house. It was awkward and I wound up not even using it. I used the S-bracket with it exactly once. So none of that was cheap, in fact it was a waste of money. If you have a studio, where lights seldom need to be broken down (?) then I can see where cheap = good. That said, if someone has a studio and regularly uses lights, a more expensive folder paid for itself long ago.
    I'm attracted to the run-and-gun ease of use here, and I think I'm now willing to pay for it.

    Great video. I was in the same boat with buyers remorse over my bulky, clunky S-brackets, that long top screw annoys me to no end. For those of us on the other side of the pond though, this Angler Fastbox is "strikingly similar" to the SMDV Speedbox Flip28G. I didnt want to buy yet another softbox, but these things are fantastic for portability! SMDV by the way sells all kinds of replacement parts and adapters for these boxes, which is handy. That Angle Grip light stand adapter can be purchased separately and they even have square, rectangular, and strip boxes with the same basic design. That said, they'll still have to bury me with my trusty umbrella softboxes, I'll never let them go!

    • @tpe4ever
      @tpe4ever 11 месяцев назад

      SMDV is built the same way, but has FAR more options with interchangeable accessories between Angler and SMDV. Hard magnetic attached gels, larger sizes up to 43", large strips, 1x3 strips, lanterns, as well as a larger version of this exact design which is their new 32". The 32" is my new go-to lighting setup for a single key light. It's big enough to not have hard lines in the face. They also offer grids, and cost slightly less. Angler is nice but they hardly offer a full range of options.

    I use the Angler Fastbox Pistol Grip on an AD200, then I used the metal back plate of an AD-S17 and a 3d printed adapter ring to attach Godox Mount softboxes like the AD-S60S - nice small modifier and no need for an S-bracket. The pistol grip angle adjustment can't bear the weight of the larger AD-S85 softbox, so I tend to use those with an AD300 or AD360ii (with my 3d adapter)

    • @markintosh13
      @markintosh13 Год назад +1

      @@herbrockone5068 yes, the AS-S17 backplate uses the barebulb head, the 3dprinted speedring attaches to metal backplate with the bulb in the middle, and the Godox mount softboxes attach to the speedring - no large bowens mount soft box, no s-bracket.

    I purchased the AD-AB adapter ring along with the Bowens mount adapter ring for the AD400 Pro. They work together for the AD300 Pro’s. I have a couple of the S Brackets too. They are big, heavy and clunky. But I would like honk they would sell an adapter ring for the 100. Idk, but it would make sense. And they’re nowhere near as heavy and clunky as the SBrackets, and they attach directly to the light and never have to be removed.

    Hi Markus, I love your obsession with small and light. This fast softbox looks pretty good, as does Cara - excellent as always.
    One thing though in any real wind (real world outdoors) a small stand with a 28" box is easy prey to wind and a smashed AD100/200. IMO as case of when, not if. This aside from an assistant to hold light/stand how do you ensure no 'blow overs' without adding additional (heavy) counterweight ballast. Even water bags are messy inconvenient and contradict your travel light approach. Just wondering how you deal with this issue?

    S-bracket is not the lightest or smallest. But it is sturdy and strong for the purpose.
    It is excellent when having multiple different lights and that one Bowens mount.
    But only if you have that extra mass and size dialed in for your flash setups.
    S-bracket works in studio or indoor location, but not so great for on-the-go. Like traveling.

      Why it stays home in my home studio. Good for staying put. Not so much for mobile.

    • @paristo
      @paristo 9 месяцев назад

      @@DezSantana there is multiple different "mobile" setups.
      One can be where your move from location to location and you have couple big wheeled bags.
      Other is that you go to on-site from the car, so car is near by and you have lot of stuff in the car anyways.
      Some is that you set up to shoots in many locations in the day, but you still need more than just flash and camera, and you have one bigger bag.
      Etc.
      But it doesn't work when you have one passenger bag and you do not have even space for anything else than maybe one small umbrella.

      @@paristo I know how the S2 is used. I've had it for years. It's not compact, nor the perfect mobile option. I've used other adapters that worked better. This Angler product is intriguing.

      @@DezSantana those don't replace the S-bracket. They are different for purpose.
      The S-bracket is for other use than when traveling just with one backpack or so.
      There is reason why studios has different equipment than when going to multiple different on-sites.
      Sometimes you don't need sturdy, flexible and time saving option because it is heavier and bigger.
      It is like monopod vs tripod vs string.
      Monopod is great when you run and gun, when you are moving, but in most traveling cases you just need string. But neither replaces a good tripod.
      I pack lot of stuff on my car just to be prepared for anything. I have from lightweight solutions to all the way to C-stands, and when I know I need it, I have studio stand as well for the camera.
      I have tools with me, from saws to ropes to drills etc. Because at any given time I can build all kind supports and get lights to temporal places for the effect.
      I have even a custom made 33 ft (11m) long monopod with capability to hold 2,4 kg weight straight to side, and it has only 2,8kg mass as made from aluminum, collapsible to just 2,6 meters.
      Even regardless I loved traveling with just a funnybag size bag, few lenses, flash, batteries etc, you are at best limited to be capable work in any situation. It is just another end of compromise spectrum, and S-bracket does shift it more towards the possibilities.

    MarkusPix you are a really cool reviewer, I really like your videos. Tell me please, do you also think that umbrella softboxes are bad (like Godox). It is better to use parabolic umbrellas like ub85/105/130 because they have a long needle where to hang the flash. Therefore, it is better to fill the modifier over its entire area. Right?

    How is the light output with the the angler no diffusion vs bare head? I would love something like this kit but also looking for the max output configuration when I need it. Basically use the anglers as a big reflector. Usually I get better output from an open softbox than even the polished reflectors.

    • @MarkusPix
      @MarkusPix  Год назад +1

      The strongest output is simply using the 100 as is out of the box. Angler diffusion cannot be removed, a silver umbrella is all you need if that's the way you want to go

    Have you ever tried Magmod with the AD200? Seems a quick set up. I would use the extension to get the weight to the base of the stand. How often do you use the extension or are you done with AD200s?

    • @MarkusPix

      No this isnt made for the 200 bar bulb, I tried. There are adapters that hold the fresnel and round heads, but the shape of the bar bulb head wont fit, so I shaved off the side knob and forced it in, but the results were not optimal, so its not recommended to even try. This softbox is best used with an AD100
