I appreciate your patients waiting for the whole experiment before posting. It's horrible watching a video for people to not finish. I have tried several of your experiments and have been successful. Thank you for your work.
I did the soil method and put a clear top on mine from day one..they sprouted so much faster than without a top. almost like a mini greenhouse...or maybe it should be called the micro greens mini green house haha
I really appreciate the time you have taken to record the growth of the sprouts by time. Thank you for that for this and the other sprouts you have videos for. I suspect the reason that sprouts on the paper toweling grew differently was because there were differences in how well they got the water they needed. You might need thicker paper toweling or some way to ensure that all the seeds were in good contact with their water source. Those in the soil had better constant access to water, I think, and that's why there was a difference.
I've been sprouting, for years, but never used the soil method. It does seem to make the seeds "happier". My 6 year old grandson & I will get a (no soil) batch of broccoli sprouts started this afternoon. Thank you my friend, for the great video!
Thank you for the detalled video. I planted some in my first-time-ever little garden a week ago, in rows like if they were carrots! LOL ! So my next batch will look more like a carpet of sprouts... I am impressed that you take time to read and answer most of the comments; that is really nice of you !
Thanks for this very helpful comparison between soil/not soil method. Broccoli sprouts are so popular because of it's content of sulforaphane, here's a video that shows how you can increase the amount of this compound in the sprouts before you eat them.
kuodukas Not sure there is no reply button under your comment. I hope you get this response. Sunlight is not required, natural lights by your window is good enough. I usually keep mine away from lights for about 3-4 days. Lack of lights make the sprouts grow tall seeking lights, and this is good when sprouting. You can definitely sprout this in Winter because it's done indoor.
Khang Starr khang, youd be better off to not use drawer organizers and other plastics-too much bpa and phthalates will leach into the sprouts and then your body! glass is best or if you cant food grade plastic
Excellent video, covering the whole process. I definitely try to grow it as it is cheaper and healthier way to get sprout with many health benefits. Thank you for sharing it with us.
I love both methods, they both are easy to follow. but the one with organic dirt looks much healthier and beautiful. Great presentation. Thank you I will try myself definitely. Asha Meht
Well done! enjoyed your time lapsed demo - you explained it all very clearly and without any bias. I would just mention that soil containing nutrients will provide additional support over a paper towel(s) and will improve the taste after about 7 or 8 days when the sprouts change into true micro-leaves and of course that means a greater weight of crop per individual seed.
Hello Khang What an awesome channel! I just recently discovered your channel from another youtuber name Mike. I'm so excited to get started. I wanted to know how long the greens keep in the refrig. and if you ever have any to go bad while sprouting? How often do you replant? What other greens are good for indoors? Thanks in advance for any help to get me off to a good start!
Thank You Khang...Good Job showing how it's done. I am stoked to start sprouting again especially since I can't find Brocco Sprouts in the stores anywhere where I used to buy them. Brocolli sprouts have the highest sulfuraphane (sp?) of any sprout ..I consider them a cancer fighting food par excellence. They are right up there with watercress for health benefits IMHO. Thanks again!
I am going to save one of my Parmesan containers to put the seeds in. I think this would make it easier for me to shake them. BTW, you're videos are very nice and informative, and I really appreciate your teaching style. Have you thought of teaching at schools?
You may want to experiment with using a liquid organic fertilizer at half strength with the soilless method of growing. Maybe not at first but after the second or third day use a little fertilizer, I would think it would mimic the benefits of the soil.
Thank you so much for the video and the all the information. I am new to this and want to try and see if I can grow my own sprouts. You make it look very easy. Have a great day.
I bet you could water with hydroponic nutrients to increase the nutrient contents in the non soil method...similar to growing hydroponically 😉. Clean and nutritious!
Nice video. Also for those who plant the seeds over without soil, if you're concerned about nutrients, you can spray them with a nutritious spray of water too. I use llama poop water, and water with that and it is like food for the plants. Still though great video :)
The sprouts in the non soil method is in a clear container. So more light means they don’t need to reach for the light. A better comparison would’ve been 2 containers that are the same. Also, you can add a bit of nutrients to the paper towel medium to boost its growth.
I've seen other videos where people use 4 layers of paper towels on the bottom. And used unbleached towels. I don't know if it makes a difference but it could be that the thicker layer give the roots more to grab onto.
Khang, I was having a hard time in finding organic broccoli sprouts in my neighborhood and thinking about it must be the time I try to grow them. Your clip shows me it is not that difficult, great encouragement to those like me, who have never done it before. Many many thanks. What soil did you use? I just have to follow your path (you can tell I have no creativity for gardening/growing^^! Btw, those I get from the market are really light green and very tiny. I wonder when it is the best time to eat them, in terms of nutrient value.
+Christy Lim You can use any brand of organic potting mix from Home Depot or Lowe's. As far as best time to eat them, it really depends, but I like them best after 7 days.
hello - great video, I've been trying to grow broccoli microgreens with no good results. Can you elaborate on where you are keeping the sprouts, in a no sunlight place and is it covered? and when do you leave them on the counter near the sun? after 4 or 5 days? so in a shaded place for the first 4-5 days and then out in the open near light afterwards? thank you!
To be a completely accurate comparison I think you should have put the sprouts on the paper towels in the same spot (close to light) that you used with the soil ones. Maybe the extra light was responsible for the difference in color and density.
i think just like most plants. If you intend to grow and eat in sprout stage as in less than a week, any medium wont make much difference. I think after the week the plant needs more nutrients and that's when soil medium may show a bigger positive growth difference.
Could you please mention where you get your organic broccoli seeds? I bought 2lb bag of it, which seem to be defective seeds: When I soak them they absorb all the water, stick to each other and become like jelly. Thanks!
Hey Khang Starr! I have a bunch of super spicy peppers with lots of seeds. And I was wondering if you've ever tried growing & eating microgreens from your peppers? Is it even "ok" to eat pepper microgreens? Are there any vegetables or herbs that should Not be eaten this way? If you decide to try it, please make a video, I would love to know how it goes!
Your presentation very clear and nice. Thanks! Question: After you harvest the first time do you re-use the same soil a second time? How many times can you re-use it? Paul
Great video. Great voice. I have a little question: Can we also eat the tiny roots of the sprouts by washing off the soil? You really are an excellent teacher. Thank you very much for the video.
difficult to tell if the soil or non soil is better since you used two different pans. The plastic pan is nearly twice as high as the soil pan. Maybe that might have made a difference, especially in the corners and edges where you noted less growth?
Thank you for this. I have tried the mason jar method without much success. Mine are wet, yellow, stubby and straight up trash compared to your beauties. I’m going to do your method right away and will let you know how they turned out.
Very informative video! With the non-soil method, would you rinse the sprouts before eating? I have a friend that grows sprouts in a jar and she rinses them daily.
I wonder if you could use Miracle Grow or some other plant food in the container without soil as I was curious as to whether those sprouts would have any nutritional value from just growing in water. I would also use distilled or spring water, nothing out of the tap with chlorine.
I think seeds come with a lot of nutrition packed inside - and sprouting increases that - so I think sprouting is worth the time and you do get nutrition from the seeds alone
So, do you ONLY start spraying them with water after 3 days? If I understood correctly, you spray down the seeds initially, then put them aside for 3 days, and on the third day then you start spraying with water twice a day? Also, at any point do you cover it? Do you re-use the soil?
Is it always assumed that people who sprout and grow micro greens don't have any money. to buy grow trays ? LOL I think they are well worth the small investment. They have drain holes and if you get the right ones, you will be able to lift the entire crop out for easy cutting. They are also uniform in size and I put mine on inexpensive plastic shelving that I bought. Just sharing my experiences.
I just fold gauze over three times and use that... it sucks up the water. I have a questions though... how do you "harvest" them? It seems every time I try to, I have trouble cutting it off because of the trey's sides...
I have never heard of broccoli sprouts. Do you just cut them and put in sandwich or salads? I have seeds but I haven't use them because I don't like broccoli but maybe their leaves might not have that strong tastes of broccoli. I would like to try this. Thanks for sharing. Peppers and Strawberries
Yes, I usually cut them and put them on sandwiches and salads. They don't taste anything like the actual broccoli and are very nutritious as well. Read about their benefits and you will surely want to try them =)
Khang Starr That's exactly what I'm looking for. I hate the taste of broccoli but I was thinking maybe their leave doesn't have the same test. I going to try it today and came back to your video because I like they way you explain. Thanks
Can you advise on why my broccoli sprouts leaves stay closed even with one full day of sun light. I sprout over and over and I get the same results each time. I use regular tap water, maybe that's it ?
honey roy If you compost the used soil, you can reuse it at a later time. You probably can't use it immediately because the remaining roots will rot after you harvest the sprouts.
Mine grew fine in Indian winter but now since onset of summer they keep molding batch after batch. Any tips to grow in summer almost 40 degrees Celsius . Also if you don't cover what if insects or germs come in contact with them?
+Mehta Parag Mold usually forms when humidity is too high and lack of air circulation. As you mentioned, cooler temperature works well. I grow mine indoors so the temperature is always cool and no insects.
After harvesting first batch, can we put 2nd batch new seeds in the same soil with old roots? Or do we have to throw away the old soil and start from the beginning for new batch?
Hey Khang Starr, one more question, why do you plant the seeds in a tray without holes, and other times you use those that have holes? It's a bit confusing for me.
Thank you Khang! I truly enjoy your videos! An I also feel that anything you plant just grows endlessly. You have an angel's touch for nature, which also means you have a great karma. Thank you for sharing your good energy!! :)
Hello Khang, I am trying the brocoli for the first time and it' s day 6 and they are like your day 3 ! What did I do wrong ? It's been cold here (today just 12 celcius) and I am wondering if temperature has to do with it. You are in Texas and it's hot and dry . Even the water doesn't dry enough for me to spray as you did . I maybe was wrong covering them with a cloth . Please could you give me an advice ? Thanks a lot for your teaching.
Fresh seeds is the most important factor for good germination. If you use seeds that are older, they usually take a little longer. Temperature is also a factor. I grow mine indoor at 73F.

is there risk of mold during the process?

hello -

the container used for " no soil" method and soil method, both no need to poke hole at bottom for water drainage ?
Thank you so much for making this video. I can do this!!
Very good video. Hiw is the taste between 2 methid? Thank you
Hi again Khang, do you eat your sprouts uncooked? Is there a danger in consuming bacteria?
Thank you!
+Miriana Rogic Yes, I eat them raw and sometimes cooked. As for the danger, I think there are many topics on this online you can research.
I know but I just wanted to know what is your opinion on it.
What do you think about hydrogen peroxide and useage of it when it comes to sprouting.
Thanks
how do you prevent small flies from infesting these? do you sanitize the seeds from pathogens?

Anh có thử trồng Broccoli trồng hủ thủy tinh chưa Anh ơi? Nếu có, Anh chia sẻ kinh nghiệm với ạ. Thanks Anh
Old School Khang!! Do you still use this method??
Your presentation very clear and nice. Thanks! Question: After you harvest the first time do you re-use the same soil a second time? How many times can you re-use it?
Paul
You can't reuse the soil unless you compost it. Remaining soil and roots make excellent compost for your garden.
Thanks for sharing. I'm going to try this.
You're welcome.
Great video. Great voice. I have a little question: Can we also eat the tiny roots of the sprouts by washing off the soil? You really are an excellent teacher. Thank you very much for the video.
It's very difficult to wash the soil off the roots once they are all tangled, but if you could, then you can eat the entire plant.
Yes, you can. All part of the tiny greens are edible if you can clean it well.
difficult to tell if the soil or non soil is better since you used two different pans. The plastic pan is nearly twice as high as the soil pan. Maybe that might have made a difference, especially in the corners and edges where you noted less growth?

thank you I'm trying those next
relaxing voice to listen to :) Thanks!
Thank you. You made it seem so easy.
What kind of soil do you use?
Thank you for this. I have tried the mason jar method without much success. Mine are wet, yellow, stubby and straight up trash compared to your beauties. I’m going to do your method right away and will let you know how they turned out.
Ok, day 2 and I just took my container out of the dark. Sprouting is apparent 👌🏼and I’m super excited! Stay tuned for next update!
Update day 3 and 4 they continue to look amazing
Surprising how you get these results with no black out and weight. Have you ever done this with black out and weight?
I want to learn to Gerow sprouts. But buy seeds on lline not easy .
+Doan Nguyen go to Dr. Mercola's site and search on seeds
You can also grow them in a mason jar easily.
Would have liked to see how you cut them
What if you use a NUTRIENT SPRAY instead of just water for the paper towel method? Also, have you tried a sprouting base like COCO COIR or PEAT?
more minerals in the soil method, to be sure... thanks!
Very informative video! With the non-soil method, would you rinse the sprouts before eating? I have a friend that grows sprouts in a jar and she rinses them daily.
It's always good to rinse the sprouts before eating. Jar method is nice, but space is too limited, so I never use them.
I wonder if you could use Miracle Grow or some other plant food in the container without soil as I was curious as to whether those sprouts would have any nutritional value from just growing in water. I would also use distilled or spring water, nothing out of the tap with chlorine.
I think seeds come with a lot of nutrition packed inside - and sprouting increases that - so I think sprouting is worth the time and you do get nutrition from the seeds alone
solid video, great work, and great info.
Great video! Can you grow the sprouts in a glass container without putting a piece of paper towel?
Can I use that seed for planting it and had a broccoli flower
Now I know how to grow my brocolli seeds. Really appreciate this. Thank you!
You're welcome!
So, do you ONLY start spraying them with water after 3 days? If I understood correctly, you spray down the seeds initially, then put them aside for 3 days, and on the third day then you start spraying with water twice a day? Also, at any point do you cover it? Do you re-use the soil?
How about spraying nutrients in the paper towel one?
thanks for sharing
after the sprouts have grown, can you use the seeds to sprout again or do you need to purchase more seeds?
Thank you.
looks lovely
thank you so much plant bro!
Is it always assumed that people who sprout and grow micro greens don't have any money. to buy grow trays ? LOL I think they are well worth the small investment. They have drain holes and if you get the right ones, you will be able to lift the entire crop out for easy cutting. great tps thanks for sharing!
I just fold gauze over three times and use that... it sucks up the water. I have a questions though... how do you "harvest" them? It seems every time I try to, I have trouble cutting it off because of the trey's sides...
Hello, good video thank you. Do you have to water the soil sprouts when you leave them in the dark for the first few days ?
hello...Question. Did you cover these trays at any time
+Sweet “SG Style” C No, I did not. I just left them in an area with very little lights.

Wonderful video! How long do they last for?
Can you advise on why my broccoli sprouts leaves stay closed even with one full day of sun light. I sprout over and over and I
get the same results each time. I use regular tap water, maybe that's it ?
I did it on soil, it's the 4th day and they still look like day 1, not even one came out of the shell, have the seeds expired or something?
Thank You!
how many days after sprouts came in non soil method reply??
i like your videos very much
do you cover them when setting them under counter?
Good info. Comparison.
Great sharing Khang. I plan to grow the sprout with sponge/foam.
Have you try before?
Thanks! I haven't tried sprouting with sponge/foam. Are they food grade and safe to use? I'd love to see how they work.
There are some food grade sponge/foam with FDA approved in the market.
I heard a lot people start using em but i haven't have any result yet.
Thank you. Awesome
Love it ! Cant wait to try growing them ! Thanks for your very detail video. Hee
You're welcome!
Khang Starr if im using soil, can i reuse them again to grow the microgreens.
honey roy If you compost the used soil, you can reuse it at a later time. You probably can't use it immediately because the remaining roots will rot after you harvest the sprouts.
Khang Starr thank you for replying.
Well done!
you're awesome! Thanks for this video. 😊👍
Would it help to drop a (human) multi-vitamin into the spray bottle?
Did you soak the seeds? If don´t it does take more time to grow, right?
Goodjob

inguva roopa No as the roots will rot and cause fungal growth
Hey Khang Starr, one more question, why do you plant the seeds in a tray without holes, and other times you use those that have holes? It's a bit confusing for me.
+Miriana Rogic With holes is preferred. I'm just showing people other cheaper options by recycling food containers.
Thank you Khang! I truly enjoy your videos! An I also feel that anything you plant just grows endlessly. You have an angel's touch for nature, which also means you have a great karma.
Thank you for sharing your good energy!! :)
Thanks for the kind words!

Fresh seeds is the most important factor for good germination. If you use seeds that are older, they usually take a little longer. Temperature is also a factor. I grow mine indoor at 73F.
What is the temperature range ideal for the sprouting?
Room temperature, between 73-75F
Is there any holes in it
