National Geographic Channel, also commercially abbreviated and trademarked as Nat Geo, is an American subscription channel, that airs non-fiction television programs produced by the National Geographic Society and other production companies. Like History and the Discovery Channel, the channel features documentaries with factual content involving nature, science, culture, and history, plus some reality programming.
The channel is owned primarily by Fox Cable Networks, a division of News Corporation. Its primary sister network worldwide, including the United States, is Nat Geo Wild, which focuses on animal programming, including the popular Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan. The National Geographic Channel's signature theme fanfare music, which is played at the beginning of many of the channel's television programs, is composed by Elmer Bernstein. Many variations have been done to the theme music over the years.

they have national geographic expedition cruises, I would be greatly disappointed if they never played this theme aboard the ship :) there are scientists on the cruises too who are there to do science, for example on the cruises to the antarctic they take ice core samples. On one national geographic expedition voyage to the islands off the coast of Los Angeles, they discovered a new species: a type of rattlesnake which is just as deadly but has no rattle! Apparently, in the absence of large mammals, they no longer needed it. I guess just be very careful that you are hiking well away from places where rattlesnakes would be found on that island! :-O

In the early seventies, the NG special was on CBS, later ABC. When a special was airing, there would be a bright red ribbon across the front cover of that month's magazine. Inside was a tearout sheet to place on top of your TV set to remind you to watch it. On the back was a state by state list of CBS affiliates in case you didn't know your local channel. But you still had to check locally for air time and participation.

This version started in 1975 when PBS and WQED picked up the rights to the series, acquiring it from ABC, but the very first version first debuted in 1966 on "Voyage of the Brigantine Yankee" on CBS.

0:05 That scene from Madagascar when Alex goes crazy and starts chasing Marty.
As someone not from the US (we didn't have National Geographic here), I only heard this theme in the Madagascar movie and didn't even know it was the National Geographic theme. So many references in Madagascar that I'm only understanding now.

The entire National Geographic theme plays in the Fantasyland attraction, Lisa Simpson Learns About The Ocean, which is located in Disneyland, the Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Shanghai Disneyland. But in Disneyland Paris, it is located in Discoveryland, where it is called "Dr. Fox's 'Science Must Continue' Center".

Thank you for sharing. This brings so much good feeling and nostalgia for me. National Geographic is a truly a gift to the whole world. Sunday mornings in India as a teen, mom is cooking great meal for lunch and in the lineup on TV were National Georgraphic, Spiderman, He-man, Star Trek and Cosmos by Carl Sagan. 😃Those were some truly amazing times!
