Lead singer Saiki, and 2nd vocals Miku, are the queens of harmonies! Any live performance on their official YT channel really shows it off, "Wonderland", "Manners", about Us", and "No God" are a great place to start, as well as the mv's for "Endless Story" and "Bubble". But honestly, anyone of Band-Maid's 100+ songs are definitely worth a listen!!! Enjoy👍👍🤘🤘🤘

I'd add 'Domination' to that list. The live video of that brilliantly shows off all the members and their amazing talent. I first found them through 'Thrill', but 'Domination' is the song that's made me a complete fan. Forget any gimmicks, this is a band of wonderfully kick-arse talent. Oh and I add the incredible acoustic session they did in 2021(?), particularly "Sayonakidori" which is beautifully stripped down to a trio and hauntingly sung by Miku - who usually sings harmonies to Saiki.

BAND-MAID is best appreciated live. They tend to use a lot of effects in studio recordings, but they don’t use them a lot in live shows, so you can hear their natural voices.
My vote’s for “Wonderland” for a vocal performance.

There IS an alternate version of this song where they combine traditional Japanese instruments and even appear in traditional Maiko dress. (Secret Maiko Lips). You really should check out their songs Freedom, Daydreaming, and Cross for a full scope on Saiki and Miku's vocal prowess.
Also it was actually Miku (rhythm guitar/second vocal with the pig tails) who worked in the cafe and put it all together.
Glad you finally got around to them, this pidgeon hole runs very deep, but it's worth the ride. Band-Maid are without a doubt, 5 of the most incredible musicians on the planet, I highly encourage you to dig deeper into their repertoire. They are quite eclectic in the scope of what they can do.

Band-Maid is absolutely fantastic and Saiki is a great singer. It's a shame you're hearing a studio recording. She sounds way better than this live nowadays. She had surgery on her vocal folds a few years ago and I'm pretty sure this was recorded before that. Since then she's had a lot of training and have changed her technique completely. She sounds kind of the same, but has got a fuller and warmer tone now.

Cool you are reacting to Band-Maid, they are such a fantastic band. Sad that you are looking an video that´s not live. Especially for a singer and vocalist i recommend "Wonderland live" from their channel. Don´t worry about copystrike, they LOVE to watch reaction and covervideos! What makes this band so freaking awesome for me is the fact that they are ALL on a very high level, no weak link, no star, everbody got to shine! BAND MAID is celebrating its 8th year of formation. BAND was formed by a girl who came to Tokyo from a rural area of Japan to become a singer when she was about 20 years old. Five unique and talented girls gathered. The members have not changed, and they are continuing their efforts to improve their playing ability. They are constantly writing new songs and cool songs. Three new songs will be released at the end of October.
BAND MAID is a hard rock band, but it's a very diverse band. Listen to different types of songs.
1 Thrill : The first music video that saved them from dissolution. Classic rock 2014
2 Bubble : A tribute to the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, funky rock
    3 Different
: First anime opening song, new sense of high-speed rock. Anime is Log Horizon 3rd season.
4 Daydreaming : Beautiful power ballad. Kobato's backing vocals and Kanami's guitar solo are wonderful.
5 Dice : Rhythmic hard rock singing women's independence
6 about us : A gift for fans who cannot meet in a pandemic. Beautiful ballad.
7 Freedom : A power rock that walks around the stage and conveys a smile.
The transition from drum solo to lead guitar is the best.
8 Manners : Declaration to create new hard rock while inheriting classic rock. Cool hard rock. Rock'n'Roll never die.
9 alone : The song they wrote, composed and released for the first time. Medium speed Hard Rock 2016
10 Secret My Lips and Secret Maiko Lips : Funky Hard Rock. A gift for fans of April Fool's Day .
11 Blooming : Vocals and chorus are impressive, and various types of music are fused.
Added ★ Peace & Love : Founder Miku Kobato's solo project. Pigeon saves the world. Funky pop rock.

Thank you! Always a nice surprise to see reactions to Band-Maid from a vocalist’s perspective because their super-power is more of an unbeatable band synergy thing rather than standout vocals (although they are great there too).
Edit: This is one of those bands where every member is equally loved. In fact while not updated, the last time non-Japanese fans were polled the lead Singer Saiki actually came in 5th in “favourite member” with about 18% of the votes.

Soooo glad you went this path since i've tried to show you the group since you watched BabyMetal.
Saiki Atsumi is in fact their second "frontwoman".
You see: When Miku Kobato had met Kanami Tono (lead guitar) on internet, who brought with Akane Hirose (drums), who knew MISA (bass) from music school. When they starting rehearsing one thing was obvious for her: the voice wasn't powerful enough for the genre.
She wanted a class-rock band, and her voice which once were good enough for pop (she was a member of a 3 piece pop group before working at the maid-cafè). From her label she knew about Saiki, and worked hard to bring her along. Though she had to lie to her about one specific thing: the image, so she got a little surprise attending first concert and handed out the first out-fit. Since then both hers and MISAs has deviated from the theme slightly.
Miku also became a very efficient rythm-guitarist!
Hope you go for their live stuff next time! They are truly a fantastic live-band!
If you miss some videos there is this chinese site named bilibili, who has a great deal of the videos you don't find on youtube.

Yeah for a real Live experience I'd try one of their songs that actually state Live in the title of the video on their channel. If you notice this actually states Music Video in the title as it's a studio dub, which is unusual from the band as their live recordings tend to be very good and even raw cell phone videos on channels like Vladimir Chupin tend to sound amazing.
Some good ones to note are Domination, Freedom, but I feel a good feel of the Singer's range would be Wonderland. Just to also note this band is very diverse in the rock genre, they seem to have fun playing what they want to play. Also a recent upload is Manner / Black Hole two songs bundled in one video it kind of shows some of the diverse nature of the band.

Welcome aboard, Beth. You are embarking on (along with many others - 120 million YT views!) an awesome hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (over 100 songs with their latest album, “Unseen World”), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom. Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off the rails spectacular.
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: ruclips.net/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/видео.html Their later songs from albums Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Warning, No God, H-G-K, Black Hole, Different, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Glory, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on. But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts! And many are represented with nearly 40 well produced music videos. ruclips.net/user/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYU-JI concerts. Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA on February 14th (“Domination” ruclips.net/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/видео.html), ZEPP 2018, Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 (bandmaidprime.tokyo) and some of the better 2019 tour Fan vids are excellent. Here’s four of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at super intimate venues. These two taken by Vladimir Chupin in Hamburg: ruclips.net/video/__1th7ctgMo/видео.html, and a fun, wonderful live performance in Amsterdam of Miku introducing "Don't You Tell Me" (with MISA & Kanami's great instrumental exchange) and "Turn Me On” (with MISA's solo intro): ruclips.net/video/kfYQoWBlSpk/видео.html. The next one was taken by JT Dayo in LA: ruclips.net/video/4uIYBkAybCI/видео.html, and finally by JOSER8845 in LA: ruclips.net/video/usWZvlGGDSs/видео.html. If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
    Band-Maid members are:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 27 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 29 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 30 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 30 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 28 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note.. uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.

“Thrilled” 😉 to see you reacting to my favorite band. So many great songs in a variety of styles. It might be more rewarding to analyze the vocals in a live performance, in particular the jazzy ballad “Wonderland,” and the unplugged version of Puzzle, a duet in which Saiki is backed by ethereal harmonies from lead guitarist Kanami, whom we usually don’t get to hear. The amazing harmonies of Saiki and Miku are on full display in the recent live stream recording of Manners.

Wonderful reaction. Please consider reacting to one of their live songs as they shine so much brighter live. Both "Wonderland" and "Domination" showcase different aspects of Saiki's voice. I would lean more to "Domination" because of non-Saiki factors which I don't want to spoil. Thanks

Thumbs up! The video is not live but it looks like it because the band is so good. Of course you will get many suggestions here. But you're mainly looking at the singer Saiki, so the best choice is surely the live version of "Wonderland". At least from the songs that are here on their official channel.

Yay, BAND-MAID! They are easily one of my favourite bands right now, and that happened really quickly after I discovered them through RUclips's recommends (RUclips does do something good every once in a while) in late Dec. 2019. As others have said, you really need to check out a more recent live recording, though. They are so incredible live. And I've got the Blu-Ray collection to prove it! Miku, the mastermind behind the band and the rhythm guitarist/back up singer, also has a really nice voice, but very different from Saiki's.

It's interesting that you noted Saiki maintaining crisp consonants while singing with open vowels. To a certain degree that's a function of the way the language is structured. In Japanese, there are no 'letters'... only syllables. And each syllable is either a V or a CV. In other words, it has no ending consonant sounds. This makes it very natural to keep a crisp attack at the beginning of any word or phrase. It's also why it often sounds especially rhythmical.

    • @iDEATH
      @iDEATH 2 года назад

That was nicely insightful. I've often said that Japanese is one of my favourite languages to hear sung, and it seemed obvious that it had to be something about the structure of it, it's cadence in a non-musical theory way, but I don't know enough about languages in general or Japanese specifically to say precisely why. Thanks for shedding some light on that.

    • @t-shinji
      @t-shinji 2 года назад +2

      > And each syllable is either a V or a CV
That’s not the case of the best Japanese lyricists who can drop vowels, including Miku Kobato. Compare Band-Maid songs with other J-pop songs, and you’ll notice Band-Maid vocals are more crisp and rhythmical.

You have a lot of awesome music to look forward to - you can literally just pick something at random off of their channel and it'll be great. Stylistically they're ALL OVER THE PLACE - often in the same song. They specialize in complex songs that tend to impress other musicians with catchy pop hooks that you'll love even if you hate catchy pop hooks. They can go very, very hard or do a beautiful ballad or anything in between so you'll need to check out a few to know them. Then, complete addiction follows because their music stimulates the dopamine glands like crazy. Only down side is that your face might start to hurt from smiling so hard.

Actually, "Secret My Lips" is not a bad place to start with Band Maid.... It "Kinda" represents their sound and style... but it doesn't...(AC/DC)... They play the whole Rock "Sphere" and so often go beyond the boundries.

    Welcome to the pigeon-hole called BAND-MAID! :)
Saiki is (at least for me) one of the best vocalists you can find in the rock genre at the moment. Her voice fits so perfectly with the music being played around her. And this changes stylistically sometimes very drastically or even several times during one song, as you got to hear here for example in the breakdown. She is rightly called the fifth indispensable instrument of this band by many of us.
I think you might like their songs 'Wonderland', 'Daydreaming' or their unofficial anthem 'Freedom' if you want to hear more from Saiki and the ladies. :)
    Greetings from a German Maidiac!

Another interesting thing about B-M is that the members have always mentioned how their songs are very, very difficult to sing at karaoke… which kind of hurts their ease of becoming more popular, but they have continued doing what they want to do anyway, putting radio and karaoke friendliness aside. I love that about them.

In addition to recommending that you check out literally everything else by Band-Maid (lol!), there is a trifecta of top-tier Japanese all-female hard rock and metal bands, consisting of Band-Maid, Lovebites, and Nemophila. Both of those other two are very worth checking out, though I think you might find Lovebites most intriguing vocally - picture R&B vocals fronting a power metal band influenced by Helloween! Nemophila's vocalist is also very interesting, combining gorgeous cleans with banshee wails! But I strongly recommend you check out "Edge of the World" by Lovebites, for Asami's vocal performance: ruclips.net/video/FGRxXCDtRFA/видео.html

Japanese is a very percussive sounding language, that's why it sounds rhythmic and almost like rapping when you sing fast.
Many reactors previously mentioned Paramore when talking about the band but it might be also because of Saiki's vocal.
Her vocal cuts through the busy/loud instrumental sound of the band without having big, powerful voice. So it must be the clarity in her voice as you said. Plus her voice is powerful enough, sounds even more powerful live! If you listen to more band-maid songs you'll start to notice that she can hold her breath unbelievably long. Not enough people give credit to Saiki as an amazing singer she is.
Miku, the other singer has a softer, lighter vocal with wider range. Her voice blends and harmonizes so beautifully with Saiki.
Saiki said something to the effect of "Miku has something I don't and I have what she doesn't" in one of the interviews.

Having grown up in the Golden Age of Rock/Metal (the 80's), I have to say Band-Maid is the best rock band of the last 30yrs. They are stacked with talent: The drummer, bassist and lead guitarist could easily hold their own against the legends. Sakai's voice is epic and so unique. More importantly, they are carrying the torch of Rock forward, at a time when it's been dying. The main reason why< I think< the blending of languages works so well (even though it's 70% Japenese), is that they use a lot of percussionistic lyrical phrasing, so you can still enjoy the rhythm and flow of the words even if you can't understand them. They are actually better live- they have many better songs than this, so please check them out and do more BM.

I think you might have your songs mixed up. When you mentioned that you 'thought this would combine a little bit more of Japanese music within it', it sounds almost like you should of been reviewing the song 'Secret Maiko Lips', sung by 'Band Maiko' - not Secret My Lips by Band Maid.
'Band Maiko' was an 2018 April Fools joke by Band-Maid where they intimated they were changing their band's name and going more Japanese traditional in style. They did the song 'Secret Maiko Lips'. Official video ruclips.net/video/NNHGABwme50/видео.html
In April 2019, they came back again as Band Maiko with a mini album of 7 songs.

Band Maid are great, and best enjoyed live as others have said on here. A couple more recommendations from Japan, Lovebites - Edge of the world or Epilogue Live, because they are far better live, they sing in English and these song demonstrate Asami's range. Marys Blood RIP, or infinite love live. Two very different songs, they sing in Japanese, difficult because they don't have so many live songs on you-tube showcasing Eye's voice . Also would be interested to see what you make of Unlucky Morpheus - Subbed Black Pentagram live so you can follow the song. Don't know what you would make of Shiren, but Fuki has a very interesting voice. Edit, just realized Mobieus Loop from Mary's blood is also on youtube as live at the Blaze.
