    I didn't just accept myopia when I got diagnosed at age 13 like you. I wanted an explanation but still haven't really gotten one. Mostly just my suspicions checked by some common sense but I don't have a medical background so I'll probably never really get satisfied answers. I was convinced I spending too much time inside reading books which caused me to get near sighted. I get that not everyone that spends time inside doing up close work gets near sighted and I wish I had been one of those people but it just doesn't make sense that my perfectly functioning eyes would effectively stop working at such a young age when they were otherwise perfectly healthy. You might think that when I started getting near sighted and suspecting that this was all related to my behavior that I would adjust my behavior to protect myself but I didn't. I really really liked getting lost in another world reading fantasy books and even my optometrist was telling me it was my genes and there was nothing I could do to fix it. Changing a behavior you really enjoy takes a lot of motivation and mixed signals didn't cut it. But I'm convinced that if I at least spent more time outside instead of reading or playing video games it would have saved or at least mitigated the myopia. I've read some stuff online that adults can actually reverse the effects and shorten the eye but I don't think I have it in me to alter my behavior that much. I think wearing plus lenses when reading up close for long periods of time might help a little but I think the big thing is spending lots of time outside in the daylight. But just speculation. If I have kids I'll insist they spend lots of time outside for sure.

    I have had progressive myopia since I was little, receiving my first pair of very thick glasses at the age of 3. I am now 66 and legally blind. I have had surgeries to repair holes and tears in the retina of both eyes when I 23, 2 macula hole repairs in the right eye (1998 & 2006) and 1 in the left eye (2001). I believe I was born myopic as I could not see distant things my dad pointed out to me; I think he thought I was a bit daft. As soon as I started school I was referred for spectacles and have worn them ever since, my prescription finally stabilising at -13. Without spectacles my far point is 60 mm and my near point 48; everything outside this is blurred.
    In my 60s I had both retinas detach, one with a hole and tear the other tore into strips. 3 ops totalling nearly 10 hours in theatre but my sight was saved.
    I was recommended to take beta carotene, lutein and zeoxanthin, so I do every day and I am eternally grateful to my surgeon.

    I was really worried about my eye sight at the age of 56, had progressing myopia and started to experience signs of glaucoma. Then I started to take NAC and later also astragalus which resulted not only in slightly more energy but also extremely slow improvement in my eye sight, especially with my night vision but my myopia improved as well. Several years ago I started to take C60 which appeared to accelerate my improvements, such as color vision at night and finally I was discarding my pair of glasses, although my vision is not perfect. Two weeks ago I finally decided to start experimenting with near infra red light. It appeared to improve my residual myopia even further.
    It was a relief that they stopped bugging me with ever more expensive glasses and I am no more dependent on a very well organized branch of health industry. I also decided to do everything in my power not to depend on prescription drugs, this includes antibiotics.

      @@DoctorEyeHealth Astragalus is an ancient herbal remedy used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, C60 is a brand new substance created by scientist when studying the light spectra in the atmosphere of red giant stars. The UN (or maybe the EU) wanted to learn about the toxicity of the substance, so a university in Paris conducted a famous rat experiment which did not show any toxicity but appeared to extend the life of the laboratory rats and they did not get diseases of the old age. Many people started to self-experiment with the substance, myself included. There were blogs documenting the experience of people. Unfortunately these blogs disappeared from the internet and also the original documentation of the rat experiment was also removed. No reason given.
      I was lucky enough to discover it while some information was still available, which made me think that stem cell production was increased. That could explain the success in improving degenerative conditions. Most frequently mentioned conditions were the vision, skin health, arthritis, and so on.

    A few years ago I realized I couldn't see far away well or drive anymore without problems, and I got my first glasses for myopia at 22. The thing though is that this happened essentially overnight. When I was 21 I was perfect, could see EVERYTHING. All of a sudden BAM, I couldn't ready any signs driving anymore. My dad makes fun of me because I'm only at a mere -0.75 but he doesn't seem to be concerned that this suddenly happened in the first place at all, regardless of how bad my vision actually is. Over time it will probably get worse and I don't want any of the things in this video happening to me. People have to take this more seriously, especially when it suddenly happens to young/younger people like me. For a period of time from the age 21-23 I didn't have a job and I always stayed home on the computer so I think this really contributed to the myopia suddenly, and with people being indoors on screens more I think this is a way bigger issue than people think.

    I have myopic macular degeneration. This was the best explanation I have ever gotten on. What’s going on. I am legally blind at this point. My vision is getting progressively worse. I wish I would’ve had access to some of these things earlier. Many years ago, I checked into getting laser surgery, but at that point, my eyes were, too stretched out for anyone to try it. I still feel that I’ve been able to get that. I would not be in the position. I’m in now. It made me realize just how blessed I was when I had vision that was correctable with contacts or glasses.
    My big concern now is my children and grandchildren and trying to prevent them from going down the same road I have traveled. I have four siblings and only one other has the same issues I do. My brothers eyes have never been real bad thankfully. And my sister had laser surgery many years ago.
    Thankfully, my nature is such that I just plow on. I am thrilled that I am still independent and can do most things. I have a loving supportive family. But, at times, it can be so frustrating. Thank you for shutting light on so many issues. I really enjoy your videos and I’m looking forward to the two upcoming ones

    This has nothing to do with myopia but I was working up a patient for my ophthalmologist today and he had severe glaucoma and had NLP (No light perception) in both eyes. I was just sitting there just asking about the patients drops he uses.. because that's all I could do. When your eye is at that point, death of the optic nerve, theres nothing that is going to fix it.
    I just felt so bad while talking to him. I've had CF (counting fingers) HM (Hand Motion) and LP (Light Perception) before, they haven’t completely lost vision, it's close but they still have some sort of vision in one eye most of the time. But man, I'm not a fan of glaucoma or doctors who specialize in it.

    A few years ago I noticed a weird, bright star-shape in my vision. Fortunately I was told to get this checked out immediately. The vitreous was pulling my retina right in the back of my eye. They waited on surgery. Then the other eye started doing this too. I had to have surgery to fix it. I had one eye did in May of that year and the other in September. I had to stay face down and use lots of different eye drops for 2 weeks after each surgery. It was miserable, but better than going blind. I still have little blind spots and twisted spots in my vision that I think will never heal. Also, that surgery speeds up the formation of cataracts. So I've also had cataract surgery.
    I was always more into reading than in playing outside. I wish I'd known better as a kid and had exercised my distance vision more. I wasn't worried when I needed glasses at seven. But it would have been better if I'd kept my eye shape and avoided the danger altogether.

      hmm, interesting. My vision got worse all of a sudden. I thought I had diabetes or some thing but felt great. Anyways I went to optician and got a new prescription and glasses(I'm myopic). The new glasses worked amazingly. U had literally never seen better. However over course of a few months my distance vision got worse and worse as my near vision accommodation got better and better. Went to the otician and told them whats up. They recommended a new distance prescription lol. I said no. Anyways I recalled around the time my vision changed I had started reading in bed a few hours a day before sleeping with my glasses on which strained muscles in eye for near vision accommodation. Thinking this might be the cause I stop reading with my glasses which I didn't need for reading anyway, within a few weeks my eyes had relaxed back to good far vision with normal prescription with my near accommodation ability decreasing. Not sure if it was maybe a quasi myopia or my eye's lenses slowing being squished into a new state due to the focusing muscles constant squeezing them to be better at near focusing,but going without using my stronger glasses definitely fixed the problem.. In fact can notice the changes over a few hours which will make my distance/near prescription go out of wack now...

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  Месяц назад

      Usually, myopia stabilizes in the early 20s. Then gradually diminishes as people get closer to middle age and beyond. This occurs due to changes in crystalline lens flexure and refractive properties as the lens hardens and eventually turns into a cataract. Some people can have a myopic shift too as cataracts ripen, but this usually happens more suddenly over a few months. - After cataract surgery, changes to glasses prescriptions is pretty rare unless there are changes to the retina or cornea (such as swelling).

Usually young kids who spend more time indoors and do more up-close work have a higher risk of myopia. There seems to be some signaling to collagen production that promotes eye growth. Also it wasn't until the past year that my near sight has gotten to a level where I've need to use reading glasses.
      I can still read my phone screen now though. But my near sightedness seems to fluctuate. Got months I couldn't read the battery percentage on my phone and tonight I can read it perfectly fine.

      Hey thanks for asking! This is a really good question with a tough answer.
      For both professions, reviews are always there (however sometimes reviews of doctors and clinics have the same issues that restaurants have with reviews (some are fake))
      When I look for an optometrist, if I do not know them personally, I do look if they have completed a residency - this at least tells me they have received advanced training in disease or in their subspecialty - they usually have seen more advanced cases.
      I also look for other credentials, such as being a fellow of the American academy of optometry (FAAO) or that maybe they are board certified by the American Board of Optometry (Dipl ABO), There are other certifications and accolades out there too.
      These extra letters won't guarantee your experience but at least gives me more confidence that they are experienced and driven to learn and be better doctors.
      Ophthalmologists - I would again look if they have completed a fellowship and received any accolades. Perhaps published beyond what they did in residency. Then of course, asked around and looked at reviews.
      Wish you the best, RK and keratoconus is not a good mix.

    I’m wondering, at what prescription strength do you as a doctor start becoming concerned for your myopic patient?

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  Месяц назад

      Well, in the past we had been more concerned as someone approaches -6. because that was a previously determined "severe myopia" cutoff used in some research publications. But now that we are learning more about myopia. Some doctors are worried about any amount of nearsightedness. Especially if over -0.50 to -0.75 (again, a cuttoff frequently used in research).
      The risk of the eye diseases mentioned increases dramatically with increased myopia power.

    • @Cliche8701
      @Cliche8701 24 дня назад

      Research now shows that "there is no safe level of nearsightedness". Increasing from -1 to -2 brings the same percentage increase in risk of several eye diseases as growing from -6 to -7. For example, every increase of -1.00 increases the risk of myopic macular degeneration by 58 %.
      Professor Mark Bullimore has several studies covering this subject.
      Thus, though I am more concerned for a -8.00 than a -1.00 patient, I am concerned nonetheless when a patient with low nearsightedness walks in, and the earlier I can start myopia management, the better.
      Sincerely, an optometrist.

    Hi! I rarely comment but I watch your vids. I'm near sighted but I started w/ astigmatism when I was eleven years old. I'm 63 now (my how time flies). My question is this: how is the progression of myopia related to eyeglass grade? In my case I've been mostly astigmatic and my eyeglass grade has been slow in getting higher over the years. It's hovered over 100 for most of my life. It only became 200+ in my late 40s I think. Early on I was told by the optometrist that I couldn't use contacts coz my grade was too low. I don't know if that's still true but I've gotten used to eyeglasses over the years. I've come to prefer them. I've always (as far as I can recall) had floaters but never to a bothersome degree. I can usually ignore or forget they're there (I don't see them unless I focus on seeing them). Then around age 55, I had a stroke (w/c I obviously recovered from) a couple of years later I started to get peculiar headaches w/c reminded me of my eyeglass grade so I had my eyesight/glasses checked. My grade reversed a few degrees such that my eyeglass lenses no longer agreed with my sight. My eyesight apparently improved. So I had new eyeglass lenses made. My grade hasn't changed so far. Historically, my eyesight "degrades" slowly. My eyeglass lenses have always been thin and light while those around me who were younger than me had thick and heavy eyeglasses.
    Lastly, I didn't know myopia is now a pandemic of worldwide proportions🤞

      @DoctorEyeHealth  Месяц назад

      Hey! Really appreciate you leaving a comment (and watching).
      In our youth, as myopia progresses and the axial length of the eye grows longer, the power of the glasses becomes more negative. This process slows down in our late teens to early 20s (although some people do still progress beyond their 20s). As we get into our 40s and beyond, presbyopia sets in and we become reliant on bifocals/reading glasses/progressives to see up close (Due to hardening of the crystalline lens inside the eye). Then as we continue to age, the refractive power of the crystalline lens changes and the power of the glasses may become less. People usually become slightly more farsighted or need a strong Plus to their powers.
      Then, if cataracts progress to more advanced state, the eyes can undergo a large Myopic shift, where in the matter of just a few months the person can jump several of diopters more nearsighted, but this change is due to the crystalline lens power and not the axial length of the eye.
      Hope that helps. Thanks again.

    Hm is the opposite true for hyperopes when they need stronger and stronger plus power that their eyeballs shorten? Or do they also get longer (wouldn't make sense though since plus power doesn't move the focus point further back like minus does)?
    Yeah the future doesn't look bright.

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  Месяц назад +1

      Usually, for hyperopes, they can be born with smaller eyes but the changing power of their glasses occurs due to changes to their accommodative posture (the flex of their eye muscles) and then the refractive power of the crystalline lens with age.
      Most hyperopes are walking around flexing their eye muscles like crazy.

      @DoctorEyeHealth  Месяц назад

      Hey! Thanks for asking. Usually, myopia progression slows down in the early to mid 20s. Some people do still progress but not as common. -11 is pretty high of a power to get LASIK specifically, it can and has been done but there are alternative procedures which could be recommended, such as PRK or ICL (I am looking into ICL myself).

    • @Cliche8701
      @Cliche8701 24 дня назад

      With that high prescription your risk of various eye diseases is increased exponentially, unfortunately. I would recommend annual eye exams to keep check of your retinas.
      Regarding LASIK, that's a very high prescription, much tougher than say a -2.00. "The shorter putt is easier to sink".
      It is likely that they won't be able to correct you to 0.00, leaving you with residual nearsightedness and very flat corneas, which might become harder to fit contact lenses on.
      I'd look into an ICL procedure instead.

      A person with myopia may choose to remove their glasses and see up close. However, this may or may not reduce the risk of myopia progressing. In fact, there are some studies on young children that show kids who don't wear glasses at all for their myopia actually progress in myopia faster.

      Hey, thankfully, lacquer cracks and bleeding in the eye is rare, But is a sad thing I have had to manage in a few of my patients with high myopia.
      Sorry to scare, I just want to express the gravity of what is going on.
      Has your prescriptions stabilized over the years?

      Hey, these videos has to be so dramatic and scary in order to collect views, don't get so stressed out because someone said that you'll get this and that disease. And Doc should also have some sense to not scare people as these conditions like bleeding in eye and glucose are rare.

    Thanks for the informative video. Offtopic: can you train your eyemuscles? I have a lazy eye and i feel like its getting worse and worse. I keep losing focus on that eye. I have to concentrate and "flex" to not have that problem. Mostly happens when im looking at the phone. Does taping the "good" eye work for grownups? Im 34 years old.

      So there is training for eye muscles - we call it Vision Therapy or Vision rehabilitation. It is something you will want to consult with a local professional and specialist about, because if you do the wrong exercises it could make things worse.

      Thanks for asking! Our eyes tend to develop fast during childhood and adolescence, but slows down in our late teens and early 20's. Some people do still develop worsening myopia in their 20s but I am not fully aware why this happens. Could be genetic risk.

      Not yet, we are working on it. I am setting up meetings with several companies to ask them about their products directly as some of their websites are not straightforward.

    I have both short sightedness, also called Myopia and Colour Blindness. My Mother has Stickler, resulting in both my Sister and I also having Stickler. One of the symptoms of Stickler is short sightedness. So, is Shortsightedness genetic? Yes, yes it is. Further to that, while neither of my Mother or Sister are colourblind, my Mother carries the recessive gene. And my Father, and my Grandmother before him, was colourblind. My Sister got the recessive gene from my Mother, and I got the active gene from my Father. Hence why I am colourblind. There is no Myopia Pandemic, myopia has always existed. Most people on Earth may have the gene either from one or both parents that results in myopia. Genes are strange things. Trying to make out that suddenly there is a Pandemic called Myopia is ridiculous in the extreme. Both my Mother and my Father had Glaucoma. My Father died completely blind as a result. My Mother had eye stents that have reduced the pressure. But it is reasonable to assume that at some point I may develop Glaucoma as well. The trick is regular eye tests, so it is picked up quickly and treated. Never take your vision for granted, even if you do not have myopia, even if you are not long sighted, even if you are not colourblind. Get regular eye tests, so that any issues can be dealt with promptly.

    Hi doctor its me again i would like to know if I can improve my visual acuity with my condition of congintinal nystagmus and keratctnous with -10 and -11 with 5 to 4 astigmatism and i am planning to travel to south korea for my treatment I get to know about co-wave procedure any thoughts on this also Evo icl or toric icl doesn't cure astigmatism to 5 astigmatism it's a different lenses artifix or something
    I was able to see 20/40 and 20/60 can I improve to 20/20 in both eyes thankyou doctor

      Hey! Thanks for sharing! Yes, I do know about Co-wave (corneal wavefront), and ECO icl/Toric ICL (I'm actually looking into getting ICL myself).
      A high prescription may be improved with refractive surgeries, and even keratoconus has been treated with refractive surgeries such as PRK (However, usually treated with corneal crosslinking alongside it). The concern in a case with nystagmus is that depending on the type and cause of the nystagmus, the movements of the eyes may limit the visual acuity. What have your doctors/surgeons recommended?

    • @caylusRyan
      @caylusRyan Месяц назад

      I was recommended mostly icl and i was told I was a candidate for lasek and cxl and trek+cxl and buy I was concerned by most of the doctors saying it might go worse with the side effects like dry eyes cause I already have dry eyes but not all the time only few days a month I feel gritty dry irritating sensation in the eyes i don't exactly know may be caused by keratctnous
      Do you think I can proceed with lasek or prk or trek surgery with cxl my cct is 450 so
      I am looking for you opinion also forgot to mention it's vertical nystagmus congintinal one thankyou for your quick response doctor
