You're best friends with someone for 20 years, you talk to this person every day, and think that you know him better than anyone, and then come to find out that you never really knew him at all. It's a real slap in the face. But life goes on.

When I was in the U. S. Marine Corps in 1976, I came out to a guy who I was friends with, another Marine. He was, and is, straight, and said he could not reciprocate those wants and wishes, but that I was a really good friend. That's nearly 50 years ago, he's on his second marriage now, we live 1,000 miles apart, but talk to each other on a weekly basis. The risks you don't take are the ones you'll never know what might have come from. It is really nice how some young fellows like you are so open to sharing intimate details of your lives like this. You just cannot really know how much easier it is for you today than it was for us 50 years ago. Best wishes to you, and your long distance friendship.

I just wish that the Gay world of today, particularly amongst young people, had more respect for my generation; because, in truth, if it weren't for the suffering and pain gay men - I'm not dissing Lesbian Women here as that was never illegal in the UK - of my generation, older and dead endured, they wouldn't be able to enjoy today's freedoms. As I said to my GP recently in a consultation, 'If I'd had you as my Doctor when I was a teenager, my life would've been a lot easier.'

Good for you. I'm an 85 year old gay guy who supports your mature views on relationships. When I was your age there was no way to do what you've done without suffering severe consequences from family, friends and school mates. In fact, when I was your age what I am and what I felt was ILLEGAL with fines and even jail time if caught and convicted. My partner & I are celebrating our 48th year together this year. All that said, there are potholes in the roadway of life. Try as you might to avoid them, it's almost a certainty you'll land in one or more. They hurt. But you'll survive. Good luck!

I had a good life and if I passed away now I would hold no regrets, my place in time is special to me, and there are many kids who still face prosecution. The difference is they have less freedom unlike you and I which we can make decisions for ourselves now. It's not all bad and I love all the anime, music, and moments I had in life back then when I was a teenager. Some parts of the taboo also make it more exciting as it's forbidden love. There is something poetic about that

32 yo here. All I can say is that, I am very jealous that you are even able to tell your best friend that you had a crush on him. I wished I could've told my then close high school friend that I had a crush on him as well but way back then I had self-hatred of being gay (14~ years ago is a different world). Even now it's hard for me to accept that I am who I am. Never had sex, never had love and have been comfortably being alone without anyone for a long time. I've heard people say that an online friendship or relationship isn't a "real" relationship because you're not in the physical presence of that person, and what they may say online may not be a lie or disingenuous. Well, at the risk of stating the obvious, people lie "in person," "IRL" as well. Anyone can be deceptive under any circumstance. Some of the best friendships I've ever had have been online ones. And yeah, I agree with what Leon said about "falling in love with their mind" and not being distracted by their physicality. It is, in a way, a purer kind of friendship or relationship because all that's left are your and their thoughts and feelings. Looks are, to some extent, novel, and novelties lose their appeal quickly. It's when you have good chemistry with a person's character and personality, and their thoughts and feelings when you have something that lasts. Looks fade. But a person's heart and soul lasts a lifetime.

I won't say I'm not a lil jealous of him but I'm happy you have a chance at something real! I had a long distance relationship with a guy in the Philippines over a couple years time - smart, funny, attractive with an absolutely adorable smile (though a little heavier than I usually go for,) and schooling to become a nurse. Things ended because he couldn't deal with the long distance and ended up dating someone from Australia who was able to afford to fly there and be with him occasionally. It was heartbreaking though I understood. Flights from the US to the Philippines isn't exactly value priced lol I pray you have a good relationship that lasts a lifetime. You deserve it.

Leon, love is a wonderful thing. It comes in a vast number of forms, all of which are valid. You do not control who you fall in love with, it is not just a mental or a physical thing...emotions are the language of the heart as much as the head, probably more. One of my closest friends who is straight asked me if I knew what makes me gay. I told him it isn't just the physical attraction at all, although it is definitely a part of it, it is more about who I fall in love with emotionally, I frankly fall in romantic love with a guy, and just don't with girls, that simple...I said that I can appreciate the beauty of a woman...no doubt on that...but I emotionally just do not connect with them in a romantic way at all. They always fall into the friend zone, I tried to force myself to become straight at first, I can go through the physical motions of sex with them, but it always just felt empty in some way, and usually neither of us truly enjoyed it, hah. But with guys for me it was way better (so much better, and on so many levels), and so different. With my first crush, by just them looking at me with no physical touch what so ever...I had all kinds of physical reactions ( and not just an erection)...I would start sweating, my heart would pound, the so called butterflies in the stomach, except for me it felt like nervous knots, I wouldn't know how to act...I would be a mess, and simply because I knew I liked them, and was attracted to them. My first long term relationship with a guy started out as a crush, same as you...but it took me a long time to tell them. After I finally did, he blew my mind by saying "What took you so long?, I was hoping you would say it first so I wouldn't have too", all I could say was, "well, why didn't you say it then?". He thought for a minute, and said "same reason you didn't...fear of rejection, and humiliation, and losing what I had with you up to that point". All my "first times: wound up with him, and we were together for several years till he moved away for college, and it just kinda fizzled out over time for both us (I think he found someone "better: in his mind, but he never said so)... We do not wear a sign on us telling everyone our sexual orientations, or who we like...and we both know what happens if we "assume" anything about anyone. Love can be stressful due to what society, and SOME people say to make others feel bad about same sex attraction whether it is BI, PAN, or GAY. Society is getting better out in the world, but it is a bit trickier on the internet, NEVER take the negativity that the internet gives too seriously...it is mostly cowards who due to the ability to remain anonymous for the most part as a way to get away with being hateful for "fun" when what they really mean is that they do not understand it, they are afraid of it, and even some do not like that down deep they feel that way too, regrettable some religious institutions preach against it, which to me goes against what religion supposed to tell us..:that "God loves us", any way I am already typing a book so I will shut up soon. It is getting better slowly online too, the vast majority of people agree with what Tim Waltz said..."Mind your damn business"...so true. Anyway Leon, you are a wonderful young man. You, like me wear your heart on your sleeve, so it is easy to get your heart broken. However, you are smart, articulate, confident. You will be OK, whatever life throws at you. But life, and love go to the bold, and the brave...so be your authentic self, allow yourself to love whomever you love, and be bold, and brave to let them know...that's the only way to find someone who feels the same way about you, and happiness. 32 yo here. All I can say is that, I am very jealous that you are even able to tell your best friend that you had a crush on him. I wished I could've told my then close high school friend that I had a crush on him as well but way back then I had self-hatred of being gay (14~ years ago is a different world). Even now it's hard for me to accept that I am who I am. Never had sex, never had love and have been comfortably being alone without anyone for a long time. Good to see you at least could experience and document it.

I've heard people say that an online friendship or relationship isn't a "real" relationship because you're not in the physical presence of that person, and what they may say online may not be a lie or disingenuous. Well, at the risk of stating the obvious, people lie "in person," "IRL" as well. Anyone can be deceptive under any circumstance. Some of the best friendships I've ever had have been online ones. And yeah, I agree with what Leon said about "falling in love with their mind" and not being distracted by their physicality. It is, in a way, a purer kind of friendship or relationship because all that's left are your and their thoughts and feelings. Looks are, to some extent, novel, and novelties lose their appeal quickly. It's when you have good chemistry with a person's character and personality, and their thoughts and feelings when you have something that lasts. Looks fade. But a person's heart and soul lasts a lifetime.

I won't say I'm not a lil jealous of him but I'm happy you have a chance at something real! I had a long distance relationship with a guy in the Philippines over a couple years time - smart, funny, attractive with an absolutely adorable smile (though a little heavier than I usually go for,) and schooling to become a nurse.
Things ended because he couldn't deal with the long distance and ended up dating someone from Australia who was able to afford to fly there and be with him occasionally. It was heartbreaking though I understood. Flights from the US to the Philippines isn't exactly value priced lol

Leon, love is a wonderful thing. It comes in a vast number of forms, all of which are valid. You do not control who you fall in love with, it is not just a mental or a physical thing...emotions are the language of the heart as much as the head, probably more. One of my closest friends who is straight asked me if I knew what makes me gay. I told him it isn't just the physical attraction at all, although it is definitely a part of it, it is more about who I fall in love with emotionally, I frankly fall in romantic love with a guy, and just don't with girls, that simple...I said that I can appreciate the beauty of a woman...no doubt on that...but I emotionally just do not connect with them in a romantic way at all. They always fall into the friend zone, I tried to force myself to become straight at first, I can go through the physical motions of sex with them, but it always just felt empty in some way, and usually neither of us truly enjoyed it, hah. But with guys for me it was way better (so much better, and on so many levels), and so different. With my first crush, by just them looking at me with no physical touch what so ever...I had all kinds of physical reactions ( and not just an erection)...I would start sweating, my heart would pound, the so called butterflies in the stomach, except for me it felt like nervous knots, I wouldn't know how to act...I would be a mess, and simply because I knew I liked them, and was attracted to them. My first long term relationship with a guy started out as a crush, same as you...but it took me a long time to tell them. After I finally did, he blew my mind by saying "What took you so long?, I was hoping you would say it first so I wouldn't have too", all I could say was, "well, why didn't you say it then?". He thought for a minute, and said "same reason you didn't...fear of rejection, and humiliation, and losing what I had with you up to that point". All my "first times: wound up with him, and we were together for several years till he moved away for college, and it just kinda fizzled out over time for both us (I think he found someone "better: in his mind, but he never said so)... We do not wear a sign on us telling everyone our sexual orientations, or who we like...and we both know what happens if we "assume" anything about anyone. Love can be stressful due to what society, and SOME people say to make others feel bad about same sex attraction whether it is BI, PAN, or GAY. Society is getting better out in the world, but it is a bit trickier on the internet, NEVER take the negativity that the internet gives too seriously...it is mostly cowards who due to the ability to remain anonymous for the most part as a way to get away with being hateful for "fun" when what they really mean is that they do not understand it, they are afraid of it, and even some do not like that down deep they feel that way too, regrettable some religious institutions preach against it, which to me goes against what religion supposed to tell us..:that "God loves us", any way I am already typing a book so I will shut up soon. It is getting better slowly online too, the vast majority of people agree with what Tim Waltz said..."Mind your damn business"...so true. Anyway Leon, you are a wonderful young man. You, like me wear your heart on your sleeve, so it is easy to get your heart broken. However, you are smart, articulate, confident. You will be OK, whatever life throws at you. But life, and love go to the bold, and the brave...so be your authentic self, allow yourself to love whomever you love, and be bold, and brave to let them know...that's the only way to find someone who feels the same way about you, and happiness. I am so glad you are happy with your new boyfriend...I truly wish you love, health, and a lifetime of happiness. You, same as I, deserve what ever our heart desires. A fellow human...Brian.
