Aww this episode is gonna be sad for me. This was the episode that they were making when President Kennedy was shot and killed. At the end where they show the painted turtle, Mary Tyler Moore said in an interview that she was actually supposed to say, "Oh! We look just like the Kennedys." But then Kennedy was shot, they had to go and change that.
It's true, according to Mary Tyler Moore, that a line to the effect of "We look like the Kennedy family!" was changed in postproduction because of the JKF assassination, but a different episode, not this one, was being rehearsed that week. This a direct quote transcribed from page 213 of "The Official Dick Van Dyke Show Book," which I own: "Three days into rehearsals for the episode titled 'Happy Birthdays and Too Many More,' the world was shocked by the news that the thirty-fifth president had been shot in a Dallas motorcade. By the time the company regrouped to film the episode four days later, they were hardly surprised to discover that nobody was in much of a mood for laughing -- onstage or off." From page 216: "In the wake of the tragedy, the Van Dyke Show's producers were understnadably concerned that the events in Dallas might have a less-than-positive effect on their audience's moral at the films that was scheduled to take place the following Tuesday night. Over the weekend, Reiner and executive produer Sheldon Leonard considered canceling the week's episode altogether. But finally, invoking the oldest show business maxim of all, Reiner and his producing partner agreed the show would go on -- though, under the circumstances, it was decided that it would go on without the benefit of a live audience. As much as he bristled at the thought, Reiner reluctantly agreed to use canned laughter on the episode's soundtrack, the assumption being that even prerecorded laughs would be preferable to the shell-shocked response they were likely to elicit from any live audience that week." On page 334 it's mentioned that the caricature on the back of the turtle was the work of none other than Dick Van Dyke himself. Nothing is mentioned about the line being changed; however, if Mary Tyler Moore said a line was changed, I believe her. This episode was first broadcast on December 4, 1963, and the one filmed without a live audience days after the JFK assassination, "Happy Birthday and Too Many More," was first broadcast on February 5, 1964.
Mary Tyler Moore and Mariam Colon, born a few months apart in 1936, died about six weeks apart in 2017. I guess the writers had to make her Spanish rather than Puerto Rican to sustain the deportation threat. But would a native Spanish speaker find the accent a giveaway?
@@docjoe86An IMDB user reports this among this episode’s goofs: “Character error/Miriam Colón, a famous Puerto Rican actress, doesn't sound anything like a person from Barcelona.”
@@wmwestbroek If she was from Barcelona, her first language probably would have been Catalan, not Spanish, although at the time Franco was in power and he tried to ban the Catalan language. Either way, she shouldn’t have sounded Puerto Rican!
The producers and writers probably figured a US audience could not tell the difference. For that matter, Miriam Colon does not speak like a Cuban woman in SCARFACE.
How is it that a suburban housewife, who is on no committees, who does no volunteer work, who is not involved in church activities, and has only one one school aged child that doesn't require school transportation and is not involved in any extracurricular activities, can be so overworked as to require a maid?
if a stranger showed up at the door and told rob "this is MY house now and you are my slave" he would go "ummm, uh, duh, ooo, ah, ummm awe doy uh, um, uh, um...yes master. uh duh umm your wish is my command. ub uh duh doy ooo oh duh, i will go get the deed to the ummm, uhhh, ummm, uhhh house".
I've never seen this one before, what an emotional rollercoaster!!
I Agree!!
Wow its great to see a young Miriam Colon (Maria) before she became to mother of Tony Montana in Scarface!
So love and appreciate all these great shows!
Akey?
A key? You want a key already?
We say this at our house all the time!!!

Thanks to both of you for all the info!! 😊
Very funny episode. Miriam Colon was wonderful as Maria.
The Petries are kind people
Painted animals were a thing then, Phyllis Diller had a pet painted beetle.
What does María say between 19:47 and 19:52? I understood “Qué atractivo and then nothing until she said “ustedes.”
She said: "Me hace sentir como si fuera una de ustedes"
@@pedroper859 Thanks!
How does he know so much spanish without the book lol
Estudias Español en LA Escuela
He probably took Spanish in high school and remembered it ?
It is just a show but that could be an explanation.

Probablemente

@@docjoe86 I know a Galician born at the right time for language learning, a neat five months after Franco died.
That is interesting, thank you. Both pretty women, too.
Miriam played Pacino's Mom in Scarface.
Çool !I didn't know that!!
Miriam or María?
@@pedroper859 Miriam Colon.
Turtles die when they're painted.
kinda awkward episode but still made me laugh some bits
you are easy to please.
17:10 Looked up at the screen and for a second I thought Laura had wet herself. Just a shadow...
You always on the lookout for such things? Must be a lonely troll..
Funny they say she’s from Barcelona yet she speaks nothing like ppl from Barcelona or most Spaniards

It's called writing for a sitcom.
She so doesn’t look like she’s from Barcelona.
