I had a lady come into a interview. She wore a sweat shirt and matching pants. When I asked her about her choice of clothing, she said she had been widowed and she had been a stay at home mom. She couldn't afford to buy a new outfit for job interviews. She was clean, had an easy going attitude, and knew her stuff. I hired her right on the spot. Was a great employee. Stayed with me for 15 years.

Not a job interview, but still a fun story. This happened some years ago. The head of purchasing at the company I worked for at the time was a huge heavy metal fan. He had tattooes on his upper arms, but spared the lower arms so they wouldn't stick out when he was wearing a shirt, long hair that he would wear open, but could tie together to look more professional, and was usually wearing band branded t-shirts and ripped jeans. On a normal day that was perfectly fine as he would not have contact to customers and if anything he might have to go through the production area where most people would be wearing protective or casual clothing. Only on the days when one of our suppliers came in for a business meeting he'd appear in a suit and being dressed up professionally. That worked very well for everybody except for that one time where he mixed up the dates and only realiced after being in the office. He managed to borrow a replacement shirt some coworker had in the office for emergencies, but his iron maiden t shirt still shined through and we just didn't find anything better than non-ripped jeans to replace his ripped ones. Plus he didn't bring anything to tie his hair so one of the girls in the office borrowed him a pink hairband so he could tie a ponytail.
I actually don't think our suppliers actually minded that much, but the whole thing was still hilarious and we were still talking about it years later. Also after that day he always kept a suit in his office just in case.

I actually had a place tell me NOT to dress up too much. "We're kind of a casual bunch here and I won't be dressed up so you don't have to." I told him I'd feel too weird not dressing nice. "Oh, um, okay, however you see fit."
I did dress fairly nicely. I got the job. It was a discount airline ticket agency. Had some odd moments and amazing moments while working there.

When I was working at a Hallmark store, we had this girl come in. She was wearing cut off denim shortie shorts folded over at the top to expose her belly, a halter top, flip flops, a nose ring that looked infected, eating an ice cream cone with her boyfriend in tow. She walks in and asks, "Are you hiring? And do you hire pregnant girls? Because I'm pregnant, so I'll need to go on maternity leave. Do you pay for that?"

I've had mixed success with interviews where I wasn't wearing pants. The one for a job I didn't particularly want I got the job, the ones for jobs I wanted I didn't get past that stage of interviewing.
All of those interviews were phone interviews (not even video) so I wasn't particularly concerned about being caught.

Had a buddy that had a company that kept bugging him to come in for an interview and he didn't care much whether he got the job or not. He showed up for the interview on a hot summer day when he was half way through a bike ride wearing a ratty pair of spandex cycling shorts that shall we say didn't leave much ambiguity about whether he was male, and an equally ratty shirt. He got the job. And he was almost overdressed for the interview. That was an interesting company. Their dress code was "if you can wear it on main street and not get arrested you can wear it to work". But my buddy was probably pushing that limit.

I managed a few offices for a large national law firm. Very professional environment. We were hiring for a client facing receptionist. Candidate was good on the phone screen, articulate and professional. Showed up for the interview in a severely wrinkled dress shirt, black jeans that had been cut off mid-calf, red and white striped socks, and huge platform Mary Jane shoes.

I was a hiring manager at a McDonald's for 3 years. Worst dressed interviewee I had showed up in her pot leaf pajamas. We had a strict zero tolerance drug policy. I was even nice, and told her I'd give her one chance to go home, and get dressed, and she could reschedule her interview towards the end of my shift. She never came back. Best dressed....well, it was a typical "blonde bombshell" that showed up to her interview AT MCDONALD'S in a form fitting, sparkling red dress.

How about "not enough clothes"? Had a woman show up for a job interview as secretary/assistant (for the taxes stuff) with a grey business suit and skirt combination. Looked quite fancy. Only realized something was off a few minutes in when I realized that this and the shoes was ALL that she wore. Good credentials, did quite well in the questions but I think she'd probably have better chances with a male boss.
