My dad was a contractor for several years. You definitely talk about that up front. Every bid he gave to a potential client had a detailed material cost list with it to show just how much would be going to just getting the materials to build their project.
But I think this story was more of a E-Bay business. Where you purchase the item from the person and they ship it to you. My Wife does this on the side and you are supposed to already have items you are selling. I think this guy's problem was he was buying the item off some one else, marking up the price and selling it to another. He over sold and spent the money on something else, so now couldn't buy the item to ship to his client.

Not just made by hand even stuff made in factories is like that.
It's called "just in time" manufacturing, it was popularized by Toyota a few decades ago and up until the chip shortage during pandemic, it was the go to business model for most companies.
Almost every item purchased doesn't exist at the original sale time, and the companies selling them don't yet own the raw materials either.

When I was 18 I took my car to a mechanic who ran a small auto shop. The total bill was going to be $3,000 and I gave him half upfront so he didnt have to pay for the parts. THREE MONTHS LATER after ghosting me, he calls at 7am and tells me he wont be able to work on my car unless I give the remaining balance. Said he had used the money I had given him to pay his bills. 😑

@tengonadacluewhatsgutsprec1419 This works for large companies like Toyota, who are receiving regular orders for products and placing regular orders for materials, and whose funds basically go into one big pot, but it really doesn't work for smaller businesses who don't have the profit margins to support this model or surplus funds to hand to purchase materials for existing orders if they hit a slow quarter.

On the other hand I one received a ticket for entering a one-way alley. I told the judge that the one-way sign had been painted over by city workers. The judge said they would check on it. A few days later I received a dismissal in the mail. A couple of days later there was a very nice ÖNE - WAY, DO NOT ENTER" painted sign. Whew!

Not at court, but as an expert witness in a case involving child pornography (as a CompSci prof). The defense was that the data on the hard drive really wasn't porn because they really were just ones and zeros. I was taken by surprise by the argument, but said that while that was true that they were ones and zeros, they weren't random. I could run any number of applications on them and get junk. But to run a program and "accidently" get child porn, not once, but many such images was so infinitesimally small that mathematically it would zero chance. It was child porn. The guy (an officer in the military) was convicted, dishonorable discharged, and spent many years in jail.

The cop was like "Judge, it was 1:30 AM and there was one other car on the road." Needless to say, she did not win her case.

This really depends on the thing they are shipping.
If it's just a generic item, this is just a bad version of drop shipping.
If it's something specialized, then he shouldn't extract from the business if it's clearly not doing well. This way can work, but generally you want to pay for the product of Customer C with the revenue of A and B.

  • @mattbonner12

For that last story, there are unfair biases between men and women in custody cases. It usually comes about because people tend to think that men are more aggressive. When I took a course in psychology (for some science credits) I learned that men and women are actually equally aggressive. Men tend to be more so physically, women more so socially (it's not a hard and fast rule and there are always exceptions). So, what often happens is that the bad wife, let's call her, will manipulate people to think that the person of her aggression, the husband, is that bad person and ruin his reputation, etc. That's why I personally don't agree with the whole "believe all women" sentiment. I would say take it seriously, yes, and report the issue. But, don't just automatically assume guilt. One of the principles of the legal system, or it's supposed to be anyways, is innocent until proven guilty (with the added part "beyond a reasonable doubt.")

Then he panics when someone buys an item on Monday and the next auction for that item is on Friday and tries to wheel and deal with the owners to buy it sooner.
Or someone else wins all of something just when he needs it, or the vendor asks for his stock back. That's always a fun conversation.

When I was serving grand jury duty, cops didn't always show up in uniform, but they were decently dressed, and that was just to sit in a conference room and give testimony without a judge present. How they thought it was a good idea to wander into court like that is beyond me.

I buy model trains and other hobby stuff on eBay since it's cheaper and you can generally find better availability, and if the seller doesn't have a photo they took themselves of the product they're selling, I'll ask if they actually have the product in stock before even considering making a purchase.

Story 11: not defending the guy involved, just going to push back on your assumptions. There are few things that would ever get me to strike a family member, particularly my wife or child. Up near the top of that list, though, is mishandling of a firearm. I don’t have time to let you figure it out and “slowly come to reason” if you’re mishandling it.
Now, based on the way it’s written, this sounds far more like he went apeshit over the wife touching his things, not mishandling a firearm. However, if someone is being dangerous with a firearm, particularly a firearm that I am responsible for, I’m going to do everything in my power to keep them from harming someone or themselves.

I worked a case in which, according to the suspect, he went to an apartment to see his girlfriend, who turned out wasn't there. The defendant says her roommate, another female, came on to him and propositioned him. He, being a virtuous young gentleman, turned her down. The roommate got so angry she grabbed up a kitchen knife and ran at him, swinging in. He defended himself and took the knife away from her----and she promptly, overcome with lust, ran into it. This didn't explain why all her clothes (except one sock) were flung around the room, her false teeth and wig were on the floor, and he had HER blood inside his pants. The DA had a further take: Seventeen times, front AND back??? She must have had a terrible sense of direction!!! Another case, a perp defending himself, went to cross-examine the purse snatching victim: Did you get a good look at my face when I took your purse?

In Story #9, I’m guessing he knew he was going to be convicted and only had the trial so he could taunt his victim. People who commit that sort of crime are often motivated by getting some sort of power trip out of hurting others, not merely by lust as you might expect.
