This was a great video. I'm about to be working on the HP team at Geek Squad City and was researching common problems, and although we don't use pen torches, we still have to find the issues and this has helped tremendously. Well put together.
I would like to thank you for this video i have repaired 3 dv 9000 laptops by following your techniques ,thanks for sharing the trick ,all the credit goes to you ,thanks.
I did this today and stayed until 2am but it was well worth it. It worked on me. It may be an old laptop but the joy of fixing it feels really good. Thanks for posting and sharing.
I had this problem for a long time. I finally completely lost my screen two days ago. I also lost my DVD drive and my sound a long time ago, but didn't think it was related. Well, to my surprise I tried this repair last night and am now typing on the very computer that didn't work yesterday morning. I even recovered my sound and my DVD drive. I know this video is old, but thank you very much. I didn't want to buy a new laptop.
Thanks for this video. Very handy video guide for me. I know my computers but hate navigating laptops. I also have big hands. Its much easier watching someone who has done it a million times.
Just got off the phone with one of your employees (George) ,who was very friendly and helpful with questions I had on the DV6 procedure. Since I will be doing it myself, my only problem is determining how hot the chip will get when I heat it with the pen torch. Thanks for the help and the video! Wish me good luck!
I was just looking around for tips on how to pull apart my broken laptop because I was bored. Now I have a working backup thanks to this video! Thanks!
Thanks for the complete explanation. This fix worked for with my DV9730. I had a different problem though in that the video portion worked, but the laptop wouldn't see my CD-ROM drive. This after hours and hours of all the fix attempts on-line and swapping out drives ultimately, this procedure resolved the problem. I also upgraded the heat sink, using a piece of copper conduit piece cut into quarters (about a postage stamp size) and used a mallet to flatten. This seems to have resolved the heavy fan usage, as I hardly hear it. Used thermal compound Arctic Silver AS5 from Radio Shack.
THIS WAS THE BEST INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO I HAVE EVER SEEN. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING AND LOOKING FOREVER FOR ONE LIKE THIS. THANKS MAN. YOU SHOWED EVERYTHING, FROM START TO FINISH. A TRIPLE PLUS!!!!
I just wanted to again say thanks for this video!!! I tried this method for more than 1 year ago and it kept my dv 9000 running 24/7 for over one year now!!!!!!!! Just a couple a weeks ago it broke down again, so I followed the instructions on this video and now its working again!!! Thank you mixcatcom!! God bless!!!
After thinking my Compaq CQ62 had a bad CPU due to a error code with One Flashing LED on the CapsLock,I ordered a replacement CPU on Ebay, installed it and it STILL didn't work. Just before tossing it into the junk bin, I found and used your method with using a Heat Gun, it now boots just fine. Thanks VERY much!
Just brought life back into a DV9000 today using this info, but I used an industrial heat gun for about 10 minutes at 1.5" away from GPU. Thank you Mixcatcom for a great video! It gave me confidence to give it a shot.
My HP dv9000 just went blank today with this exact problem. I found your solution to this problem immediately through a search. Great job! I had wondered if it was worth fixing, at the time it was brand new i spent approx $1100. I am glad to know that I now have an idea of the cost for repair. If I can find anyone in my area, I would be happy to ship it to you. Also thank you for the class action law suit against these laptops. thank you for your great professionalism, everyone here agrees!
Got an HP dv2000 series laptop for my freshmen year of college in 2008 lasted about a year and had to send it in twice... happy to see I could breathe some new life into it! Thanks
Thank you very much. after 5 years of computing without any problem on my DV9055EA now i got a blank screen. I followed your instructions and my HP laptop is working again. My laptop is a intel and had 2 heatpipes (1 for video and 1 for processor and chipset) But now its working fine ! Thank you very much.
Great video guys!!!!!! Followed this step for step. This girl was about to throw the laptop away until I told her I would give it a try. Followed your video, fixed the laptop and landed me a date A+++
Thanks a million. I bought a dv9000 off Craigslist and started having issues right away. A week later it was dead. I thought I blew my money... Whew... Working perfectly now.
Thank you so much. I had this problem in my HP dv9000 and I could fix it using your videos. The last week my laptop's screen showed coloured lines and after some seconds the computer rebooted itself. When I saw the GPU, there wasn't any thermal compound and the fan was very dirty. I resoldered the chip and I cleaned everything with a brush and I put "Artic Silver 5" (15€) between the chips and the copper bar. Now it works perfectly. I really appreciate your videos. Thanks from Spain.
Thank you so much!!! I just got back from Best Buy and was told it was a motherboard problem and that it would cost at least $500 to fix it and we were told it would be better if we just bought a new one. I'm not a computer genius, so you can be looking for my computer in the mail soon!! Thanks again!!
Wow. You are a master. I am just a padawan. I've done my fair share of computer repairs and even changed a dc jack once so I am daring enough to try this. But if it fails I may need to send it to you guys for a chip replacement. Damn HP for making such a faulty design. And foolish people for not taking care of their laptops, putting them on beds, pillows, or leather sofas and not letting them breathe underneath.
Hey mixcatcom! I just wanted to sincerely thank you for posting this video, my pavilion dv2000 special edition had the same problem. I followed exactly what you said but I used a heat gun instead to heat the GPU. Again thank you man, you saved me a bunch!!!
Thank you so much. I was able to repair a DV9500 because of this excellent instructional video. I have also noted your password rest video and I have a Dell with that very problem. I'm hoping for the same result. You're the best!!
you are awesome I own two of these things and I dj with one and use the other for lighting. The lighting one died on me just last night. I got to work on it and Wallah after a few minutes of torching the thing. let it set and cool then it's working better than before. video and wifi work great when i had no wifi and video died. Thank you so much for posting this on youtube i couldnt of done it without you!
i've followed this step by step and opened the computer DV9000 and fixed it . thanks for this awesome video i'm very happy . keep up the good work bro thanks .
That was quite interesting. I was glued to your every word and movements. I have a identical laptop with exactly the same issue. For over a year I walk through my work area, glance at it and mutter unmentionables. Have not been able to locate the proper "nerve" needed to dismantle the entire monster. I've built and refurbished dozens of desktops with every possible problem. But laptops....scare me. Anyway, that was highly enjoyable and informative. I would love to have had you as an instructor.
Thank you very much for your help. This video was and is very useful to me to all of us who are having this issue. In nine years I followed your technique three times and my laptop still works thank to you.
i've got a defective DV2000 with the same blank screen for over 6 months now sitting in my cabinet collecting dust, not knowing what to do with it, did bring to hp service center and said they will be charging me around $700! WTF! to change the motherbord....good thing I saw this video and tried it my self! and it worked!!!!!! Damn! THANKS!
Oh my goodness after years of my laptop not working I decided to give this a shot and it WORKED! :)) You rock, thank you so much! My only problems were the heat gun I was using only went up to about 180 C and I have 2 black screws leftover after I put it back together lol again, THANKS!
Pete...Just want to say THANKS SO MUCH!!! This video made my life MUCH easier!!! Got everything fixed, and I'm actually running about 30 degrees cooler now!!! I also replaced the fan and heat sink since I was in there! (to anyone doing this, on ebay, you can get a new fan and heat sink for $20 includes shipping, personally, I recommend just replacing the fan since your already this far into your system). Anyhow, THANKS again Pete!!!!
Did it for me thank you! Ours was getting more and more unreliable and then failed. Followed your tuition, built a heat sink out of an old alumium CPU cooler and jobs a good'n! Well pleased thank you very much!
AMAZING !!!!! We use German Infrared Top and Bottom heat for this process. I would say that this is a band-aid fix at best. We remove the BGA graphics chip and put new solder spheres under it. This process is called reballing. Its actually the only sure fire way of permanently repairing the no video issues with the DV series and other laptops. It would be the best investment for your company. In any event..... GOOD JOB WITH THE TORCH !!!!!
Thanks for the info. One of my customers replaced their laptop with the same problem. While it is an older pc i can now fix it and return it for their kids to use.
these guys were awesome!! unbelievable !! service was way faster than expected.. they're honest knowedgeable and straightforward .. NUTS soo damn good!!
I've done this repair about six times on customers laptops. I used a laser thermometer gun to make sure I got the temp right with the torch. I also decided to use a paper template and drill small holes in a circular pattern in the plastic right beneath the GPU so extra air could get to it. It looked professional and also kept it about five degrees cooler.
Thanks Pete. This is the real value of the internet. Information is free to attain and should be made available, for free, to those who seek it. This video gives one the knowledge to tackle a VERY difficult fix. Not so much the fix but getting to that point is where I found the challenge. This works! (lots of screws though).
Dear Pete, Thank you very much for your valuable help, it was really miracle to see some display on my laptop screen after following your methods.. I was really tired of trying all methods before following yours, you have helped me to save a lot... thanks a lot again for your great help.. Suthan
FYI doing the reflow the second time worked! Thank you so much for your assistance!! It was really a very simple fix as long as you know what to do!! LOL Thanks again!! Sincerely, Joe C.
Yea I used an actual digital 4 sided air tool from my work. Set it to 410f, just slowly rotated it around the graphics chip for about minute (I started while it was at about 350f, then after about 20 seconds it hit 410f steady), let it cool down and put on the custom copper heat sink. Took an hour and a half to complete the whole project with this video, once again thanks.
YOU are awesome!!! I tried this methode and it works. It was the same problem with the blank screen and the led bar at a HP Pavilion dv6000. But i use a heat gun at level 1 (375°C) with a ~20cm distance for round about 1 minute. So many thanks for your video and tipps. Greetings from Germany! :) (ok, i have 2 screws left at the end, but who cares :) )
@@степанстепаненко-б1э Good question, it run serveral years after that, but had to do the procedure twice during that time. In the end the device gets replaced with an new laptop. ;)
Thanks a billion for this video!! I used a Wagner heat gun on the lowest setting with an inferred laser gun to get it to the right temp. Tried the battery hookup to see if screen would work and it didn't. Well the laptop is 6 yrs old so I said what the heck and blasted it with heat again, applied thermal paste and some old pieces of copper, and it works now! BUT I have 9 screws that I can't figure out for the life of me where they fit, and I don't care. Use this more as a desktop anyway. Thanks!
Followed your guide except with the torch. Had my HP DV9072ea in pieces after +2 hours. Added a flattened smooth penny from 1964 (wet sanded with a 1200 paper!). Added thermal paste both to the CPU and GPU. Thing would still not work. There are more than 60 screws that have to be removed! Thankfully most of them are either short silver ones or black ones. Anyway, the video was very helpful!
I have a DV 6744TX which I purchased brand new in 2008. Ran flawlessly for ten years until yesterday. I have this very same problem. Hope to get it repaired soon.
This can be fixed very easily - When you power on the laptop, shut the lid down quickly, and wait for the system to start. And there you go! You will have to do it every time you start the computer though, so I guess this solution is better in the long run. But thumbs this up so everyone can see! Worked for me on a dv6000.
Thanks for the video. Never pulled apart a laptop before but managed just fine. You made reference to some of the ribbons/screws, but didn't exactly show all of them being taken out. Would have made it easier, but I was able to figure it out. Ended up baking the whole board at 375F for 10 minutes. Also used a '68 penny that I sanded smooth as a sink over the GPU to replace the little foam pad. Added a little high quality grease also. Put it all back together and worked perfectly.
@mixcatcom Thanks again, to you and all the guys like you who take the time to make videos like this to help us, the uneducated. I would definitely recommend that people send their laptops into to you if they are more concerned about getting it working and want a legitimate fix. This was more of a science project for me.
Hey man thanks for tutorial on line just had the same issue with mine dv9000 what should I do I purchased this unit long long time ago may be 15 years and I dont think its still on warranty so pls help thank you very much it was fantastic how you demonstrate the tutorial hope to hear from you soon cheers
I performed this to clean out the fan heatsinks because the dust was causing overheating, the likely cause of the laptops problem in this video. This is not for most amateurs to attempt. I now simply use a good vacuum on the bottom of the laptop to suck the dust back out the fan hole. You may have to buy a can of compressed air and apply it to the side vent next to the fan hole while you simultaneously vacuum it out. Make sure you have updated the bios it really helps prevent shutdowns.
I've had to do the same surgery on a Dell before and yeah..it does really take a couple hours to fix these darn things right. The cool thing though, is you really get an appreciation for how they fit everything together. Its like legos, except more exciting.
Thanks very much for this video, I fixed my dv9000! I used the heat gun method. I only had 4 screws left over and I put the hard drive in the #2 bay. Thanks again!!- OG
Just like to add, great video and obviously an issue as this has had over a million hits!, this must surely have hurt HP sales, i am in united kingdom, just purchased dv9705 (spares or repairs) yesterday for 50 GBP, it has the problem of trying to boot up every few seconds but no joy, took it to bits last night (balls off fluff near and around fan components) and have ordered 2 copper shims (0.8mm), thermal paste and a small butane gas gun off Fleabay, wish me luck!
thanks a lot, worked great, i stopped the heat gun as soon as i saw the bottom of the card bubbling, and cut our the old heat sink rubber and filled it up with MX-4 thermal compound, nice video, but lol i have ten tiny screws left over but the laptop works.
Thank you for this video, I managed to fix mine without a pen torch, I used a Butane Lighters and heated up the GPU, fitted a copper plate like yours and worked perfectly. Thanks for this vid!!
@mixcatcom I got it working for now using a little trick one of my friends told me - When you power on the laptop, quickly shut the lid, and wait for the system to start, I have no idea what happens when you do it, but it works for me! I have to do it everytime I boot the computer though.
Thanks for this video! The thermal design of this laptop is just horrible. My Turion x2 was over 60-70°C (140-158 ºF) reapplyed the thermal paste, pads... Few mods (bigger wents,...) The wents are 40-50% blocked by the plastic mesh glued on (Memory/Wifi module cover, HDD cover)... And now it's under 40°C (104 ºF) per core and done the GPU chip repair! Thanks again!
Great video! does it work with aluminum instead of copper? and ive been thinking of adding a fan do you know if theres a good way to wire an extra fan ive heard ppl do wire it to the usb. is there a better way?. Thanx!
As far as I know, the effective performance of the laptop can not be judge now because the processors have not really been subjected to their normal working temperature. Unless this is done and the system sustained then we can conclude. But all the same, the guy did a great job worthy of commendation.
Great video thanks for posting, going to be attempting the "fix" in the next few days. Question...on my dv9000 the silver foil behind the screen is damaged on the left hand side in fact i have removed the left hand hinge as it is damaged and not functioning. will the damaged foil have any affect on the computer's function?
Hey Pete, Great video, and yes I have this problem, I was just wondering one thing, would it be beneficial to add some flux when heating around the chip for better connection, what I get from the video is that one or more of the chip connectors has a bad connection and we are re-soldiering it by heating it up???
hello my friend! just wanted to say thanks for your video, many many thanks:) . with the torching i managed to fix my hp pavilion dv9500 and make it boot finally. for the heat sink mod i used copper taken out from car engine gasket :p i cut it square and polished it of course and used some arctic silver 5 to make the contact heatsink/copper and GPU. it dropped temperature from 80C to 60C degrees gpu temp. i am happy i fixed my laptop because of you, thanks again and greetings from Cy
That is correct. Reheating the Chip, allows for Solder points underneath to melt and once you are done heating it, during the cooling process it re-seats itself correctly. -Anibal
Holy shit! This video is true! I just did everything, and use a lighter to overheat the gpu and now its working! My laptop is back to life again! Is working perfectly everything in order... Thanks dude you are awesome have a nice christmas and a happy mew year ^^
Not my model, but I watch the who video. Very Well Done! I have the same video issue on both an HP x1215n and an HP G60.. This fix worked on the x1000 (x1215n), but not the G60. I am going to take apart the G60 again and heat the video processor longer.. Thanks (Спасибо) Landis.
Thanks for taking time out to show how to fix this problem. It's much appreciated. My dv9000 shows this symptom and would like to try this fix however I have only one question... what's the reason for pentorching the graphics chip?
What an absolutely fantastic video fellas. How on earth did you find out how to solve this problem in the first place?? Also are all laptops so complicated to get in to, they don't make it easy for you guys do they lol. I have exactly the same problem with my dv9500 but i don't think my local repair shop (UK) have anywhere near your level of skills
I enjoyed your video it was very informative. I am working on a HP Pavilion DV9000. Instead of a torch can I use a hot air gun to heat up the chip? Any help would be appreciated.
What is the GPU you use to replace the DV's? I'm just curious - I've long regretted not buying a slightly pricier computer which had a 8600M GT, whereas the DV which just jumped on the blank screen bandwagon had a 8600M GS. That aside, thanks so much! This video is superbly informative and useful. Particularly at my current location (Lao PDR), where getting a suitable replacement is not feasible. As an aside I just had a glance at your mixcat mainpage and find it quite enjoyable. All the best!
Thank you, so much for this video! It salvaged my laptop, and on top of fixing the black screen issue, the WiFi card re-appeared (was disappeared shortly before the black screen issue). /Ole
My man Pete, I have a dv2416nr that I was going to scrap but after watching your video I am going to give this a college try over the next couple of days... my only question is this this. Instead of using a heavy foil over the board can I"double up" with the soda can to protect... let me know soon. Either way love the video. Keep it up. We can survive this so call recession!
Thank you for this vid, My video went out this morning and I had it up and running again by early afternoon. I didn't add the copper shim like you did, but I added thermal grease to the GPU where there was none before. How long will this fix last, Is it a long term fix, or can I expect a recurrence in the near future?
Your video was really helpful and gave me the confidence to attempt this repair. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get it working with technique. I noticed one of the silver rectangle things(I don't know what it's called) came off of the gpu when I removed the heatsink, so I think I have other problems. Thanks again and it was a fun learning experience!
This was a great video. I'm about to be working on the HP team at Geek Squad City and was researching common problems, and although we don't use pen torches, we still have to find the issues and this has helped tremendously. Well put together.

So like where the info for the class action suit. id like a free replacement since its the manufacturer fault.
The suit went nowhere
That’s sad
Bravoo! He is alive again ! Instead a pen on the gas I used the electric blower (300'C) with narrow lips (10mm) only 3 seconds ! Greetings from Serbia
ha i stole the coa from the back of the laptop. thank you 1080p

Thank you so much for this video! My G7 HP laptop had that black screen issue too recently and I was able to fix it just like you did in the video!
Dear Pete,
Thank you very much for your valuable help, it was really miracle to see some display on my laptop screen after following your methods.. I was really tired of trying all methods before following yours, you have helped me to save a lot... thanks a lot again for your great help..
Suthan
FYI doing the reflow the second time worked! Thank you so much for your assistance!! It was really a very simple fix as long as you know what to do!! LOL
Thanks again!!
Sincerely,
Joe C.
I just want to say THANK YOU for helping me!!!! I followed your tutorial and bam! My laptop is working again!
(ok, i have 2 screws left at the end, but who cares :) )
how long did your laptop work after repair?
@@степанстепаненко-б1э Good question, it run serveral years after that, but had to do the procedure twice during that time. In the end the device gets replaced with an new laptop. ;)
this is one of the best vidioes iv seen on laptop repaires
This works fine..... thanks a lot.. the heat gun cost me 16 pounds and now the laptop works fine. God bless you for this advice and show video!!!! :)
Thank you so much! I tried this on an old Presario V6500 with the same problem - really didn't expect it to work, but it did! So thank you :)
My DV9000 so far had screen flicking and build-in wireless quit working, display can fail any time right now. Thanks for the video.
Hey man thanks for tutorial on line just had the same issue with mine dv9000 what should I do I purchased this unit long
long time ago may be 15 years and I dont think its still on warranty so pls help thank you very much it was fantastic how you demonstrate the tutorial hope to hear from you soon cheers
Thanks again!!- OG
hey man good guide, if I do not have copper, can I use aluminum foil between the heatsink and the GPU processor?
That's great news. Glad all went well and hope you enjoyed our video.
All the best,
Anibal
Great job on repair. Looks like you have significant knowledge about this issue.
Thx mixcatcom u just saved me from buying A new laptop thx very much
thanks a lot, worked great, i stopped the heat gun as soon as i saw the bottom of the card
bubbling, and cut our the old heat sink rubber and filled it up with MX-4 thermal compound,
nice video, but lol i have ten tiny screws left over but the laptop works.
Thank you for this video, I managed to fix mine without a pen torch, I used a Butane Lighters and heated up the GPU, fitted a copper plate like yours and worked perfectly. Thanks for this vid!!
Best video i've seen on the subject. I'll try it on a couple of compaq I have lying around. Thanks a lot.
@mixcatcom I got it working for now using a little trick one of my friends told me - When you power on the laptop, quickly shut the lid, and wait for the system to start, I have no idea what happens when you do it, but it works for me! I have to do it everytime I boot the computer though.
Thank you for this video in Hungary! That's worked ,fixed it ;)
Thanks for this video!
Thanx!
Wow, cheers for that!...i just fixed my laptop in about an hour by following your vid!
much respect to the nerds!!!
As far as I know, the effective performance of the laptop can not be judge now because the processors have not really been subjected to their normal working temperature. Unless this is done and the system sustained then we can conclude. But all the same, the guy did a great job worthy of commendation.
Glad to hear. Thanks and hope you enjoyed our Video.
Sweet!! This also fixed a non-posting dv9715. So if you get one that just restarts over and over again, this may help you too!

Thanks (Спасибо)
Landis.
Thanks for taking time out to show how to fix this problem. It's much appreciated. My dv9000 shows this symptom and would like to try this fix however I have only one question... what's the reason for pentorching the graphics chip?
nice video man good job, one question why did you hheat up the video chip?
Repaired my laptop with this method...works great (used a blowtorch because we didn't have a pen torch!!!!!)
Hi, first of all thanks for the great video. I would like to know for how long should I keep the fire on? and at 210 degrees, right?
Ok, thanks a lot :))
Very nice video which help really to dismount and rassembly hardware and reparing step by step.. Many thanks Peter..
did it with my HP DV9700 and it works 100% thanks alot for your video :)
Your video and work is very professional. Thanks for your help. Take care your self.
Good to see a fix for this laptop issue. Shame my model wasn't listed in the class action lawsuit and now I have a $1300 paperweight.
/Ole
Just did this, it worked, still need to actually reassemble, but the screen came on after the initial test!
