Gretzky was a compiler after turning 30.
From age 30 and on until the end of his career, Gretzky scored 188 goals in 592 games.
26.0 goal pace over 82 games.
    Since Ovechkin's 30th birthday, he's scored 395 goals in 686 games.
47.2 goal pace over 82 games.

OV is a machine. Not only does he have the best shot from the slot I've ever seen, but he both takes and dishes out huge hits on a regular basis. I've heard Gordie Howe was the same way. Conversely, Wayne Gretzky had enforcer protection his entire career (Semenko, McSorley, etc.) and anyone who delivered a perfectly clean yet stiff hit was typically chased down by Semenko / McSorley / someone else to fight them or at least receive an often late / dirty hit in return.

It's nice to see one of Gretzky's records being broken. Also I'm guessing Ovie will hit 900 goals during 2025 - and that amount of goals in the NHL will probably never happen again, what a time to be alive!

As a Caps fan, I think the team playing so well is a huge buoy for the chase. Ovi dealing with his father’s loss and our lackadaisical scoring rate most of last season had me starting to doubt if he’d keep up the chase but this season has been amazing. My biggest concern is him staying healthy moving forward but fingers crossed

Ovi's broken leg was the first "long term injury" of his 20-season career. 5 weeks. The longest injury related games streak missed before the broken leg was 6.
I am a 35-year Capitals fan have had the privilege of watching Ovi's entire career. I never saw a guy as large, as fast, and could HIT so hard as 22-year-old Ovi. 6'3" 240 lbs. with sprinter speed. Ovi is not as fast anymore. His slapper has lost a few ticks. But Ovi still has a nasty wrister and amazing hands. Ovi is more in the slot with the garbage goals. We all know that he wants to hang in the off-wing circle and bomb on the one-time. It's been that way for years and no one has been able to stop it.
Ovechkin was the majority of The Capitals for years. Ovi has a lot of support and doesn't have to be the guy every night. Alakesi (?) Protas is doing breaking out on Ovi's wing. Dylan Strome is showing up as a 1C. Connor McMichael is breaking out. Pierre-Luc Dubois is doing well as 2C. He can just be "a guy" and play. 2C has been a black hole for most of Capitals history.
Logan Thompson was traded from The Golden Knights and has been a great 1A/1B GK tandem with Charlie Lingren.
But Ovi is playing like he is 10 years younger. The passion is fully lit, and we are seeing magic

This Caps fan of 40 years agrees with all of this. Last season was hard to watch, but I love the moves that the front office made this offseason, especially Chychrun. I also am loving Spencer Carbery and what hes done with the team. This season has been fun to watch. Lets Go Caps!

Young Ovi did not know any English when he came to The NHL. Ovi dove head first and tried his most to learn English.
Someone asked young Ovi why he was so durable.
Ovi responded, Russian Machine never breaks."
    That response is a classic.

The craziest part of this is Ovechkin has a chance to score more goals than Gretzky in FEWER GAMES PLAYED! That is absolutely incredible considering Gretzky played in a much higher scoring era with a lower standard of goaltending, and Ovechkin had multiple younger years robbed by lockouts/COVID. He’s already clearly the greatest goalscorer of all time.

Gretzky's first season in the NHL was 1979-80. His 92 goal season was 1981-82 (one of TEN 50+ goal scorers that season). The 1980s was firewagon hockey - 50 goal seasons were commonplace (9 in 1979-80, 8 in 1980-81, 10 in 1981-82, 7 in 1982-83, 8 in 1983-84, 9 in 1984-85, 6 in 1985-86, 5 in 1986-87, 8 in 1987-88, 6 in 1988-89, 8 in 1989-90), including such household names as Blaine Stoughton, Pierre Larouche, Rick Kehoe, Al Secord, Mike Bullard, John Ogrodnick, Bobby Carpenter, Craig Simpson, Brian Bellows, and Gary Leeman).

After he turned 30, Gretzky had only two 30+ goals seasons. It’s 3 if you count the 1990-91 season, he turned 30 in the middle of the season.
Ovi has scored 30+ every season after he turned 30, with the exception of the Covid shortened season. That season he scored at a 30 goal pace had it been an 82 game season.

It's a record I'm torn on him breaking. With the whole profile picture not changing, some Russian player's taking clear stances on Russia's invasion and him not speak on it. Being the biggest Russian star in the league, that was and continues to be tough to watch.
Growing up though, watch him play since I was a kid, I think it's amazing there's going to be a guy break one of the records no one ever thought would be touched. H/t to you Alex, good luck on the chase

  • @gordonlong3095

This is exciting… I remember it was a big deal when Gretzky broke Howe’s record. To me, this is the equivalent of baseball’s career home run record.
I hope Ovie makes it. He came here to play hockey, and boy has he ever done so! He’s definitely a first-ballot HOFer.
Since he is Russian, I’m sure he’s gonna take some flak like Hank Aaron did as he got closer to Ruth’s record. But he certainly will have earned the record.
I really hope the league hypes this up. It’s definitely the sort of thing to attract new fans and reel old ones back in.
    Go Ovie!
