"Blade seems like the kind of guy who is always trying really, really hard to be cool and yet somehow still succeeds." That's the best thing I've heard said in a long while.
I'd argue that Watchmen is even better at feeling like a comic book brought to life on the big screen. It embraces the aesthetic, over-the-top fighting scenes and pulls of the whole "movie about a comic book about comic books" thing really well.
Korra Martell Scott Pilgrim was a excellent adaption from the comic. I'm curious, you have any other recommendations on a super-hero type comic book movie?
I agree, but there's one video that was just a big oof for me... the atrocity that was the last jedi review. That was hard to stomach. Also I'm pretty on the fence about TLJ myself, it's not because I hate it and he doesn't. Just read the comments (no, I promise, it's one of the few productive comment sections on the whole site), they nail down why it was such a poor video, most of them (some of them) with more eloquence and tact than others. This isn't a star wars fan boy or hater telling you to get educated, just thought that particular video was gross for its own reasons in his writing and "points" and wanted to share that view. Yeah I'm literally leaving this comment like it's a sensitive bomb. That's because talking about the last jedi in any form but either of the two extremes (IT WAS A MASTERPIECE IN SUBVERSION OF EXPECTATIONS, or, THE NEW STAR WARS CONTINUES TO CUCK MEN THROUGH THE POWER OF CINEMA, MARY SUE MARY SUE) is really dangerous on the internet apparently. I lie somewhere in the vast reaches of the forsaken middle. That's all.
After getting an Oscar for Green Book, Marshala Ali called up Kevin Feige. “Holy shit, what’s up Marshala?” “Hey Kevin, you guys haven’t done anything with Blade for a while, right?” “Uh, yeah.” “You’re making a streaming service, right?” “Yeah....” “You’re rebooting Blade.” “Uh, okay, sure thing.” And it’s fucking happening.
The only disagreement I have is the part about Chris Evans' Cap. One of his best traits is being wholly unconcerned with looking cool, setting him apart from pretty much every other character in the MCU. I have so much love for that character, and it's partly because because he never even considers his own self-image. Every other character can worry about being cool, Cap's only worried about being *right* ;-)
Derek Didear I agree. Humility is the thing that makes Chris Evans CA great. Evans has such an endearing personality that he is to Cap as much as RDJ is to Iron Man now.
Rishi Joe Sanu Absolutely goddamn right. It's a shame that it took The Winter Soldier for folks to pick up on that, as it'd been there all along. But maybe we just needed him fully immersed in our century to catch all this. The other thing about Cap is that he never stops. Don't matter the odds, don't matter the firepower. He fixes his mind on an objective, he either gets it done or dies trying. It's that level of commitment which makes people just naturally fall in line behind him.
Don't forget to watch the behind the scenes stuff with Del Toro, he's got some funny stories about the movie. The two that stuck out to me were the dirty window from the movies intro, and how they originally wanted the ancient vampire to have hair...
four13dream Yeah, the behind the scenes stuff convinced me I needed to know more about del Toro's work. He brings such love and knowledge to all things genre.
Went to the del toro exhibition at the art gallery of Ontario yesterday and it was amazing btw people. Go. And So happy you did blade. Ive loved blade since I was a kid and it's nice to see someone bring it back and appreciate it. Have all three on Blu Ray and love them all (the first two more than the third of course).
Blade needs his own Netflix series. I'd love an R-rated film, but the MCU would never allow it. Hell, if they could somehow find a way to make the first and second Snipes' Blade films legitimately canon somehow that would be great, along with having Snipes return. In fact, I believe Korg from Ragnarok mentions something about vampires which essentially canonises them existing in the MCU. That is just perfect set-up for Blade! Come on Feige, you've got the rights back, now it's time to make it.
I disagree. Marvel/Disney might well change its mind on R-rated movies after seeing the success of Deadpool and Logan. If this trend continues in Deadpool sequels and spin-offs (maybe we even get an R-rated Doctor Doom that doesn't suck? *fingers crossed*), they might jump on the trend. Of course the Blade movie would have to be very self-contained, as it cannot feel like required viewing to follow the current meta-story of its time - but I think there is a high probabily that Marvel moves away from one central plot after Avengers 4, at least for a while.
There was a rumor Marvel was going to make a movie about Blade's daughter with Weasley Snipes coming back, but that was like a year ago and there haven't been any developments sense.
Yes. There is only one Iron Man and that's Robert Downey Jr. One Wolverine and that's Hugh Jackman. One J. Jonah Jameson and that's JK Simmons. And one Blade and that's Wesley Snipes
@@LukeLovesRose ya kinda makes you wonder why they never had a J Jonah in the amazing spiderman or the new homecoming. It is like they are afraid to try and have someone new.
Did anyone suddenly become really focused on the cyclist in the background at 7:45 and for some reason watched the other window waiting for him to appear after?
You and I have very similar taste in movies (based on our love of Blade 2 and Mask of The Phantasm) but you're a thousand times better at articulating what you love about each movie! As much as I love your analytical content, I will never get sick of just watching you gush over a movie. Keep it up man! I'm glad I found this channel :)
I was absolutely mesmerized by Blade II in theaters, which is not what I had expected at all. The feel of Guillermo del Toro movies is unmatched. And agreed that Wesley Snipes nails those poses.
I've watched this film countless times since I was about 10 years old. I was never one for horror films, and am not as much, but the combination of horror and action that del Toro combines is incredible. He juxtaposes the badass, the hilarious, and the terror with such finesse. Also I'd watch that Blade IV ten times over.
This video made me nostalgic, made me remember the "the good old times" when I could go into a store as a kid and buy the VHS for Blade with a note from my parents saying they gave me the permission to do so. Can't do that anymore :/
Great work! Love what you're doing with this channel. You should do a weekly discussion with a couple other people, talking about current topics within the film industry. You have the perfect blend of intellectual thoughts mixed with pop culture.
The best Wesley, and Del Toro film. So awesome I bought the sountrack to remember. The "I against I" song is an anthem. This film came out when, "Resident Evil" came out, and it kicked its ass.
The best thing about the movie is the camera in the final fight, it makes it look like blade is the player controlled avatar in a videogame and i fucking love it.
In an Ultimate Spider-Man special, from more than 10 years ago I, Spidey meets Blade almost exactly like you describded; coursing a robber in a dark alley, who happens to be a vampire, Blades comes in, kill the vampire and leaves a terrified P.Parker with a lot of questions and nightmares in his mind.
All the family videos should end with "salute mi familia". Just to bring it all back to Fast and Furious. Also your right about everything. The neogenic nightmare saga of the 90's Spider-man animated series has a great crossover with Blade and Punisher and I want that again.
Your Spider-Man/Blade link sounds vaguely familiar to the episode on the 90's series where Spider-Man did meet Blade and Whistler but it was in regards to Michael Morbius, a sort of mutant vampire bat who feeds on plasma and went out with his crush/friend Felicia Hardy, eventual Black Cat.
I love this video bro. I loved how you explained how BLADE II is the bomb and now I`m gonna have to go rewatch it cause it was that good. So I comment, liked, & subscribed to your channel for this alone great video, you have a new fan.
The only problem I have with that is I'm pretty sure that even if Trump were a vampire, that fight would be over in 5 seconds. You could try to have him fight well but, c'mon, suspension of disbelief guys.
Nice write up, one thing I really appreciated in the Blade 2 was how many wrestling moves there was in the action, like the first film was all martial arts but there were elbow drops and american suplexes in this
Blade meeting Spider-Man would be a perfect introduction to his character in the MCU, it would also be awesome because Blade and Spider-Man also met in the 1994 Spider-Man The Animated Series so it would kinda be symbolic
Thanks for the warning. I watched anyways. Another great video. Drinking directly from the bottle ftw! You didn't give that guy on the bike any credit tho :/
The Reapers seem to be a huge influence towards the design of the strigoi in The Strain. Super rad that he was so proud of the designs that he took elements from them and expanded upon them.
What’s your favorite whiskey, Patrick? I can’t quite make out the label on this bottle but clearly you’re a whiskey fan, as am I, and I’m always looking for good recommendations. Thanks!
Loved Blade II, best of the trilogy hands down. As much as I'd love to say I like your Spider-Man/Blade pitch... we kinda already got that in the "Ultimate Spider-Man" comic, bruh. Only instead of "There's a whole world you don't know about" line, we got "I WILL $#*%ING EAT YOUR HEART FOR BREAKFAST!!!" I miss the Ultimate Universe.
It always kind of pissed me off that "Black Panther" was often billed as the "first black superhero movie". I mean the blade 1 and 2 were not that long ago and were huge. How did everyone forget about them!!!!????
I would trade all MCU movies for 1 good Blade movie any time. Blade II is great, but I have a soft spot for the first one. It rides the line between a full fledged B movie and a big blockbuster so perfectly. Also my second favorite W. Snipes performance (I mean nothing will top Simon Phoenix)
Martin Zyka I love Blade as much as the next guy but c'mon, trade ALL the mcu movies for one Blade movie? That's going too far...Spider-Man Homecoming, Captain America Winter Soldier, and the first Iron Man movie are absolutely epic

I'd argue that Watchmen is even better at feeling like a comic book brought to life on the big screen.
It embraces the aesthetic, over-the-top fighting scenes and pulls of the whole "movie about a comic book about comic books" thing really well.
Spider Man 1 and 2..with a dose of the Kickass movies, lets not forget WonderWoman. WonderWoman was liquid Fire
I LOVE BLADE II but
Scott Pilgrim Vs the world?
That the more comic book you can ever get.
Korra Martell Scott Pilgrim was a excellent adaption from the comic. I'm curious, you have any other recommendations on a super-hero type comic book movie?
James Gunn's Super felt really comickbooky to me.
This is by far my favorite series on your channel

The only way to stop Steve Rogers is to convince him that he's wrong. MCU Cap is the ideal superhero in that way, and the ideal American in my eyes.
Derek Didear True...but you know something? He's usually right.
The Strain was basically Guillermo del Toro deciding he wanted to have more of people fighting his body-horror vampire designs again for 46 episodes.
show couldve used more Del Toro
This is the only del toro film I haven't watched. That is going to change
Vicente Ortega Rubilar it's a fun one.

The best thing to do with it by far.
a netflix series as a sequel to the trilogy, with him as a grizzled mentor to the next Blade would be best of both.

I agree completely. Marvel needs to bring Blade back and have Wesley be Blade.
When the Fox/Marvel deal goes down will Disney own Blade? If so GdT needs to do Blade 4
