I couldn't sleep so I wrote a Kyrie

- (I used Cantamus)
(Somehow I forgot to add the "h" in "Christe. I removed it so the playback worked properly.)
Piano reduction score: drive.google.com/drive/folder...
Dedicated to my friend and composer Ferran Lopez Carrasquer. youtube.com/@Carrasquercompos...
That's literally what I did. I have covid right now and I am not feeling too great, so I struggle to sleep (even though I'm tired).
I decided to entertain myself doing some mindless harmony on Musescore and I ended up composing a miniature Kyrie. It took me around 3 hours (plus some adjustments later the following days, so around 6 hours).
I have other projects ongoing but I didn't feel focused for them
Anyways, I really need to work on my counterpoint and consider starting sketches for a choral piece.
I managed to get such a good audio using the Cantamus app, it is worth it! I found it thanks to Ramán Cano: • Four-Part Canon - Ubi ... (Composer specialized in counterpoint).

Very nice!
Maybe a difficult question, but what is your method going forward writing this? Do you think melody and bass first? Any books/other on the subject you would care to recommend?
Any course that teaches 17-18th century 4 part writing. Learn chord progressions, voice leading, and non harmonic tones and this is what you can make on the fly
Thank you! In this case I used my intuition for most of the composition, so it is kinda blurry. But I try to find a balance between melodic interest in each voice and use good harmony, the bass is very important of course. I also try to use microideas like the G/G# clash at measure 7 to propell other sections like the start of the Christe (soprano and tenor).
I think the trick is to find small contours or phrases and try to combine them in such a way that the harmony is consonant or that the dissonances make sense and are well resolved.
To be honest I never fully read any harmony book. I have had a few teachers who taught me the rules. But my advice is to copy the masters. Check 4 voices Renaissance pieces, try to harmonize basso continuo recitativos from a Bach passion, analyze Bach's chorals from a harmonic and melodic point of view, check later works like the prelude to the 3rd act of Wagner's "Die Meistersinger", etc.
I hope this was helpful. Remember that practice ultimately is the most important factor.
My personal method of composing is almost identical to this. Never had any training
@@NooticusThat's awesome!
@@Ivan_1791 Very interesting. Basically youre saying music is a bunch of phrases put together and harmonized so they make sense. neat
That's pretty fun to sing and the Cantamus generated vocals actually sound pretty nice (very robotic, but I think it adds to the unsettling harmonies you used in some places)
Thanks! Yes, I agree, the combination is quite interesting. I'm thankful to Román Cano for letting me know about the existence of that app, I will link one of his videos in my description.
you guys know vocaloid too, right?
That explains the lack of emotion and nuance in the singing even though I liked the piece in general. As a singer, I paid as much attention to the performance as the arrangement. Really nice bit of composition. Would love to hear it done by actual vocalists and the interpretation they would bring. But as a tool for a composer to get a decent idea of how the piece sounds, I'm sure it quite valuable. I wonder if things like slurs and breath marks would make Cantamus sound just a little bit better.
@@oldguydoesstuff120 Once I get a good performance by singers I will share it with everyone. I had in mind doing the rest of the Misa Brevis and handing it to a choir.
Also I still need to try that thing you mentioned with slurs, maybe it helps cantamus make the singing more articulate.
@@oldguydoesstuff120 Accurate vowels would also be nice. There is a difference between "y" and "i".
Beautiful harmonies
Thanks, I love augmented 6ths as you can see haha.
Thank you for introducing me to Cantamus. I've been overlaying the Musescore 4 vocal sounds with the Cantamus playback to have discernible lyrics in my choral writing, but still maintaining the full rich sound.
You are welcome! I bet it sounds incredible.
Very smooth writing, sorry about the illness/insomnia. I hope you get better soon.
Thanks, I think composing helped a bit somehow haha.
May I say, this is immensely beautiful! I would love for a real choir to perform this - a piece deserving of such a presentation!
Thank you!
Amazing as usual. I love that it almost plays on the introduction of Mass In B minor at the start. Kinda reminds me of the opening chorus to Kyrie 1 but then goes off somewhere else completely.
Pretty good for "mindless" harmony. :) Hope sleep finds you soon, dear friend
I think I will sleep next night lol, I'm not tired.
That alto section is to die for❤
Thanks!
This is gorgeous! If you haven't published it yet, I think this piece is very worthy of being published. This would sound incredible sung by a live choir in a Mass
Thank you! And I agree, I might give an opus number to the whole mass setting.
I couldn't sleep so I listened to this. It's actually quite nice!
Nice comment haha.
Beautiful composition! I love the harmonies. It certainly pays tribute to the great composers from back in the day, with a tinge of modernity I hear in some of the chords! (That’s actually sort of my style. Traditional, yet adding new things so that people know my music was written in this century 😆)
Great work! I’m eager to see what else you have!
Glad to see you enjoyed the piece. If you are up to compose a piano piece I'm organizing a composition contest at the moment. I love when people take tradition and reformulate it in new ways.
@@Ivan_1791 I’m not much of a piano composer! I’m trying to get better at the instrument before I start writing for it more! Thank you for the offer though!
@@VincentGiza-Composer No worries. Then I hope you will enjoy my future content.
I love this!! It sounds dissonant but harmonious at the same time
Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy! Lord Jesus Christ Son of the Living God, have mercy on us sinners.
😅
Wow, my jaw literally dropped a couple of times during this. Such utterly surprising and wonderful harmonic choices! Bravo 😊
Nice haha, thank you!
The beggining reminds me of Bach´s Messe h moll
Bro this would go crazy on Holy Thursday
So glad Cantamus is becoming more well known because it’s incredible !
Beautiful harmony. Great job!
Nice voice leading - I love the use of suspensions and contrary motion. Well done❤
Thank you. 😄
play this at my funeral
Appropriately, this had quite the soporific effect on me.
it is all music to my ears, beautiful
This is beautiful and Cantamus sounds great.
The suspensions are wonderful. I love this!
Thanks!
I love it!
I absolutely love this
I hope you are doing well mate. :)
The chromaticism and circle progression in the second system make this sound comforting in an elegant way. Bravo!
Glad to hear you feel that way!
I couldn't sleep so I put this on repeat. Thank you for this.
Glad to hear it helped haha. You are welcome!
Wow, i never knew an app could generate the consonants and vocals of any such words. So much better than Sibelius
I sightread your thumbnail and came right in... beautiful... as someone who has prayed for sleep, I truly appreciate the prayer!
Thank you! I hope your insomnia problems improve. :)
Very nice writing. Sounds very solemn.
For sure. 😄
Beautiful.
Love it
Beautiful voice leading ❤!
I love it, my new favorite

This is sick!
Beautiful!!
Woah woah woah!!!! That's incredible!!!! 🤌🏻✨
Amazing
So nice and useful! Thanks
You're welcome.
I will sing it with my choir, if you don't mind. I can do it myself but, could you share the partiture?@@Ivan_1791
For sure, send me a message to ivanmusic1791@gmail.com
Thank you so much for the interest!
This is gorgeous! I love some of those crunchy minor-seconds between the soprano and alto, I'm really tempted to make a recording of this. Stellar job!
With a recording you mean singing it with a choir? And glad to hear you enjoyed the dissonances I chose!
@@Ivan_1791Yes, or layering my voice.. mixing choral pieces is a big hobby of mine. The chromatic descents/ascents are also very pleasing to hear. Well done! 👏
@@coopiric5427 Sounds like a cool project! Let me know if you end up doing it.
PLS DO MORE LATIN CHANTS IM LOVING THEM
Thanks!
"Kyrie eleison" is actually ancient Greek and not Latin
This is very beautiful
Thanks!
i love it… a productive use of time! i usually find i have time to worship (pray, read bible, memorize scripture) when i can’t sleep
My tenor voice loves this! Good bless.
Glad to hear so!
So good.
time well spent!
Just brillant 👏
Wow, loved it, i felt insomnia. 👏
Beautiful - would love to hear it live 😊
I'm sure it will get performed. :)
this is a really cool composition, i’m gonna try and adapt it for the organ at my church.. i think it would sound good 👍🏾
Let me know if you want to get the score.
Keep returning for this. Waiting for the whole mass! When its out I want to sing it for Our Lord!*
I will try to make that happen before the year ends, but no promises for now haha.
@@Ivan_1791👀 *looks in fellow musician non judgement*
this was cool i liked this!
sounds very much like the beginning of the first kyrie eleison of bach's b minor mass.
True.
Very well done! Sounded authentic like 19th century religious vocal piece albeit short one :)
Understandable
I hope you can't sleep anymore that's so beautiful. Asides the joke, god bless you
Hahaha, thanks!
You've earned a sub!
Glad to hear so! 😁
The end got me 😭
Lovely use of the Neapolitan 6th in bar 20!
Precioso 👏🏻
Gracias.
Cool Kyrie, i like the fact that im able to sight read it (at least my register) i know it sounds stupid, but i suck at sight reading and it makes me glad :D
Glad to hear so, I tried to avoid weird melodic contours.
Suena muy bien, Ivan, me gusta! Cuidate!
Gracias! 😁 Retocaré algunas cosas, pero al menos la idea principal está hecha.
It’s so beautiful… perfect for a night after rehearsing Requiem
I had in mind composing a Requiem for my Opus 1. I hope I will be bale to start it next year.
@@Ivan_1791 Looking forward to it!!! 🫶🏻🫶🏻
Exellent 🎉
you made me cry 😢
Why? :/
Because it's too touching :Þ@@Ivan_1791
Very well
Calmly
This is kyriyeah! 👏🏻
Heaven
I want more
hope Kyrie recovers from injury soon frfr 🙏
Wow
wonderful dissonances
Thanks!
couldn't wait until a traditional parish begin using this Kyrie 🙏🏻
That would be pretty cool haha.
COOL
I like it! The only thing, maybe you could try vrying the different voices' rythms
Yes, I modified it a bit.
A thousand likes!
You should make a mass setting :D
I will. 😁
Apart from the key, the opening eight bars sound very reminiscent of the opening of the Bach B Minor!
I agree! Bach is like a father for composers.
Exactly the same thought I had. Just missing the quarter note runs
I quite love the Pergolesi feeling to this. Some trombones and oboes and strings under this would be really nice
I imagine so. My future Requiem will have a similar feeling in some sections.
Well, I'm the director of a chorus, so this could become something real sooner than later...
Yes, eventually. :)
King behaviour 💯
In all seriousness though, this is gorgeous
Thank you!
OMG WE HAVE THE SAME BDAY

I wouldn't call these harmonies "mindless" =D Well done !
I know haha. But when I started doing it I just went by my intuition and later I put some thought into it when I saw it was worth the effort.
@@Ivan_1791 Great intuition :)
@@anled.composition Thanks!
Very good job! If I may, probably a simple "Kyrie" for title would have been a better choice. Very nice composition.
Thanks! Only using "Kyrie Eleison"? Yes, that could have been an option. 😄
@@Ivan_1791 I say that just because the composition has the dignity of a prayer (regardless whether that was your main intent or not) and has actual musical value, so specifying "I did this just because I could not sleep and I didn't know what else to do" is somehow diminishing the stature of a quality work.
@@TheCellarGuardian Oh, I see what you mean now. That's true, but I wanted to be honest about the composing process I had. Either way sometimes when I'm sleep deprived I don't take things seriously and I flow so well with the music I end up doing better stuff than when I try to plan a serious piece.
But yes, I will probably change the title to "Kyrie" when I compose the rest of the mass.
Very nice melody and bass. Take a second look at some of your part writing/voice leading. Good work!
Thank you! What would you suggest me rewriting?
Nice Kyrie, would you make a Gloria in these molds? I assume it would be awesome!
Yes, I want to make the rest of the mass in a similar fashion.
I hope you get well soon! I’m also struggling with insomnia, and this helped me find some peace. May I ask how you recorded (or generated) the audio?
Thank you! I'm pretty much healed. I'm glad it helped you and I generated the audio with Cantamus.
Nice! Now you need to have a few more sleepless nights so you can do a Gloria, and a Credo, and . . .
True. 😂
Like this comment if you want him to write a full Missa Brevis now lol
Don't worry, I will do anyways. I hope I will do the whole thing in 2024.
Maybe I will even start composing a Requiem, which might be my first formal composition (Opus. 1).
The vocaloid is taking me out lmao
I really like this. Have you considered staggering some of the part entrances after first introducing the melody and harmony? Perhaps bars 5, 13, 19 and 21? I think it would add to the interest and complexity of your beautiful piece.
It's an interesting idea, like the piano pedal but with a choir. I wanted to make it accessible to solo singers though.
Glad to see Hatsune Miku finally devote her life to worshiping the lord
🙏🏻
WE UNLOCKING OUR DEVIL TRIGGER WITH THIS ONE🔥🔥🔥
Why? ._.
@@Ivan_1791 it reminds me of the score for Devils Never Cry
@@YungDoujin Oh, I never played that videogame, interesting haha.
@@Ivan_1791 I definitely recommend the original version if you'll listen to it which is the DMC3 one
This is neat. It sounds like an organ postlude. Nice resolution of dissonance. Very cool. Not sure I like it as a Kyrie tho
Thank you! I decided to use it as a kyrie because of the simple ABA' form.
the beginning reminds me of mendelssohn's organ sonata 1, the beginning in particular
Wow, I didn't know Mendelssohn composed some organ sonatas. Thank you for introducing me to them! They sound quite baroque indeed.
@@Ivan_1791 To me your Kyrie's beginning sounds essentially like Bach's BWV 232 Mass in B Kyrie
I agree, I copied it unconsciously.
