Joists - check, levelling - check, mortar pockets and let dry - noggings - floor. The new microphones are awesome! (tie a piece of string to the microphone and to a safety pin and pin it to your clothes, it's a microphone safety harness). This is so awesome to see!
Thank you Jean and I’m sure Ben had already said it in previous replies but thank you so much for going on the whole binge watch journey because that’s a lot of videos and waffling to get through 😂
Have you guys ever watched escape to rural France with Dan? He's building a chateau from just a shell he is a master at putting in floor joists. Great video, much love from Oklahoma USA Jackie 🇺🇸💖
Microphones working great. Your both doing a fantastic job. Hubby being a carpenter said work either end of one to make sure both level. Other variant is the measurement of wood and wether they are all same widths
Aww thank you. Glad the microphones are good, thank you. 😊 we will take your husbands levelling advice for when we have to do the living room joists, so thanks for that, very much appreciated 🙂
Ooh I dunno about that but thank you ❤️ They do give me nightmares sometimes, wondering if we did it all properly! 😂 I’m pretty sure we did but ya know the beginners doubt creeps in here and there!
The new microphones sound great. 😊 IMH non-professional-builder O, getting the joists you have in & stable before unleashing the chaos of the chimney breast seems like the better idea.
Sound is wonderful and I've really enjoyed the explanations and descriptions of what you've done! That's some hard work you've put in there! Congratulations!
🥳🥳 yay to the decent mics! Thank you. We like to explain a little because we know for us…when we’re looking for guidance on something we are about to do…explanations and descriptions are key to being able to do it ourselves and it would be nice if we help at least someone be able to get on and do what they are looking to do.
Just liked and subscribed there tonight. Use broken slate as packers for under the joists. Paint the end grain with creset or protium to protect it from moisture. Get herring bone straps to Barack the floor instead of weed noggins cheaper and u can run cables through the easier. Love this kind of work
Glad to have you following along 😊 The wood treatment we used…I think had protium in it…I will have to have a look and make sure. Joists levelled with broken slates 🙂 and then also packed with slates and lime. Thank you for all the tips though, very much appreciated.
@@thecornerhouseproject for the floor on top look at 8 x 2 ft flooring sheets and stagger them when fitting. Should be plenty of videos on it. Green side up and glue the joints with eurathane glue and screw them down with floor tight screws. 10 mm gap around the floor boards and the walls for expansion. And keep going you will make progress.
The sound is great! I laughed, because I’m never sure if the modern tools are the best…I would have done the same, used a spirit level then check with a laser, if I had on…hmmmm maybe I should for putting in cabinets in the mud/laundry room I’m finally getting to. Yep, you two inspired me to do some work myself. ❤️ Thanks!
Haha laser is good but we like you we’d never used it up until now! Ben bought it for my 50th birthday last year and now it’s had some use! Yay! I’m glad we inspired you…it’s so much more satisfying doing it yourself…more frustrating 🤣…but still more satisfying!
Excellent progress!!! A tedious process to level all the joists but your technique appears to work well. I think the approach of doing one side of the room at a time makes sense. I would apply the lime mortar before the "noggins" (here in Canada known as blocking). Sound on the video is good.
I did wonder how you were doing this and now see the light and the level and looking great. New mics added as on TV sounds clearer and can raise volume up if needed.
Thanks Pa! That’s good with the mics! Just need to stop Ben dropping them now lol. Can’t wait for the bedroom…might just be a kitchen bedroom to start with as we have to pull the ceiling panels down in the bedroom now for the electrician! 🫣 but it’s still a bed indoors…which is progress! Xxx
Excellent, the way you are level checking is optimal as you are focusing on the feel of the floor as you walk into the room. It is far better and more typical of heritage buildings to have the overall floor marginally sloping on same direction of joists in contrast to individual joists going up down. As the NHL lime takes weeks to become full strength always level with packing then noggins then OSB then lime. This prevents risk of any movements cracking or displacing the soft lime. The joists are held secure in pockets by the slate packing plus the noggings linking all the joists together. This leaves the lime to secure packing and to seal around the stonework. Also remember most heritage builds worked to a 1/8th accuracy or even less as there was vast variations in measuring tools. You also have the option if an individual joist is 1mm out and pocket difficult to adjust perfectly OK to run planer over joists to profile into alignment. Remember your joists are larger that what you have removed so that is the reason for basically starting from scratch on level. Once the other what 25 joists are done you will be able to trade your expertise across Ireland LOL.
Yes! This! I think once we resigned ourselves to the fact the floor is never going to be 100% level we just went with what the house is meant to be. Fingers crossed the living room is a bit more uniform in its construction! 😂 will most likely be investing in a decent planer just in case😉
Microphones 👌 you’ve probably already filled the pockets then put the noggins in by the time we’ve seen this so hope it all went well for you, it’s really coming on
The sound is fine. Shouldn't setting the joists in lime mortar be done first? It'll get them firmly fixed reducing the joists being knocked out of true when you're screwing the noggins in, because the noggins have to be as tight to the joists as you can make them.
We really wasn’t sure which way to go. We opted for noggins first because we needed to get the joists upright and packed before securing them in with lime. The floor seems to have kept its level, so fingers crossed it works out alright.
That guy who does Escape to Rural France he does the floor levels by himself, you seem to take a long time and it’s tricky, it’s seems easy for him he does it with a laser level, so who the f is right?
Haha not sure….it did take a while but it is our first time of doing it…so that probably slowed things down a little. He’s a master at it now with all the floors he has done now! 😂

Always working hard. So good to see the progress .
Thank you Jean and I’m sure Ben had already said it in previous replies but thank you so much for going on the whole binge watch journey because that’s a lot of videos and waffling to get through 😂
Microphones are good, nice and clear
That's good news Sharon. I think the sound will get better again. We are on our third microphones now lol.
Thank you :-)
Have you guys ever watched escape to rural France with Dan? He's building a chateau from just a shell he is a master at putting in floor joists. Great video, much love from Oklahoma USA Jackie 🇺🇸💖
Ooh yes we watch all of his videos! Thank you Jackie! 😘
There's been quite a few jokes and references to Dan's project in the previous videos.
Great work guys. You're getting there. The sound on the new microphones is perfect.
Yes, finally getting somewhere…it’s extremely exciting! Great, thanks for the feedback on the mics!🥳😊

Microphones sound good 👍 lovely and clear. Xx
Thanks Auntie Chris! Should stay good now 😊 xx
Hi, the sound is “spot on”. 😂 Great job.
Yay cheers! 🤛🥳
Better than professionals ❤
Ooh I dunno about that but thank you ❤️ They do give me nightmares sometimes, wondering if we did it all properly! 😂 I’m pretty sure we did but ya know the beginners doubt creeps in here and there!
Great progress!!
Thank you 😘
Great job guys, oooh, the joys of an indoor bed, eh.
Youll be like the Princess and the pea 😅😅
Thank you! Oh the joys eh?! One thing is for sure….doing this makes you appreciate the simplest of things haha!
@thecornerhouseproject don't 5alk about Ben like that lol. Great to see all your progress.
Hiya neighbours, looking good. Keep up the great work 👍
Hi neighbour! Thank you! 😊
The new microphones sound great. 😊 IMH non-professional-builder O, getting the joists you have in & stable before unleashing the chaos of the chimney breast seems like the better idea.
Haha yes we thought so too! Like the chaos description! 😂 that’s great with the mics, we very pleased 😀

Microphones sound good lovely and clear. Xx. Hi, the sound is “spot on”. Great job..
Good to know! Thank you! We like spot on! 🥳
Microphone sound good. Doing great work folks, 👍
Thank you! Yay finally with the mics!
Lime first to hold joists level, then noggins, then floor boards.
We packed the joists first to hold them, noggins and then lime lol. We shall see how that holds up lol. Level seems to be running good still so 🤞😊
Perfect sound now. Thsnk youso much. Now we can enjoy your videos more and more! 🥰
Yay! Thank you! 🥳

Yes, it was quite tedious…and then to realise that the floor was probably out of level before we started 🫣 thanks for the feedback on the mics too!
..the sound is great....👍😁
Yay! 🥳
I did wonder how you were doing this and now see the light and the level and looking great. New mics added as on TV sounds clearer and can raise volume up if needed.
Yeah we thought two levels was a good idea, first time using the laser one so wanted a little back up! Lol Pleased with the mic sound! 🥳
Fantastic work done .Brilliant sound Great how you are explaining what you are doing. Take care
Lovely thank you! 😊
new mics - great!
🥳 Thank you!
Going great guys, looking great.👍
Thank you 😊
Mics fine, muck the joist in I would say,😁 nice to see the progress you two are making, soon have a bedroom and man will you appreciate that xx❤
Xxx
@@thecornerhouseproject Oh yeah, things are never cut and dried are they, but never the less you are making good progress. xx
Sounds great, make safety harness for them as someone suggested so they don't fall off.
Thank you! Yes what a good idea eh? Just need some safety pins lol. Will have a look in my sewing kit!

The microphones are "bang on the line". Lol
Luckily we now how have some good microphones because the first ones we used weren’t the best 😂
Microphones 👌 you’ve probably already filled the pockets then put the noggins in by the time we’ve seen this so hope it all went well for you, it’s really coming on
🥳 with the mics! We are well on our way to being finished…not quite but sooo close!
use string or a long straight stud ............................or a laser
Laser and spirit level were our friends for that job!
🌟👏👍🍀💐
🥳👍🤛🍀✨
What's the difference between a joist and a girder? Joist wrote Ulysses and Girder wrote Faust.
😂
