Repairing and Restoring Our 200 Year Old Farm Building
Просмотров 19 тыс.День назад
Repairing and Restoring Our 200 Year Old Farm Building is taking a long time. Using traditional lime mortar to make the repairs and for repointing is only half of the job, removing the ivy a little bit at a time is the slow process. With stones overhanging, caution and safety is extremely important. We have just purchased some more NHL 3.5 Lime for the lime mortar, it is a different manufacture...

We Spent 3 Days At The Wrong House Renovation
Просмотров 19 тыс.Месяц назад
This derelict Irish cottage is in need of serious restoration and renovation, so we spent three day fitting wooden joists in one room. The only downside was it wasn't our house. It is estimated this vernacular house dates back to the late 1780s and it has many curious elements. Brick built walls which contain bricks of peat. Peat is used for burning, not for building a wall with and a roof tile...

This isn’t before exposing the beautiful red brick arch above the chimney breast. With Bens return, we get the temporary sheep’s wool insulation down in one of the bedrooms, extend the rafters and fit a breathable membrane ready for wood panelling to go back u...

It comes out sturdy, safe, appropriate and looking so good - and that cannot be easy. And you are still talking to each other!!!!! Way to go!

I do wish I'd watched this video at the time, a I could have given you some more useful & timely advice. My late Aunt was from North Dakota, so was familiar with how to keep cold out, & Irish conditions. When she & by late Uncle moved back to Ireland in retirement, they put batons on the reveals of the windows, & put the secondary insulation there, as if you just put it at the inner frame level, you are just backing up something you can fix with some putty, instead of back stopping the leaking around the entire frame, which is the big issue !

Outstanding work on the wall, removing that ivy wood like a real surgeon! It is truly amazing how much soil has been accumulating next to the house foundation. I wonder, when it was built, was the foundation visible? Thanks again for the episode!

It is actually very normal, that corners are a bit colder than the rest of the wall. Thats because you of the geometry - the outside surface of the wall is bigger than the inside surface - you loose more energy there. Sorry, my english isn´t very good, so I hope, that makes sence :)

Always amazes me at how much foundational work needs to be done when building or rebuilding. Getting rid of the damp is so important, good and hard at it, work Ben. The pair of you have such enjoyable and gentle voices, its easy to enjoy your videos. Your composition and editing of your videos is getting better and better. I still dont understand why they traditionally didnt have big eaves to keep the rain from the walls. Its a participary and satisfactory activity watching Dawn rebuiding the stone walls, and hacking down the ivy, believe it or not. You are in stride now with your own system. " Its raining a little bit, " while drinking tea on the scaffold, great moments of living your dream. Lovely drone shots, looks like you have a lot of places to take wonderful walks to.

I’m not sure if you know about or applied for a building grant for derelict houses from the Irish Government. If not, check out/contact the RUclips channel “ The Irish Homestead.”. They talked about it in the videos from earlier this year. You have a deadline and you have to provide the money upfront and get reimbursed once you’ve met the deadline. I think they got 75,000 pounds refunded.

Try damp sticks where you drill every 300mm and drill and insert damp sticks where they when they get wet/damp make a jell and stop the rising d amp I have done this on several damp walls and it seems to work.

The outbuilding wall is looking good, now comes the more difficult part. It must be frustrating to realize that the slope of the road allows water to flow right up against your outer walls. So good that the stones are drying out where you’ve exposed them. Do you plan to remove the cement render at some point?
