Hi Jan We see a lot of apple pies in our future too haha. The middle apple tree is great, a real majestic tree. We don't know but don't we have to wait until the end of the season until the tree is becoming dormant? Always open to input with the apple trees :-) Thank you as always Jan for watching and commenting :-)
@@thecornerhouseprojectuse this video as a reference to know which branches to cut down off your apple trees. Those apples could make a great a nice tart cider.
Hi David, thank you for joining us again. Although we will lose the view across the top of the walls when the roof goes back on, we are as excited too. It will give us a huge amount work space and storage space making more space in the house to work, but yes, a red roof, white lime washed walls, it will hopefully look lovely. Thank you again :-)
I believe that wall is going to be the best it's been in a long while. Puts a big smile on my face watching you tirelessly place each stone and the mortar to keep it for many, many years 😊 Superb Dawn 😊
Thank you Deb, I think you’re right I would imagine it’s been missing stones out of it for such a long long time. It’s a very satisfying job to do. Seeing a giant hole start to slowly get repaired and the hole disappear is a beautiful feeling. ❤️
Oh how we would love to be able to burn it but in Ireland you aren’t allowed to have fires outdoors. It’s a hefty fine if you’re caught doing it so that’s something we would like to avoid 😂
Love your Apple orchard, very envious. Dreaming of planting an Orchard. Any apple wood you fell, save it for smoking on the BBQ. One of the most versatile smoking woods, nice and subtle, not too overpowering. Like your style, getting distracted from an 'orrible job visiting the garden to have a little snack.
Hi Cori / Kayvan We can't really take any credit for the fruit trees or raspberry bush, we have just given them the TLC they needed. Ah yes, there should be quite a bit of apple wood by the time we have finished pruning / cutting off the dying or dead limbs. A nice apple wood smoked cheese is sounding great now you have put the idea in my head. Ah, you call them side quests, we call it procrastination, but we have to admit that "Side Quest" does sound a bit more productive than procrastination does. Thanks for watching and commenting :-)
Only you two could make watching paint being chipped enjoyable. Good job on rearranging the bedroom. It looks great. As for leaving the window lintel exposed you might watch My Tiny Estate. They plaster the walls with the wooden beams exposed, sometimes the beams are recessed in the plaster, but you might like the look of it.
Haha well there is certainly more of that to be done! Not sure you will be able to contain yourself 😉 we promise not to show it all though 😂 Yes, very pleased with the bedroom…obviously lots still to be done but for the time being it is fine ❤️ Funnily enough we did watch a couple of episodes of that channel a few days ago and saw the beams you mentioned, I really love that look and have kept that in mind for when we get to do our roof space properly.🥰
Try hiring a stump grinder to take out the tree root, they are very effective and not bothered by stones or other debris also will probably not be that much more expensive than petrol and chains for the chainsaw. If not I would advise burning but this will take longer.
I wouldn't blame you if you never want to see another root in your life Ben ... I admire your patience & persistence. Great job with the bedroom wall . You are great at pointing Dawn 👍✌️
Thank you Four Tails, the root is a love hate relationship. I hate it and it loves me hating it lol. The bedroom feels much nicer even in it's current state and the wall repairs are getting there. Thank you for watching and commenting :-)
Have you considered burning the root stump out? Put rocks around it in a ring and then start a fire on the top now you've cut the grooves in. Seen it done to get rid of tree stumps before 😊
Oh how we would love to be able to burn it but in Ireland you aren’t allowed to have fires outdoors. It’s a hefty fine if you’re caught doing it so that’s something we would like to avoid 😂
I think you could be right Tom haha. At the moment, the large stone in the middle is the only real pain in the bum, with that removed I should be able to saw pretty much through the middle, we will see. Thank you for watching and commenting :-)
Hi Saudilass, thank you for watching and commenting. I does feel a lot more cosy. Not a final look but much nicer than the blue. A decent ceiling in the future will make a big difference too lol. Thank you, 15k and counting, we are very lucky. Thank you again. Have a nice week :-)
Suggest when you take the dead apple wood branches off that you keep the wood and use it for smoking meat for a really delicious apple wood smoked meat. A really special flavor. Know you do not have time currently but bag up the wood and label it for special use. The stone restoration is looking great.
This sounds like a great idea. I have always fancied smoking some cheddar cheese. Funnily enough Eleanor we were both down there yesterday looking at the apple trees and deciding what needed to be cut off at the end of the season. Is there any particular way you would suggest cutting the wood, sizes etc and how to use it for the best? Thank you for watching and sharing a great idea with us :-)
Hi Kathleen, thank you for watching and commenting. You know what, I had forgotten all about our Silky Saw. That is something I haven't used on it yet. Thanks again :-)
You guys are making my little projects around the house seem a lot easier! I get motivated when I see you tackling these huge jobs a little bit at a time.
Hi Jane This is it, they are all little projects when done bit by bit. Just a little bit is something. And there is always tomorrow. We are pleased we get you motivated and thank you so much for watching and commenting :-)
Hi Ben the easiest way to get rid of that stump is a controlled burn drill a few holes and soak with petrol mixed with oil or fairy liquid to make it sticky, keep the burn under control, this will decrease the density of the stump and it will break apart easily.
Although burning isn't allowed in Ireland, if all else fails it may come to that. Thanks for the info with making it sticky that could prove very helpful. Thank you for watching and giving some good info.
drill a center hole 3/4 inch in root, cross drill a horizontal hole to connect. drop in some dry wood and light it will burn out the root like a Swedish fire log
I do hope the weather changes and you can be in your garden making it look lovely as I am sure you will do.its so amazing what you have done already.🎉😄🏕️
Hi Alison. We have just finished a two day stint of strimming and mowing as we had let it get too long to just mow. It is looking lovely again now. We finished just as the rains came today. Yesterday was the same but the water tanks are now full, which is always great for us. Thank you for watching and commenting Alison :-)
Good evening Neuton, how are you? A huge strimming and mowing session yesterday and today and it is looking good again. We really mustn't leave it that long again, it takes too long to get back under control. Yes you are right. We still have branches to cut off as the chainsaw has only just started being used but I am happy with using it now, so that will open things up even more. Thank you as always. Have a nice week :-)
I'm doing great thanks, been braving the cold wet Cape Town weather this time of year, everything growing faster than you can cut lol. It's a lot easier the shorter you keep it, it's a lot less wear and tear on yourself and the mower. It's also good to see you mix your chores, give one too much, the others get behind. Looking back at the what you started with, you guys are doing such a great job. Still enjoy watching everything you guys tackle. Don't forget to enjoy it, much love. ❤
Hi Ben and Dawn, soon you'll have too many reactions to answer. I can't imagine how much time it costs already. Better spend it on your home, or relax-time 😃 Love your videos, they are so calming, I think it is your voices. Thank you! 😊
Good afternoon Inge, thank you so much for watching and commenting :-) I am sure it will come to a point where we won't have enough time from one video to the next to answer each comment, but we will try to for as long as we can. When a video first gets released (4pm yesterday) we spend the rest of that day replying to comments until we go to bed. Then Dawn does a load of replies in the morning and then we just try to keep up with them as people comment. So a long time, but it is nice to be able to answer each one. We think we will miss replying to them when we have to many comments. Thank you for watching our videos and we are pleased you enjoy them.... and our voices haha.
You are both doing such a great job. We have watched all of your videos now and caught up. Loved watching when you got your cats ( we also have 3 cats all Maine Coons) so we understand the need to have them as family ❤️ Looking forward to seeing the end of moving all the dirt and revealing the 200 year courtyard. You have a hard job ahead shovelling muddy soil so we take our hats off to you both 👏 All the very best Yvonne & Graham in Australia 🇦🇺
Thank you very much and thank you also for going back and catching up to date with us!. Oh most definitely with the cats being family! They live a more privileged life than we do! Haha. Awww Maine coons! Stunning cat breed ❤️ We are both a little less enthusiastic about digging now that’s for sure! But it got the job done in the end. 😊
I am hoping that I can the stone out from the centre and then cut down from top to bottom where there is a hollow. Pure brute force may come into play very soon. Thank you for watching and commenting :-)
@@thecornerhouseprojectmaybe try a mini digger with a jackhammer attachment to break up the root without blunting tools, or hydrovac excavation which would expose the underground roots so you cut those with the chainsaw rather than attacking the root itself! Maybe try with a pressure washer and cheap water pump to empty the ditch first to see how effective that might be?
Thank you for taking me along. You are doing splendid work. My, how things are growing and producing this year. I wish you the best on "the rock." You are getting there, slowly and surely.
No problem at all bringing you along, it’s a pleasure 😊 It’s lovely to see everything start to thrive again after being buried beneath all the brambles and Ivy for so long. It seems terrible to wish your life away but I am looking forward to being able to prune things back and get things back to full health for next year and get much more planted and growing next year. The rock 🤨 hmm…yes one day it will be gone!
Oh he won’t let it beat him! 😂 Very pleased with how the bedroom is looking. It could be like that a while as it will no doubt be the last room to be done so for now at least it looks a bit prettier.
I've only watched one video ie; the year time lapse, however, I think what you're doing is wonderful and as an Irish native I wish you the very best going forward. I've just subscribed and look forward to watching more of your work. Good Luck!
Hi and thank you very much for watching and commenting, also a massive thanks for subscribing. It would have been a shame for this house to be lost to the elements in the end so we are over the moon it is ours and we can restore it as much as we can along with adding todays little luxuries like a kitchen, hot water and radiators., we are 66% there with that little list haha. There is still lots to be done both in and out so we will be bust for a little while yet. Thank you again :-)
@@thecornerhouseproject Hi and hey you're most welcome. I've seen loads of such houses like that throughout the country and I always think how sad to see them like that so I truly have the greatest respect and regard for what you guys are doing. It's literally watching a dream come true for you which is wonderful! 😊
Good to see your cracking on still guys not watched for a while as I lost my mum suddenly at only 55 so been really hard for me but with my good old mate si I’m getting back on track . Nice to see your still using the secret wave 😂 . I can still picture Ben coming down the road with he’s hand out the window lol
Awww 😢 we’re soo sad to hear about your mum, that must have been such a shock to you all at such a young age too! Our thoughts are with you ☹️ Simon is definitely one of the good ones isnt he? Very happy to hear that he was still England at the time for you ❤️ I’ve watched the last few days of the Pethericks just to see him 😊 love watching him and how natural and exactly himself that he is on there. I was just thinking as I was typing….Simon is on RUclips, we’re on RUclips…..that just leaves you to be appearing somewhere on RUclips 😉🤣 Haha yes we should call them Jamie’s secret wave! 👋 Thank you for popping on to watch and comment, especially with all that you have going on in your life right now. Take care and speak soon. X
@@thecornerhouseproject can you start a RUclips channel on just waving ? 👋 Simons is a good one yeah I learned a lot from him and it’s so good seeing him loving being on camera just looks so natural. Just wish he would stop here a bit longer as I have some jobs for him to help with .
Those stones that Dawn is looking for.. They are in the stump (teasing). The tree's are doing amazing and so is the ground cover lol. I'm so glad you are able to have company over and enjoy taking some time to yourselves. I love the original pink colour wash in the bedroom and the way you have it set up, one bite at a time it is all coming together. Love those smiles!!
🤣🤣🤣 oh my goodness you are probably right! 🤣 oh yes there is certainly a fair amount of ground cover everywhere. Today we have been tackling said ground cover! Life is slowly starting to resemble some kind of normal again and it does feel good to be able to take a bit of time here and there and not be super stressed about not working on the house. It actually looks alright doesn’t it? The pink wash. It’s a mix of a slight peachy orange as well in places and some white, it looks quite pretty.😍
Good morning Karen. Farm from finished but looks a lot better without the blue. I am sure with a ceiling it will improve ten fold lol. I am liking the idea of a stick of something, this week is it's final week though. Dawn is close to being ready to start that section and I don't want to be holding her up. It was a dream for us and now a reality and we feel very lucky :-)
Setting a goal and building your dream…It’s just lovely what you both are doing it takes patience, love and compassion.. Don’t forget some time out for yourselves too .
A slow process but the goal is set and the dream being lived day by day. It does take patience, we have lots of that and plenty of love for the house and surrounding buildings. We are having more downtime than we used to at the moment which is really nice, but although still July, winter will soon be knocking on the door so I think we will be busy getting things done before that comes. Bit by bit and slowly, but we will get there. Thank you so much for watching and commenting :-)
Good evening Carrie, thank you for watching and commenting. Oooh and hopefully a nice apple sauce too? How about an apple pie or 100? There are so many. Without looking it up, I don't really know what makes a crab apple a crab apple. Thank you again Carrie :-)
Hi guys maybe do like a rocket fire in the tree root it will get rid of the roots. Also great work getting done keep up the good work. Myself and my hubby did much the same on a shoestring budget, marketplace free cycle and charity shops. Good luck Ray and Ange ❤
Hi Angela, thank you for watching and commenting, and if you haven't already been thanked, thank you for subscribing too. Hopefully it won't come to a small smouldering fire but we will see how it goes. It is nice to meet someone else who has done the same on a shoestring. Sometimes we feel we only have a thread haha. Yes, marketplace, Donedeal, third and fourth hand is fine. Thank you again Angela :-)
Dear sir, with all due respect what you should be doing, is using wedges. Put the wedge in the outer most slit. This will work for both wood and stone. Hammer the wedge with the heaviest hammer you have. You should have a wedge at both sides and the middle. Hammer evenly. I watch every building show on RUclips I find. I am 70 and have watched this type of show since the 60's. I have also helped my father remodel many houses. In case you wanted references. Good luck.
Thanks Carl, nothing exciting this week, just what we have been doing, or some of it. The building will take a bit more time but it will be great when it is done. Thank you for watching and commenting :-)
I just want to say that you two are the loveliest of people, whatever work you get up to it’s your personalities that win me over! Thought you could do with volunteers to help with some jobs in exchange for food? ❤
Thank you very very much, what a lovely thing to say. Sometimes we don't know what we are doing so although it would be nice to have some volunteers to lend a hand, we wouldn't know what to ask them to do or direct them haha. We don't mind all the work as in years to come, as we do now actually, we can turn around and say "we did all this". Thank you so much again for your lovely comments :-)
You guys are doing a great job We decided to move to Ireland and bought a neglected small cottage 6 years ago and are still working on it nowhere near as big a project as yours but it feels good when another job is done Keep up the good work
Hi Diana It is nice having all the blue, modern paint removed now in the bedroom and finally some more sand arriving for Dawn and the outbuilding repairs. The root is driving me nuts. Thank you as always for watching and commenting :-)
That root is a monster but Ben is slowly winning! And that corner still scares me so I hope y’all wear hard hats in that area and please be careful. Gotta watch out for our favorite celebrities😎. The apple trees look great. All that hard work is really paying off. Y’all gave them a much better chance at producing Bit by bit, just keep your eye on the prize. “Gotta make it ugly before you can make it pretty”. Your RUclips friend from Florida, Just Nana🪨🪨🪨🌳🌳🌳
Good morning Not Just Nana, how was your week? This week is most definitely the week for the root, I think I said that last week. Yes, hard hats will be worn in that area as it doesn't look good does it. It doesn't seem to have dropped any more stones of late though so hopefully it will stay as it is until Dawn can start the repairs. Yep 100%, “Gotta make it ugly before you can make it pretty” :-) Have a lovely week Benda and of course thank you for watching and commenting :-)
Is there no way you could start a wee controlled fire underneath that stump? You'd need to watch it like a hawk but it might help break that stump up a bit for you and separate it from the stone. Well done with all that blue paint. You both did a smashing job. Big wave from Co Down....up the road North a bit, lol. Lee :)
Hi Lee At the moment that stone is suspended underneath the centre so not sure if a small burn would do it. I am hoping I can get this out and then chainsaw through the middle from the top down. Worst case will be a fire smouldering away at some point. The bedroom looks and feels a lot nicer for the blue paint gone. We did wave hello and also shout from the landing window with the light on but we don't think you heard us lol. Thank you for watching and commenting :-)
Great paint removal to lovely peach colour. Don't remove all the stump.< it is holding the corner of the building. I would leave it there and repair around it ( as long as it doesn't grow again).
Hi Jackie, thanks for watching and commenting today. The stump will only be cut down as much as possible as it is all about making room to be able to do the repairs to the building and to stop it from pushing against the wall. It won't be removed from the ground because as you say, it is probably holding the corner up or at least a section of the wall. The bedroom instantly looked warmer, now we just need a ceiling to actually make it warmer lol. Thank you again :-)
Hi guys, that particular shade of blue is very common in old Irish houses, I refer to it as Virgin Mary Blue and think it dates back to the 1954 Marian year back when Ireland was very religious and the colour was very popular. lots of statues and grottos were built then and that colour is a dominant feature. The blue is the same as Mary has on in the Holy pictures and statues. I doubt that they knew anything about breathable or non breathable paint back then (or about the sins of Portland cement), just thought that you might find this interesting, keep up the good work! Denis
Hi Denis, that is interesting thank you very much. It does make perfect sense because it really is spot on to the colour that Mary wears in the pictures and I’ve seen it on the walls of many other places in Ireland when I was looking for houses before we found this one. I would think also it was a welcome relief to put a paint on the walls that didn’t transfer dust to your clothing every time you got too close to it as well! 😂 I love learning little bits like this so thank you very much much Denis. 🥰
I think you could be right….but not sure about all the vibrations around the walls being so unstable. Annoying thing is we only need a small part of the root out to be able to repair that wall 🫣 xx
Crikey, I think I’d use that root as a barbecue! Dawn can build a Little Rock surrounds -would look great 👍 😅 Great work as always, that bedroom is fantastic with that ceiling. 😊 cheers!
Hahaha yes we probably could! Soo annoying that we can’t do fires in Ireland! We’re quite pleased with how the bedroom turned out. Not the finished article but at least it will look passable until we can get round to it properly 😊
I'm so late seeing this video! Ben, I really think you need to burn that root. It's been part of the stone for so long it may be mineralizing the wood. Drill some 1 inch holes, put in some paraffin and set it alight. Just do bits at a time. Everything around is stone, so you won't set the entire place on fire. Every bit the fire burns is less manpower on your part, and it will save your tools. Burning will also release the root where it's encroached into the joints of wall, which you would have trouble removing cleanly. It should cause less damage than trying to dig it out. Dawn, as always, is Brilliant. 😉 So excited to see your produce garden. For Year One - amazing! So very happy that more people are finding your wonderful channel. Those of us who've been around since the beginning love seeing the progress, the passion, and the editing improving (so great this week, Ben!) as Dawn & Ben have access to things like an indoor bed (and SHOWER!), a stove, and water. If you haven't you need to go back and watch the first few videos.
Oh we would love to be able to burn that root…but it’s illegal in Ireland to burn anything anymore. So as much s we would love to set fire to the bloody thing…we can’t ☹️ Well the produce might be small this year lol but next year will be much better. Can’t wait to get growing all sorts of delightful things! It’s been amazing this last few weeks with how much the channel has grown! Thank you for being one of the originals and for always being sooo supportive, helpful and generally a very nice person to have here. ❤️ we’ve definitely come a long way since the early days of showering outdoors! 🤣
@@thecornerhouseproject 😊I am so pleased the algorithm found you for me! I think if you just burn little bits at a time (not a huge fire) You might be okay. Or, maybe have a small barbeque in that location? 😉
Hi Roy It is pretty much 120 years old so not very old. The building out the back that Dawn is repairing at the moment is 250+ years old. We like to think the house was in a deep sleep, a very very deep sleep, so much so it couldn't smell the rotting timber hahaha. Out of interest, what country are you referring to? Our guess is Canada. Thank you Roy very much for watching and commenting.
You might consider using an electric hammer drill with a chisel bit on that stone laden stump so that you can worry less about hitting stone with the chain saw.
The stones are a real pain. The breaker was a considered option be with the root touching the most fragile part of the building, we decided against it in case it caused more damage to an already damaged section of wall on the inside. Thanks for watching and commenting :-)
Good evening Kathleen, thank you for always watching and commenting. it wasn't the most action packed video but sadly sometimes the boring things like paint scraping need to be done. The apple tree in the middle is incredible considering this time last year it was smothered in ivy with a couple of apples popping out the top. It was well worth the time looking after it. Progress is slow at the moment due to the bits and pieces that need doing but that should change soon. Thank you again. Have a nice week :-)
One of the aspects that I really like about what you are doing is your insistence on using natural materials like lime based products. This to me is the absolute ideal for old buildings! I wonder if you would mind doing a video about the materials you are using, for instance grade of lime, mixing ratios, application and cost and anything else you can think of?
It is quite important to us that we use the “right” material for the house, it has had some damp issues in the past and we think it is probably due to the cement and modern paints that were used over the years so to be able to remove those and replace with materials that will help the house perform the best that it can. We’ve done a couple of videos that mention ratios and the materials used but I’m not sure if I remember what those videos are now lol but I will be doing some lime work in the future so I will definitely try and remember to make a point of telling you those things. 😊
Hahaha I think it was! It is illegal to burn things outdoors in Ireland so unfortunately it isn’t something we’ve been able to try which is a shame as it would solve all our problems. 😔
Hey Guys - new subscriber watching from Australia. The time lapse episode popped up on my feed yesterday and I've been binge-watching your journey ever since. Loving the content and what an amazing old gem of a property. Watching her slowly give up her treasures makes me keep coming back. Thanks for sharing! Ooof ....that bloody Root! I'd set fire to the thing and let it burn for a couple of days. It might at the very least break the back of it.
Ben I must agree with you sir, the bed in the corner facing you as you open the door has that immediate WOW! factor (plus you can hide stuff behind it too) One step closer folks little by little. Stay safe, and we'll see you in the next week
We really like it in the corner like that it makes it look more like a nice bedroom instead of a storage area with a bed in it! 🤣 added bonus with getting to stash things! Thanks Scott, hope you have a good week ahead!
Ben and Dawn you have been busy getting that blue paint of the walls and not an easy task. Bed in the corner great idea to hide boxes also the bed looks good there also.Dawn you do not believe in wasting time with the rain.Getting your stone's sorted out on the wall .No time wasting with Dawn. It's amazing how fast the grass grows with all the rain and not great heat. It is beautiful to see all the apples. Some crop.Take care and God bless you both xx
Ooh yes us two! It’s quite a good feeling isn’t it? To grow some of your own food. It’s like wishing your life away but I can’t wait for next year to be able to really start growing stuff. It’s been a manic year this first one and the fun bits have alluded us so far. Animals and growing our own stuff is the dream but fingers crossed for next year. 🤞❤️❤️
That root will not beat you! I bet the stone Dawn needs is in that root. Blossom watch definitely produced a lot of fruit. Now, I want to thank you for the follow on Twitch! It was lovely to see your name there. Have a wonderful week, and I pray the rain lets up enough to get the mower out.
Good morning Dory, how has your week been? Hahaha, that is exactly what SweetOne said with where the stone will be. I wonder.... if I can get it out the root in one piece, maybe is could be a feature stone in the wall repairs haha. I was only thinking about blossom watch yesterday and looking at all the apples, how pleased I am that I stopped counting as I would have still been there now lol. You ae most welcome on Twitch. I still haven't got to watch you Live yet. Our schedule says 8pm GMT+1 but then the next day it says you were on at 2am GMT, so I think it gets mixed up. We did hear you seeing that we were following you :-) We had loads of rain yesterday, afternoon and through the night, but we managed to get out there to strim and mow, far from finished, but a good start. It got so long so fast :-( You have a great week too :-)
Yes it would be so lovely to have sash windows back in the house. We have a couple that we found in the outbuildings but not sure they are repairable but good to have as a template for what was in here, but yeah that’s quite a long way down the road yet.
Wow, Dawn and Ben! So much to comment on! The pointing is going great, love that you have the garden going and will soon have apples, tomatoes and squash, the bedroom looks lovely and cozy and that stump is just stumping! 😂😂😂. I don’t blame you at all for going in, Ben! Have a great week and we’ll see you next time. Bye bye!!
Haha yes, we’ve been doing lots of little things at the moment. So many things to do that all need doing, so we bounce from little thing to little thing at the moment lol I think Ben had his fill of trying to get through the root! 🥵 You have a great week too and see you next week 😊
The bedroom looks lovely in that pinkish color and wow look at all those apples and raspberries. Love the effort ye are putting in. But that root is something
Good evening Annie, how are you this week? Isn't it nice. It is a dusty pastel colour but a lot warmer than the harsh cold blue. It will really help the walls too as it was just holding in the moisture, just from breathing if nothing else. The apples are amazing considering it was only February we released it from it's ivy coffin. It was a great idea of Dawn's to keep the patch of what we now know are the raspberries. The main stems are from last year, so hopefully this time next year, once we have cut them down at the end of the season, will give lots of nice fresh ones. They are nice though. That root - enough said hahaha. Thank you as always Annie :-)
Try fire drill a hole in the center start a little fire in side the stump and make a hole at both top like a chimney 5 coal should do put little can around it if you want to keep it small
Hi Goblin King At the moment there is still a stone suspended underneath the centre. I am hoping I can get this out and then chainsaw through the middle from the top down. Worst case will be a fire smouldering away :-) Thanks for watching and commenting :-)
Hello Dawn and Ben. You are doing amazing work, you both have so much energy😊 your garden is beautiful and lucky for you on flat ground, ours is all on a steep gradient and so virtually unusable. I was wondering if you are going to have a pond ?they attract so much wildlife, we have frogs and newts. Also ive heard that if you hammer in copper nails it helps destroy the tree stumps😊 😊.😊
Hello 😊 thank you very much. Sometimes the energy is there….sometimes we hope it will materialise once we start! 😂 Yeah the land isn’t too bad…especially down the bottom end…completely flat. I can imagine it being difficult on a slope, good calf muscles though from scaling it all the time! Oh yes, a pond is definitely on the cards! We would love ducks at some point so a pond would be great! 😊 Yes we’ve heard something about copper as well so maybe that’s something to try. It’s so annoying because there’s really only a small portion that needs removing so we can fix the wall and the rest of the stump could just stay there if we can’t remove it. 😤
get yourself a larger Brummagem Screwdriver (Bigger Hammer) the one you have is to small , to extend your long bar you can slide a scaffolding pole over it giving you a pole length of 8 to 12 ft and hence a lot more leverage.
You could be on to something there My World, thank you. I am hoping to get the stone out somehow to then be able to cut through the middle, this could be the answer. Thanks for watching and commenting with a good idea :-)
All of the projects are coming along nicely! WOW the grass has grown, but it’s also so beautiful at the same time. That stump is so stubborn, and the hidden rocks inside are no fun, good luck and just keep chipping away at it! As always, it’s lovely to see you guys! 💚😊
Thank you and lovely to see you too 😊 Oh yes the grass has grown sooooo much! We’ve spent the last couple of days trying to tame it all again. It’s been few weeks since we did anything down there so it’s grown quite wild! ❤️🍀

Hi Nik Not yet but it may come to that. I "think" I have a plan. Now that I can clearly see the large stone in the centre, held up by the root above it, I am hoping I can break that free, which in turn will let me cut from front to back from the top. But, if all else fails, I will be joining you with the axe :-) Thanks for watching and commenting :-)
Hi It is on the "that would be nice" list but at the moment it is a couple of raised beds. They went in far too late this year really to produce much, we are hoping that next year we will be more prepared to start planting. One of our neighbours uses her polytunnel pretty much solely for tomatoes and they are lovely. Thanks for watching and commenting :-)
Loving how cosy your room is looking now. I really love the bed in the corner. That root is an absolute bear, I hope it isnt following into your dreams and giving you nightmares too. Good to see that you have more followers, you certainly deserve them
Thank you Tracy, Yes, really pleased with how a simple move of the bed and a bit of paint gone makes the world of difference. It isn't a palace but it is cosier now than it was. Oooh no, the root stays outside and well away from my nightmares, they are filled with a whole other realm of nasty bits haha. We are blown away by the number of subscribers and so quickly. We feel very lucky. Thank you for watching and commenting :-)
the bed in the corner is a great idea , congratulations on banishing the blue paint lol and that root wow , love watching your channel great videos great couple .
I can't take any credit to the being a good idea in the corner, it does look great though. The down side is I walk into things in the dark at the best of times, now I have to get used to where the bed is again. Don't mention the root MF, it is driving me mad. This week is the week (I think I said that last week) Thank you so much for watching and commenting :-)
Hello - thank you for the content today. I was outside working earlier but had to quit after an 1 1/2 due to my health, heat & humidity Heat index is currently 100F/38C. Don't over do it outside!
@@thecornerhouseproject Depends on what I'm doing outside but I'm used to it really - just had to work a little harder clearing out my beds around the house so I allotted my time. I grew up & live in Florida.
Hi Dawn and Ben. It's a pleasure to see you again, how good the bedroom turned out, despite all the work that remains to be done, it is already starting to look very cozy (the lights create a warm atmosphere). I see that many comments already suggest a bonfire for the root, I am not an expert but I think that the heat, the flames, could weaken the ancient mortar of the stone wall, and the underground roots could continue burning for days, not to mention that a large part of the adjacent wall (the one that faces the road) is largely attached to dry ivy, which could burn... In the previous chapter I left a tool suggestion for Ben, a “multi-material” drill bit. Today I also think that a demolition hammer with a flat chisel (for concrete) could work, applying incisions from the outside to the center. With the maximum security measures, of course. The stone wall is looking Wonderful, Dawn's dedication shows in each stone relocated. Bravo Bravisimo!!! It's impressive how well that little spatula handles. Incredible how trees revive!!! Ben as a little boy eating the berries hahaha.🤣😂🤣 I hope the apples come home and become a family recipe pie. . Thank you for everything you so kindly give us every week, congratulations on the growth of the channel. Bye bye, see you. 🍀🍀🍀
I just thought of the moving standard lamp as you where scraping off the paint, haven't see it for a while 😂😂😂 and as always when in doubt light a fire on the stump that will get rid of it ,and fun to watch too.
Hi Clive We had forgotten all about the light which moves around all on it's own. It is now in Lukas' bedroom, it was his really, we just "borrowed" it while he was in Canada last year. I have been tempted to many times just to set fire to it. I have it worried now though..... do I? Thank you as always Clive :-)
Hi Dawn and Ben, the bedroom does look so much better now you've won the battle with the blue paint. The wall is coming along nicely on the storage shed, looking forward to see that roof go back up, at the rate you are going Dawn, that will be up in no time :) All those apples! that will be a nice harvest to reward you for stripping all the ivy away hehe. Good luck with the stony stump, you do have your work cut out with that Ben, I reckon one of those huge stone cutting tools might be the only thing that might get through that job, not sure what it is called, but the kind of thing that Camper vibe are using on their cottage walls, if you follow them at all x
Hi Ellen, how are you? How’s your place coming along? Ahhh yes, the blue paint being gone has made it look much better. You don’t notice quite so much that it is two rooms made into one now! 😂 We can’t wait for that roof to go back on! It’s going to give us so much more space to be able to not have everything on top of each other all over the place. Oh my goodness yes…the apples are amazing! Soooo many of them! The one tree is crab apple so I need to see what can be done with them. Oh the stump is a frustration for sure and yes love camper vibe! Watched their video this evening so I think I know exactly the tool you mean…the big disc cutter that the builder was using to cut the patio door opening? X
@@thecornerhouseproject I'd like to say things are going great, but we have had a huge hiccup that has prevented our move going ahead for a while. Nigel has had to have a toe amputated. He can get about ok, but is unable to drive until the foot heals, but he is thinking of having our car controls switched to hand operated controls. Feels like the heavens are conspiring against us for the move right now, have hit a couple of low spots, but fingers crossed it won't be too long .... x
Hi Helen, thanks for watching and commenting. I "think" I have a plan. Now that I can clearly see the large stone in the centre, held up by the root above it, I am hoping I can break that free, which in turn will let me cut from front to back from the top. I did try horizontally and instantly uncovered a stone embedded in the wood, so that was the chain blunt again. We will see how the plan works though. If that doesn't work, it will be all angles, up, down, left right hahaha. Thank you again :-)
Yay the blues gone 😄 I've a tin of sky blue here if you want to re do it .🥴 Been trying to give it away since 1997 😇.. Walls looking great , I was wondering how you were going to do the corner . Its coming on well . hopefully have a roof on by winter. Have a great week .. cheers!
How much do you want for the paint? Hopefully it is vinyl silk so we can trap the moisture behind it again hahaha. Not sure if we will get a ceiling in our room by winter, you never know though Mitch, stranger things have happened. Thanks for joining us as always and for popping in in the week. Remember... No ladders or electrics haha

Hahaha, maybe you could get a really small donkey for your garden haha. The size of land is the reason we are here, not many garden are large enough to swing a cat, let alone house animals. Yes, it seems everything is happening on the channels this summer 2024 (if you can call it summer)
It is absolutely amazing, we can't believe it to be honest but thrilled. The plan this week is that the root will be gone - we will see. We are loving the idea of it being a feature. This may happen once enough has been removed so Dawn can get to the wall that needs the repairs. Thank you Barbara for always joining us and commenting :-)
Wow , it’s like a petrified root. You might have to blast it out, 🤣 (jk). You guys never stop amazing me with all you hard work. You’re like two little trains that keep chugging along the track. Great job!
Now is a good time to cut back the dead branches to send the energy to the rest of the tree. I see lots of apple pies in your future, lol
Hi Jan
We see a lot of apple pies in our future too haha. The middle apple tree is great, a real majestic tree.
We don't know but don't we have to wait until the end of the season until the tree is becoming dormant? Always open to input with the apple trees :-)
Thank you as always Jan for watching and commenting :-)
@@thecornerhouseprojectuse this video as a reference to know which branches to cut down off your apple trees. Those apples could make a great a nice tart cider.
I think Dawn is doing a super job of the pointing, I’m just as excited to see those cottages restored as much as the actual house.
I'm voting a controlled burn on that stubborn root! Progress is progress!
I mentioned that last week. The rocket stove model works well, usually.
Hi Cori / Kayvan
We can't really take any credit for the fruit trees or raspberry bush, we have just given them the TLC they needed.
Not sure you will be able to contain yourself 😉 we promise not to show it all though 😂 Yes, very pleased with the bedroom…obviously lots still to be done but for the time being it is fine ❤️
Funnily enough we did watch a couple of episodes of that channel a few days ago and saw the beams you mentioned, I really love that look and have kept that in mind for when we get to do our roof space properly.🥰
It’s a hefty fine if you’re caught doing it so that’s something we would like to avoid 😂
maybe a little TNT on the stump Ben 🙉 doing great guys
I think you could be right Tom haha.
At the moment, the large stone in the middle is the only real pain in the bum, with that removed I should be able to saw pretty much through the middle, we will see.
Thank you for watching and commenting :-)
😂 watching Ben patiently dealing with the stump ...I was thinking , God bless him , I would have set fire to it by now 😅
The bedroom wall looks so warm and cosy now they have the soft blue and not cold blue. Well deserved increase in subscribers too 👏
Hi Saudilass, thank you for watching and commenting.
Thank you for watching and sharing a great idea with us :-)
A saws-all will be perfect for that ! Those blades go through everything
Hi Kathleen, thank you for watching and commenting.
You know what, I had forgotten all about our Silky Saw. That is something I haven't used on it yet.

Thank you John, nope definitely not scared of a bit of hard work. It’s good for the soul!
You guys are making my little projects around the house seem a lot easier! I get motivated when I see you tackling these huge jobs a little bit at a time.
Hi Jane
This is it, they are all little projects when done bit by bit.
@@thecornerhouseproject yea I know I live in Ireland but it can be done as a small controlled burn lol
Love watching your progress, every week you make you home a little bit better and little more loved.
Thank you Lynn, that means so much to us that you can see that. ❤️ we do love this place and we hope that it shows. ❤️
drill a center hole 3/4 inch in root, cross drill a horizontal hole to connect. drop in some dry wood and light it will burn out the root like a Swedish fire log
Great to see how the garden is going, it's looking really good. It's something that's going to look very different every year.👍
Good evening Neuton, how are you?
Thank you! 😊
Good afternoon Inge, thank you so much for watching and commenting :-)
I am sure it will come to a point where we won't have enough time from one video to the next to answer each comment, but we will try to for as long as we can.
That root is PETRIFIED!! 😮😂
By the way, just how old is the house & outbuilding??!!
Oh most definitely with the cats being family! They live a more privileged life than we do! Haha. Awww Maine coons! Stunning cat breed ❤️
We are both a little less enthusiastic about digging now that’s for sure! But it got the job done in the end. 😊
@thecornerhouseproject
Hello again from our Cats In Australia 🇦🇺 to your cats in Ireland 🇮🇪 😀
I have remove several logs on my property. I used a wood splitter. For more difficult stumps, use a metal wedge and the blunt end of a wood splitter.
I am hoping that I can the stone out from the centre and then cut down from top to bottom where there is a hollow. Pure brute force may come into play very soon.
Thank you for watching and commenting :-)
Hi Ben and Dawn. Good to see you are still smiling despite the stubborn stump. XX
Hi Carol 😊 Yep it’s a more a grimace smile here and there when we see just how much of it there is left! 🫣 One day it will be gone! Xx
Always smiling Carol, you know us :-)
Hope you are well.
@@thecornerhouseproject I hope you mean the stump and not your smile.XX
You might try burning the stump.
@@thecornerhouseprojectmaybe try a mini digger with a jackhammer attachment to break up the root without blunting tools, or hydrovac excavation which would expose the underground roots so you cut those with the chainsaw rather than attacking the root itself! Maybe try with a pressure washer and cheap water pump to empty the ditch first to see how effective that might be?
that apple tree is happily liberated from the ivy. saying thank you !
Aww yes it really is! It was lovely to be able to finally see the apple trees and not the huge mound of Ivy they had become!
Tree root, frill holes, fill with petrol, light it ;)
Just like that haha. Bonfires are actually illegal in Ireland Biff, but it may come to this.
Thanks for commenting mate :-)
Thank you for taking me along. You are doing splendid work. My, how things are growing and producing this year. I wish you the best on "the rock." You are getting there, slowly and surely.
No problem at all bringing you along, it’s a pleasure 😊 It’s lovely to see everything start to thrive again after being buried beneath all the brambles and Ivy for so long. It seems terrible to wish your life away but I am looking forward to being able to prune things back and get things back to full health for next year and get much more planted and growing next year.
The rock 🤨 hmm…yes one day it will be gone!
The bedroom looks fab! That root demolition is so wild. You are determined!

You know the missing stones could be in that tree! What a thought! Love it....
What a huge transformation, looks grand, and snug also. May need a stick of something to move that stump. Dream,s and goals keep us going Dawn. 😍
The algorithm got it right this week. Finally!! ;) Thanks for bringing us with.
Yay! 🥳 No problem at all thanks for coming long 😉❤️
Setting a goal and building your dream…It’s just lovely what you both are doing it takes patience, love and compassion..

Good luck.
Another great video both 👏👏👍looking forward to seeing the brickwork completed on the outhouse your doing a cracking job of it 👏👏👍

That root is a monster but Ben is slowly winning! And that corner still scares me so I hope y’all wear hard hats in that area and please be careful. Gotta watch out for our favorite celebrities😎.
Yep 100%, “Gotta make it ugly before you can make it pretty” :-)
Have a lovely week Benda and of course thank you for watching and commenting :-)
My hat off to you on such an amazing task you have done hard work yet worth it
Is there no way you could start a wee controlled fire underneath that stump? You'd need to watch it like a hawk but it might help break that stump up a bit for you and separate it from the stone. Well done with all that blue paint. You both did a smashing job. Big wave from Co Down....up the road North a bit, lol. Lee :)
Hi Lee
At the moment that stone is suspended underneath the centre so not sure if a small burn would do it.
Time me thinks to bring out the big guns, the jack hammer, a big beefy one lol, Love and blessings as always from Scotland xx
I think you could be right….but not sure about all the vibrations around the walls being so unstable. Annoying thing is we only need a small part of the root out to be able to repair that wall 🫣 xx
@@thecornerhouseproject Maybe Dawn can work her magic in stabilising that corner of the wall, it's a thought, I wish you luck xx
The apple tree must be so happy to be free of the ivy.
Oh they really are thankful, the one tree in the middle has produced so much fruit this year so far.
Looking good !
Thank you 🤩
So much to do
Can't wait to see the house getting done
Oh yes so much to do. 🫣 I would think in the next coming weeks we will be doing a lot more on the house. 😊
Crikey, I think I’d use that root as a barbecue! Dawn can build a Little Rock surrounds -would look great 👍 😅
Great work as always, that bedroom is fantastic with that ceiling.
How old is that house. That house is probably older than my country. You vision is amazing to be able to bring that house back from the dead.
Hi Roy
It is pretty much 120 years old so not very old.
@@thecornerhouseproject the US 1776-2024= 248 years old
@@RoyCoffee-w5b We were close with Canada lol. Well a couple of years, we won't fall out over it haha.
Thanks for the reply Roy.
@@thecornerhouseproject I just asked Google AI and it said Canada is 157 years old, so that is about the same age, you were right there. Gold star🌟
Look at me, top of the class. The first time ever haha.
Love seeing the apple tress etc. you two are always busy and the progress you make shows.
@@thecornerhouseproject No doubt the cement products are the source of the damp. Doing a great job 💪🏿
You have yet to have a pop at burning it out! I think that cow was cheering you on there for a bit!:)
Ben I must agree with you sir, the bed in the corner facing you as you open the door has that immediate WOW! factor (plus you can hide stuff behind it too)
One step closer folks little by little.
I love that your homestead is producing food. ❤❤❤❤❤ Enjoy the literal " fruits" of you many many labors. 😊
@thecornerhouseproject You will get there. You've made sooo much progress already.
We did hear you seeing that we were following you :-)
We had loads of rain yesterday, afternoon and through the night, but we managed to get out there to strim and mow, far from finished, but a good start. It got so long so fast :-(
You have a great week too :-)
Well done! Looking so much better. Probably have to save up for the sash windows, It's what we're going to do for our cottage
Yes it would be so lovely to have sash windows back in the house. We have a couple that we found in the outbuildings but not sure they are repairable but good to have as a template for what was in here, but yeah that’s quite a long way down the road yet.
Well done 👏
Thank you 🤩
Wow, Dawn and Ben!
So many things to do that all need doing, so we bounce from little thing to little thing at the moment lol
I think Ben had his fill of trying to get through the root! 🥵
You have a great week too and see you next week 😊
Keep the updates coming. It really is starting to look great, also congrats on the new peeps following you lot too. you deserve it.
Aww thanks David 😊 I know, how cool is that with the numbers?! It’s gone crazy! 🤪 Hope you’re doing well? X
Ben. that stump needs a rotary hammer drill and expansive demolition grout. It will be broken to pieces in 24 hours. Brand names: dexpan or dynacem
Lovely thank you for that will have a look into it 😊
Try fire drill a hole in the center start a little fire in side the stump and make a hole at both top like a chimney 5 coal should do put little can around it if you want to keep it small
Hi Goblin King
At the moment there is still a stone suspended underneath the centre. I am hoping I can get this out and then chainsaw through the middle from the top down. Worst case will be a fire smouldering away :-)
Thanks for watching and commenting :-)
Absolutely awesome seeing the progress. Have a great week 😊
Thank you very much Louise. You have a nice week too.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :-)
Yes we’ve heard something about copper as well so maybe that’s something to try. It’s so annoying because there’s really only a small portion that needs removing so we can fix the wall and the rest of the stump could just stay there if we can’t remove it. 😤
@@thecornerhouseproject yes, a pond would look beautiful. You've certainly got enough lovely rocks to go around it..
Dawn is such a beautiful lady...😍
🤭 Thank you 😊
get yourself a larger Brummagem Screwdriver (Bigger Hammer) the one you have is to small , to extend your long bar you can slide a scaffolding pole over it giving you a pole length of 8 to 12 ft and hence a lot more leverage.

Have you tried setting the stump on fire? 🤣 It takes sooo long to get some roots out. I used a hatchet on mine in the end and just hacked away.
Hi Nik
Not yet but it may come to that. I "think" I have a plan. Now that I can clearly see the large stone in the centre, held up by the root above it, I am hoping I can break that free, which in turn will let me cut from front to back from the top.
But, if all else fails, I will be joining you with the axe :-)

Polytunnel for the tomatoes in Ireland. Great work though.
Hi
It is on the "that would be nice" list but at the moment it is a couple of raised beds.
Good to see that you have more followers, you certainly deserve them
Thank you Tracy,
Yes, really pleased with how a simple move of the bed and a bit of paint gone makes the world of difference.
Have you tried to burn the root? It will shrink the size and perhaps make it easier. We removed 3 roots that size using chainsaw and fire!
the bed in the corner is a great idea , congratulations on banishing the blue paint lol and that root wow , love watching your channel great videos great couple .
I can't take any credit to the being a good idea in the corner, it does look great though. The down side is I walk into things in the dark at the best of times, now I have to get used to where the bed is again.

Hello - thank you for the content today. I was outside working earlier but had to quit after an 1 1/2 due to my health, heat & humidity Heat index is currently 100F/38C. Don't over do it outside!
Wow, I would not be able to work out in the heat like that! 🥵 I’m not surprised you had to come in. I would be overheating at anything above 22C! 😂
Ben as a little boy eating the berries hahaha.🤣😂🤣
I hope the apples come home and become a family recipe pie.

Hi Clive
We had forgotten all about the light which moves around all on it's own. It is now in Lukas' bedroom, it was his really, we just "borrowed" it while he was in Canada last year.
I have been tempted to many times just to set fire to it. I have it worried now though..... do I?
Thank you as always Clive :-)
Yep, a couple of bags of charcoal on the stump, & leave it smolder
hi dawn and ben sorry im late
It isn't a problem Alan, you made it, that is what counts.
How are you this week?
Feels like the heavens are conspiring against us for the move right now, have hit a couple of low spots, but fingers crossed it won't be too long .... x
Maybe you should have asked around for a masonry saw for cutting that tree root.
Hi Ben, have you thought about cutting horizontally and diagonally through the stump cuts that you have already done.
