You made an interesting point about "not aging well" Dave, and I think if people keep this in mind when playing older games, it's easier to adjust your perspective and accustom yourself to them: If the game you're playing released in a certain year, pretend it is that year. Go back in time, mentally, to the year of a game's release. Don't think about the constraints or limitations of old games and compare them to today's games. Instead, think about the freedom you're given when exploring these game worlds, and how you are engrossing yourself into something totally new and unexplored during that year. Especially if it's a Playstation game when 3D was just learning to stand on two feet. Think about all the lengths developers had to go through to get all that information on a cartridge or disc, and all the special effects that accompany them. I think when you approach older games in that manner, they're so much easier to enjoy. You have to *want* to work with the tools you're given with.

If you look at the instruction manual for the original, all of the main characters have a picture next to their descriptions, except him. I loved that! The only way you learned about him was through playing the game. I agree that in the remake it I feels like there was too much, too early. However, every man and his dog knows who Sephiroth is and what he looks like these days. I feel like trying to recapture that mystery in 2020 would have been very difficult.

On the other hand, as much as I love the original storyline and have played through it countless times, I would have been a little disappointed if the story was the exact same. I'm glad they made some changes, but I'm not fully convinced that the direction they're taking it in is a good one. I suppose the sequels will answer that question.
"How is Aerith gonna be killed when she kicked Sephiroth's ass in part 1?" Easy : Sephiroth gonna try to kill Aerith, Aerith kicked his ass again.. and when you thought Aerith gonna survive in this remake, the Whisper gonna appear out of nowhere and kill Aerith (Because you can't change fate).
Ugh... I'm so not ready. 31:20 you can get Aqualung from Chimera in the Gold Saucer desert with Manipulate materia (need to have access to a car IIRC). 49:00 disagree. In the original game Tifa was withholding info from Cloud but it didn't feel like care (that it was supposed to be) more like neglect. Like she was always holding Cloud down for nobody but herself not even realising how strong he felt about her. Felt like a friend-zone without actual friendship. around 1:40:00 they can introduce Yuffie earlier making her steal your materia offscreen (without revealing her as a perpetrator) and the problem you have with overstock of high-level materia is solved somewhat canonically without the need of robbing player off their progress from part 1. 1:45:25 Zack is shown at the last moments of his life, not alive per se. He'll never get past those moments. Confusing thing is how they showing him. It's like past and present are crossing paths at the same place which might or might not be felt by certain characters. It's no one's flashback at this point.
I hear ya on reviewing new games. That's why I stick to review retro games, I don't have to worry about being ahead of the curve or first. I just play games from the past that I love or missed and try to give people enough incentive to try em out for themselves 😁

My first RPG experience was Dragon Warrior (NES). I attempted FF1 on the NES and didn't get very far. I picked 4 fighters as my party and ground until I got discouraged. I watched my friend play FF7. I was loyal to Nintendo and owned their consoles exclusively. I was upset that Square went to Sony.
I watched many many reviews of FFVII Remake and most of them from youtubers I respect and watch for years. You are completely new to me and I watched your complete 2 hours thoughts of the game. The only thing I do not feel the same as you about is Jessie. I personally like her original self more but in every other point I absolutely agree with you. Thank you for sharing your personal and emotional honest view.
Have you beaten Xenogears on PS1? It's my fav JRPG of all time, I'm going to try Chrono Cross finally now that you've recommended it once I get my PS1Digital setup. Also I feel the same about MMORPGs. Diablo 2 consumed years of my life and I swore never again. FF15 is when I got back in too and it made me realize how much I missed Final Fantasy and JRPGs. Now I can’t get enough and have even started 12 and 13.
On the topic of uncommon opinions (preferring Crono Cross to Trigger, FF6 is "OK"), I've always thought FF7 was just "fine". FF7R did more for me in helping me appreciate the original's story than replaying the original several times over the years. I like where they're going with this. I like the idea of a Sephiroth from a parallel world that has somehow become aware of his future and aims to change it. Very interesting, I think.
Have you played Blue Dragon? I am currently playing it. I'd say it's a highly underrated turn-based RPG. Somewhat a combination of FF and Dragon Quest.
If I recall correctly, the gryphon creature outside of Corel Prison can give it to you, too (but before Gongaga). So you can get it well before you fight Jenova.
Pixel Phoenix yeah the Harpy. You can’t fight it late game though. The only way to get Aqualung on all 4 Enemy Skill materias is through the Sunken Gelnika
I agree on Aerith not being relatable, and I think that is by design. She knows more than the audience (as you mentioned), I feel like she's Gandalfx10 in this, and she feels that burden. I feel like the whole crisis with time and the realities that might cease to be rests on her shoulders.
Was gonna argue with you about RPGs on SNES compared to PS1 but realized I'm just older than you.. But still, Chrono trigger is the shit and FF 6 is the best FF for me because it's my 1st FF game that I was engaged in.
Hard to go back to a RPG that already played a lot and stopped playing. Not impossible though. I stopped playing FF8 at the last boss and FF9 at the end of the 3rd disc of 4. I later went back a few years later and beat them both.
I feel that the way the turned based was originally designed was to make you wait in anticipation. Especially if you were in a tough fight, it made it very suspenseful. Because you would be waiting like cmon hurry, hurry up ! I need to make a choice fast before I die. I get it with the whole action rpg why wait ? when you can do things while waiting right ? I think that was squarenix way of spicing things up and making it appear more fancy in this new age of gaming. I think FF7 remake was a great game aside from the fetch quests which I absolutely hated with a passion. Its funny because FF7R had just a few here and there, but when you look at FF15 you realize that that was whole foundation of that game fetch quests. Ff7R handled the fetch quests a whole lot better.

Ff 14 is an mmo there I just ruined your life lol . I am sure it won't be that bad . Have fun . It would be sweet if they added VR support for Ff games. I know that they have that fishing one but that doesn't cut it.

The bad part is that it changed which ff7 we will get from here on out. Its a reimagining not a remake.

I know i'm late to the party, but dirge of cerberus has alot of rpg elements. I think you would enjoy it.

Aqualung is not a missable Enemyskill. Other monsters before Jenova have it.
You can obtain Aqualung at the end of the game within the Sunken Ship.
The only permanently missable Enemy Skills are Trine and Pandora’s Box.

I had the exact opposite reaction to Aerith I liked her way more in remake than the original I couldn't stand her.
Aerith's parts were a delight. Liked her a lot more in this one than Tifa even though she is also every bit as awesome
