This, Dominion Tank Police, Bubblegum Crisis, Robotech, Zillion, Mobile Suit Gundam, Patlabor, Ghost in The Shell.... (Seriously, if you haven't seen any of these anime series, check them all out!)
GameDave knocking it out of the park with this review. Love this type of content. Had me laughing so many times! I'll be honest, it takes some good writing to get me to watch an entire review of an 8-bit game I've never heard of and will most likely never play. He really knows how to pace these videos so the viewer doesn't get bored. That's a skill a lot of other reviewers haven't mastered. Glad this channel is putting these types of videos out again!
Interesting how similar it looks to the Hori Commander for the PC Engine. Guess the company must’ve had a generic shell they liked using during that gaming generation?
Crazy how much in price a boxed copy of layla goes for now.I remember buying it in the last decade cib at a cheap price. The reason i bought it as stated in the video it's cover art reminding me of dirty pair. One of my favorite series from the 80's to. There's another video game that is similar to the likes of dirty pair. That being, trouble shooter for the sega genesis and it's sequel battle mania II.
Oh man, I better watch this video cause the "Hey watch the video" tornado just entered my office. This looks like a title I might need to add to my famicom collection.
There’s nothing quite as satisfying as bragging to your friends about that high score on a game they never heard of. Aside from loosing that quarantine weight of coarse lol
God I LOVE this series! The Famicom is one of my favorite systems to collect for and I absolutely LOVE learning about new Famicom games that are actually fun to play that I've never tried before. It gets me inspired & gives me a new game to try to acquire. Keep em comin' man! & hell, don't be afraid to do the same for other retro systems too!
I don't know if I ever left a comment on this video, but it's one of my favorite game review up there with the AVGN's Bugs Bunny and Jason 13th reviews. I always come back for more maAaze action review ! 😆
I fucking love this game! Literally the first import I ever bought. I do, however, think they missed an opportunity to allow co-op play. This game would’ve been perfect for two players-just slap another score, ammo count, and life meter up at the top and make Iris a playable character!!
Pretty random, but I coulda sworn that that 'oh yeah' voice in the background was Voultar and now I want a Game Dave ft. Voultar episode. They could probably talk about anything.
Citizenship outside the Box no way that’s crazy! Just like over here wrestling games aren’t worth anything, can’t even really give them away, yet I see they are blowing up in the US!
Layla... the resale price will have you on your knees. By the way, I absolutely *loved* the Dirty Pair. Enough love to know that there's a backstory in Dirty Pair Flash in which one of the former "Lovely Angels" was named Iris, just like in this game.
The sad truth is that this game is BETTER than the OFFICIAL DP game released for the Famicom disk system. I just got done watching a video of a play-through of the DP game and it's sad. That's the most charitable way to put it! They didn't have many good tie-in games until the 16-bit consoles. There was still mostly shovelware based on anime but there were a few good anime/manga based games like Macross: Scramble Valkyrie, Area 88/UN Squadron, and even one semi-decent Ranma 1/2 fighting game, commonly referred to as Ranma 1/2 Super Battle. There hasn't been a DP game made since the Famicom title. A shame... someone could do a really good Metal Slug game based on Dirty Pair that would just destroy the Famicom game.
Looks like someone made Layla: The Iris Missions for NES over on romhacking dot net which is an overhaul of the game, sounds more challenging but still very cool!
Game Dave (if that's *really* your name (doubtful)): Your days of cornering the Layla market are OVER. Just like with King Kong 2 - there's a new sheriff in town. 🤠😤💪 I can't believe you thought you could get away with it...... 🤦♀️ (p.s. nice vid)
Makes me think of Section Z, or maybe Trojan. Same sort of early-Famicom, minimalist look and needlessly simple music. _Dirty Pair: Project Eden_ was the first anime I ever saw in Japanese. Too early for subtitles. I had brokered a deal with some shady guys at a local convention, who sold me copies of some of their collection.
Oh, Layla - the game that brought me back into retrogaming and also my debut as a contributor for Hardcore Gaming 101. Not the best game inspired by Dirty Pair, but way better than the official licensed one for the FDS. Why do many games that shamelessly rip off famous IPs are better than official ones? Like Contra is the ultimate game starring Arnie/Sly and freakin' Aliens yet the licensed NES games of movies like Predator, Alien or Rambo are atrocious. About the lack of co-op yet featuring two characters, yeah, just like Battle Mania for Mega Drive, this game should have had this feature since it's starring two characters. And that tornado - anyone who I know and played this game (including myself) was at least once owned by it :D it's kinda like that 10-ton weigh in TG16 Darkwing Duck that made AVGN explode in a fit of anger. Oh boy, the Nerd would have a field day with Layla I guess :D
Was it you who reviewed Banana Prince for the Famicom? If not, I HIGHLY suggest you look into that one. It's actually quite good, with excellent graphics, animation and music. It was a late title for the Famicom and it shows.
Honestly, I'd really love to discover more MetroidVania style games for the NES/Famicom as those are some of my favorite games to play. Any game that allows you to learn or discover new equipment and abilities as you explore which in turn allows you to access new areas you couldn't before. I LOVE that style of game & wish they had done more of it back in the Famicom days. Sadly that concept was kind of undiscovered way back then, although you had bits & pieces of it with games like Blaster Master, which is a great game that could have been absolutely fantastic had the MetriodVania nature of the game been a bit deeper, with more than just weapon top offs to find in those top down explorable rooms you can find.
I mean, for all (or at least most) intents and purposes Zelda 2: Adventure of Link is pretty much a Metroidvania. --Progression gated on finding items and abilities in the world --Sprawling maze-like structure --Sidescrolling action combat --A certain degree of freedom in regards to the order you do things in Soooo.
@@guerillagrueplays6301 Right, I am aware. It is one of the most well known games on the system. That's just one game though. Am hoping to learn about those that everyone and their brother hasn't heard of already.
This one definitely doesn't warrant the price it commands but it does some pretty neat stuff for '86. The ending makes me think the developers expected to have a massive success on their hands.
What'll you do when you get lonely And nobody's waiting by your side? You've been running and hiding much too long You know it's just your foolish pride

Are they limited however?
This, Dominion Tank Police, Bubblegum Crisis, Robotech, Zillion, Mobile Suit Gundam, Patlabor, Ghost in The Shell.... (Seriously, if you haven't seen any of these anime series, check them all out!)
you lost any credibility when you said gundam. theres never been a good gundam game, even though all they had to do was copy armored core.
@@FingerinUrDaughter But GitS have non either. Besides Gundam have the series of superdeformed spinoffs that was alright and fun^^
This what, Layla? Not an anime bruh

Anyone else get the impression the whole point of this video was so Dave could show off his Famicom turbo controller :)
HEY! Stop trying to figure me out...
lol
Interesting how similar it looks to the Hori Commander for the PC Engine.
Guess the company must’ve had a generic shell they liked using during that gaming generation?
Big deal, we in Russia had for Dendy turbo buttons AND normal buttons.
You got me with that turbo controller editing. Outstanding
sound effects were so good
dirty pair is my all time fav anime
I just wanted to pop in and say how much I love these Famicorner vids. This one had me chuckling. Great job and the editing was so fun.
I am a big fan of the 1980's Dirty Pair. They had books, movies, TV show, OVA and a video game to there credit lol.
As an actual idiot, I can spot a pretender a mile away... I'm onto you, Game Dave...
Man, haven't seen your videos in a while. Forgot how funny you were and how interesting your videos are. Thanks for the content, Dave!

Oh man, just played this for the first time last month - was going to do a review on it myself, but couldn't make it past Level 3 😆
Outstanding and hilarious video! Thank you!
No, thank you!
This is the most cinematic game review I ever saw, congratulations! Great work!
I like how your videos aren't just straight up reviews and you describe the experience so well.
this type of video is my fav content of yours, dave!
You are the best man, I love all your videos and you have quite the talent my friend!!
Oh man, I still have my copy from when I was a kid. This game holds up so well!
I actually did know about this one, but not Iris Missions. Thanks. I'm always on the lookout for quality ROM hacks.

Thumbs up because GameDave is some sweet, sweet morsel 🤣🤣🤣
Don’t fill up on my sweets.
A game so great Eric Clapton wrote a song about it.
This is quite an underrated Famicom game... and *way* better than the licensed *_Dirty Pair_* game.
I wish this one could receive a Super Famicom sequel, but dB-SOFT ceased making games in 1990 and went out of business completely in 2003.
yeah that boss music is gonna drive someone insane after a minute.
Famicorner IV life!
Thank you so much for making me laugh today
The disembodied voice: wow
me: wow too
I'm listening to the Boss Theme, and it's quite... haunting. Like the Haunting Torgo Theme.
These are well made videos dude
So glad to see you back in the Digital Saddle, man. Waiting on Sept. 18th for that Mario 3D good good so I can get digitally distracted.

I remember the anime to this. Never knew it had any games!
Dirty Pair has a game for the Disk System but... it's not good, to say the least.

I remember that flick by Wicked Fims...Dirty Pair. Great film " 2 things up"
Layla is one of my absolute favorite games

Do you capture this game footage on original hardware?
Looks like someone made Layla: The Iris Missions for NES over on romhacking dot net which is an overhaul of the game, sounds more challenging but still very cool!
I got that Dirty Pair game on FDS and it’s horrible. Someone needs to do a new proper Dirty Pair game! So far they’ve been done.... dirty.
Is it metroidvania or hulkamania? Thats the lingering question that remains unanswered.
I LOVE KEEPING IT LOOSE WITH A DIRTY PAIR!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍

Reminds me a bit of Zillion this. Although I guess you can say that of a lot of anime inspired platform shooters back then.
Dirty Pair was an anime first, whereas Zillion was made to promote the Master System light gun.
