Adam Warren was actually in my class at the Kubert School. He didnt do manga of any type in the beginning. Around the time of Christmas break, he was actually thinking about quitting, because he just wasnt feeling it. another class mate, Joe Rosas ( Who was the only guy who was doing Anime style at the time. He went on to be the colorist for Jim Lee's run of X-Men and other marvel titles), gave Adam a stack of anime and told him, before he made his decision, check out these tapes during the break........he did, he came back and completely changed his style over to Anime over night.

The "Well! Masturbate in hell!" subtitle comes from the end of the Chow Yun-Fat movie "Full Contact." "You bastard, try this melon!" comes from the Kirk Wong-directed Hong Kong riff on The Untouchables, "Gunmen." The quotes were collected back in the day in a book about Hong Kong cinema called "Sex and Zen and A Bullet in the Head: The Essential Guide to Hong Kong's Mind-Bending Films," by Stefan Hammond and Mike Wilkins. They collected the subtitles from all these different Hong Kong films and published them in different sections of the book. That book also got me into Hong Kong films in the 90s, and I wouldn't be surprised if Adam Warren had the book as well. Aside from the "masturbate in hell" line, most of these aren't standout lines in their movies.

Had the trade paperback of Grunge: The Movie (1996). Also a fan of Magical Girl Roxy from Adam Warren. Adam Warren's artwork on hot women will never go out of style.

Thank you thank you for featuring Adam Warren. In the 90's, seeing his art was a revelation. Spot on insights about what makes it special: full-throttled manga styling, proper photo-reffed illustration, fun self-referential meta humor. 20 years later it all holds up. For another dip of AW I'd recommend Titans: Scissors Paper Stone

Adam Warren is one of my favorite artists... thank you for featuring him. He doesn't get as much recognition as he should!

Huh.... Noticed issue 3 with the ropes. Laying the seeds there for Empowered.
Also, listen to Ed and go see Adam Warrens Instagram. The dude understands form, musculature and life drawing skills and it's a treasure trove if you're looking to see how he does it.

The Gen 13 Bootleg series was a gem! I'd love to see you guys look at more of them. Issues #5 and #6 were written by Terry Moore and illustrated by Tomm Coker, really beautiful stuff. Alan Davis did a couple issues, as well as Walt Simonson. An amazing era in comics where old school meets new school and no one hates each other.

The fact you explored this comic is so awesome to me, it’s one of my all time favourite comic books!
I bought the second issue randomly from a comic shop, and the trade paperback has travelled with me ever since, I brought it out to follow this video! The tongue trigger pull is the classic!!
Because not only is Adam Warren an absolutely killer artist, but the lettering by Tomoko Saito and the colouring by Joe Rosas is absolutely awesome too!!!
I can only hope for the shoot Interview with Warren and also F yeah on the French curve video!!
Also, Warren's run on Gen 13 is the best!!

I was wondering if you guys would every talk about these books. I was working at a video store around the time these came out and I was really into John Woo/Chow Yun-Fat movies and old Shaw Brothers Kung Fu flicks like Five Deadly Venoms and whatnot and these books really hit home for me.

Excellent video! Adam Warren has more energy/enthusiasm in a panel than most have in a book! Ed hits the bulleye on the books being cookie cutter back then! Adam then and especially NOW doesn’t phone it in! Thanks again!

Man, I had this and thought it was great. First time I saw a more manga style art and really connected to it. But wow, I'm even more blown away now. I didn't appreciate just how great of an illustrator Adam Warren is. Really amazing work. Really fun. I picked up on so many techniques in this video that I want to try. Awesome.

Oh man these take me back! I remember picking these up at the Shinders in Downtown Minneapolis specifically for the Sailor Moon spoof. Adam Warren is a pretty cool guy. Used to chat with him on DA eons ago. This was like a peek back into a different lifetime.

Joe Rosas also worked on the first full-colour Dirty Pair story with Adam Warren the year before this came out. I assume Warren requested him for the job.

Warren followed this up with "Magical Drama Queen Roxy" (where Roxy imagines herself as a Sailor Moon-esc Magical Girl, in Doc Martins) before he took over the series for quite a longish run.
His letterer (Tomoko Saito) was Toren Smith's wife, and a noted Dojinshi (fan mag) artist herself. Since Warren broke in working on Dirty Pair with Smith, he probably had long talks with Saito about how he wanted things lettered. BTW, one of Saito's Pen Names was very notable (she helped translate for the Gainax crew at Anime-con 1 in 1991).
Warren is a bit of a perfectionist, which slows down his production, but can really pay off. His ability to keep track of figures in space is probably a side-effect of being influenced by Wendy Pini (another western Manga-style artist) when he broke in (this influence is very clear in "Biohazard" his debut Dirty Pair story).

I hated his Dirty Pair comics. He just wasn't suited for writing those characters and their style stories. He fit Gen 13 much better, which shouldn't be a surprise considering it was vapid content and all visuals. =P
