- Опубликовано: 5 июн 2020
- Today we are taking a look at my wifes 2008 Ford Explorer with the 4.0 sohc V6 engine. The engine is rattling very loudly upon starting and continues even when the engine is fully warmed up. Is it a bad timing chain or a failed lifter? Stay tuned and find out!

Been driving my truck for about two years with that noise still running like a champ lol
This gives me hope. I’ve had a slight noise for a few years but yesterday it started making this noise. I’m a single mom and absolutely cannot afford to fix the timing chain or get another car. Hoping I can still drive it Atleast to and from work until I can save for another vehicle 😭
It’s the timing chain tensioner for sure. I had the front and back broken and it sounded exactly like it. Had to pull the engine. I followed fordteckmakeyouloko’s videos and got it fixed.
I'm so glad Michael offered to help you, right on Michael paying it forward, it makes my heart happy that there are still good men out there!! Keep the vids coming Eric!
I'm willing to lend you a hand Im in the area I have an engine hoist and the special service tool for those chains. Let me know guy's.
Totally cool for you to help!! Awesome.
You're a good man. Thank you for helping him out!!
Top bloke.
Good job from labor hours stand point.
@@mjbuckley5 Not if it is your own vehicle, though. Takes you away from money making jobs
Just remember Eric tough times don’t last people do ... stay safe and keeping pushing ahead good luck. Congrats on your new property best wishes to you and your family 👍
Eric, I’m glad that things seem to be getting better for you! Glad you’ve been busy!
The car is just a temporary setback.
Sorry to hear that bad news, friend. I always enjoy seeing the picture on your phone of your children. Very adorable. Bless you.
Thank you for being so informative. I have an 04 that was making the same noise and now it won't even start. This tells me exactly what I need to have my mechanic fix.
You are awesome. You my friend are not only knowledgeable but a natural communicator and teacher. Stay strong and positive.
I truly appreciate your video. Went out to work yesterday morning with that exact sound, out of the blue. Just like your situation. It's a 2003 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 200k miles. Best car I've ever owned...till yesterday. I did drive it home and it made it 99% before all power died. You gave me a good starting point otherwise it'll be donated to charity. Regards
I just did the same thing on a Chrysler 300 2.7L....rocker arm inspecton. Gotta dig deep b4 throwing parts at it, great and thorough diag👍
I know the timing sucks, but you've shown you have a winning attitude, which has a way of turning bad situations to advantage. Always nice to follow along.
Timing chains, bad timing chain guides. I can recognize that rattle from 1/4 mile away.
If it's like most 4.0 SOHC engines it's got...
1. Timing chain and guides on the back that run from the passenger side cam to the jack shaft
2. Timing chain, guide, and tensioner that run from the crank shaft to the jack shaft on the front
3. Timing chain, guide, and tensioner for the right cam just on the front
4. If it's 4x4 it's got another timing chain, guide, and tensioner that runs from the crank to the balance shaft on the front.
If you listen closely you can hear the individual links from the chains rolling across the broken guides. 👂
The misfires are likely a bad coil pack, easy to confirm, look for hairline cracks or burns/glazing on the coil pack or melting inside the coils where the wires connect(engine off for this).
Don't ask me how I know. 😂
LOOKS LIKE A GOOD TIME TO REBUILD THE ENGINE SINCE IT WILL BE OUT!!!!WAITING FOR THE NEXT ONE....THANK U FOR THIS ONE.....
Hoping you find a solution for the issue. You are a good person and deserve a helping hand. 🙏👍
Sad situation..bad things always happen to honest working people..hope everything works out for you
I owned two mechanic shops before and due to being honest and young naive people took advantage of me and had to close both in the 90s.
im sorry to hear that bro im a mechanic and its hard to find good techs theses days these cheap as customers always trying to find the cheapest
Can’t wait for this series too start
You're a good guy Eric no matter what happens
This video was really helpful our Exployer is doing the same thing I thought is was a spun rod bearing so now I know what to look for thanks and hope your house purchase went well !
I feel your pain Eric, There aren't many of these motors in the UK, but they're notorious for chain issues. It's a ridiculous design. I wish you all the best luck with sorting it, and thanks for the interesting vids...
Eric, sorry to hear about this temporary setback. Keep ya head up, good things will happen!
Man you cannot catch a break! Keep up the videos whenever you can 👍💪
You really helped me out with this video. I’m sorry you went through it, but it helped me out.
Tough spot for sure. Thanks for the video. I'll be watching the updates.
First let me say I hope you were able to get the job done.
Second, if you did get it done that's great. I drove down here to Grantspass Oregon from Northern Washington to help someone out and now...
My Explorer sounds just like that and I am stranded, no help, limited funds, etc
My friend is doing what he can but remember I was coming here to help him.
With that said thinks for being a good husband and taking the time to work on the vehicle. And thank you for sharing,
Nicely educational diagnosis 👍
Bro all of your videos are useful, I wish if I was in your area to help you out in this time
I pray to God to assist you & keep you safe❤
You're an honest person & you deserve to be successful👍
Great info... Sounds like my case with my 2003 Ford Explorer 4.0L 6 Cyl. Another poss problem for me may be the cats underneath(3 of them in Calif!). A lot of these trucks have failures in the Cat Converts and they self destruct inside and have pieces/parts of them rattling around like bolts in a tin can. I have no power loss or engine lights but it the engine does have a similar rattle noise that seems to come from the top and underneath the engine. Mike in LA, Calif
Thanx Eric 👍
Thanks for the vid. I just began with this problem a week ago.
I wish I can help you. It’s hard to find a mentor and a teacher who willing to teach me. I’m sorry you’re having rough time right now. You’re a great technician. Your videos are very useful and informative. Young mechanic from top of Mississippi.
Good news the Mrs. said something... Would of hated to hear family was on the side of the road or driving 80 on the interstate. Think of it as free advertising for you! I know you don't do engine changes normally but sir you apparently have skills few technicians have these days... brains and integrity... your folks are proud I am sure. You seem more relaxed out of the shop too. All will be well. Good luck! Keep us posted.
Thank you for this. I have a 2005 mercury mariner that just started making that same exact noise last night. I am not a mechanic in anyway and my uncle who was a mechanic passed away a couple years ago, so I had no one to ask. This gave me a direction in where to check before getting rid of the car.
What happened with your car, did you get it checked out by a mechanic or just junk it?
@@donnelcrunk2122 the timing chain broke. Wasn't worth the money to fix it. Turned it on the next day to show my father and it completely busted so I listed it for parts.
I wish you the best . Cheers.
I like you because you always told the good the bed and the ugly....
Eric, I have the same noise. I wish you all the luck. God bless.
Thanks for the video well done , praying for you and your family
It was a good video. My mate's Explorer just started making this noise tonight. Funny how the sound seems to be coming out of the front of the motor, but really the problem is on the opposite side at the back. Should have bought a Holden.
Thanks for another great video Eric. I came to watch mechanic videos since closing my auto transport business 2 years ago. Just doing mechanic work as a side gig is the only thing keeping my spirits up. I just bought the ThinkDiag from your link and it paid for itself on its first job. I wish I could come help you with this but I'm 22 driving hours away. Hopefully you have family or a friend who can loan you a car until you get into your house. Best wishes, T.
Excellent video
I know that feeling man, a hug. Keep pushing though :)
Very help full thank you
We've done all the timing chains on the 4.0 in 2 days, but that is with a primary mechanic and a all hands on when they need help. And that is with all the proper equipment. I agree 100% doing the job in a driveway is a good part of a week and a lot of cussing. Not even sure I'd take on a 2008 now, as we live in the rust belt and would be needing the torch a lot. Will usually price a little higher and cross my fingers.
Awesome video, thank you. I literally know where to look now.
Eric I wish I were close to you and had the tools to help. I love seeing others in the comments who are willing to give you a hand. BTW I absolutely *love* the ThinkDiag tool - it is my default scanner now, even found live misfire counters and tons of bidirectional controls. Amazing tool. Had to export the APK to my tablet though, not sure why it showed as incompatible with my Galaxy Tab A. But once I got the APK on there it worked perfectly! A poor-man's "fancy scan tool!"
excellent video
Bad luck man,I hope it goes smooth for you! Congrats on the new house! 👍
I have 2004 explorer with the same problem 250,000 miles on his way to the crusher as I write this. Sorry to hear about your trouble but it'll work out
Congrats on the house
I wish someone from your area could hear you and help you disassemble and assemble the engine.
Murphy's law in full effect, if it's gonna drop an injector, have a plug break off or lose a timing chain it's always gonna be the biggest PITA one to fix, it's never the easy front one.
It does sound like the timing chain hopefully everything works for you you will figure it it you always do
Good luck with all you have going on.
You are very professional. I really like watching your videos. There are even fans from Israel (:
Sorry you are having these problems. I love watching your videos but not having to work on your own stuff. You have more patience than I will ever have. Good luck with the house and keep on trucking. Hard work will pay off in the end.
Great video dude....
Im from philippines.also mechanic here.
Good my friend you found the problem, hope all turns out good for you. Sure it all turns out well for you god bless you. Sam
It's a Ford. 🎶 Let it goooooo 🎶 Let it gooooo 🎶 ......this from a 3 time TBird owner
At least that Ford has a nice ac delco batt in it lol
Great video I love watching ur videos
You are Awesome
excellent
dont trust old school swinging needle vacuum gauges get your self a Nicholsen pressue pulse sensor and hook it to you snap on vantage pro scope look at vacuum pulls running and cranking for anomilies keep these videos coming best to you Eric
Just had same issue with my 04 Mountaineer. I initially thought chains and guides, it turned out to be the bottom of the piston contacting a crankshaft counterweight.
Wish I was near by help, but the UK is a little far. Keep going strong throughout your troubles, things will get back on track. Not so sure about fixing that motor with that much sludge, engine out, who knows how much money you'll end up spending to fix it and what issues you'll find once you strip it more. Best wishes to get your family back on the road.
Dame man..!! I got exactly the same issue with my explorer. Same noise, so i guess My tracks needs a ting chain job too. Tanxs man Ford your help.
What was the case?
@@Pleazure82 i already did timing chain job. Guides were broken, chains loosen. I replace everything. My Explorer works just fine now. New oil, new seals, new spark plugs, cables. Etc..
Thank you so much. Going to have to get this done.
I hope you passing this circumstances well
years ago i had a bad timing chain and I removed the pin on a link, fished the chain through with a wire, got timing correct, stuck the pin in and welded it.... It worked, but already had bent valves. It was a roller chain in the front though, so easier to access and install. I doubt if aftermarket makes a chain with a connector link.
Have had the damper on these make an unbelievable racket to.
That's a real bummer about the timing chain. Some auto parts stores have engine lifts in their "rent a tool" program (I think Auto Zone does). You can pull it yourself without a helper. I've done at least two dozen engine swaps in my lifetime, and I always did it myself
Nice brother, keep it up.
Eric, I would just park the Ford for now and try to borrow or rent a used car at a lot or from a friend. I have three old cars I bought new and would help you out but I am in NC. Buying houses and moving has brought tears to my eyes before so use whatever friends and resources you can.
Today my 2007 Ford Sport Trac with the 4.0 engine just started doing this. Within the last month I just put a new paint job, brand new rims and tires and other stuff. Probably got about $4000 tied up into it. Has 242k miles. I’m going to repair mine, it’s been to good of a truck not to put the money into changing out both timing chains.
Thanks a lot man I hope you fix your car man thank you
I went through the same problem with my 99 explorer. It developed some noises while under warranty. I took it to the dealer and they said it was fine, "intakes can be noisy". The engine light came on a couple months after the warranty expired with 15,000 miles on it. Had to replace upper and lower plenum gaskets. Took it back to dealer because mechanic said rattle from engine needed to be looked at and there was a tsb for chain tensioners. Dealer refused to do anything saying they only replaced if it looked like a problem. Timing chain broke 6 mo later. Found out this is a fatal design flaw with this engine and chain repairs are more expensive than the engine is worth. I don't buy Ford's anymore.
I knew exactly what it was 2 seconds into the video timing chain
I have a 2004 Explore, over the years we spent around $9,000 in repairs except for the engine, witch is running good because I'm original owner, and do regular oil changes. Hear is what you don't want to hear, I told my wife if anything goes wrong with the engine, donate the car, I will not fix it. So far no strange noises, just in case I have cars for charity on speed dial. No matter what you decide I wish the best of luck.
When it rains, it pours. That sucks Eric. Shit always happens at the worst time...
Finally we can see that vehicle before showing us the tundra no start
That is definitely the timing chain guides. It's a big problem on the 4.0's. If it's the rear cassette you have to remove the engine and use special tools to time the motor.
Bravo
You are chingon whit the tip
If I lived near you (me Florida) I would be glad too give the free help.
Man if I were closer Id love to help out!!
Oh man I helped a friend do chains on one of those. It was a huge nightmare. The special tools alone are around $500.
Wow everything you’re going through I’m going through right now. Car is doing the same thing and that exactly what I’m going to check as I thought it was the catalytic converter but before I even try to do that, I’m going to check what you did and same just got a house and we have to save up for this closing cost and everything just happened yesterday with all about the house and car. hope everything worked out.
Hey Eric you are due for some good luck . take care
Great video as always! Not the best design on the engine for sure..
Good labor hours on those. I believe that the chains have a 24hr ish book time.
I'm in Dallas, if you were closer I'd lend you my hoist, engine stand, and my two hands
@johnny smit Houston I believe
If I wasn't on the other side of the country I would do my best to help you out...my prayers are with you to find a good solution...Once you settle in your new home ,a newer more reliable vehicle may be available to you...
before removing everything ckeck for the rear tensonnier remove the passenger tire and splash shield and look for it at the top corner of the motor they go really bad (spring inside) and lok for the front one near themostat ,good luck!
Fortunately my 4.0L is not doing this, but if it ever does, you can bet I will be getting it fixed because I intend on keeping this car. At the price of new cars, it would be cheaper to replace a whole engine rather than replace the whole car.
Take it from a tech that wrote the book on this engine: replace or do the major required repairs or get another car.
Those of you interested, I repaired my rattle easily by doing the step-back common sense approach. Those of you who go replacing timing chains, I believe there is an easier way. When you get your vehicle drain the oil and take off the filter.. put in brand-new Valvoline 530 do not use high mileage oil use regular freaking oil get a quality filter even a super tech filter is better than a Fram in my opinion, you can get the Motorcraft filter if that's just dandy. Get a can of BG MOA put it in your oil drive it 3000 Miles train it and repeat. Your rattle will go away in time when the sludge breaks up and leaves the oil passages from neglect because of you or the previous owner. Don't use Lucas don't use seafoam don't use anything else. Nothing in the world does what BG does. Those of you who understand metal conditioning friction modifying and thermal qualities this product breaks up the sludge. All Lucas does is keep your oil sticker or stabilized or help the viscosity it does nothing for wear
How long does this fix last ?
You can split the engine and trans, slide it back, and get to the lower positioning bolt to remove the cassette. Takes me all of 4 hours.
Bet you can't do that on a Mustang...
@@mescko indeed you can. It’s easier because no front driveshaft.
Share this in a video how please! Thanks!
@@jrm163 that will come eventually. For now I hope the other vids on my channel help.
@@iamdjnam yeah, I watched most if not all Ford 4.0 SOHC related videos of yours, which are pretty helpful and have earned you thousands of new subscribers including me.
Saludos amigo Eric
Mine started doing the same thing im debating get it fixed or trade it looking at $1500-$2000 on a 2010 with 148 k but hope yours turned out great thanks for video
Ouch! Is the rear timing chain tensioner actually broken/missing? I hope there was no valve to piston contact!
Dang that sucks dude. Good luck!
