      Michael Stepanian Beautiful watch. I think steel sports “all rounders” are the way to go as a first nice watch, you can wear them anywhere. From my Explorer to your Aqua Terra to another guys Tissot Gentleman, such versatile watches that don’t come out of the watch box only for the wedding. One of my sons has slender wrists, I’m getting him the Tudor BB36 which fits this range too.

      Garrett Belcher so what’s the difference between a Rolex Explorer and a dress watch? It has a black dial, only complication is a second hand (used to be that a dress watch shouldn’t even have that), it’s slender, elegant and less than 40mm. While your Daniel Wellington or Movado homage might technically fit the dress watch definition (and that’s fine by me that you prefer such), I’ll take my Explorer.

    • @MrGarrett285
      @MrGarrett285 4 года назад +3

      @@mkyhou1160 I write books about watches, and I see you have much to learn. The basic horological functions are hours, minute & seconds of solar mean time. Anything else is a complication. The simplest and most common complication is date. The name is a giveaway. Explorers do not wear dress clothing. Also, it is in the Oyster Perpetual line that are sports watches, Rolex's dress watches are in the "Cellini" line. Some of my dress watches are Vacheron Constantin "Les Historique", Patek Philippe "Calatrava", Cartier "Tank Louis Cartier", Cartier "Santos Dumont", Tiffany & Co. "Classic", LeCoultre 1952 "Beau Brummel", etc.

    • @mkyhou1160
      @mkyhou1160 4 года назад +2

      Garrett Belcher you see defining what is a dress watch by the brand and the model not the horological form. It was considered uncouth to even have a small second hand on a dress watch, let alone a full second. It was once uncouth to even wear a watch with formal attire. Its difficult for most people not into watches to tell a fifty dollar MVMT from a Patek Calatrava, they are both thin, both have three hands, the MVMT keeps time better. I think that’s why the traditional dress watch is rapidly disappearing and their resale values are horrible, most people want to look like they invested a little more than the Walmart bargain bin on their wrist. Ian Fleming realized that decades ago when he put Bond in an Explorer and he wasn’t wrong.

      Grand Seikos with their aggressive angles and somewhat chunky dimensions don't come to mind when I think dress watches, but of course many pieces in their catalogue are far from what I described, so I agree.
      However there is something about GS that almost excludes them from the shackles of etiquette ; I think what they are doing is so unique and forward thinking that they can basically shrug of any of our self imposed rules in much the same way that Connery era Bond did with his Subby.

There I learned all about Watches and was Blessed to have an Awesome Watchmaker that taught me a lot about fine quality Watches. Plus we carried many Fine Watch Lines. The First “expensive Watch Purchase” was a Cushion Shape Solid 14KT Yellow Gold Bulova Accutron 214. The Tuning Fork Movement was one of then most Beautiful and Accurate Timepieces in the 60’s. I still have This Time Piece and enjoy listening to the “Hum!” Still a very accurate time piece. Citizen purchased Bulova (2015?) and developed a “Tri-Tuning Fork Movement” operating at 262 kHz. Accuracy +/- 5 seconds per Year. I Have a Bulova Lunar Pilot and a Rose Gold Bulova Accutron Curve Chronograph with both Watches having this movement. Gore Vidal said he would not wear jeans to the corner. Donald Hamilton said that if denim is in fashion, burlap and tarpaulin should also be. Jeans are ugly and once worn only by manual laborers.

    I wear divers or pilot watches every day; what's on my wrist is the last thing people will notice. It doesn't matter whether I'm in chinos and jeans, or a suit; these are the watches I wear. And where does it say "dress" watches have to be thin? Even a Tuna will fit under the cuff of a Brooks Brothers "dress" shirt.

      Garrett Belcher I’d say it is quite difficult to pair it with jeans and a T-shirt. Especially when you have it on jubilee bracelet and fluted bezel. If we’re thinking oyster bracelet & flat bezel, yeah maybe. But even then I’d say DJ is an in between watch. Just my thoughts.

      Hey John Künüçen,
      The Datejust is probably one of the best examples of this watch. So much that it is what Nathan wears in most of the videos. We were searching for other examples that also work for the "middle ground." Thanks for watching!
