Rules to match your watch with your outfit?
    Sounds a little too much?
Imagine a man in a tuxedo at a black-tie event.
He has poise, style and a posture that grabs everyone's attention.
He casually turns his wrist to check the time... a Casio calculator wristwatch with a rubber strap...
    FAIL!!
This is the power of a wristwatch, gentlemen - it can either break or build an outfit!
Since men wear limited jewelry, a watch is an expression of their personality. The best wristwatches are simple, versatile, sophisticated and classic.
Most men prefer to own more than one watch so they can wear the appropriate timepiece to complement their outfit.

+Real Men Real Style I believe from most to least formal: 1) Black band, silver metal, white face 2) Brown band, silver metal, white face 3) Black band, black metal, black face 4) Grey band, black metal, black face... I based my judgements specifically on (in my opinion) the white face being more formal than the black face. Followed by the silver metal to be more classic and formal than the black metal... A bit contrary to some of the other youtubers, but my justification is: a navy suit with brown shoes demand the brown band watch. The all black watch seems more of a fashion statement than a classic staple.

I generally like your videos, but when you have a sponsor like you do here for a watch that has almost no redeeming value it really it seriously compromises your integrity in my opinion. I am a watch guy and have 2 dozen watches in all the categories that you mentioned and I agree with your guidance. I just think that the sponsors watches all look like cheap $20 quartz Timex watches. For what it is worth the most versatile of the ones you showed would likely be the silver bezel, white face and black leather band. It goes with everything.

    • @yomama8212
      @yomama8212 7 лет назад +10

i wouldn't really say that having a sponsor changes anything, all it basically do is that he makes use of the sponsor as an example. Plus Antonio himself mentioned that it was sponsored.

I don't agree. The watches shown are quite fashionable and look alright. Personally I have a Breitling and a couple of Tissots, but I paid more for them. If I didn't care as much about watches, I would have no problem with the sponsored watches.

    • @GordonMiller
      @GordonMiller 7 лет назад +16

Nothing wrong with inexpensive watches. In many ways anyone who spends more than $199 on a watch should have their head examined. This coming from the guy with the $150,000 collection that I mostly liquidated since I never wore most of them. Rather have the cash.

    • @mongxengxuang2350

Disagree. The main content of the video is matching the watch type with your clothing. Do note that he even uses non-sponsored watches when showing examples of each watch category of watches so he's not desperately pushing his sponsored brand as you have mentioned.
I personally think the sponsored watches are nice and decent looking. Whether it's worth it is up to the buyer but this video is in no way a compromise to his integrity.

    1. Black Band, white face would be the most formal. It would work very well in a black tie event, not only because its leather would compliment the shoes and match the color pallet of the suit but it would also be very subtle and under spoken, something which is crucial of a timepiece to be able to do in a black tie event as it is not considered polite to be checking the time at one. The Silver could also match cufflinks.
    2. Brown, Silver would be able to fill semi-formal to work formal (not black tie). It has a nice leather which if used well could compliment brown shoes, the white face gives with silver gives it a nice clean cut look to it. The silver also makes it easy to match with Cufflinks and a Tie clip, it also makes it very easy to match with other metals (eg Lighters, pens, glasses) This watch could compliment both a formal work suit or a sports jacket.
    3. Black Face, Black leather would be for me anyway a backup watch that could suit anything from a casual dress code to a formal work code. Due to it's color scheme it's very versatile, and doesnt draw any attention at all. This would not be my first choice as it would be very difficult to match that with other metals (eg Cufflinks, Tie clip, Lighter).
    4. Black Face with blue is a bit of a wild card. I could see that been worn with a light colored sports jacket but nothing more formal than that, but on the flip side it is also very fashion forward. If one was wearing blue suede shoes (no pun intended) this would go brilliant with it, or if someone was wearing a lovely baby blue tie this would go well with that. Even a blue flower on a suit would match that.
    5. The most versatile watches, or the watch which I know I'd use most would the new york brown and bronze (tribecca I believe its called) It has a nice old style look which, is capable of being matched with semi-formal to formal. It has a lovely colour scheme to it, the only problem with it is that I have no metals to match it. But I can see myself buying metals to match it. The Brown and Silver watch matches the Tribecca with versatility and is my preference.

First of all thank you Antonio for making these videos and sharing your knowledge. I've gotten a lot of inspiration from your videos to upgrade my wardrobe and make me more aware of fashion and dressing well.
For the 4 watches i would rank them in the following way:
    1. Black strap with metal, this is of course a dress watch and that makes it the most formal.
    2. Black strap with black, I would rank this watch before the brown strap watch because the strap is black, even though i personally like to wear a similar brown watch with business attire.
    3. Brown strap with metal, Works nicely with a lighter suit brown shoes and a matching belt.
    4. Grey strap with black, Would work nicely with casual wear.
Thank you again Antonio and keep up the good work on your videos!
    Best regards,
    Rasmus

    Hi Antonio,
From my perspective the most formal would be the first watch -the black strap. Then the next formal would be the second watch with the brown strap. The next formal would be the all black watch. And the least formal would be the one with the gray strap.
I see a really formal watch as one with a black strap - kind of like when you go in to an interview, you wear black shoes, rarely brown ones. The all black, is more of a sporty look in my opinion and the gray suede is more of a casual dress down look but to be honest, it looks the best out of all of them. I think it has a flair to it that isn't overstepping boundaries but looks unique.
I haven't commented much but I've been a subscriber for a while. Love your content and as a college kid going into finance, you have really helped. Keep doing what you do!

+Real Men Real Style How come this one didn't show up in my subscription feed? :(
Anyway, in the order of formality:
    1. Black Leather with white face - Contemporary and classic. Stitched black leather and polished silver bezel adds a lot of sophistication to the watch. However, this piece isn't quite versatile. Good with formals only.
    2. Brown Leather with white face - Brown is the new black, specially in the case of accessories! It adds that needed pop in an outfit. Subtle but an important pop! This piece is a perfect conversation starter for it's laid back yet sophisticated attitude. The perfect blend of classic and modern. Simple aesthetics with neutral colour tone makes this the perfect option for everyday use (Formal or Casual).
    3. Black Leather with Black Face - All black is always very conservative. This could be the go to watch for people with a stark stylish sense. Could either be dressed up or down easily.
    4. Grey Suede Leather with Black face - Suede leather equals casual to me. Be it the shoes, belts, wallets or the watch bands. But on the contrary here, the 'stitched' suede leather strap is adding some formality to the watch. But it's just not enough to call it a dress watch. It would be the perfect field watch for casual to semi-formal settings. Black and grey being neutral colours can work with any shade or colour of shirt, pant or shoes. :)
    That's my list +Antonio.
    Cheers!

    my ratings:

    2. brown/white - light/navy suits
    3. all black - dark dress casual
    4. black grey - more of a fun, smart casual piece

Love the video as I just purchased my first watch (Tissot Tradition Perpetual Calander) for my 17th!
    As for the quiz...
    1. Most formal: Black band with white face as it seems a little more rounded and gentle (simple?). The band is also thinner continuing that minimalist style.
    2. Tanned brown band with white face as still has a slight formality to it through the silver and white. The band is easily worn with a suit and nice brown/tanned leather shoes.
    3. The black watch with grey band. This is arguable but because we are ordering the WATCHES not the bands I am inclined to put this next :) The watch's structure is a little more minimalist and sleek. The band is least formal in my opinion so i would exchange that.
    4. The black watch with black band. This watch is last as I feel it almost takes on that large sports watch appearance (obviously without the features of sports watch but just in regards to size/shape). The black band however is 3rd most formal.
    Thanks again! :)

I've always thought that a white face is the most formal so so my list goes accordingly:
    Black and white
    Brown and white
    Black and black
    Gray and black
My reasoning is that black on white is timeless and is one that just about anyone could pull of with relative ease, for brown and white, it may be a bit harder for people, if only to find an outfit that can compliment it, but if managed properly brings an air of sophistication. I think black leather always holds its formality no matter the face of the watch so I put this as third, it seems to me to be a young mans idea of dressy, it looks nice and is quite bold, it's a watch that can hold its own, lastly is the gray and black, which to me at least is something more fitted for a walk in a park than for a trip to a theatre, it can compliment casual clothing, but I wouldn't even consider putting it on a suit, maybe with a sports jacket in a hot place if I was wearing linen, but only if I hadn't brought anything else, a casual watch.

  • @noahrsimmons
    @noahrsimmons 8 лет назад +1

Let me starting off by saying I really enjoy your videos, Antonio.
From formal to least formal/ casual
    1. Black silver and white
    2. Brown silver and white
    3. Grey Black and Black
    4. Black Black and Black
    5. The minimal collection is more versatile than the classic collection.
I chose this order for the following reasons. Firstly, because the black and silver watch was so perfectly simple yet classy, it deserved the number one slot. The brown watch, though still dressy was slightly less so due to the brown leather strap. Contrary to what many think, I believe the grey and black watch is more formal than the all black watch. The suede band is really cool, and I think it has more versatility for a casual outfit than the entirely black one. Lastly, the black belongs at the bottom because it appears to be the most rugged. Since it is entirely black, I think it sticks out a little too much to be ranked at any of the higher levels of formality. Plus, since it is entirely black, stains, scratches, etc. won't be nearly as apparent when worn, so it could potentially be worn for field/ outdoor use.
Finally, the bands and faces of the minimal collection at the fifth watches are so beautifully simple that they can be endlessly interchanged. The bands and faces look great.
By the way, I'd love one of those watches.

+Real Men Real Style I took the exact order this man had (1,4,3,2). I will try to put to words as to why. The first watch with white and black matches the tuxedo scheme, black and white/silver. Number four seems okay for bussiness suits in a darker tone. Number three seems bussiness casual, it's an eye-catcher but does look professional. The second watch seems casual with the brown leather bands. This logic basically calls for the first dresscode that comes to mind from seeing the watch alone.

Not sure what his logic is but mine is the same sef of choices. The black silver is the traditional and safe choice that screams "I dont rock the boat". The triple black watch is the most versatile as it can be used for the most business, casual (statement piece), and formal Tux. It is usually seen as being the minimalist (hence elegant) and smartest choice. Of course, you really cant wear triple black to the gym (diver or chrono instead) but I question your choice of a diver watch with a suit. The only people Ive seen making that mistake were ex-military, and both my parents were ex-military.

    2. brown / silver

  • @KorriTimigan
    @KorriTimigan 8 лет назад +7

Okey dokey! Here's my essay on the matter. Going most formal to least.
    1. The most formal here is clearly the white face, silver metal, black band. The reason for this is it hearkens to black and white tie rules. White tie and black tie are the most formal because they feature little to no colour. The elegance of formal dress comes from the high contrast in the black and white. Patterns and textures are minimal, elegance through simplicity. This watch is consistent with these rules.
    2. The second is the white face, silver metal, brown band. In formal business-wear you still want moderate minimalism. That said, when talking about suits splashes of colour and texture are acceptable in the effort of personalising an otherwise uniform outfit.
For example; patterned ties, silk or otherwise brightly coloured pocket squares, or interesting pieces of jewelery like rings and cufflinks (or indeed watches) are good ways to subtly add personality to your suit. This watch is slightly more casual than the first with its brown band, but still looks simple and smart. With a medium/dark grey or navy suit it would look very nice, with complimenting shoes of course.
    3. This one's trickier. . . I'll go with the all black. Black is a smart colour. It's sober and doesn't draw undue attention. So a watch in all black is one that doesn't stand out either by understated beauty or by bright eye catching design; it's easily the most neutral of them all. It's a casual option for someone relaxing and not drawing attention to themselves. Because of this it wouldn't be appropriate for a business setting, which requires a degree of sophistication.
    4. Formality seems to fall on a bit of a bell curve. One the most formal end we have dark colours punctuated with small amounts of high contrast light colours.
Now semi formal through to casual-wear has far less contrast using matching colours and shades. A truly informal piece would take the conventions of the formal and simply reverse them. A stark white tuxedo jacket and trousers with a black shirt and white bowtie would absolutely not be seen as formal wear.
The watch with the black face, black metal and light grey strap is therefore the least formal. It's the opposite of the most formal. Lighter colours are inherently less dressy. Where the black watch seems unassuming and relaxed, this watch's light band is designed to draw attention. The suede strap also adds to the casual nature.
    5. These are all very nice watches, and all adhere pretty closely to the formal idea of minimalism. Even the least formal of the entire collection isn't exactly garish, and I could easily see myself wearing any of them. I believe the most versatile is the white face, silver metal, brown band. As I pointed out above, dark colours with splashes of lighter colours are more formal. The dark brown is dark enough to work with a business suit delicately, but light enough to add that bit of character and class to a less formal outfit.
I don't think I could have shoehorned the word "formal" in any more times than I did. That word is now losing all meaning to me!

    Usefull video Antonio! Thank you.
From most formal to least formal, my rankins are:
    1. Black, Silver metal, white face -> can be matched with all the types of clothing, except sports wear. Casul wear I would say is more or less to be matched with this watch, but it can be pulled of.
    2. Brown, silver metal, white face -> can be matched to suits that are more light in color. Business formal, business casual and casual wear as categories.
    3. Black band, black metal, black face(all black) -> due to the all black color this watch, in my opinion can be matched with also with a black tie, so it can be worn as like the black and silver metal with white face watch.
    4. Grey suede, black metal , black face -> let's say it is more as a smart casual watch , but it cannot be worn with a black/white tie.
The most versatile watch for me is the all black one, because at first sight you would not say it can be worn with a black suite, but after a matter of thinking, it can be pullled of.

Hi Antonio, thanks for replying :)... Main reason is black and white combination always makes it formal... Be it suits like black suit and white shirt...or simply a pair of black trousers and white formal shirt.

I totally recommend The 5th. I got the Upper East, great discount with RMRS code. What Antonio said, I get more compliments from this watch, than from anything else. As the 5TH say, this item is exclusive by availability and not by price. Just got the Rose Gold and Peach for my girlfriend. It looks and feels far more expensive than it actually is. Great Recommendation Antonio. I'll be getting the Broadway Next.

One question - size. I have montblanc 36mm dress watch, going to buy tissot office/casual watch, but what I can afford is 42mm and I am afraid it will look bizarrely huge on my medium size wrist. And while it looks nice for now, large watch can go out of style pretty soon. What’s your advice on watch size?

+Kevin Newbury great! what's your logic on your ranking?

    • @Newburyk
      @Newburyk 8 лет назад

      +Real Men Real Style
#1 matches with white/black tie outfits
      #2 matches with things like brogues/navy suits/etc
#4 since it is a monochrome watch, it fits closer to the casual side of things, like perhaps dress shirt with chinos
#3 most casual because the grey "pops" (at least to me) and seems like a very casual option, great with jeans and a plaid shirt
Just my thoughts, thanks for the response Antonio!

  • @karamveersingh5046

    Most formal to least
    Black-White-silver
    Brown-White -silver
    Black -black-grey
    Black-black-black
The most versatile out of all the watches in my option is the black and grey since it is like a good pair of jeans you can dress it up with a sport coat but you can also dress it down with a T-shirt much like this watch thanks for the great videos can say that I have learnt a lot from your videos which I have used to look smart and tidy much appreciated Singh

  • @casillasb

New subscriber and enjoying your videos! Softball on the watch formality, but I did have a question regarding white face vs. black face on a dress watch. Specifically am looking at the Omega DeVille with roman numerals and only a date complication to keep it clean. Have been leaning toward the white face with black croc strap because it is considered more formal, but love the black face version...perhaps because of my history with divers. Anyway, your comments are appreciated. Also regarding your contest from most formal to least in my opinion: White face black band, white face brown band, all black and wrapping it up with black face grey band. Keep up the great work!!!

    Antonio,
What category would a watch fall into if it has a stainless steel bracelet, but a business style face/casing? My mom got me a Seiko SRPA29 as a graduation (shoutout to Edinboro University) present and I'm thinking to wear it for interviews/more formal occasions. Is this a good watch to match with a dark suit and black oxfords? I usually go for all silver metal in my outfits...

    Great video as always Antonio!
For my pics Id say (Formal to least formal)
    1. Black Strap with White Face
    2. Brown Strap with White face
    3. Black Strap with Black Face
    4. Grey Strap with Black Face
    5. For the fifth watches:
Minimal style: id chose the Brown Strap Black Face with Silver frame watch as being most versitile as you can dress it up with a business suit or dress it down with a blazer and jeans
For the Classic style id chose the Brown Strap White Face with Cream frame watch as ot would also look nice with a business casual suit or even a nice sweater or jumper. It would also work well with a casual dress shirt ans chinos.
Thanks and keep up the awesome work!

I have a Rodina watch which is a knockoff of a Nomos Tangente. Added a black mesh band to it, and it looks great with any outfit. Appropriate for formal, but also a relaxed style that fits with casual clothing.

Do you match watch face/dial color to the outfit? I've seen on the Internet, one says that lighter colored watch face is for the day, while darker ones for the evening/night. Also some other place says they match face color to their shirt/jacket. What's your opinion? Thanks!

    From most formal to least
    1. Black with silver metal white face
    2. Brown with silver metal white face
    3. Black band black face and black metal
    4. Grey suede with black face and black metal
I think the Upper East collection is most versatile because you can go formal with the black band or more casual with the brown. It's a two for one deal best bang for your buck! Thanks Antonio!

    From most to least formal:
    1. Black/silver/white
    2. Brown/silver/white
    3. Black/black/black
    4. Grey/black/black
    5. I would say the New York collection is the most versatile because they have 3 watches with black bands ( 1 brown) and silver/gold/black and what looks like a rose gold metal for the pink band watch. I love the gold metal, with the black band, and the black face.

I'm extremely late to this video but i also JUST got into watches! Now i bought a armitron gold tone watch and love it( i fell in love with the idea of owning all kinds of watches with the right mindset of coarse)
All i want to really know is where did you get that watch in the thumbnail??? I like the watch and the bracelet type of strap. I never thought a watch could look so good with a bracelet strap(and no i'm not talking about that weird trend that you wear a watch a bracelet or few with it) that thumbnail watch is made with a bracelet already attached to it.....PLEASE i would be GREAT if you answered my question.
