You have no idea how much I respect you for knowing that you don’t wear a watch with black or white tie
Watch me. No pun intended
I've been working in factories for years. A Casio digital watch is the most perfect thing for a dirty, damaging environment. I can smack it, scrape it, splash it with every type of liquid available or even put it through extreme temperatures and it always works. And it's easy to put on and off and stays on. Better yet, it's practical. It will show the date and time easily in a simple view, act as a quick timer and it glows for if you're working in a dimly lit area. Not enough to see by, but to tell the time.
And if it makes you happy, then by all means. It probably wouldn't be a very aesthetic choice for most.
@@lisbetsoda4874 Yeah, digital Casios are for the factory.
@@SPNKr16 some Casios can look very classy. Like Casio AQ 230.
@@vipeton.8927 Indeed. This one is a 70s-80s classic. Not sure what the sartori up-themselves cringelords have to say about classy digital watches though. I grew up wearing a Fossil leather cuff watch, 70s inspired/reproduction. It's been worn enough that the leather plys have delaminated from each other and nobody makes reproductions of the cuff. As a kid I loved it, still do but just can't wear it nor pull it off with most outfits if I revisited it today. I'd like a watch like that brand new, just not early 2000s digital fashion of course.
I ended up switching to a Casio FW knockoff, wore that for a long time. Then switched to a Casio solar of the same type. I've since switched to a Seiko H601 as my daily watch, but I don't really wear watches anymore. Breaks up my silhouette and I'm not a fan of glancing at the time anymore either. For the past 3 years my dress watch is a 1970s Bulova Day Date in stainless steel. Timeless automatic beauty, restored before I received it in like new condition.
Brake cleaner can ruin a casio
I have about 20 different watches. Believe it or not, I choose which watch to wear based on what pair of shoes I'm going to wear because usually the type of shoes I'm going to wear is based on my overall attire.
The LL Bean Commando Sweater is a take on the Wooly Pully Sweater the U.S. Marine Corps adopted from the Royal Marines. Eventually, the Navy, Air Force, and Army adopted variations with a V neck and Epaulets.
Finally a men's style video that properly addresses watches! I particularly appreciated the black tie segment in which you showed a Reverso (mine is in rose gold). I prefer to flip mine around to the blank back so as to give the appearance of giving my attention to the event. Otherwise if wearing white metals, I wear a Rolex Cellini Danaos to keep wrist presence understated. Great Video!
Thank you, Justin! Nice tip about the JC Reverso
The irony here is that the Reverso was originally designed to be a sportswatch for polo, with the reverse function meant to keep the crystal from getting scratched, or worse.
I wear dress watches with casual attire all of the time and I challenge anyone at GG to stop me from doing so!
What about pocket watches? I’m completely into pocket watches, wristlets and trench watches.
Pocket watches are a nice touch of distinction at the black tie level. For any business (emphasis on the "business") attire, they're quirky … which is either a big pro or con, depending on your line of business. For smart casual, it's likely a (over)statement. But that's something that some people can pull off.
I've worn a pocket watch. (Mostly as smart casual.) I'm not trying to discourage you. Just be aware of the message you're potentially projecting.
They’re good for cosplayers, that’s about it.
My grandfather wore his cartier tank just about everywhere including the beach and pool side it worked well for him in just about all occasions and he vastly preferred wearing it over the larger dive watches and Chronographs that he also owned.
Exactly. Muhammad Ali and Andy Warhol did the same. A Cartier Tank can go anywhere.
Lol my boss wears the same Cartier for so many years it looks good and hardly noticeable
@@frankv7068 I actually can't picture my granddad without it. It never really stood out either. It just suited him. Shame that the newer versions are much more attention grabbing in design.
@@briang530 I totally agree, my boss is an older fella he’s a 6+ foot tall with bear arms and has a that tinny Cartier two tone, Very natural. I wish I could pull of an everyday forever watch like that, instead of having this dumb collection of Rolex and Omegas that calls so much attention, and everyone has them.
@@frankv7068 the struggle is real. I suspect that my grandfather had a handful of Rolexs and Omegas that I never really saw him wear from when he was younger and felt the need to have them for variety for the occasion.
Besides collection is fun when you're younger. Simplicity and convenience is a benefit of age.
The Omega Aquaterra works for all occasions. For the more affordable options , the Seiko DressKX. In between, the Longines Conquest will work.
I’d say the Seiko is still a bit too sporty and quite thick for formal wear. If you want to get a really affordable dress watch, I’d recommend the Tissot Everytime 38mm. Really thin, elegant and quartz. Right around €200.
love to see the marlin getting some love.
Dress Budget Watch: Orient Bambino 7 for sure
I wear my cartier tank literally 98% of the time....even when I sleep lol
You'll be happy to know we're planning to do a video all about the Cartier Tank watch! Stay tuned!
I don't have the money to purchase an omega. But I do have a g-shock when I'm carpenting, an orient kamasu for my business casual and a old timex chronograph with nato strap for holliday or weekend at the beach
Way too much watch snobbery in this world. A modest watch often is far superior to some gaudy bling or a huge dive watch.
Tudor watches are also a great brand as they have older Rolex mechanisms as it is a junior brand owned by the same people, but are cheaper overall with still great quality
Yes, 007 wears dive watches with his tuxedo and so do I. Dinner suits are not seen that often these days so most people are not aware that wearing a wristwatch with it is a fauxpas. As long as the dinner jacket has the correct fit, your bow tie is tied by hand, your shoes polished, your shirt has french cuffs etc. you will most likely be the best dressed guy regardless of that fauxpas. Want to channel your inner Bond? Then also ditch the cummerbund. Just do it with confidence.
My only watch is a Seiko Sport 5. I always stay in the casual to business casual range and it works with almost all my outfits
what is the best watch dial color for a teenager casual wear. Ps. wil be my first watch
Does a dinner watch call for a dark face or can I wear wear a simple white face watch for evening dinner?
Well...about time.
No really...a very good installment of GG...It verified that I was doing a few things correctly & taught me a few things I didn’t know (evening wear...which I’ll never get a chance to experience). And yes, I do have a pocket watch...inherited. So that advice was useful. All in all, a useful video and...well timed.
I wear dress watch with every outfit except sportswear!! Love the discrete elegance and how it can rise the formality of an outfit!! Guys wearing a watch is not an exact science your watch a lot of times determine your preference of style!! So wear what you want it varies from person to person!! So wear what you are!! You can be casual or quite dapper
Fact: Dress watches works with every single kind of outfit. Maybe not every situation, like swimming or woodworking, but every kind of outfit. An 18k gold Cartier Tank looks awesome with some jeans and and a t-shirt. And I’ve worn my original 1932 pre-JLC Reverso with sneakers and a denim shirt. On the other hand, chunky divers and chronos rarely look good with suits and absolutely not with tuxedos. You’re not James Bond.
I think a dress watch will work for anything from smart casual to formal. But I think it's overdressed with casual casual (regardless of how you've chosen to wear it). A sample size of one (your experiences) … that's not irrefutable proof. You wore a dress watch into casual situations, and nobody hurled insults to your face. And maybe a few people offered you compliments (you didn't say so … and if they did, the might have been sartorially inept) … but I've received a large number of undeserved compliments in my life.
Do you have a better set of evidence as proof?
@@karlr750 there are different levels of dress watches. You could both be right.
thank you. love watches
A Submariner or similar plain dive watch is good for just about anything.
A Breitling aficionado here. At work, I had to work a dark suit, white shirt, decent tie and wingtip. And I wore my Navitimer, a beauty of beauties. A crock leather strap, of course.
Now I am retired. No more penguin dress for me. T-shirts, jeans, sneakers, aviators, baseball caps .... I feel born again. And a very loose steel bracelet Crosswind
Chronomat dancing around my left wrist, almost all of the time.
But my love for my Navitimer is much, much stronger than my deep, deep hatred for the penguin uniform.
I would like to know what does the color of the watch face says about the formality of the watch. Is one more formal over the other when you have a White or Black face watch?
I love the diverse cast at Gentleman's Gazette. It's really great to see how multiple different styles look on multiple different body and skin types. Especially as a bigger dude, its hard to find any fashion icons who have the same body type as me.
Welcome back. Love your videos honing and updating my skills. I share too.
Can i wear a Casio MTP black dial with a suit?
My edc watch is a casio mdv 107 with a pepsi bezel :)
the speedmaster is nice but nothing i can afford :o
We're currently working on something all about affordable watches - stay tuned!
My Classic Pocketwatch ( with cover) is Always in style and Classy, the only changeable option would be the fob. I usually keep one of my Grandfather's old Railroad Switch keys, in a Formal Setting I carry his Gold Railroad Retirement Watch, sansfob.
I've been a watch enthusiast since childhood, but not a watch snob. I really love many watches that can be acquired for less than $500. I also love many that cost significantly more, but price often is not an indicator of quality. If I had to pick one brand that satisfies me with both their dress watches and more casual watches it is Hamilton, both new models as well as vintage. Oddly enough their vintage watches are American made, but their modern watches are Swiss made. A discussion of sizing should be included. Even the best watch for an occasion is wrong if its too big for your wrist. Unfortunately the most recent trends in watchmaking have seen much if not most of the case sizes getting larger with 40 mm now largely becoming a standard when 38 mm was more common 10 years ago and vintage watches typically made even smaller. I vastly prefer something no bigger than 38 mm unless the lug to lug distance is relatively small for its size. If you are a big guy its easy to go bigger, but if you are not, its getting harder and harder to find new watches that aren't too big. I definitely favor dress watches even in casual settings. I have never found dive watches suitable for anything other than diving. I don't do much diving. I fully realize that my view is rather extreme. I really don't have problems with others wearing dive watches in informal settings, but it just looks wrong to me the way many wear them with a suit or in more formal settings. A better substitute for dive watches in less formal settings are field watches and pilot watches.
I find the obsession with diver watches is hilarious. You say you don't do much diving. I am going to go out on a limb and suggest that less than 10% of those wearing diver watches have ever gone diving. It is one of those dream scenarios where they imagine themselves as more active than they are.
I do not think that anyone really cares.
@@Judge_RR you are probably right. At the same time, it is my least favourite genre of watches. I really love understated dress watches the best. But I do know that some men think they become more manly by wearing diver watches.
@@lisbetsoda4874 It's just a watch. If the diver is not chunky and clunky, it's perfectly okay to wear one especially in casual settings and moods. Vintage designs did it way better, yes they are big but not as much as today's tryhard diver chunky watches which scream (if they were a person) compared to the calm and cool design of the 80s and earlier. That's the only type of diver that I have. One is enough. My dress watch is a 1970s Bulova Day Date and I can still wear it in casual dress.
Hey Alex how to choose your watch with you outfit idk how to
Unlock the secret to effortless style with the perfect watch for every occasion, from casual outings to formal events
The last place I would bring Rolex is a camping trip
To bring Rolex to camping trip with yourself is something same like going to camping or hiking by wearing lacquer shoes and suit trousers
I wear divers. Half are on bracelets. Half are on NATOs. What I wear depends mostly on what I want to look at all day; though when wearing a suit, more likely than not I'll wear a diver on a bracelet.
I have a vintage egin Gold dress watch
Would you consider making a video on the benefits of wearing a watch nowadays? Like why one should wear a watch in 2022 when we all have phones, computers, etc etc.
Get a smart watch and you will know real quick, check ,emails notifications time, texts and calls without pulling out a phone . The wrist watch allows you to glance at it to check the time without being obvious. It also is just an accessory that looks nice when out and about.
"We all have phones, computers, etc..."
You'd like kind of silly booting up your laptop just to know what the time is, no? Pulling out your phone is better, but still a very obvious gesture. It's easy to disguise a glance at your watch, so it's not obvious that you're counting down to happy hour. And no, don't wear a plastic watch (smart or otherwise) unless you're working under your car or chopping wood. Wear something that makes you smile when you look at it.
Brother we can wear overcoat in india please reply for this
IMO most men, especially larger men should avoid square watches. The Rolex Day Date/Datejust can literally do everything. For something more affordable, the Tissot Gentleman is a great all around watch. I also avoid white dials as they look kind of cheap. The whole white tie dress code is a bunch of nonsense, a good watch goes with everything.
Can a watch with a metal bracelet be considered a dress watch if the face is an elegant and simple face?
I am considering buying an old Elgin watch.
Black tie or white tie means no watches should be worn. You don't wear watches when you go to an event.
If you have to wear a suit, the best solution is a simple watch with a white dial and no complications that's "metallic" or "silver when it comes to the colour of the casing and has a simple black leather strap. A watch that is simple, with a white dial and not complications that has a "bronze" coloured casing and brown straps is less formal but can still look great with the right shoes and belt. The outfit will be a little less formal but that's another issue.
Sports watches are far more diverse these days. You don't need a watch on a metal bracelet to have a sports watch. Plastic or rubber watch straps are very flexible and comfortable. You should own one.
Where would a Rolex DateJust fall in these categories or does it cross multiple categories?
Its one of the most versatile pieces created so you could wear it to most occasions. I reckon beach and a white tie event excluded.
So many questions I don’t know where to start…. Ok, so how do you feel about using a Rolex sports watch, specifically the Daytona, in these settings? Does a watch like that alter the rules? Or would you suggest a Datejust or Day-date? I have plenty of other watches, but I feel like for the money for a Daytona I should wear it pretty well everywhere, except for maybe white tie type events.
My first time seeing Nathan in a video. hello Nathan

True. Its thing of the past. 2016 was the last year.

What a TIME I had watching this video!
Sorry, just trying to appease Preston's pun quota.
Absolutely fantastic video, thank you. Looking forward to getting a new watch soon!
I'd be interested to learn about the practicalities of swapping watch straps. How do you do it, what tools and skills are needed? What are the odds that you can use a strap on more than one watch? Are there practical differences between various types of strap?
E.g. I like a strap that doesn't bulge at the fastening point, so that it won't dig into my wrist when I rest my arm on a desk (e.g. using a mouse). And if that means a metal bracelet with a flat "jeweller's clasp" for work, I'd like to swap it easily to a leather strap for an evening occasion.
It’s generally quite simple with a standard strap tool, which looks like a rod with a pin on one end and a two-pronged fork in the other. Some watches have some special strap fastenings with screws and such though, but those aren’t too common. You can wear any strap on any watch with the same lug width, so if you own several watches with, say, a 20mm lug width, you can swap straps between them. Straps or bracelets with curved ends might be tricky though, but 99% of after market leather straps have regular straight ends. When it comes to differences in straps, I’d recommend not swimming with a leather strap. You’re better off with a rubber or fabric strap, such as a nato strap or my personal favourite, a perlon strap. Perlon straps are woven nylon, super comfortable and easy to change. Works in lots of situations too and are perfect for summer. Check out Eulit, who invented the perlon strap and still makes them.
Check out Marc at Island Watch. Has many how to videos. Urban Gentry channel also has a bunch of good information.
The standard watch strap that comes with your watch requires a tool (inexpensive, don't worry) to remove or replace it.
As someone who changes watch straps with alarming regularity, I prefer quick-release watch straps. Using those, it takes a few minutes (at most) to swap straps. If you have a thumbnail (or a fingernail), that's enough of a tool to change quick-release straps.
Most watch lug widths (and straps) are either 18mm, 20mm, or 22mm width. Obviously, you can't use a 20mm strap with a watch that has 18mm or 22mm lugs. But if you have multiple watches with 18mm lug widths, they can all use the same 18mm straps.
It’s super easy with a smart watch
Why don't u wear the watch on the non-mouse hand?
These shots show me you are way into the wrist game, jlc, Rolex, Tudor, omega are what you want
The watch of watches for me was an Omega... Hah. As it belong to my granddad...I thought it was pretty cool...then I had a 22carat gold pocket watch whooo so cool ... Hahaha...
Nothing makes me sadder than the fact it is nearly impossible to find 35mm watches nowadays. The watch market became pretentious and sad.
@@TheSultan1470 alright?
Dive watches in business casual? Gotta disagree with you on that. Excellent information on the rest tho.
Which category do you prefer to see dive watches, Pedro?
In the Every Day category and less formal categories.
In my opinion dive watches & chronographs are too sporty to wear with a suit. But is just my opinion, we all have seen bond wearing bracelets with white/black tie. 😅
Oh dear, the casual section recommending sports watches, them featured men wearing suits with sports watches!

Alas, no love for the poor abandoned pocket watch.
Big surprise, you don’t seem to talk about the most versatile watch: the smart watch. With easily changeable straps and faces, a smart watch can go great in multiple of those settings.
It's because those smart watches have no place in the discussion of "The right watch to wear with your outfits".
@@Psydrre sure they do. I’m wearing an Apple Watch right now with a natural shell cordovan strap. I have over 20 different straps that really enhance the versatility of the watch, which also serves as a communications and notification device. It’s got far more features and uses than a Casio, yet can be dressed up to be a perfect match for smart or business casual wear. In fact, when the watch face is set to be simple, it doesn’t even look that far off from a business-wear watch.
i don't own a smartwatch so i cant tell
i do however have more than enough watches to fit any possible occation
That is not even considered a watch, it has no place in the discussion. Also, just makes you look like you’re addicted to technology and/or social media. Quite distasteful and unnecessary in my opinion. But you should do whatever pleases you.

This guy has a wart on his watch wearing hand and he is chubby guy number 2 - even worse than Kyle. What exactly is he adding to the team. Way too casual, as well. He comes across as borderline sloppy.
Not a fan of the direction this channel has headed in the past 2 years. Preston is more than enough, the rest I pass on.
@@SPNKr16 find Kirby (i forget his las name) and find Sartorial Talks. The best channel bar none.
@@lisbetsoda4874 I used to like Kirby Allison, but GG - what it used to be - and Sartorial Talks are the best channels. I've been watching Robert Powers for years, he's a thrifty sort. Very handy and professional for a hobbyist but he's branching out into more things that he wants to do. That's what I like, he does what he wants and it still works for the past 2 years.
I like Raphael because he shows you how to break the rules.
I like Hugo Jacomet because he inspires me to be truly unique, and since I had somewhat of a punk upbringing for much of my early years, his approach to this whole thing really works for me. He's traditional, yet has attitude and raw passion for what he's trying to achieve.
I don't mind Kirby Allison but he's way too traditional for my taste, doesn't seem like he bends much established rules and plays it safe. He dresses a bit too sharp, or whatever it is I'm trying to express, but also the presentation of the videos is too rudimentary and almost infomercial. I liked him more 2-3 years ago. I haven't felt like watching him anymore.
I can't say I've ever mastered what I'm going for, but the first time I felt like I got the hang of it was because of Raphael, though, I watched some of Antonio Centeno and "Teaching Mens Fashion" years ago knowing that they obviously are showing bare beginner tutorialised videos. I'm glad I thought outside the box all that time ago which landed me where I am, definitely grateful. Just feeling like my feet are growing out of my shoes, in a manner of speaking.
@@SPNKr16 I agree about Kirby being overly conservative to the point of pompous. He does do interesting interviews and such, though. As far as Hugo is concerned, he can do no wrong. His show is superb. Enough said!
