Debbie Reynolds is so brilliant here, and Groucho Marx so gracious, humble and funny. There is a beautiful rapport between them even as they gently joust with each other. A very special moment.
Debbie's first question was asked because at that time she had already begun buying up the wardrobe and props from classic films to preserve them. Many stars didn't keep things from their films and many classic costumes and props were lost forever.
Dick Cavett was one of the best interviewers around. And his talk show was far far superior to anything done today...meaning no gimmicks or schtick, just talking and listening... allowing the guests to speak.
Hosts today are not that well-read and the guests....you wouldn't want them to just keep talking like these two....a good host would be constantly glancing at the clock, praying for a commercial break.
Three very intelligent people right there. Debbie Reynolds deep interest in Hollywood film history is hinted here. She single handedly created the largest film archive of film props all the way back to the silent era. With the intension of creating a museum. But she did a great thing by conserving them through decades that would otherwise have seen such items vanished.
M. HB More than that! Eddie Fisher left his marriage to Debbie for Elizabeth Taylor (her BFF at the time) sparking a huge scandal. Groucho knew that. It’s an unbearable moment and yet Debbie’s incredible decorum and professionalism is downright astonishing.
From Debbie Reynolds memoir about her time on the Cavett show with Groucho: "One night in 1970 we were both guests on Dick Cavett’s talk show. When he saw me, Groucho took me in his arms, dipped me backward, leaned in and kissed me on my lips. Then as we chatted, he recalled that he’d visited me once in hospital when I was ill - but he said it was only to check out a rumour that I’d just had breast implants. I hadn’t. And I certainly hadn’t been aware that he was copping a look. Anyway, after he said this, I became aware that Groucho’s face was turned towards mine whenever I spoke, but his eyes were fixed lower. It seems that he really was preoccupied with my chest"
I considered Debbie Reynolds to be as gorgeous as Hedy Lamarr. Debbie Reynolds was one, of the two. most under-utilized dramatic actresses of Hollywood. The other was Doris Day. They both could do any genre, any role, any age and it's a shame they were used so much in musical comedies.
That was odd that Groucho commented on marriage to Debbie in how a after a few years the woman looses her charm. Wow Debbie did not bat an eye. I guess by then she was over the Liz and Eddie Fisher scandal.
I get the feeling that this is the way men talked to women normally. It wasn't anything unusual to Debbie. It's only through the prism of time and a change of sensibilities that we even notice these things today.
Groucho was the sharpest wittiest comedian of the last century - no question. Great, rare talent. But he did have trouble with marriages no question about that too. I love Groucho, but I can see why he had big marriage issues. He says, after a few years the woman (or man) loses their charm, so the other naturally wanders.. Way wrong. Marriage is not about lasting "Charm". Sure attraction is a key part of it, but the foundation is commitment to family and a loyal lifestyle and a commitment before God as a sacrament. Marriage is not a "right" for anyone - the heart of marriage is a religious commitment with 2 people and God together to come together naturally, in harmony with nature, and dedicated principles about serving the other and family. If you don't believe that, save yourself alot of trouble - don't get married - it won't work for you...
Spot on, Hank. It's only controversial and repugnant to those who don't know, don't want to know and therefore won't know. Mainly, those running from God like a thief from the law. Little boys that have grown into bitter old men and never understood what it takes to be a real man. Too bad for them.
Dignified! She wouldn't leave Groucho's remark about women in marriage to go unchallenged. And it was great to hear her say, (when Groucho talked about the woman losing her charms) that the husband can become boring, over time. She said it quietly, but she said it! She didn't say anything about a man losing his charms.
Yep I was one of them kids that was crazy over the Marx Bros back in the 1970's. Funny thing my dad grew up with these films, so then we had a lot in common. I liked Harpo best. They were all great funny men even Zeppo being straight was funny.
Debbie has said that in the late 1960's, she became good friends with Elizabeth Taylor. Debbie said that although she was hurt at the time, the more she thought about it, she was grateful to Liz for stealing Eddie Fisher away. She said she told Liz this and Liz erupted with laughter - she was just as glad to be rid of Fisher. That was a bond for them that lasted until Elizabeth Taylor's death.
My mother's aunt used to work for Liz when she was married to Richard, in the 60s as a nanny. Things my mum got, but she kept all the stories to herself, visited us in the 70s and my dad visited her in the 80s when she lived close to Central Park (E 82 street). She died alone there in the 90s. :-/

Lovely to see Groucho. Arthur Marx, his son a great author of biographies. Here we see a seasoned Groucho being the man and the character.
Thanks Debbie for defending marriage!
Ahead of her time. She was right. It always benefits the man to live together. Rarely the woman.
@@m.e.d.7997 Say what!!??
That's some remark Groucho made to Debbie Reynolds about marriage. No wonder she left.
My thoughts on this are simple. If this interview had taken place in 2019, nobody would say Groucho Marx would have won this debate.
