On the FCA build quality: 1) I have a 2016 challenger hellcat also and just had my supercharger swapped out last week after the whine was starting to sound a bit suspect. As soon as I pulled out of the dealership with the new one it felt like a completely different car, even from when I first bought it. The performance with the new sc is absolutely insane. But what gets me is, when I bought the car there was no indication the supercharger was fucked. It was a tensioner issue, but still. 2) Everything with this car shakes and rattles especially if you use track mode. I hand washed the car a few months ago and noticed how loose everything was. And the water on the trunk? oh my god. 3) I had the same exact squeak/squeal at 4:15 driving me nuts for months and was finally informed it was wheel rub because I was using track mode at high speeds on the highway instead of even track like surfaces and to use sport or street instead. Haven't heard it since. 4) The vibrations have loosened the radio wiring to the point that uconnect actually changes input sources and opens the menu and other random stuff all by itself if I hit a bump. 5) Maybe it's just where I live, but the Dodge dealerships can be a bit of a hassle to deal with. I've never experienced pushback at a dealership about repairs and servicing until I bought this car. Its actually left a bad taste in my mouth and will be a major consideration when purchasing a new vehicle. It definitely is still one hell of a car, but man...
I appreciate you taking the time to comment man. It sucks to hear you have some of the same things bothering you but I’m glad to hear I’m not alone. I had no idea about the track mode and wheel rub but damn if I didn’t just see where it was rubbing today when swapping the brakes. I’m glad you mentioned something because I still hadn’t figured it out. I’ll do some testing 😈. RE: your supercharger - it sure makes me curious if my car is as powerful as it should be. How many miles are on your cat (first got it and now)?
Gas Smileage 26,000 when I bought it last april or may. And I noticed a louder and more pronounced whine around 40K in January. Took it in last week at 42,100. I'm looking at the service invoice right now and the dealership wrote: "Tested to find noise coming from super charger. Replaced super charger. Upon disassembly, found tensioner locking up when attempting to release. Also replaced tensioner for supercharger belt. Reassembled." It was covered by the powertrain warranty which is still active to 2022 with 2016 models.
Have you ever looked at the engine power in performance pages while driving and if so, did you notice a difference before and after SC replacement? I’ve been paranoid about supercharger issues so I extended the warranty through Mopar for another 3 years and 36k.
Appreciate all the time you put into this and I agree with you on every point, however my 2022 challenger SRT hellcat doesn’t squeak like yours but I totally agree with you about the squeaking. Everything else is right on point and I guess you take that all into heed when you choose this for your daily or weekend ride. Again great video. Thanks for your time and effort.
Agreed. I've owned one since Fall 2015. Original one was a stick car beautiful color scheme. I traded that for a 2016 automatic Challenger in Summer 2016. I also have a 2016 Plum Crazy Charger Hellcat. Yes, I agree about flaws, but overall I'm happy. Worked hard to pay'em off and I've no interest in anything else. That being said, they're not my daily drivers. They sit around mostly.

I’m in the same boat as you, I love the hellcat platform and couldn’t imagine trading it for anything else. It’s a bittersweet feeling to daily drive one though because I know I’m driving the value away but to me it’s priceless to wake up and experience this everyday. I could see myself trading mine for a newer year, I think they’ve ironed out a lot of kinks from the 2016s. Have you considered it?
@@GasSmileage Considered a trade? Oh, yes, all the time! However, whenever I do, I just come back to the basic 15-16 Hellcat platform being my favorite, including the basic SRT badging and original Hellcat hood.

Agreed especially the window roll up. I have only had mine for a month and went from my corvette C7 Z06 to my Redeye both daily drivers, year round with snow tires in Winter. Even after a few weeks I miss my heads up display, tight handling and cool looks but the Dodge does not bottom out or wallow in dips in the road and handles pretty well. As far as chrysler quality goes there are plenty of old chryslers on the road. The solution is I suppose to work smarter and have both a big muscle car and a sports car.
I agree, best to just have both of them in the garage lol. I only created this list because I knew it would be somewhat polarizing for growth, I loved my Hellcat even with all of these “turnoffs”
Challengers, Camaros, Mustangs nowadays are a few things north of being a bonafide raceway. With that, they have their quirks. Paying attention to a vehicle is the hallmark of a responsible driver.
I just got a 2019 hellcat charger with 1222 miles on it and I love it! But I noticed the break dust is insane and also the muffler tips turned black after 2 weeks.. and I did no touch car wash almost everyday.. now a few people that drive behind me say it reeks like gas and smells horrible.. but I just thought it’s bc it’s a hellcat.. but it might be running to lean...now I have 2400 miles on it, in a month I put a little over 1000k miles on it. I have a few problems with it so far dodge is taking care of.. but I wish they were built a little bit better
I feel your pain John, the brake dust is out of control and if your wheels are in good enough shape, I’d recommend having them taken off and ceramic coated. It will make cleaning them much easier and eventually you can swap to ceramic brake pads to help with that too. My muffler tips are completely black too at this point. I didn’t realize they were a different color until my friend said something during a wash. A thread on the Hellcat forums seems to suggest that 1 in 20 hellcats will be problem free. The other 19 will make good use of their warranty. Sucks that the quality isn’t there in all regards but it’s still beyond impressive in many ways. Drive safe and thanks for watching/commenting!
Do you know of a solution? Interestingly enough it doesn’t happen every time but a lot of times it does. It deters me from going those speeds which I guess isn’t a bad thing 🤣
Thanks for watching and commenting! Don’t forget to check out my other video about the things I love about this car. Either scat pack or hellcat, you’ll have a smile smeared across your face :)
@@devon9374 I just need to do lot's of paper work to dispose at least 2 or 3 properties. Then I'll get that Dodge Challenger Scat pack instead of the SRT Hellcat Redeye. It's going to be a long process though. Thanks! Keep safe! Ciao
In my 47 yrs of driving and working on cars, I've NEVER let the oil go past 2,500 miles, at that point it gets changed. That's just me. A low oil light on my HEMI would give me a heart attack.
I nearly ruined a good pair of underwear when I saw it - I’ve since adopted a similar interval frequency to you, every 3000 miles I’ll change it but I’m still having to add at least a qt of oil in between changes.
Now that’s SMART🫵🤩🥳 Will help your engine last longer and avoid the infamous HEMI tick. I have my Challenger 392 for 7 years with 66000k miles on it change the oil every 3000 miles use Royal Purple filter and Penzoil SRT OIL and the engine sound and perform like a CHAMP!
@@alfredoserralles5396 The inside of your engine the parts are clean showing no signs of wear, most people don't understand, the cleaner the oil, the longer the motor lasts. Its just that simple!
On my SRT the windows did rollup automatically and down but i did read that the hellcats do lack multiple features that are just unacceptable with the higher price tag
@@GasSmileage indeed they do. I am currently in the market for a c7 z06 or a hellcat and some of the set backs as far as features for the hellcat almost disappoint me. Do i need them all? NO! But at a 50-80k price range should they be available? HELL YEAH! Hellcat is my dream car but im leaning toward the Z06 lol
@@GasSmileage besides im sick of being so damn heavy and big. Its not a bad car by anymeans but the z06 is so small and its only me that i haul around so ill go z06 first and come back for a hellcat later
I feel you and totally agree. I don’t know how they came to their decision but we’re likely talking such a minimal change in build cost on their part that even one lost sale because of a missing feature just sucks from a business standpoint. Keep in mind, I’m in a 2016 model, I’d be interested to see how the more current years differ. You can’t go wrong either way, a z06 will likely be a better driving machine but the hellcat is such a visceral experience even at light throttle that I have to lean hellcat for every day driving. Although I have not daily driven a z06 yet so take that with a grain of salt
@@GasSmileage very very true the hellcat is definitely a better daily driver. I only want the z06 because im 21 and just wanna switch it up from my SRT 392 but i will definitely be coming back to the hellcat im hoping that when i do i can get a redeye charger
Not sure you got lemon. The brakes 1000 get it the window I get that...no noise yet 6k miles. 😮been a solid experience 💯 so far. Also blind spot for sure....not big enough tires for the car you missed that one...great work 😂
Oil consumption is because it uses 0w40 weight oil. That cold start takes in a bit of oil for sure. If anything I'd run 5w40 or something close. 0w40 is too think when cold.
Keep in mind 2023 is the last year for these cars you better get one while you can and keep it so you can make Xtra money in the future when you sell it, so you can live happily ever. after
I know the no-auto-up window is a pain, but it is a safety feature so no one accidently gets an arm or hand caught in the window as it goes up automatically.
I get that but what makes it less likely to happen in a charger? I’ve heard they don’t share the same feature but I could be wrong. My car now also has the auto roll up feature on all four windows
That’s why we have this magnificent Challenger forum’s with honest people with experience that could teach us lots of tricks to deal with this cars and make them ride even better than a wide body, best of all avoid paying 10k more and being able to make it the ULTIMATE MACHINE!🔥🤙💪
I have a 392 Scatpack Challenger and the easiest way to take the water out of the trunk and inside the hood is with pressure air from the car wash 😝and everything will be fine; Remember this is an old school muscle car don’t pretend it to be like a modern Mercedes or something like that! Pure💪baby!!!
Was on the fence about getting one. But I think I'll stick with my economy car and my fast bikes for toys. This thing is a little too much in all the wrong areas, and not enough where it counts in my opinion.
Find a way to test drive one if you haven’t already - I know this video highlights some turn offs but it’s truly a special vehicle. I’m with you though, the fast bikes are where my heart is at.
Cant stand ceramic brake pads, they just don't stop that good. Use HAWK race pads or high performance Street pads, Low dusting. I also use the HAWK pads for towing on pickup trucks. I've never found a pad better then HAWK. Semi Slick tires work great in the corners, with at least 47 psi with a tire rating at 51 PSI. The NASCAR boys are using 50 psi on their outside tires for many years and they would like to use more if only they were allowed to. 36 PSI in the corners is just not going to work.
I heard that using the Hellcat in a daily basis is kind of annoying in terms of maneuvering due to: 1. The weight 2. It is hard control when maneuvering So my question is. Can you drive it like you drive Mustang Shelby for example or it needs super extra focus to control?
I’ve never driven a Shelby but the hellcat will surprise you in a good way when you drive it. Definitely don’t need extra focus unless you’re pushing hard. The weight is handled extremely well and the only time you’ll notice it is in corners. The varying suspension modes give you the ability to modify how stiff you like your ride which helps a lot but I don’t think it would drive like a Shelby in terms of maneuvering.
Honestly the blind spots never bothered me at all. Get the driver convenience package for extra assurance, and adjust your mirrors properly. If you can see the side of your car in the mirror without leaning, your mirrors are not adjusted correctly. The one majoy issue is y-shaped intersections, where you're coming down the small arm of the y, have to stop, and merge onto the long arm of the y. (the intersection has a sharp angle and you're turning across two lanes following the obtuse angle) The solution is simple though. Turn against the turn; turn as though you're making a right instead of a left so your car is more perpendicular to the road you are merging onto, and you'll be able to see just fine. Do not take those turns without angling your car though, or you'll be pulling out with a prayer lol. Apart from those intersections explicitly I've daily driven my SXT for over a year and a half and never run into issues with blind spots. Course my previous car was a 2011 malibu and they had some pretty big rear pillars too, so maybe I am just used to using my mirrors.
Definitely the Pirellies. Last time I had a good set of Pirellies was in 94 on my Fox Chasis mustang 5.0 coupe. Since then they've gone to shite in my opinion. I have Firestone Firehawk Indy's on mine for the summer and BF Goodriches for the winter. 305s in the rear and 275s up front.
The window roll up pissed me off with both my Yellow Jacket and Hellcat Challengers because both of my SRT8 Chargers and the current Chargers have auto up and down...FCA/Stellantis why?!
I think it’s something related to a safety concern but I didn’t find much information about it further than that. The more I think about it the more it stumps me
Imagine having a supercharged 700hp $70,000+ car, not changing the oil after 6,000+ miles, and wondering why I have oil consumption... lmaoooo it’s not just the thinner oil🤦♂️
Imagine having a supercharged 700hp car with a factory power train warranty lasting 60,000 miles that you paid no where close to $70,000 for. I changed the oil just before 6k and if following the owners manual results in a catastrophic failure of their engine, they replace it under warranty. I’m not saying that waiting that long is a good idea and that I’ll be doing that again but I wouldn’t expect following the operating manual would cause any issues or have a RUclips hellcat expert pop up. Manual doesn’t say 8000, it says don’t exceed 6000 or 6 months, which ever comes first. Neither of which was exceeded. The problem is hundreds of miles before 6k and four months after last change, the engine threw a code for low oil pressure. Stop commenting like you have any idea what you’re saying. Great job at offering zero value 👌🏽
@@GasSmileage and none of what you said disproves my point besides the 6,000 mile manual change but ok🤣🤣 I think you’re the one who doesn’t know what tf they’re talking about
Oil in the hellcat was just changed again at 31348 and only 2.5 qts came out, last change was at dealer at 28347. 2.5 out of 7 on 3000k miles, I’m sure it’s just me not knowing what I’m talking about though. Unless every dealership who changed the oil in this car was as incompetent as you, I think this engine has an issue. I’ve been wrong before though so don’t take some ass with a small YT channel too seriously.
@@BossMan-vl5cd just find a skill set that’s in demand and leverage it to your benefit, you’ll be in a hellcat in no time. The 392 is a badass motor but a hellcat pulling up next to you will ruin your day lol.
Those zr1s are badass and retain their value pretty well. I’d love to get my hands on a c6 or c7 but for the price, hellcat is best bang for your buck imo
12. Definitely not a “Gray Man” vehicle. If you’re like me, people are always talking to me about it... chicks working the Starbucks window, I always have dudes asking about it in parking lots, even had an older lady complement the car at the gas station!
The oil consumption is worse than I thought, I’ll be making an update vid on it soon but don’t worry, mine rattles and vibrates a decent amount too - what year is yours?
you should check your oil in any viechle when you fill up, don't forget he's doing a review on a high performance viechle, not a Toyota Camry, and remember you can purchase this car with no interior, basically your purchasing a car that is ment for a track or quarter mile, and ya its roughly 100 thousand dollars, but it's not a lambo, farari, McLaren etc , so honestly to be that picky is a bit extreme.
I researched topics around the hellcat that would get search traffic and cause the channel to grow organically. When I create a list of 11 things I hate, it’s for content and not because I genuinely focus on these minor annoyances - I honestly dislike carrying any negative view points but it’s amazing to see how the general public responds to the two videos - turn offs and turn ons. It’s night and day. 5x more views and engagement around negativity.
Weight is not something I would think of driving a hellcat daily. Gas Gas and more gas. Insurance, tires, brakes, clutch if you have a manual, oil changes
I figured maintenance costs whether it’s for brakes, insurance, gas, tires, etc would be a turn off no matter what vehicle you’re driving. Of course some of these costs are amplified with the hellcat but I tried to come up with a more unique list of annoyances based on my experiences. The saying ignorance is bliss holds very true when driving a hellcat as a daily. To think of the individual costs constantly while driving around would take away from the enjoyment. I hope I’m wrong about electric vehicles but I’m investing in the experience of what could be a dying breed of vehicles. Gas guzzling V8s with a supercharger on top from the factory, I’m willing to work a bit harder in the now to enjoy that. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Everyone that owns a Hellcat #1 is gas 6 to 8 mpg city and that's Premium 93 octane ...and you skipped it completely? And we don't buy them for gas mileage.....lol "it's smiles per mile " Priceless!❤😊
I’ve read and heard different things regarding oil changes. The owners manual says 6k is towards the far end of their recommendation. I can see why some would argue that for a super charged v8 you should change more frequently but I guess I’m just a goof too. I’ll be changing myself every 4k or so now to see.
I agree with brake dust, do you not have blind spot monitoring (mine does)? I have a manual Hellcat challenger and I don’t have these issues. Way to try to educate people..peace.
Hey Patrick, mine does have blindspot monitoring but I’ve noticed on more than one occasion it not alerting. I often wish I had a manual transmission and could see myself trading for one. Can’t beat the feeling of shifting gears. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
I feel any used Hellcat is going to be driven hard unless you find someone who garage kept/babied it. In this regard, I’d shop private owner and look for an older gentleman lol. I’ve actually uncovered a few different issues since my last upload and will be uploading a video on that soon. I purchased the Mopar Max Care warranty which extends basic and power train warranties and is paid monthly like insurance. I would not recommend getting a used hellcat that is not covered under warranty based on my experience so far, at least a 2016. Just my 2 cents, let me know if you pull the trigger!
blind spots are a big thing, mustang has better visibility, ive also driven a camaro and it had decent visibility but ive heard camaro has poor visibility as well(ive daily driven a mustang challenger and have driven multiple camaros).
At the end of the day, it's about what we love because we can get used to damn near anything but there is no doubt that some are better than others in terms of visibility. I haven't been in a mustang yet, how'd you like it as a daily?
Compared to other dodge vehicles I’ve driven it’s not the worst but I do agree it could be better. A charger I drove for a rental had a backup camera and it felt delayed and almost looked distorted because every time I’d back up with it I ended up crooked. Compared to that, the Hellcat’s backup camera is amazing but I still prefer to use mirrors in any regard
I don’t get how the way is a turn off isn’t that really why you want it because in my eyes, how cats are really good for taking slow, kind of drift corners, and then going really fast in the streets like good for drifting and burnouts and then going in a straight line
Oil consumption is probably due to the low tolerances in the engine. My 2000 Toyota 4.7 liter V8 with 173,000 miles burns zero oil. Not a drop in 10,000 miles which is when I change my 5w-30 oil. Toyota builds engines like Swiss watches. That Fiat Chrysler motor just doesn't have the build quality.
Excellent video dude, I mean the part about the oil I totally get. I really wouldn’t go a mile over 3,000 without changing the oil or I’d expect some to be burned in a 700hp engine that’s daily driven. How’s it holding up so far? I really want to pull the trigger on one
Thanks Hunter, I appreciate that. Yeah lesson learned, I’ll be changing it more frequently in the future and myself so I can monitor exactly how much comes out and goes in. Warranty has saved me from some big repairs so far so keep that in mind if going for an older model hellcat. You can always extend the warranty through mopar. I say get one but just make sure you cover yourself with a warranty. It does feel well built all things considered but if you ever examine it on a lift you’ll see a lot of areas that don’t look very strong. My driveshaft was just replaced under warranty.
@@GasSmileage I gotcha, thanks I was thinking the same thing about the warranty. Just gotta have one with something like that hellcat, it’s clean man. Looking forward to future vids of it 🙌🏻
I’ve never driven an r/t but I’d assume the power of the hellcat is a major factor. When comparing driveshafts with my friend’s Miata, the Hellcat’s was no larger. I agree Codi but that being said, a used Hellcat with a warranty can be found for 44-52k, I think if someone else takes the haircut on the sticker price, there’s pretty great value to be had in the used market. They also keep their value pretty well when bought used all things considered but I really wish they hadn’t chosen cheaper parts in some areas.
@@GasSmileage Full disclosure. I have a 2018 HC Widebody I bought used for $56,500 with 4,500 miles (almost 9k now). Sticker was 80k. I don't sit in the back and it is rare when someone does. Just annoys the crap out of me knowing that it is cheap hard plastic there.

I love how you didn’t mention Gas ⛽️ 😂
I’m averaging 6.3 MPG right now but Keeping it real 🤷🏽♂️

The squeak is from the window. Since there is no top part to the door, the air is able to get between the rubber seal.
Do you know of a solution? Interestingly enough it doesn’t happen every time but a lot of times it does. It deters me from going those speeds which I guess isn’t a bad thing 🤣
Yea, I agree with the cup holders and windows.
That being said, I'll save up for a Challenger Scat pack then. Thanks for the head's up Sir! Keep safe & drive safely!

@@GasSmileage HAHAHA! The fun factor overrides the oil consumption issue, with what gas cost to drive these, a little extra for oil is no problem!
Now that’s SMART🫵🤩🥳
Will help your engine last longer and avoid the infamous HEMI tick. I have my Challenger 392 for 7 years with 66000k miles on it change the oil every 3000 miles use Royal Purple filter and Penzoil SRT OIL and the engine sound and perform like a CHAMP!

I’ve always wanted a charger, I personally think they are a step above the challenger in a few ways
On my SRT the windows did rollup automatically and down but i did read that the hellcats do lack multiple features that are just unacceptable with the higher price tag
Interesting, it almost seems as if they kept the auto roll down for the chargers only. Dodge has its quirks for sure
Keep in mind 2023 is the last year for these cars you better get one while you can and keep it so you can make Xtra money in the future when you sell it, so you can live happily ever. after

Re oil
You may want to consider super capacity filters. As well install a magnet pan plug!
Thank you, I appreciate the heads up. I’ll look into these!
Thats why id get the newer ones theyve fixed the glitches and worked out the wide body setup that seems nescessary at this point

12) Everyone else shows up in the rear view mirror.
13) Snaps spine when I punch it.
14) Bursts into flames at high speed
:D
I heard that using the Hellcat in a daily basis is kind of annoying in terms of maneuvering due to:
1. The weight
2. It is hard control when maneuvering
So my question is.
The varying suspension modes give you the ability to modify how stiff you like your ride which helps a lot but I don’t think it would drive like a Shelby in terms of maneuvering.
u forgot manual passenger seat as well should add it up :) great video
I came from an SXT too so I was also used to the blind spots but as with anything, just takes some time to adjust!
Do a driving POV 🔥‼️

The window roll up pissed me off with both my Yellow Jacket and Hellcat Challengers because both of my SRT8 Chargers and the current Chargers have auto up and down...FCA/Stellantis why?!

Imagine having a supercharged 700hp $70,000+ car, not changing the oil after 6,000+ miles, and wondering why I have oil consumption... lmaoooo it’s not just the thinner oil🤦♂️
Yea the manual says 8,000 or every 6 months but would you rather be paying for an engine or a $40 oil change every 4-5k?
Great job at offering zero value 👌🏽

you should check your oil in any viechle when you fill up, don't forget he's doing a review on a high performance viechle, not a Toyota Camry, and remember you can purchase this car with no interior, basically your purchasing a car that is ment for a track or quarter mile, and ya its roughly 100 thousand dollars, but it's not a lambo, farari, McLaren etc , so honestly to be that picky is a bit extreme.
Gas
Gas and more gas.

That’s just air pushing through the window at high speeds my 392 did the same thing it’s not just hellcats
16000 miles to 22000 miles for an oil change, isn’t that normal?? Or am I just a goof
I’ve read and heard different things regarding oil changes. The owners manual says 6k is towards the far end of their recommendation. I can see why some would argue that for a super charged v8 you should change more frequently but I guess I’m just a goof too. I’ll be changing myself every 4k or so now to see.
I have a 2020 scatpack and the pair definitely doesn’t hold up the best
I agree with brake dust, do you not have blind spot monitoring (mine does)? I have a manual Hellcat challenger and I don’t have these issues. Way to try to educate people..peace.
Hey Patrick, mine does have blindspot monitoring but I’ve noticed on more than one occasion it not alerting.

You forgot the horrible backup camera

Soft padded interior in front. Hard plastic in back. I can see that maybe for the base model, but for a $70,000 plus car? Cheap.
I agree Codi but that being said, a used Hellcat with a warranty can be found for 44-52k, I think if someone else takes the haircut on the sticker price, there’s pretty great value to be had in the used market.
