loooooord how many sentence endings for expressing suprise does korean even have, i lost track and now i'm confused lol
They get suprise tooo many times!!
Thats how I feel about the numerous ways to say "because"
I am in the intermediate level and from I was a beginner, there are already 160+ (including their dictionary and conjugated forms and levels of respect)
In korean they have a long list of 'because" grammar too....super confused.

“and, that surprises me!” haha should just have that as a single soundbite to replay every time these forms come up…

감사합니다! So basically 더니 is a combination of both:
- the 데 form but with personal experience and emphasizes that it's unexpected or surprising
- the 서 / 니까 form with personal experience and more emphasis toward the result.
Is it even more emphatic than 서 for the cause and effect ? Or if it's your own experience it's more common to use 더니
It has a bit more emphasis, since it's for things that are surprising or unexpected.

i am so confused now... how can 더니 mean both a contrast with surprise AND a causal connection... those things are two TOTALLY different meanings...they are kind of contrary too

In your wedding example, why do you use “가고 싶다고 하더니” instead of “가고 싶다고 했더니” even though the person said it in the past? Thanks for your help as always
You might want to watch the full un-edited live stream where I talk about how to use the tenses for ~더니. There are two different uses for it, and when it's used with the past tense it's usually only in the 1st person or quoting someone.

So 더라고요 is similar to 는군요 in that you are realizing something?

They're technically different as for their usage but similar in that both means you realize something.
With 더라고(요) you're conveying what you've thought or found out from your past experience. e.g. That restaurant was pretty good. 괜찮더라/ I think he is nice.(He showed quite good manners.)좋더라
구나(or군요) is like you said, used when you find things out at the moment. e.g. (Since there's a queue)Oh, this place is famous. 인기 많구나
can 더니 can be also translated as "and because of that"?
If it fits that usage in that sentence, then sure :)

By the way is there a difference between 됐어요 and 됬어요
됐어요 is the correct spelling.
