- Episode Number 3 of Truck History is here! This time, it's all about the Freightliner Conventional Truck! As Freightliner moves more and more towards what many consider a more "aero-truck" design, we decided we would take a trip down memory lane and revisit the history of the flagship Freightliner model. Enjoy!

I still love & miss my 1st truck I owned...2000 Freightliner Classic XL Flattop...60 in Sleeper, 475 Cat, 13spd, Jakes, Full Aluminum.
I remember actually crying when I sold it to buy my next truck...I felt like I lost a child!!!
That Flattop looked so good pulling a chemical tank when she was really cleaned up!!!
Much love from Mobile Alabama.
Thank you!! We’d love to see some pictures of it if you have them!
Those FLC 120 s were beautiful trucks. Don't see enough of them anymore.
The 1980s FLC is my favorite truck. Its a shame the classics were discontinued. I hate the new trucks.
We agree! We’d love to see them make a great owner/op truck again one day!
Agree
I got a 1988 classic
The Coronado isn't that bad a truck where looks are considered. Would look better if Freightliner would have given them the breather cans like the classic KW and Pete trucks have.
My dad drove those for Mobil,, back in the 70's they used them for awhile, I remember the 1st ones with single headlights & then the new nes with duals
You didn't start early enough....
CF bought and redesigned/rebuilt other brands of trucks for many years. None of the manufacturers made what they needed. (My great grandfather, Jack Snead Sr. Worked in the CF shop, reengineering trucks to meet their needs. Eventually, CF started building their own trucks, simply called "Freightways". Eventually others wanted their trucks, so Freightliner came to be.
Following his father's footsteps, my great uncle, Jack Snead Jr. Also worked for CF, eventually becoming CEO of CF....
Good video!!!
I Love the first truck!!! "The Goose"😎 that's what I've been called most of my life 😎
Yeah I always felt theae videos were missing something and honestly the way they explained it was messy and left me confused.
I bought a Freightliner at a farm auction in '09 and didn't think much about it, just needed something to pull a hopper bottom, had a lot of new parts and good tires on it, was $5100 dollars and I thought I spent way to much, I still have it, wouldn't sell it if I had to, best truck ever, 86 FLC with set back front axle, 350BC and a 13, 3:55 rears, drives excellent and just makes me smile every time I drive it
XL classic has to this day been the best looking truck ever produced
when i was a kid my dad bought a new 1982 FLC with a 400 big cam and it was one bad mother!
Cabovers rule in my book, but I really do like the early conventionals...gotta love those long hoods. Porter Dude of Ohio.
No love for the Argosy? I was hoping JB Hunt would keep them alive back in the day.
I've wanted to spend some time in an Argosy but when I had the chance to go to a company that had them they didn't have them anymore. Oh, well...
The Freightliner FLC, Freightliner FLD-Classic, Freightliner FLD-Classic XL, and Freightliner FLD-Coronado are my favorites from this company but I also like the Freightliner FLD-120, Freightliner Century Class, and Freightliner Columbia too!
Oh my childhood i grew up in my grandfathers 1999 freightliner classic xl flattop it was a beautiful truck till he sold it my goal one day is to find that truck and restore it love freightliners and these videos
Thank you! Glad we could bring back some nostalgia!
Jack's Chrome Shop Thank you 😊!!
I remember back when my dad started driving gas tankers back in 99, 2000 or 2001 his first ride was a Freightliner of that era. Cummins with a 9 or 10 speed. That's why Freightliner is my favorite brand just because it's what my old man started driving on.
What about the new Coronado look when they crossed it with the fld classic look?
Doesn't look quite right without the breather cans on the sides in my oppinion but they do look better than their streamlined sisters.
Love the history videos. Thank you to the Jack’s chrome crew for another great video!
Great video!
It was not federal regulations that limited length, it was state regulations that limited length. During deregulation, federal regulations forced states to accept trucks without length limits on the national network and a certain distance away in order to make deliveries.
Mainly Oregon and California.... But yes, it was the states regulations.
I like your videos. Your educational style of narration and image synchronicity is cool and makes it interesting.
Greg P. Thanks Greg we really appreciate that!
I am a big fan of freight liner trucks!
Awesome video 👍. Very informative.
Thank you!!
The Goose is a badass truck. Love FLD and FLCs.
i did always love the cabover engine trucks
When you wreck a cabover you're definitely the first one to know about it😉
😂😂😂
Always the first one there!!!!
Freightlamer actually built a conventional as early as 1942, in a limited amount. Not sure how many or for how long they built these, but they looked like they were thrown together like the ones they build now.
I was just about to comment that they had one. I've seen it and was curious as to why it was left out of these videos.
I put 10s of thousands of miles in the passenger seat & bunk of Dad's '86 Setback Front Axle tractor, which was the New England Show Truck winner of that year. Beautiful Cream White with Blue stripe package, 24.5s, 425 Cat, 13spd, sure miss that truck.
Thank you for sharing! Love hearing about old freight liners!
You forgot "Christmas comes to Willow Creek" our company had the first white freightliner conventional built in the burnaby BC plant (which Daimler later closed as another NAFTA casualty)
The consolidated freight terminal you guys show is in Billings Montana.
I work there, but now it's XPO logistics
Awesome! You’re a part of history!
Some years back (1990's), I looked into purchasing a Freightliner. In speaking to several owners, I found out that the steps they took to achieve fuel mileage cost them in the overall durability. They were good looking trucks though.
Classic was introduced in 1991 actually. And the Classic XL in 1993.
I still love the Coronado
The cab ergonomics of the Freightliner cascade is very comfortable. I can't speak to the reliability of the new DD13/15 series. I've only been in them as rentals. started in a 1994 fld with a series 60
I love the flc and fld. What about the century class, columbia, coronado, and m2-112 and 122 sd
No mention of the Freightliner Century/Columbia trucks? Interesting...
Conventional series ends with the classic. We will do a video on Century/Columbia/Coronado soon!
I drove a 1980 I liked it
Can you do one of these about International's 9000 series?
Davrin 0114 yes we are doing one on international harvester the company and also the newer international trucks.
What about the coronano.thats my favorite. Especially the RV.6 axial...
Fld120 is my favorite
My dad has a fld 120
Very cool! Got any pics?
My grandpa owned 9 FLD120’s and a old FLA. he ran a grain trucking company
If you look at all the work provided trucks now they are Freightliner, seriously guys look it's crazy
And it's probably all Cascadia's
More and more heavy duty vocational trucks, getting back to their roots😎
With the fall of the FLD, came the rise of the Coronado.
Coronado is dead.
No mention of the freightliner coronado?
i think once freightliner released the crapcadia aka cascadia that when freightliner turned on there own history.
I'm guessing retards make their own truck nicknames?
Hated the Cascadia,, we had 1/2 Prostars & 1/2 Cascadias. Take a Prostar anyday
I always thought the FLC were the aerodynamic ones that went on to be the Columbias and Cascadias while the FLDs eventually became the Coronado. Seems I've been wrong these past several years...
FreightShaker.
I really appreciate showing a REAL truck (Peterbilt) at the end of the video.
Do Ford, and GMC,
I have a 1993 FLD back home
Very nice! Send us pictures!
Can you do one on the ford/sterling line of trucks
Yes we will!!
Yes I do like this video freightliner there’s no other truck did I care to drive believe me.
Do brockway
Good idea!
4:26 was Freightliner coping Peterbilt when it came to that sleeper that truck had? Cause If you think about it the sleeper looks similar to the Peterbilt one
That's because the video editor goofed and put a 64" box sleeper made by able body and used by all the manufacturers is at the 4:26 mark, the 70" integrated sleeper is shown at the 4:21 mark.
The reason it looks the same is due to it being an able body sleeper, which was also used by Pete. The first standup Pete used was also an able body sleeper.
I assume Pete bought the rights to that sleep which became the unibilt sleeper style.
Trust me, they look the same but are far from it. Able was a cheaply made sleeper. Well at least the ones Freightliner got were.
New Freightliner are junk nothing but Priuses give me an old FLD or XL classic
I prefer comfort
Yes
Forgot to mention the early convential's that Freightliner made that were "branded", the FLA and FLB. I think the real first conventional were the "no-name" conventionals built in around the late 40's. At the time most of Freightliner's were "assembled" and not actually built by Freightliner. It's confusing because when Daimler bought Freightiner they reused the FLA and FLB model names. If it's a real freightliner the FLA and FLB were conventionals. If they were later models built under Daimler's ownership then they are cabovers. I've owned all 3 original models of Freightliner conventionals at one point or another. When CF still owned Freightliner they built good trucks. Personally I think the FLD, which used a LOT of holdover parts from the CF designed FLC, were the last good truck they built. RIP CF & Freightliner.
You forget Terminator and 2000 cabover argosy truck and FLB
Is consolidated freight now called central freight
CF bought out a lot of trucking companies over the years, from what I understand, the bankruptcy shut down CF, but did not stop any of the other old names from coming back... "Conway" was one of the earlier companies CF bought, they came back to life after the bankruptcy, but I don't know if they are still in operation....
Gosselin Farms Ed Gosselin conway is still in business in the north east
@@patrickcoyne1292 cool!! I just haven't seen any of them for a while.. I know they had a terminal in Ontario Oregon, maybe one in Portland too... I know of the one in Ontario because we occasionally get parts shipped from Nyssa, so Conway being close, would be the carrier.
I hate the new trucks.
Talking about the FLD to showing a few pics of the Cascadia. No mention of the Century. That's the "history" of Freightliner conventionals, huh?
Can't wait for the Semi truck company that leap frogs Tesla Motors and builds the for wireless electric device or a sound engine that burns anything or even uses wind power
I have owned several freightliners did not like any of them they were freight shakers for a reason while i like some chrome it dam shure wont get you home
Freightshacker nickname come from its bounces an traddles. All rode terrible an shook apart
"Back to when" :13
Back to the 70s!!
You forgot the Coronado and Columbia
We don’t consider those conventional owner operator trucks. Good trucks though!
@@jackschromeshop8296 not even the Coronado?
1dollar dn is what took market. Any one could buy one
Great video thanks for the time you put in to this White ruined every company the they got involved with have a great day be safe.
YOU COMPLETELY FORGOT THE CORONADO!
Not to mention the century, Columbia, flip, etc etc
Don’t consider them in the same class as the Classic, FLD, and FLC.
@@jackschromeshop8296 the Coronado was built as an O/O truck even though it was century class based. Also almost all of the original style were gliders, another great thing as an O/O
Know what the difference between a Freightliner and a Jehovah's witness is?
You can close the door on a Jehovah's witness.
Another cool video, thanks!
And if it's an old Freightliner with a dribbletroit, slam your hand in the door, you'll have a better day 😎
Lol!
i guess that the first Freightliners were ok, but they sure do suck ass today. i would rather drive a Pete with 460,000 on it as a dump truck than a Freightshaker with 64 miles on it. a safer truck too.
You forgot the coranodo
And the Columbia
This video don't have anything on the freightliner coronado.
Don't make em like they used to
Your history is not quite correct. Freightliner built their first conventionals around the mid 1960’s but there were very few. Less than a dozen. I know where 4 of them are/were near where I live. I don’t remember their exact history but they were the property of Consolidated Freightways. They might have been used as pushers on Donner Summit but I just don’t remember. They belonged to a single trucking company when I last saw them 20 years ago. I don’t know if they still survive today. I’ll have to take a road trip this spring. I do have pictures of them somewhere in my collection.
no need to mention the coronado columbia or such trucks the cascadia is enough to know freightliner is ruined
What’s a dime ler
It’s Daimler
Pronounced
Day-m ler
Different pronunciation over here mate
The Colombia was one of the worst trucks I ever drove
You forgot to say that the company moved to Mexico and now you pay for what get...💩
Nuckin Futs Looney pay more for other brands that are even more crappy! Pete’s are crap too now days!
These new Aero trucks remind me of those junk VOLVOs they really don't make a real truck anymore
Aero truck = euro trash.
Steve Schultz restored tractor s
Freightliner used to be a great truck back in the day now they are pure crap even the century class were good trucks but again... today they absolutely suck
