The battle was over when the bells were rung, nobody would even care if she just went to the red keep and burned it to the ground. The whole reason why the mad king was killed was because he said 'burn them all'

So my opinion on this, is that because of our experience with war this day and age, we are unfortunately used to innocent civilians die, however in the time of Game of Thrones, battles were typically fought amongst the soldiers on a battle field. Killing that many innocent, the way Daenayrys did, is not the norm. Also, once they surrendered, they do not continue to kill. The enemy becomes prisoners. Also, when Arya says thank you to the hound, I think you took it as for jus in that moment, but I’m pretty sure, that thank you was for everything he thought her and keeping her alive all that time.

  • @1243fad

People in the comments are gonna tell you that this has been coming for a while. But the truth of the matter is the writers of the season, said themselves, if the events that occurred in season 8 hadn’t happened then Dany never would’ve burned all those innocents. So all those comments about you should’ve seen this coming they have no merit.
Had the seasons been longer, and they kept going. This plot line would’ve made sense, but ultimately they rushed this final season and destroyed a lot of storylines that needed to be told.
Even the actress Emilia Clarke herself said she was completely suprised at the turn of the character shows the major flaw of the showrunners: your actors breath life into the characters. You can’t have a real thread or seed of a story arc and NOT tell the actor where it’s headed if that turn is something inside the character and effects her choices. You have to trust them. That’s why the “Mad Queen” doesn’t hold water with us, because it was never created by the person embodying the role.

The fact that you have to rewatch the show again to realize that Dany is "bad" , shows that the end was badly written because everyone was shocked when this episode came out. Plus seeing the show again knowing that she's going to burn innocent people will make every sentence every action interpreted in light of what she's done. So it's biased.
She could be tough but she never attacked the people or the innocents. Throughout the show people kill each other to avenge their family without thinking once of the people. Arya kills only for revenge, Robb went to war to avenge his family not for the people , sansa was going to war to take backher house and she always wanted to become a Queen but Daenerys who wants to recover her throne ( house ) is bad ? She killed her ennemies like others. Daenerys, Jon and Varys were the only ones in the show who cared about people. Daenerys and Jon they are the only ones who have saved people just to save people. Yes Jon is a Saint but Daenerys was a good woman. She was better than Sansa, Arya, Cathlyn, Cersei, Stannis, Robb. In the whole series Daenerys is the only one who sacrificed everything to save people even in Westeros. The show has to explain us why she became crazy... This is just a bad writing

I think the difference is, it's not that they or any of us didn't see it coming. We honestly ALL did, the problem is we got there in 2 episodes. Dany needed at the bare minumum at least one more season to see her naturally go to full dark and angry. Just 3 episodes prior to this she literally sacrificed her potential life, her dragons AND her soilders meaning all her cards left to play and her advantage to try to save Westeros/the North (who weren't even accepting of her nor seemed grateful after the fact) and all of it's people even her own enemies. So to go from her risking everything to protect everyone to then burning innocent people in 3 epsiodes literally has zero logic. Same logic as Cersei begging for her life and dying under a pile of rocks. Same Cersei who drank wine and smirked as she blew up the sept?? The most ruthless, and unforgiving character in Westeros running away in cowardice? Sorry completely out of character. Same as with Tyrion being completely out of character and making Dany out to be the ultimate villian and disregarding the fact that Dany herself gave him multiple chances when he committed treason and arguably got her best friend killed.
Dany turning Mad Queen in the same season with in the timeframe she did was not plausible for the majority of us. They unraveled pretty much all of the major characters in this last season to rush the final season. So yes, we always saw that she had this in her, it was no surprise but not the way it happened and that's why that whole scene was a joke to most of us and unbelievably unrealistic and out of character to the point where me and everyone else I knew said "eh f%$k it, burn them all" despite how messed up it was.

Season 5 is when they departed heavily from the books to the point where they couldn't fix it, and they deliberately left out tons of material that permanently changed the direction and shortened the lifespan of the show. Also, they actually did take extra time to make Season 7 and 8 but they decided early on that they wanted to make the seasons shorter. HBO wanted 10 seasons, George wanted upwards of 13 seasons. The show runners had other plans though and clearly wanted it over as soon as possible so they could move on to their Star Wars project. After the backlash that GoT received because of it's sloppy, rushed, and frankly terrible ending, they lost their Star Wars gig and haven't really done anything of note since.

Imo I think they did a fine job on s06 despite the fact they had to wing some things, mainly because of how well-written Cersei was, her impeccable acting and her plot in general. But it all goes down from there plot-wise and the main reason is hurrying to finish it. Like a wise man once said, you can't rush genius. Martin book writing was nothing short of genius, to try and change that perfect pace after 5-6 seasons was nothing short of a disservice both to the writer but also to us, the viewers.

The whole point was that Dany was supposed to be better/kinder/less cruel than the power mad rulers who came before her. That her journey to the top had taught her to respect perspectives and respond in kind. Especially since she's been constantly and conscientiously been counciled against the tyranny she's already witnessed. That's why her heel turn makes it a commentary on human nature itself. And, perhaps, it's about how putting women in charge of nuclear weapons like a giant fire-breathing dragon (among other things) wouldn't really change how the world has been working as a patriarchy for lo these many millennia. See: Cersei.
I still didn't enjoy the execution of the story ending (as a storyteller, I think it could've been done better; for instance her other dragon being murked over the King's Landing attack, as opposed to at sea by Euron's hand) would have been a more convincing cause for Dany to turn vengeful on a blind dime, but...
The story was ALWAYS meant to end this way. One way or another. If that makes any sense.

to anyone saying this was justifiable/hinted throughout the series; it wasn't.
GRRM said dany is one of the main heroines of the novels. he wrote her to be one of the good guys (with all her flaws and greyness, just like every other character from ASOIAF. cause that's the essence of the novels) since day 1.
it was never hinted in the books, but it seems to me that since season 4 all the showrunners cared about was fan service and to make them look for for the audience.
tyrion was supposed to be a villain, just like in the books, but i guess the writers didn't want to make that turn on their fav character. jon was supposed to be complex, grey and ambitious, instead they turn him into that boring wooden plank.
GRRM said that he wrote about all those characters, but he always knew it was about "those two" and that's Jon and Daenerys, the song of ice and fire.
the signs weren't there and for anyone who disagrees, you don't understand her character and you weren't paying attention. there's a big big difference between killing slave masters and rapists than slaughtering thousands of innocent people who were always her goal to defend. and for those questioning her methods:
"I never held much with slavery […]. You can’t just go… usin’ another kind of people, like they wasn’t people at all. Know what I mean? Got to end, sooner or later. Better if it ends peaceful, but it’s got to end even if it has to be with fire and blood" - GRRM
i could bring hundreds of quotes from dany about that, that were completely ignored by the showrunners while adapting dany's character.
"Daenerys is one of the main 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐞 of the novel, and 𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐞𝐫.” - GRRM’s Mir Fantastiki interview
"well of course the two outlying ones - the things that are going on north of the wall and Daenerys Targaryen on the other continent with her dragons are of course the ice and fire of the title a song of ice and fire" - GRRM
“I mean… Fire is love, fire is passion, fire is sexual ardor and all of these things. Ice is betrayal, ice is revenge, ice is… you know, that kind of cold inhumanity and all that stuff is being played out in the books" - GRRM
the whole idea of a mad queen is something that GRRM is writting and building up for dany's character to go completely against it. cersei is already the mad queen in the books and she's written as a parallel to Dany's arc. dany becoming the mad queen is not only out of character, it's pointless, it doesn't make sense and it is misogynist

They ignored the entite messaging of the series about the futility of chasing power and thinking a savior can change the autocratic system. They rang the bell. Dany had won. She could have captured Cersei and burned her like she did everyone else. She didnt have to burn them all. She said she wanted to break the wheel, but she just became just like every other house. Who she gonna rule over? She burned them all.

Loved their reactions from season 1 to around 7-ish, but them, especially Mair, ridiculing people in the comments who were calling out Dany is the moment I tuned out of their reactions to this show. Won't even watch this one. Based off the comments, I already know the supported everything Dany did, even though they hypocritically called out Stannis for doing things the way he did, which was really bad, but not even in the level of burning innocent civilians including babies. I don't think I'm gonna watch their reaction to House of the Dragon, I already know they'd just be hypocritical and be very biased on one side without seeing other perspectives, and that to me is annoying, especially when Mair goes in front of the camera as if to ridicule people with different opinons.

It all goes back to what Sam told Jon, that he is willing to give up his claim for the sake of he realm, is Dany willing to do the same? Dany burned all those innocent people for the sake of her birth right. Jon has the same birth right, even greater, but if given the choice between being King and murdering innocent people, he'd choose to go back to being a no name bastard. That's why we've been calling Daenerys out. It's not that we do not understand her motivations. Of course we do. But she has wrecked so many lives, not just in King's Landing, but also in Esos - by freeing the slaves overnight, by force, and then leaving them, so of course she deserves to be called out.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. So just because someone has good intentions doesn't mean they shouldn't be called out when the way they're doing things is just dumb and bad.

    • @Freya1412
      @Freya1412 Год назад +4

Nope, he could have married her anyway even in the North with that relation. Sansa could marry Robin and that's first cousins. Uncle to niece marriage has happened in Northern highborn families. However westeros does have unwritten rules about how close the relation can be, for example first cousins shouldn't marry but first cousins thrice removed or third cousins can, no one cares ( Tywin married his first cousin )) as long as it's not immediate family like a sibling or parent. Jon was tired by this point. He probably wanted to mgtow the rest of his days in peace. He was not turned off by the knowledge Dany was his aunt. In fact he didn't care because like you said he grew up in the North and they had no familial relationship between them except finding out he was a secret Targaryen as adults.

honestly tyrion was a garbage hand to daenerys. He kept thinking about his family first. When his family very much cersei was willing to throw him under the bus again, and again, and again. and Varys dunno why he was shocked, "if you ever betray me I'll burn you alive" "I'd expect nothing less from the mother of dragons." Like they all wanted Jon to be king because he had the luck of having a penis, Dany saved the fucking world, didn't get enough time to even grieve her losses. What she did was out of anger and grief not out of evil. was it wrong? Yes. But if she had gone with her instincts rather than listen to tyrion, ALL her dragons would be alive. The army of the dead would be behind the wall, Jorah would still be alive. She would have flown her dragons to the red keep and melted the damn castle with Cersei inside of it. No mass casualties civilian or armies. Can't believe they wrote tyrion to be so dumb.

I don’t get why you’d support a character like a football team, the whole intended purpose of the story was lost on you both which is such a shame considering I really enjoyed watching a lot of this with you. She’s far worse than Cersei now. She’s killed a million innocent people and that’s the point. I can’t understand why you’re saying it’s cerseis fault when they literally surrendered.
