    In my life this has been more noticeable when there is a lack of power. Seeing how less fortunate people are treated based on their appearance makes this concept painfully obvious.

    As a certified weirdo, I've found that my eccentric fashion is what brings my people to me -- I realized the true power of my fashion choices when I moved to a new city and tried to make new friends. I joined an acting class, found my passion in that, and incidentally, week after week I found myself making increasingly daring choices (none outside of my comfort zone and fully in the realm of what I would wear, just maybe not to a class) and with that, more people started to try to understand me. I used to be very expressive with my fashion until I went through some major rough patches due to trauma, depression, and addiction issues. Once I found my way back to fashion, I noticed other things in my life improving as well. Fashion has honestly saved my life and my mental health by providing me with an outlet to show others what I want them to see -- how colorful, bright, approachable, and confident I am, when, those people might not approach me otherwise.

    Thinking laterally, this also helps me better understand why people opt-to go for cosmetic surgery. There is an underlying need for power in the eyes of the person they are trying to appeal to--whether that be the public, group of friends, or a future ideal partner.

    One of the reasons I became very attracted to my now wife was because of how she dressed herself, which I noticed very quickly after we started dating. It was feminine and "pretty", but also showed a certain flare for color and refinement different from the norm. It showed me that she had an eye for detail, aesthetics and creativity. Later on I learned that she is a painter and I love her paintings.

    I’m a petite Asian femme person and due to racial stereotyping I never felt that people’s assumptions about me aligned with how I perceived myself. Developing my style (alternative emo mixed with bling y2k ish) has helped me feel seen accurately and I really value the soft power it holds in forcing people to not be able to ignore my personality and interests despite my background.
    Sometimes I wish I didn’t need to use style as a battle tool tho. The other day I went to a party after a formal event and felt very anxious throughout bc I had to borrow casual clothes from my friend since it was last minute. Bc her clothes are more “basic” I felt I wasn’t giving the new people I was meeting the impression of myself I wanted to leave them with.

      @ananya341 Год назад +16

      You say battle tool, I say super power.....Coming from a similar background as you, I resonate with a lot, if not most of your comment. I just wanted to add, I wish though that we didn't have to rely on essentially curated consumption to express ourselves. I have a huge problem with getting obsessed with pieces of clothing and not being able to stop thinking about the perfect outfit they'd make for days, for my part, I am beginning to learn to repurpose and stitch fabric for my own body and it makes me feel more empowered than ever.

      I hear that about wishing to not have to use style as a battle tool. People like to prescribe certain things to me, peg me in a certain way, put me into certain boxes, underestimate or infantilize, for lack of better words. Recognizing that you have to carefully choose how you interact with the world, thus acknowledging and puting energy into it, is kinda exhausting. It's like currated looks or aesthetics is authenticity, but so is everyday sweats and sneakers, especially for long stretches of time (I mean depressive episodes, right?). It seems like it's human nature from a less evolved standpoint, to reduce someone so in their mind you're not a threat to them, which is whack.

    personally i believe fashion is a form of power on more than a peer to peer scale it keeps countries in the eye of the globe with cultural titans such as nike,addidas that permeate throughout any place with people keeping countries relevant for trade etc such as how France has positioned themselves to be the leaders of fashion and high fashion and expectations of clothing from France is perceived as better quality, but those r just my thoughts.

    I saw an interesting YT short the other day about someone having a "collected" appearance being the biggest deterrent for being attacked/robbed. That when someone makes a random mark, they always look for someone who has a certain inconsistency in their appearance - a disheveled look or something. A weird example of soft power, but I think it fits. And #pvv - I'm going to be living on my own for the first time this upcoming year. I'm 31 and have always had at least one roommate, so I'm really really excited to take this next step in my life. It'll be expensive, sure, but there's something about it that just feels like it's the moment I'll finally, fully grow up.

    This discussion actually reminds me of a book called Black Ivy by Jason Jules which specifically talks about the fashion of the early civil rights movement. Black Ivy took the privileged, standardized Ivy look and gave it a cooler, edgier spin that literally embodied “cool” itself - an effortless resilience and composure that was also a way of asserting power. Since I was looking at photos of that style with a modern (and way less distinguished) eye, I personally found the changes themselves pretty subtle at times, but definitely pervasive. The people in those clothes would *still* look cool now. Fashion really helped shape public opinion around the civil rights movement and the Black community at the time, and I think it’s kind of a blessing and a curse that many people (especially those from positions of privilege) still tend to underestimate the very legitimate power that fashion has always had. Anyways sorry for the ramble, your video was so wonderful and concise and got me excited about my own wardrobe again. I subscribed instantly and I’m def going to be checking out the rest of your content

    I think that fashion is also a form of soft power because it's a powerful way to express self-identity, especially gender identity. As I've gotten more into fashion, I've leaned more into women's fashion and learned more about myself through experimentation with gender nonconformity. I think the future of fashion is unisex and it's a matter of time before people accept it!

    As an Asian who grew up in the southern United States, this is something I implicitly understood but didn’t necessarily have a word for until now! When you encounter people who (sometimes subconsciously) look down on those who look different, I learned that appearing more put together or important (but not too much) usually increased the chances of people listening to what you had to say and just being less dismissive in general. It’s unfortunate that I had to learn this via the prejudices of others, but the silver lining is I started being intentional and observant of clothing and fits way earlier than I otherwise would have. Thanks for a great video ☺️

  • @bryanflo4500
    @bryanflo4500 Год назад +8

    I find the intersections of fashion, identity, soft power, perceptions of socio-economic status and consumerism to be fascinating. As you mention in the video, people are always conciously and subconsciously interpreting who you are and the implications of your appearance about your character.
    Thanks for the videos, Drew. Over time, I've realized that I go through emotional cycles that span a few years, and when I find myself getting into fashion again and the intentions behind my appearance, I think it definitely signals an uptrend of sorts. I think it's mostly to do with this desire to "take care of myself" both inwardly and outwardly. Battling with depression, anxiety, and undiagnosed ADHD, I am now on the path of understanding myself more as an adult while having empathy for the child within. I find having access to channels like yours very impactful for engaging my creative mind.
    As a man of color, I find immense value in hearing the opinions of someone like you, and it affirms me that my opinions also matter and that I should continue striving to create things, make art, and express myself. Much peace and love to you in this new year, my man. Take care :)

    I love the idea of soft power and the different ideas, realities, and assumptions it can assume, especially in the form of fashion and clothes. It really gives an idea of how someone may conduct themselves or portray/think of themselves, and it illuminates for all others to see. For someone who may not be the most confident in themselves, or wants to portray a more confident version of themselves, fashion is a great place to begin on the journey of developing yourself and the idea of what/who "you" are.

    To bring-in some esoteric ideas about solf power, such as Yin-Yang, consider the Japanese Godai(classic 5 element system). I like to think of this system like producing a product and getting it to market. 1. You get Raw Resorces(earth) 2. you process and refine those resources(water) 3. you direct and push the assembly of these refined items into it's intended end product(fire) 4. you package it/dress it up/ market and advertise it etc(wind) 5. the Final product is actualized(void/jewel). In this instance of solf power, being fashion, I would categorize it as Wind element; the covering image and persona(mask) of You, the human within. The same way as you have a bowl that holds your soup. It is the feminine vessel(crescent) that is needed to harbor the life within it.

As for the topic, I think you hit the nail on the head with the celebrity stylist example. I would also say that scripts of insufficiency are deeply rooted into our culture because it keeps the money flowing. So I think it's up to us to liberate fashion from being a soft power tool that tells you you're not keeping up, to being something about color, beauty, and expression. I think people have it completely backwards and it's kind of funny how that ends up happening for many appeals to authority. Drew, it does not matter what I think of your outfit in the beginning because it was your cadence, the sound of your voice, the way you thoughtfully pieced your arguments and ideas together, the way you interacted with your audience that INFLUENCED the outfit. You wear the clothing, the clothing does not wear you. Someone can be decked out in the most regal looking clothes with the cleanest, sleekest fit, and yet if they act like a fool and make others uncomfortable, it will influence how that FIT looks because the person is the one selling the clothing, not vice versa. It is a fallacy that people make when they think an institution makes a person. It is the people who make the institution. This goes for fashion brands, colleges, universities, media outlets, restaurants, whatever.
    I may have thought that your outfit was odd looking at first, but your personality and way of being (and i guarantee you it would manifest itself the same no matter what you are wearing) is what made the outfit be associated with being agreeable, endearing and pleasant. Because you are those things and you've made the viewer associate those traits with the clothing you wear.

    ever since watching moderngurlz costume analyses videos on movies, I've really been able to develop an understanding of the hidden and not so hidden meanings behind what we wear and apply it to my daily life. I like to think of it sometimes as playing a character, it appeals to my love of theatrics haha!
    But for example, a big way that soft power idea has influenced me even before I was aware of it was actually in church! There were a couple main things I kept in mind; this is an excuse to dress more formally without it being seen as odd, because of how nice most people are I can dress relatively outlandishly and nobody will say anything and lastly, because there are a lot of older adults who are a bit old fashioned like my parents, I have to dress quite modestly. Whereas in school the social politics were far more different, I feel like church is quite a unique environment to dress for, especially the one I go to which is very diverse.

    Well said. I started being more intentional with the way I dress and staying true to my personal taste, and I feel a lot more content. #pvv compete in my first bodybuilding show

    I never thought about fashion in regards to soft power before, so big thanks for introducing and so eloquently breaking down the concept n how it's executed!
    For me tho, I got a couple things to accomplish in 2023, mostly surviving the first half of the year n hopefully finding a roommate or a place to rent. Then it's moving in with my bf up north and getting acquainted with things up there. Beyond that, enjoy life as it comes along.
    Preciate it Drew, till next time ✌🏽

    As someone who’s non-conforming and into maximalism, I definitely get the sense that there are people who look down on me for my presentation. At the same time, there are people I stand out to in a meaningful way because of my style. You either think “oh that’s a weirdo” or “oh, that person has character” depending on your own personal style. The same way I frankly kinda judge people for wearing name brands (unless they style it), others can find it respectable.

    P.V.V. Answer: 25 pull-ups. It's been one of my major fitness goals ever since I started working out in middle school, and yet, even now in college, I've never managed to "pull" it off. If I ever manage to accomplish this feat, to me it'll mean that I'm "truly" strong, it'll mean that I genuinely have the power to change myself into being like the people I admire. Is this a healthy mindset?... Now that I think about it, probably not. But regardless of why I want to do it, at the very least, it would be a cool accomplishment.

    I'd like to get back to my roots, where I used to just do me, & not care about others' opinions as much.
