- In this video, I'm going to be creating and ranking every classic cocktail in a tierlist. I'll be covering all of the most popular cocktails, from the Old Fashioned to the Margarita. I'll also be giving my thoughts on each cocktail, and why I ranked it where I did.
I'm a big fan of cocktails, and I've been making them for years. I've tried a lot of different cocktails, and I've developed a pretty good sense of what I like and what I don't like.
In this video, I'm going to be sharing my knowledge of classic cocktails with you. I'm going to tell you what makes a good cocktail, and I'm going to give you my recommendations for the best classic cocktails.
If you're a fan of cocktails, or if you're just getting started, then this video is for you. I hope you enjoy it!
Here are the cocktails that I'll be covering in the video:
Old Fashioned
Aviation
Mint Julep
Tom Collins
Bees Knees
Manhattan
Martini
Margarita
Pisco Sour
Daiquiri
Mojito
Sidecar
Negroni
Caipirinha
Sazerac
Here are the tiers that I'll be using to rank the cocktails:
S-Tier: These are the best of the best. They're classic cocktails that are always a crowd-pleaser.
A-Tier: These are great cocktails that are well-made and delicious.
B-Tier: These are good cocktails, but they're not quite as good as the ones in the A-Tier.
C-Tier: These are okay cocktails, but they're not anything special.
D-Tier: These are not very good cocktails. I would not recommend them.
I hope you enjoy the video!

Not all heroes wear capes
@@philipmoser3784 Is that a compliment? I'm autistic, so I sometimes can't tell if someone is being sarcastic or not.
@@EvelynL.1112 yes! You’re a hero for going to the trouble, even ranking them in tiers. That was a commendable effort Evelyn. I understand how reading body language and detecting sarcasm can be difficult, my nephew has autism. But tbh, detecting sarcasm in a RUclips comment section can be difficult for all of us unfortunately.
@@philipmoser3784 Thank you very much for the compliment! It was my pleasure! 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Ask a customer and a mojito is A tier; ask a bartender and it's an F!
Hahaha sounds about right.
Customers are always right 😉
Bartenders when they have to do there job 😡😡😡
Mojitos are gross
Fellow Massachusetts citizen here! Was looking for a vid on this! I’m a big Tom Collins fan. Most folks in my family prefer vodka cocktails, but I’ve never liked the taste of vodka myself. Something about the sourness with a slight sweetness works with most gin cocktails to me, and Tom Collins is just like a fine accented lemonade to me, and I adore it. Then again, I’m less of a drinker than most of my Irish family anyway haha (I’m the lightweight lol)
Right on! Happy to help a fellow Massachusettsian. 😁 glad you enjoyed the video
This vid was amazing. Part 2 please!!!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thanks man! Happy you enjoyed this one 😁🙏
Lui! That was fun, but I must say I'm exhausted! I imagine so are you. Such lists and rankings are so very subjective and yours was as fun and meaningful as anyone's. My one comment is that I've never seen a Sazerac with that many dashes of Peychaud's ..... And it is one of my very favorites as well. Salud!
Thank you! Happy you enjoyed it and yet it was a lot to film and then edit. I am exhausted. I wanted to try and do something fun like this but it sure was a lot. I love sazeracs with quite a bit of bitters.
@@Lui_Fern I can see that you do! :) I use one dash of Angostura and 3-4 dashes Peychaud's.
I got whiplash when I heard you say 10 dashes, I’ll have to try it like that next time I make one
@@alextedrow4818 please do! Let me know what you think 😁🙏
LUI!!! Great video!!! I love all of these!!! I sometimes put a little coconut syrup in my Caipirinha!!! That is def my fav Summer cocktail!!! CHEERS!!!
Hi Lui,
Love your RUclips videos, you are obviously an expert bartender and very knowledgeable about spirits and how to make cocktails. I especially liked your video on Tequila.
I have a small quibble with you about your low ranking of martinis. I suggest the following changes in the way you make it.
The Classic Gin Martini:
First, both the best London Dry Gin (very important) and the martini glass should be kept in a very cold freezer.
Second, the dry vermouth should be poured in the frozen glass, swirled around to coat the inside of the glass, and then dumped out.
Third, the extremely cold gin is then poured in to fill the glass, NO ICE SHOULD BE USED.
Four, four Juniper berries and both an orange peel and Amalfi lemon peel should be added as garnish.
This is an "A" rated Martini version.
Lui, please keep your very informative videos coming, all the best. Eric Prentis
I loved the video, great job at making all of these. Just missed the all time classic but very different Bloody Mary and the whiskey sour. Keep up these great vids🎉
Thanks friend! Yeah i dropped the ball on the Whiskey sour for sure.
Journeyman is about 15 minutes from where I live. Love that place.
Oh awesome! Love their stuff
love them all...but the Sazerac and the last word...man those are just amazing
I agree those two are incredible
Always enjoy your content Lui, and thank you for raising awareness on tequila additives (you certainly changed my tequila buying habits!). I know it's all subjective, but was surprised at the martini's D placement! When made with a great gin (like Plymouth or the Botanist) and a great vermouth (I like Dolin), it's a perfect cocktail-S tier for me!
Lui i Love!! Rabbit ears with my Old Fashioneds, both essential oils blend and reveal incredible flavors and thus revealing amazing nuances from the Bourbon, Cheers!!
Ahh that's awesome! Happy you agree 😁
Totally agree with your S tier list, the Sazerac and OF are my favourite Whiskey cocktails. The Sidecar and Mojito deserve S tier status too! 🙈😛
I gotta say your description of a martini is spot on. I usually make a dirty martini and it’s not so much because I like the drink but usually that I want an excuse to eat stuffed olives.
Sazeracs are the bomb. Another nearly perfect New Orleans drink is the Vieux Carre.
I picked up a bottle of Olmeca Altos - Plata for my margaritas based on one of your recs and it has been a game changer.
Wooo! Happy you enjoyed those! And yeah i had planned on making a Vieux Carré but i ran out of time.
Great job Lui. Thank you sir.
Thanks for watching!
Great video. 🍸🥃Using a barrel-aged gin as a replacement for the whiskey in a Manhattan is a great way to mix it up.
That's a super solid suggestion! Thank you 😁🙏
I personally rank an Aviation at S tier, but it has sentimental meaning for me, so there's bias. I wonder if some of the stigma or reason some people avoid an Aviation is because it's a gin-based cocktail. I made a vodka variant that I call an Aviator... it turned out really nice and honestly didn't change much in flavor (lack of juniper from gin doesn't kill this riff -- the mix of lemon juice, Maraschino liqueur, and Creme de Violette still play together nicely). Imma keep that variant in my back pocket in case someone is curious about an Aviation, but is iffy about gin being involved.
Lovely Andy! Thank you so much for sharing. Happy to hear how much you appreciate the Aviation. It one i have enjoyed and definitely feel like it gets undeserved hate.
My question to you is if I prefer to use organic agave syrup... What is the equivalent conversion % for simple syrup
“slutty cherry” is always on point 😂
Hahahaha I'm happy you agree 😁🙏
I'm fairly new to cocktails. But one which I've just discovered, which I believe is considered a classic, is the Gimlet. I tried it about 4 different times, changing the ratios of the ingredients to make it suit my tastes more. That doesn't mean I didn't like it at first. I loved every variation. So if I were to take your suggestion and say what I think you've missed, the Gimlet would be it.
Nice video. I agree almost completely w/ your ranking. My ideal pisco sour has mosto verde pisco, key lime juice, egg white, and amargo chuncho bitters. Heaven in a glass. Can't stand a martini - don't see the attraction other than showing people that you're "sophisticated". I like the Last Word, but there are many better variants. I love Joaquin Simo's Naked and Famous, but I made one last night that is an instant top tier cocktail for me - it's called Naked in the Desert by Diego Valencia from Tulum, MX. Equal parts sotol, yellow chartreuse, aperol, and lime juice.
I love sour cocktails. You were missing two of my favorites: daquiri and whiskey sour. Along with the margarita (I prefer Tommy's) these are the top three cocktails I frequently make.
I cut the whiskey sour due to time unfortunately. I should've def included it tho. That's a.mkstake on my end. I realized it as i was editing
@Lui Fernandes That was a lot of cocktails for one video. I just realized from the list that the daiquiri was there lol. I must of been distracted since I was cooking while watching.
I liked the Brazilian funk as soon as you got to the Pisco sour 😂
Had to change it up a little 😁
Additive free tequila! Marg my fav. I agree it’s a top cocktail. ❤🎉
Only way to do it!
Margarita made well is 👑
This is a terrific video. I won't argue about the rankings, but there are three cocktails where I agree with your rankings but think the drinks can be adjusted so that they move up a notch or two: Aviation - no more than 1/8 ounce of creme de violette for a three-ounce build and lime juice instead of lemon juice. Manhattan - use a 50% abv whiskey (which you did, I think) and increase the vermouth so that the ratio of whiskey to vermouth is 50-50. Martini - use Lillet Blanc instead of vermouth in a 2:1 ratio (gin to vermouth), and use a lower juniper gin instead of a London dry. All that's from an old man fussing about how to make his Manhattan. ;)
Thank you so much for such an in-depth comment ! I do personally prefer my martinis with Lillet rather than Vermouth as well! And duly noted on your Manhattan specs!
I've never had a Manhattan that I liked, I'll have to try this.
I build mojitos in the glass, don't shake (to avoid breaking up the mint, it makes the drink overall more bitter plus you get those small pieces like you said). Just muddle gently
Pisco Sour S Tier rank?
📢 Let's Go!!!! 🇵🇪
Oh absolutely! It's one of the best by far
Never seen a Sazerac with that much peychauds, gonna try that
Give it a shot! Let me know what you think 😁
YESSSSSS!!!! First in!!!
Thanks Tim 😁
Sidecar is by far my favorite. SSS
Sidecar is such a dope cocktail
Would have loved to see a Gin Ricky
That would've been a good one to do actually! Darn! I unfortunately was running out of time as i didn't want to make this super long
First of all, thank you very much for the time and effort you used to make such an excellent video. I really appreciate what you’ve done! Perhaps it’s just me, IOW please feel free to ignore this, but I would have liked to have seen a less rushed approach. Sloppiness while making the cocktails - ice and liquids being spilled - gave a less professional feel to the whole vibe. I know you must be a superb bartender and I think it didn’t quite show like I wanted it to. Again, please feel free to ignore one man’s (wrong?) opinion, but also keep up making your awesome videos
No tequila? And hey neighbor. No idea you were in MA. Thx for all the info on tequilas!!
I don’t know how controversial this opinion is but, I usually do this 0.5oz Aperol, 0.5oz compari. Balances out the bitter/sweetness of the aperitifs.
I don't think it's that controversial! Thanks for sharing ☺️
Just out of curiosity is your simple a 1:1 or 2:1 ratio syrup?
1:1
Superior option to a Negroni imho is the Boulevardier
you mentioned a drink El don? didn't find that receipe
Sidecar is my favorite, it's S like me
Imagine a bees knees with a honey straw 👌🏼
👏🏻🍸
😁😁🙏
How come you don’t use patron it’s additive free as well no ?
You D-listed the mojito!?!?!? That's one of my favorites. More balanced than a mint julep imo which you gave an A to.
I fully stand by it. Mojitos where bits of mint get stuck in your teeth are definitely d tier
Enjoyed the video...A couple of "changes" to suggest, no sweetener in the margarita and use turbinado sugar in the mojito.
Ah yes, one of the cocktails of all time
I wish I had some green chartreuse for a champs-alysees
Another great cocktail
Great video! You forgot to add your links tho.
Oh sh*t you are right..... Wow I'm terrible. Thank you
@@Lui_Fern 😂😂😂
All good bro, I’d seen the videos anyway!
What u got against Hennessy !
You left out the classic and refined vodka cran
I like the Mojito a lot and so do a lot of other people do too so I do not understand why you ranked it so low
well. Like with anything i post. Its my opinion lol. I don't like Mint in my teeth. I love Mojitos, when shaken and strained like i said in the video. but classic mojitos with the mint in the cocktail, i strongly dislike it. But hey again we all have our opinions. that's the beauty of the internet. We can all share them!
Controversial take on the Martini
Yeah it is haha. Def not the norm
Cimarron blanco is so hard to find near me 😞
Really? Damn I'm sorry to hear that
@@Lui_Fern total wine lists it for sale at the one closest to me and also in Delaware but it's always out of stock. I did find a bottle of the Reposado though
@@jackbrady86 damn that's frustrating
@@Lui_Fern it is. Arette isn't even sold here, which I know was one of your other recommended Blancoa for margs
@@Lui_Fern okay so it's been less than twenty-four hours since I said that and I just found both of them at my local tiny little hole-in-the-wall liquor store 🤣
You videos are so wacky! Everything but the kitchen sink! Great content, but sensory overload. Big jesters!, Crazy music, jump cuts! Wacky wipes, and more! Watching your videos is like riding a rollercoaster while getting punched in the face. 🤣 LOL
How can you say Manhattan is boring and yet have old fashioned as s tier?
Because it's all subjective and my opinion?
