Another cool concept for a video would be analyzing the (in my opinion) five branches of alcohol: Fruit, Honey, Grains, Sugarcane, and Agave. I have a chart that is a work in progress that breaks down the most notable results from each of those primary ingredients, from fermenting, to distilling, to aging. Would be happy to share
After finishing the video I'm really curious... If you don't fully believe that every cocktail is one of these six roots, I want to hear the rationale. I would love to hear the counter argument and maybe demonstrate it with a few counterexamples that don't fit the model.
Not a bad idea. But it just comes down to semantics, and how to define words because this doesn't explain how these cocktails originated, they didn't start as one of these and become others, it's just a way to clarify them and to get better understanding of them.
Seems like a stretch to tie a last word format to just a sidecar or to say all of tiki cocktails derived from a daiquiri. I could see connections but those seem like much larger steps than going from Daquiri to sidecar and calling it an originator bc it has a liquer
I generally agree, but to keep it within a nice theory and be able to teach it to people, I think it makes sense, but it's also why. At the beginning of this video I said that I don't fully agree with their theory on all of this, but I think it's a great learning tool when teaching bartenders the general basics of these cocktail families But like I said in another comment, specifically when it's talking about Tiki cocktails, I find that this starts to fall apart a bit
@ OK. BUT! I’m looking at my copy of the Codex now… if the Mai Tai (which has not only orange liquor, but also orgeat, in addition to spirit+lime+sweetener) is a variation of a Daiquiri (Sour), then how is a Side Car not? Likewise, the Monte Carlo is an Old Fashioned sweetened with liqueur instead of sugar, and they list that as an OF variant. So, by their own logic, how is the side car it’s own root and not just a variation on the sour? This is where I feel like the Codex takes a great concept, but plays really fast and loose with its rules. It feels like they just love the Sidecar (so do I, to be fair) and elevated its status as a result. You could argue it’s an important drink, because it birthed a lot of other drinks that they felt warranted its own page… but… then, how does the Mai Tai not get its own? The entire world of tiki drinks just falls into “sour”. But the Sidecar is it’s own thing? 🤔 Am I crazy or does that just not make sense I’d love to see someone take the same approach but apply some more rigorous set of rules.
@logicalparadox2897 you're not crazy hahaha I completely understand your logic and that's exactly why I say at the beginning that I don't fully agree with everything they say and is because of things like this. Where you can make these arguments and it's not really splitting hairs but it's valid! They just needed a way to classify drinks at least as a starting point. But I'm with you!
One of my favorite books for sure. Tied with the way of the cocktail probably.
That was a really informative video! Do you think you could make a video about round building?
Thats a great idea! I can definitely work on that!
Isnt the side car originating from the Daisy?

But isn't the sidecar really just a variation on a sour? I just don't get it being its own root. Love it though.
It has Orange liquor. Sours are spirit, citrus sugar. Sidecar has Curacao or orange liquor. Which is another element.
