- Valeria Mignaco, soprano
Alfonso Marin, lute
Another version of this wonderful song. Performed at the presentation of our latest CD "Clear or Cloudy" for the label Musica Ficta. English Reformed Church (Engelse Kerk), Amsterdam 13-February-2010.
What I particularly like about this performance is that is not a concert-or-stage style "performance," but is done in the intimate way Dowland's songs were meant to be sung, with all the musicians gathered around the part-book that had the lute and (up to) four singers' parts all on two facing pages, so they could stand or sit and perform this music just for themselves. And, yes, her voice is exquisite.
Merveilleuse interprétation, voix sublime, parfaitement modulée. Respect du livret, littéralement "vécu". C'est enchanteur. Quel plaisir nous offre cette soprano d'exception. Mille mercis.
the hidden transcendence of melancholy.
this performance and the one by Phoebe Jevtovic Rosquist are both sobering and ennobling at the same time.
wow.
Simply moving. Amazing what beauty one finds with random searches. If this were the last thing I heard on earth, that would be okay.
Je ne me lasse pas d'écouter et réécouter cet air fameux du génial Dowland et l'interprétation que nous en offre Valeria Mignaco est sans conteste celle qui me bouleverse le plus : voix sublime, livret vécu.
You both made Dowland proud.
One of the greatest songs ever written, and a beautiful performance. (I like this one even better than the other version).
BEAUTIFUL. THANKS.
Brava! This woman's voice matches this song perfectly. I'm working on this currently in my private voice lessons, and the breath control is ridiculous. She has astounding control. How beautiful!
Flow, my tears, fall from your springs!
Exiled for ever, let me mourn;
Where night's black bird her sad infamy sings,
There let me live forlorn.
Down vain lights, shine you no more!
No nights are dark enough for those
That in despair their lost fortunes deplore.
Light doth but shame disclose.
Never may my woes be relieved,
Since pity is fled;
And tears and sighs and groans my weary days of all joys have deprived.
From the highest spire of contentment
My fortune is thrown;
And fear and grief and pain for my desert
Are my hopes, since hope is gone. Hark! you shadows that in darkness dwell,
Learn to contemn light
Happy, happy they that in hell
Feel not the world's despite.
Lucianna Lima
Thank you for taking the time to set down the transcript: much appreciated
I think it is "last fortunes" not "lost"
Eventually I like to hear this interpretation and I always have a shiver in my spine. Amazing duo.
This church is probably the calmest place in Amsterdam
OH MY GOD SHE SING LIKE AN ANGEL!!!! AND SHE IS SUCH IN THE MUSIC THAT WE CAN FEEL WHAT JOHN DOWLAND FELT WHEN HE WROTE THAT IN HER VOICE AND BODY INTERPRETATION"!!!!!!!
THE BEST, BRAVO!
SUPERBE
I prefer the old version. I feel more emotional tension. You always move me! Thanks
The same thing happened to me... jaja
Chorus/refrain from 1:50 - 2:02 and 2:35 - 2:45 are some of the most exquisite sounds I've ever heard.
Tu canto produce escalofríos. Es maravilloso.
Marvelous how they hold the tension together of this wonderful song...

一直很喜歡魯特琴的演奏音樂,配合人聲,可以譜出許多的優雅婉約,享受著獨自一人的寧靜與孤寂。最早接觸魯特琴,是在遊戲音樂裡發現的^^"。

Pretty, good playing and singing
