the only people qualified to judge "period" music are dead. So...I don't know if critics can be objective today :) we'll never know what antiquity meant or liked in music, but thankfully they left notes :)
"If it sounds good, it IS good." (Duke Ellington) There's always room for another beautiful interpretation, different from all others. Love this version.
This is quite something, and my husband Anthony Rooley stated that "It gets to the essence of Dowland". As he has worked with Dowland most of his life he should know! Fantastic to stumble on this Fiona….And what a wonderful arrangement by David Bruce. It was so encouraging to have some one working with such sensitivity to this deep text , transforming old to new, without any loss of integrity to the original… Thank you for posting... Evelyn
That shows great generosity by a musician, indeed two musicians, towards others. I would far prefer to hear Anthony Rooley accompanying. It would be interesting to hear Fiona Campbell sing the original version with lute accompaniment.
So honoured to be her school mate back in the early days in Perth, Australia. Wonderful to hear this song being sung so beautifully. The arrangement with strings was just magnificent!
I am proud that there are at least some Australians capable of making a contribution to the performance of fine classical musical. Show cased on You tube, Tognetti and the ACO give me significant pride as a fellow countryman. I regret that too many Australians are imbued with false and PC notions of what constitutes the arts. An excellent performance. Bravo.
Beautiful hermosa instrumentacion, ensamble maravilloso , y tu voz Fiona es ideal, que aterciopelada, oscura, redonda suave y dulce con gran potencia y a la vez tan medida! , me llevan al cielo y mas alla tambien !
Above all: this is exquisite musique rendered exquisitely by great musicians and awesome singer! Yes, it is Renaissance composition with modern instruments. So? Who says that Renaissance, Baroque, Classical music cannot be performed with modern instruments? I love HIP, but above all I believe that music well performed has to be highly appreciated. 5 stars for interpretation and beauty!
Why are people complanining that this doesn't sound baroque? It shouldn't really sound baroque in the first place as Dowland was a renaissance composer. Good arrangement and interpretation if you ask me.
Dowland takes place between renaissance and baroque period. Mozart was also between classic and romantic time. In our madness to classify, do not we forget that a composer is overall a free bird ? If the music is good, I open my ears, my heart. Best regards :-)
Francette Vigneron mozart is not really romantic I think. I would even say he's the greatest classical composer along with Haydn. Beethoven and Schubert are more representative of the transition I think. Well ok there are the requiem and maybe DG that sound quite romantic but the majority of his works don't, especially with the modern interpretation of his music that insist on objectivity and formally... I agree with your message though
It is totally a typical English Madrigal and the resemblance of Monteverdi is uncanny. And of course a very beautiful piece. The van Eyck's solo Recorder version shows the piece very much more clear.
Flow, my tears, fall from your springs! Exiled for ever, let me mourn; Where night's black bird her sad infamy sings, There let me live forlorn. Down vain lights, shine you no more! No nights are dark enough for those That in despair their last fortunes deplore. Light doth but shame disclose. Never may my woes be relieved, Since pity is fled; And tears and sighs and groans my weary days, my weary days Of all joys have deprived. From the highest spire of contentment My fortune is thrown; And fear and grief and pain for my deserts, for my deserts Are my hopes, since hope is gone. Hark! you shadows that in darkness dwell, Learn to contemn light Happy, happy they that in hell Feel not the world's despite.
Because with RUclips, most typically expect video to actually be entertaining video. Not taking sides here, I'm a strong believer of music being beautiful in itself; being able to just close your eyes and let the messages play through your mind. Good pieces can often play a movie in your mind, if people only gave it the chance. On a side note, thanks to the uploader for posting this here :)
Lovely soulful measured performance of this fabulous tune. The Australian Chamber Orchestra were great with very good balance of sound. I thought of Kathleen Ferrier when I first heard it...not sure if she recorded this.
Seeing the cellists made me miss playing the cello cause I played it for 6 years and it was fun, but then I remembered that I sucked ass at the cello and should’ve taken choir in school instead 😂
This is also good version but I can't look something when voice and picture is not synchronized, it makes very sick feeling and very unpleasant to watch. Could you please do some re-editing with this, thank you. I love this Dowland and this another point of wiew, we play this with acoustic and classical guitars instrumentally named Lacrimae of Pavane. I´m not so big fan of classical music but Dowland is so musical and good for singers too.
Yo detesté el arreglo. Tanto adorno hace que se pierda lo principal. La belleza de esta música radica en lo puro y preciso del sonido. Me pareció empalagoso.
If you could play this music on a jaw harp it would still be wonderful. . .this version is a little self indulgent and touchy-feely for me. . .but still, a great effort.
Lewis, I have to strongly disagree. In this case, despite the number of the musicians and complexity of the orchestra, the arrangement is unexpectedly "simple" and lightweight.
I didn't care for this version too much. Fiona's voice does not stand out clearly above the instruments, and the violins have a rather cheep sound. Perhaps it is the acoustics of the room or the quality of the recording devices. In any case, it left me cold.
Her voice is beautiful, but I wasn’t crazy about some of the interpretive choices. Also, the violin flourishes didn’t fit Dowland’s style, and were too Italianate for my taste. Still, some really lovely moments!
For me the arrangement destroys the lute song ... its not an opera aria ... it is a little very dark emotional piece that centers on the voice. For me it's overarrange and by way to dramatically sung. Again its not Purcell. But they are trying to make into. The voice is good but overdramatic where colour and shades of the voice need to create that certain Downland Saudade
If you listen to an ‘original’ broken consort - or even a solo lute - version, it has much of the same elaborate and too much-ness. These musicians are obciously modern with a ‘luggage’ of romantic pieces, but I find their approach in accompanying the vocal is very renaissance (BTW I play the lute myself)
Ms. Campbell’s voice is warm and rich. I don’t care if it doesn’t sound “period”-it’s a valid and beautiful song interpretation.
the only people qualified to judge "period" music are dead. So...I don't know if critics can be objective today :) we'll never know what antiquity meant or liked in music, but thankfully they left notes :)
"If it sounds good, it IS good." (Duke Ellington) There's always room for another beautiful interpretation, different from all others. Love this version.
Perfectly put! I’ll quote both of you, fiercely, from now on!

Great to hear an informed opinion on this beautiful interpretation of ancient music.
So honoured to be her school mate back in the early days in Perth, Australia. Wonderful to hear this song being sung so beautifully. The arrangement with strings was just magnificent!
I love this interpretation, it’s refreshing to hear a well balanced mezzo moving gracefully through the passagio on this piece.
Simply beautiful.
It was moving, and beautiful.
For music that is all that matters.
Bravo bravo Fiona. Absolutely beautiful singing
Fiona Campbell has a sublime voice..I had the privilege of singing in the SPC with her.
Beautiful individual interpretation - and a grand voice!
Thanks for the upload!

I came across this video about 5 years ago while taking a music class in college. I still enjoy listening to this today.
ONE OF THE BEST VOICES EVER!
The lyrics are absolutely perfect and beautiful 😭
Not only beautiful, melody, but the delivery of the well written words make this a enrichly experience, thank you
Omg this is beautiful! Voice is thicker than Jif peanut butter!!!
Peanut butter references are only valid in one country thankfully...
That is gorgeous music. One of the best arrangements I've ever heard if not the best.
Love this transcription and the musical singing. This long time favorite piece brought tears yet again. I want the album.
Fascinating arrangement. Divine vocals. For me...overall haunting emotional
piece of music. Thanks for sharing.
BEAUTIFUL. THANKS.
Oh my! Such a beautiful voice!

Gosh Fiona, what a lovely voice. Many thanks, one of my fav songs.
Dowland + David Bruce= Awesome!
beautiful music, beautiful voice!
interesting creative arrangement of the Dowland lute part. Enjoyed the "improvised" ornaments.
They aren't "improvised", they are improvised.

+Chris Why I should think that in the Baroque improvised on it as such. I think it was enduring.

WOW! What depth of voice!❤
Fantastic.

So beautiful ...
Very nice Interpretation;. We no Not know anything about the Original Interpretation. We just can like or dislike a new Interpretation. i like it.
It's music, why are so many people complaining about the video quality?!?
This is a beautiful interpretation

Lovely soulful measured performance of this fabulous tune. The Australian Chamber Orchestra were great with very good balance of sound. I thought of Kathleen Ferrier when I first heard it...not sure if she recorded this.
Ferrier was contralto. I haven't come across a recording of her doing this. But much more deep liquid voice.
the chords from the begining its like ''the follia''
Beautiful voice!!!
The introductory 'folía' is a very good idea!
Thank You, kind man!

LOVE the guys mohawk! That guy is so metal lol
Seeing the cellists made me miss playing the cello cause I played it for 6 years and it was fun, but then I remembered that I sucked ass at the cello and should’ve taken choir in school instead 😂
Best
She sounds a lot like Renee Fleming. Lord of the Rings. Go girl. I enjoyed it!
"Flow My Tears... The Policeman Said" P.K.D. 1928-1982
Neat version.
1597, in First Book of Songs, by John Dowland
May I know what do you call on that performance ?
"An arrangement by David Bruce"
Is this the same David Bruce from youtube?
Indeed
May I ask if this is C Minor or A Minor?
wait, who said that Dowland was baroque?????
Is renaissance and first baroque. You can't divided it in a concrete year. It's a process and continuous evolution
This is Renaissance, not baroque >.

Yeah, that's it!
it is not of course

cuál version recomiendas?
@@Nadelanuyou can't say, it should be this or that, every peice of art is down to the llistner to interpret,
...aaand the winner is:Angela Hicks!

Превратила прекрасное в оперу. И сама не способна понять , что делает
Too bad this is so messed up. I'd love to see it when it's fixed.
Her voice is perfectly beautiful but I really prefer this with fewer instruments as they tend to drown out the vocal. Give me a viol and lute any day.
Lewis, I have to strongly disagree. In this case, despite the number of the musicians and complexity of the orchestra, the arrangement is unexpectedly "simple" and lightweight.

Not autentic but such beautiful
Beauty is *always* authentic !
Her voice is beautiful, but I wasn’t crazy about some of the interpretive choices. Also, the violin flourishes didn’t fit Dowland’s style, and were too Italianate for my taste. Still, some really lovely moments!
More than a little 'over orchestrated'.
wow I didn't expect this to be so good! Shame about the breath control but good interpretation

Le merveilleux et sentimental song de Dowland ne gagne rien à cet "arrangement" compassé. Je n'aime pas du tout.
This arrangement is far too elaborate for my liking. It looses something. There's a lot to be said for simplicity.
...and correct spelling...
Welp music is subjective 🤷♂️ your opinion is valid
Fiona es maravillosa. La orquesta suena horrible.
Yet too much vibrato for the period.
she's no Linda Fox
The word "phony" comes to mnd
Umm...not really baroque.
Of course it isn't. Dowland was not a contemporary of Vivaldi!
it sounds like classical music. But it's baroque music :/
Baroque? I think not! Dowland was not a contemporary of Vivaldi.
Arrangement is not good
horrível ,hediondo ,péssimo ,bestial ,perdeu toda a plenitude, beleza, melancolia e pureza de Dowland
