A useful summary to demystify these terms.
The very earliest mass market slot cars were surprisingly sidewinders.
These being the now rare first Scalextric tin plate cars.
As shown and raced by Stirling Moss in a Pathe newsreel about 1957.

Great info. Wife and I are new to this. We have a carerra track. I retire in a year and we will be building a 180 foot plus long track. Learning about making analog cars digital and what car/motor type/tires are best. More to this than we thought. A lotta fun

Great video, Dennis. Let's not forget some of the other lesser-used drive systems e.g. four-wheel dive systems, inline "indirect" via a prop shaft as in some older Fly cars, and even front wheel drive in 1960's Scalextric Mini's - those were fun!

Very Good. Only thing is you picked the wrong car to show sidewinder, cause its clearly an angle, in NSRs. NSRs do this to lessen friction is geartrain. Scalextric would have been best.
