I was thinking as you were talking about the angled gaps in the beams that no one should focus on it. I agree. Probably the only one who'll notice it, 5 years from now, is the builder. Or at least that has been my experience. LOL

Nice to see Sarah, been far too long! Nice white wash job on the boards 👌!! It's always good for the dogs to give up what is in their mouth even when they don't think so!!!😅😅 You're really coming along with the cabin build. It's enjoyable to see how you easy go slow with the flow, making it a project built with patience and love!! Looking forward to the next video

Looks great. Do faux stone or brick for the kitchen. I think that would look fantastic. I was amused when I saw you put cream in your tea. I lived in Scotland, UK for 4 years and developed a taste for my tea that way too. Keep on with the build. Can't wait to see what comes next and finally see the finished cabin. Yes, the build never ends. lol.

Nice work in this one and that's the attitude to have when doing a project like this. I don't think my folks ever went to the cabin without some "project" in mind... They just never wanted to quit tweaking it even when other thought it was fine.

I really like the whitewashed pine which I dont think is as easy as it looks to get the right patina consistently. Sarah can paint. And Is there anything more satisfying than doing stairs and getting them just right.

Rough sawn red cedar or barn wood for the kitchen wall with thick shelving with hidden supports. You could do some sort of mosaic or pattern using some of the scrap wood from the cabin. The contrast of the white and natural dark ceiling joists looks great.

  • @canuckyank82

3 dimensional slate stone style wall with varying thickness of the stone. I did varying thicknesses of peel and stick butyl backed Italian polished marble in my kitchen backsplash in dark chocolate to cream colors and it gives such a warmth to the kitchen. A black slate of varying thickness will add contrast, increase interest with variety in thickness and will tell your guests that this is a very old cottage. Regardless, go with what your eye tells you because you have a keen design sense.
I really chuckled when the stairs fell down. You captured me and all of my struggles with my projects in that section of video. Great video. Fantastic!

The white-washed car siding is looking great. For the sake of continuity, I would do the same treatment on the kitchen wall with the addition of open shelves over the counter and something like a Welsh Dresser centered on the remaining wall for storage. You might consider cabinet doors with tin panels--easy to make and would maintain the sophisticated/rustic style you have going. Regardless of what you and Sarah decide, I know it will end up looking great.

Another perfect way to spend our Saturday Morning Coffee drinking time. The beams look awesome with the contrast of the white wall. I think the kitchen wall should be totally different(contrast) than the other walls. Ideas are walnut stained planks of anytype wood that you might see on a boat. Or if you are looking for more of a cabin type feel the wall could mimic inside of a log cabin. Brick is an idea too, like a gray multicolor brick maybe with some random black bricks. You can do the entire wall in mirror. Lol.
Whatever you decide it's going to look great.

There are many Hancock lumber stores in Maine, one of them is around the bend in Brunswick , where we get our supplies. It's a quality company and the staff is so helpful. The whitewash boards look terrific, love the look. Some type of smooth river stone would be great in the back splash area , and built-in shelves to the right of the counter. The paneling looks so beautiful nice job. On that wall you can put some fake stone or bricks half way up or all the way. You gotta have lots of cabinets though. Sheet rock is always good with just a back splash. More white wash pine with just a back splash and cabinets would be pretty cool. You can never have too many cabinets.

We still haven't quite finished our cottage style house. I am thinking of doing the wide copper flashing as a back splash. It would be easy clean, classy and you could trim it out with some of the nice trims used on metal ceiling tiles or even some white washed patterned wood trims like egg and dart. Always nice to have a fire safe material around the kitchen.

thanks for the update. As far as a kitchen back wall, clean-ability is paramount. I've used sheet steel, with shelves of the same material (turned edge for strength), supported to the ceiling with threaded rod. It's a bit industrial for a remote cabin, but bomb-proof. The steel doesn't need any treatment. The patina is the beauty.

Nice job on the wall boards. You have all the boards aligned going around the corner and a good fit into the corner. Leave it that way, no trim necessary. For future jobs another way to do an inside corner is a 1" or less square board floor to ceiling, then butt the paneling to it.
For the wall behind the counter maybe underlayment plywood with tin ceiling panels covering it?
Wondering who was the third cup of tea for?

I think Beatrice is so funny, especially how she lays on the hard floor, right next to her soft bed! @50 Acres & a Cabin Nice to see Sarah putting in more sweat equity, how could you be part of or closer to something than to create it yourself. When I finish a painting or mural or a nice driftwood piece, that's part of me. The same holds true with the cabin for you two. (Late, but as far as the light fixture centered on the stove, don't sweat it because one day you will find the perfect thing or things to display in that area over the door and it will look great and you can brag about the foresight you had.) Stay safe and thanks for sharing. Nice job.

Take your time and enjoy. I built my cabin over 35 years and it is still not done, but that is part of the journey. No decision you make is final when you do it yourself. You can always make changes as your needs change and your tastes change. My biggest mistake was doing many things on the cheap and then having to do them again because the materials wore out. So when you buy things like appliances, get good stuff. One more piece of unsolicited advice: always let Sara make the final choice!
