Thank you! Watching your videos is to me like re-reading stoic books, like going to the 'philosophy gym' and practicing the same moves I've learned already. I appreciate the fact that you talk over and over about the same stoic rules, that you show the same stoic philosophy from different angles, that you repeat patiently what you've already said before. Like in every training, repetition is the key. As my martial arts teacher used to say: you repeat this move 5000 times and you'll learn.

I work night shifts so for me mornings are the time I go to bed, and I wake up in the afternoon. But when my alarm wakes me up, I usually have to repeat parts of the start of Book 5 to remind myself to get up, especially in winter. "Is this what you were made for? To stay warm under the blankets? You work for the blood service, you live to help save lives, so get up and get on with it!"
Just a note. If you journal, write with the knowledge that they will probably be read by your closest loved ones. So remember that your thoughts will affect them even after you're gone. ❤
Thank you for what you do to us. I know you are aware you provide positivity and valuable knowledge, but let me tell you that what you do is life changing for some of us. BIG TIME!
Thank you for this. Encapsulates what I was thinking about. Ryan constantly reiterates the same principles in different ways, which really helps sink his message in more deeply. Stoic principles have to be revisited daily so that they are at the front of your mind while going about your day, so that your actions can flow from a more natural and thoughtful place.
My friend introduced me as his stoic friend and it felt nice to hear what I practice being noticed when I feel I am never reaching my standard of the stoic I want to be
I’m currently reading about a lot of these principles you talk about here in your book: “Stillness Is The Key” It’s genuinely been a life changing read so far for me. I can’t wait to get your other books! I had read a lot of Meditations, The Enchiridion, and some of The Miracle of Mindfulness, (All of course incredible books and I feel like there are some of them all and more here) but none have fully connected to me and communicated clearly to me in a way this book has. I can’t thank you enough, Ryan Holiday!
Could you please do a series of videos on retirement? I'm struggling to find order. I have been an early riser, an advocate of journaling, a voracious reader and a dedicated cyclist for decades. I have ADHD and have tried dozens of ways to stop being a slob. I'm in the process of organizing my space and the results have been good. I lack a plan for what to do next. Other than the general idea of doing something for the common good, I am stuck. Thanks for your help Mark
Sounds to me that you are very disciplined on areas of your interest. Im that way too. Dave Allen books on stress free productivity had helped me finding systems for the paper chaos I live in. My system is NOT close to be perfect but works for me. And along the way, GTD along w Steven Covey’s books (First Things First) also have help me to clarify my values and therefore my Vision. You got this!
After reading The Architect of Riches by Alexander Pierce, I finally understood why so many people struggle with money. It reveals stuff that most people don’t even know about how money really works. Has anyone else read it?
Yes, to formlessness, especially when you’re older When you have discipline and order, and it’s not working, more rigidity rarely helps. The biggest area where I push back in your books is in some of the points of discipline, and some of the points of stillness. That might be because I’m older than you. Discipline can be freedom, discipline is also the height of conformity. And saying, self-discipline is no better than saying discipline. True discipline is learning, which means, what do you do when the path runs out, as all paths do. When discipline runs out, How do you discipline a new? Stillness
0:55 I'm actually tired of being the kind of guy that people count on because is always reliable and available. I wish I could have someone to count on.
You have to set boundaries. Else people will just use you more and more. It is not their fault if you are allways avaiable, they do not understand that you do not want to do it. To be reliable does not mean you have to do everything. It means you do what you say you do. Just feel free to tell you are not going to do something, because you are tired, or you need/want to do something else.
My best excuse is work. No one will question your motives if you tell them that you’re working; you could then be available for those who reciprocate availability too. Reciprocity is essential to any relationship ship. It cannot continue to be a one way road.
I just got called out hard. I started listening to this while i was warm under my blankets in the morning and it was the first point 😂. Never been embarrassed by a RUclips video ☠️
The stoic approach, in my view, can be compared to a river. Rivers always flow downhill, they strictly follow the direction of gravity. But when faced with an obstacle, a river adjusts its course, it adapts and finds a different way downhill. The obstacle becomes the way.
I’ve used the stoke philosophy to come to terms with the fact that I will never be able to be organized but I thrive in chaos. I am an ADHD high functioning autistic and I’ve studied stoicism for too long and epicurism and I can tell you right now it does not change my ADHD, that is concrete, but I know how to ride the waves
Things have been a bit crazy and this review of the grounding principles is helpful. I have to laugh too in that my non-office uniform is largely Vuori.....so I've got that going for me.😊
Ryan- Question…. What about those of us who had a successful career, got after it and retired from corporate work fairly young? I find it challenging sometimes to want to maintain such daily structure when there are little to no goals to really shoot for anymore?
Sir, I wish you could present other RUclipsrs work for them. Your whole delivery and speech patterns are near perfect. I can hear you, understand and follow along easily compared to others who have me zoning out, forgetting what they said and not hearing them or grasp what they’re talking about despite the headlines being so informative. Thank you. You’re amazing. 💛🫡
Around 7:00, you say that Mattis says to read about what you do. I'm not certain I know what I do. Or if there are books about it. I work in a niche field. I'd be satisfied with just reading, but I think your point here was "dont read just to read." Any advice for someone feeling a bit stuck in this regard?
You have to have a strong body to have a strong mind. Everything depends on it - concentration, energy, executive function. You have to have a good diet snd some level of physical fitness.
I feel like when I used to be trapped in my head and be self-conscious about everything when I had to be a secret I wrote in journal more but I feel at one point I got free and I lost interest in journaling. Do you have any advice for me by the way, I think you’re amazing this sounds dumb but I think you could be the next Joel Olsteen. I think I spelled his name wrong. Do U know my dad writes sermons or at least helps him do it. He’s a nice guy. He’s not a shit bag and my dad is amazing. I would love to do a book with you my dad He’s a Christian guy. We’re trying to write a book called. You got this. Positive affirmations. I think stoicism and Christianity even though they had their beheadings I think we could all benefit from being both
@troybernal5085 No, it was about a tall guy with mustache. But I just realized is not you, just the voice was similar . Thank you for sharing your content, is really constructive, positive & inspiring. 🩷
Through you, I have heard the story of Zeno in the bookstore. What sort of books did they have in ancient Greece? Writings would have been rare. Were there entire books? So many to have a bookstore? This is long before the Gutenberg press. I would like some elucidation.
How can a person who work schedule finish at midnight or night shift work apply these values in life? I do want to wake early but then I sacrifice sleep.
As a lifetime shift worker, it just means adjusting the principals to your schedule. "Morning" is simply the time of day you get up after 7-8 hours sleep. For me, getting up early means NOT watching TV when I get home in the early hours, but going right to bed, so that I can get up at noon, instead of 2-3 pm. I love relaxing after work, BUT that means I waste a few more hours of daylight in bed, when I could be actually living life- running errands, exercising, doing work around the house... the stuff I'm not likely to do at 4am after working all night. Best wishes!
I’ve always wanted to pick up journaling, but I never really know what to write. I always end up, just staring at a blank page trying to think of something to write down.
It helped me in the beginning to just write what I did each day. Even if it’s just a few lines or bullet points. Then you just kinda naturally start to write more. About how you felt while doing the things you did. Plans for what to do tomorrow. Ideas for things you’d like to do one day. It just sorta snowballs from there.
So YOU have all the time YOU need. You are making the rules. Stoic, stiff, absolute! Salute. So much for individuality. On these sites It’s always “ this is what you have to do”! Extreme order and structure in itself can be restrictive and overwhelming! A person wanting everyone to do and be the same so that nobody bothers anyone or upsets anyone’s day. So being adaptable is the stoic way? That is NOT WHAT YOU JUST SAID! These STOICS were just people with opinions. Live until age 71, with life’s pitfalls. You won’t be so “stoic”. But you might be a human being, imperfectly imperfect. You will get to a time in your life where these rules, can give you guilt about not being able to keep all the rules! Rigidity is just that, non bending. Good luck young man. No one person has all the answers to make life perfect. It is relevant to say. Just trying to make a living here. Are you projecting for others what you crave for yourself? Be nice to yourself. Life IS short, stop and smell the roses.

Bro, when are You going to have a interview with gen. Mattis?
Take from this what you want.. People are different. Science have shown that some people are more productive in the evening, more creative when they do things last second before a deadline. Getting up early is for somebody. Order is good for some. Some people function best when there is chaos. Remember that some famous people used the stoic philosophy and method, but remember that at least as many people who managed and manage to do good things with their life's did almost the opposite. Einstein, Churchill etc.. This is just one way. If it is working for you that's good if the way of David Goggins work for you great. Remember that you get more experienced with age and will adjust better. Sedona method help some people to adjust to life by creating a more healthy and more accepting inner environment, but then again you can also incorporate this method in to stoic philosophy..
I am genuinely curious, with all your stoic wisdom, how do you reconcile with the ongoing genocide in Gaza? This comes from a place of sincere curiosity (and suffering).
The Stoic view would be: The situation in Gaza is 'beyond my control'. There are two sides to the question. 'I do not have to have an opinion about it.' Hope that helps.
@@davidzack8735 Hm. I suspect the Stoics would balk at your suggestion they would wash their hands of any responsibility for justice. Working and living from a place of decency, honor, honesty, and taking full responsibility for what one can do oneself is the approach of a Stoic faced with injustice. They would most definitely have an opinion about it. So much of the Stoic world view if a commitment to honorable action, even if a situation is beyond one's control.
@@gedwardnelson The person to blame for the conflict is the Prophet who said that the Islamic Day of Judgement would not come until the Muslims ki*ll the Jews. It is in the 1988 Hamas manifesto.
@ericgutierrez5708 The whole point of Stoicism is to determine what is in your control and what is not. And the Gaza conflict is not within anyone's control.
I will do it, not I'm going to do it. it's a good way to start change by replacing going to with will. Will is extremely powerful beyond just a word; will is accumulated through resilience.
Your typical day seems both peaceful and productive. However, I wonder who is responsible for cooking, chores, and cleaning up after the kids, as it can get messy with children around. It's easy to lecture others about spending two hours outdoors daily, reading, and journaling when it appears you have no routine chores or other time-consuming responsibilities.
Stoicism is for all walks of life, not just for the privileged few. That's the whole point. You do your job in life to the best of your ability, keep a diary of what you managed to achieve that day and think about your own spiritual progress, like how patient you were, or how you failed by getting angry, etc.
I struggle to see past the nihilism.. I know the universe doesn't care, we are all just going to be dirt in the end. How is continuing the suffering into the next generation a good thing?? I want to believe.
Can you choose another thought path? You are the only being like you, no other one has your exact DNA (other than an identical twin, yet their life is still distinct). Can you make a difference, conduct yourself honorably, and not necessarily know the impact? You are a gift, perhaps you can step aside from believing you are inconsequential and take right action for you. You may well change another’s life in amazing ways, even if you don’t leave behind some other tangible masterpiece.
@cwc1646 thank you. I do believe what you are saying. And I am a maintenance man for the housing authority of my county. I legit give 102 families a better life everyday. I see the difference everyday and i am appreciate... but I can't stop sweating throughout the day and night, I have panic attacks even during hyper focus about, not doing enough (cause I don't see a good future) even though I'm well off
@@4runner_rooney359 Yes you are also a shining light for all of those families you assist! Thank you! I worked providing housing subsidies for people experiencing homelessness and disabilities for over 32 years and know how safe and decent housing changes lives. I hear that you’re struggling with some things - ( and have too) perhaps you inherited or experienced things when young that led you to believe you’re not okay or not worthy. You are! Please seek a good person or group to talk about your experiences and worries - you can free yourself from the very understandable ways you’re held back from thriving in all ways. I realized CPTSD applied to my life and am working to liberate myself more and more. I believe you can find this for yourself as well. You’ve got this!
@@4runner_rooney359 Why would you feel you are not 'doing enough'? The whole point of Stoicism is to journal every evening about what you achieved that day and how you improved your own character and virtue, and did your best for your fellow men as well. You should be proud of yourself for what you have managed to do and sleep at night with satisfaction at the fact that you managed to improve the ugly world a little.
Must be nice to have time to meditate, journal, and read. I work 12 hr night shifts. I have to leave work in a hurry just to make it to my second job. 😂 Nah but being stoic is the way I just don't think it has to be exact. Remember Marcus was an emperor he could do what ever he wanted so he had plenty of time to meditate and reflect and shape himself into the man he wanted.😅
I hear ya. First off, thanks for the hard work! What worked me with crazy shifts was focusing less on the amount of time and more just doing it. For reading I got Audible for my commute. There are other free resources out there. For meditation, I listen to a few different apps right before bed- sometimes for 3 minutes, but it still counts. Last, journaling is the toughest. I’ll do entries on Evernote or one note when I have time throughout the day. Several entries add up.
Hold on a minute: are his video's about his superficial interpretation of Stoism or just a platform for subliminal advertising in which he's trying to sell more of his books and products?

Rigidity is just that, non bending. Good luck young man. No one person has all the answers to make life perfect. It is relevant to say. Just trying to make a living here. Are you projecting for others what you crave for yourself? Be nice to yourself. Life IS short, stop and smell the roses.
Bro, when are You going to have a interview with gen. Mattis?

Ryan’s book the lives of the stoics
I needed this. Ryan, excellent.
I love your stuff but omg the ads!
What language is the stoci that you talk about?
Who’s committing that genocide?
@@gedwardnelson The person to blame for the conflict is the Prophet who said that the Islamic Day of Judgement would not come until the Muslims ki*ll the Jews. It is in the 1988 Hamas manifesto.
@ericgutierrez5708 The whole point of Stoicism is to determine what is in your control and what is not. And the Gaza conflict is not within anyone's control.

What do you think about dark philosophy?
I prefer a big tub in the marketplace.

I don’t know why I have a hard time watching Ryan’s videos to the end. It’s like I get bored by the end of the video..
I will do it, not I'm going to do it. it's a good way to start change by replacing going to with will. Will is extremely powerful beyond just a word; will is accumulated through resilience.
I'm here first, and I appreciate your content.
How do you remember all this shit when you’re going through the day lol. This is like fifty different things at once 😂
So are you saying the people with executive dysfunction ie most neurodivergent ppl are inferior?
@davidzack8735 i believe it's because this human vessel wants to reproduce. And I'm not making any forward progress on that aspect...
It's hard to hear all these advices, while struggling with ADHD symptoms. If feels impossible to achieve.
Jokes on you I'm already wearing vuori

Get up early?! 😮
how long do you think you can get away with repackaging the same information over and over? i hope you understand that this can't go on forever.
