This video perfectly captures the essence of Stoicism-focusing on what we can control and letting go of what we can't. It's a powerful reminder that adversity is a part of life, but how we respond defines who we are. Anyone else feel like they need this mindset daily? 🙌✨
One of my things. . . .Don't tell people your good ideas because they will either tell you it's a bad idea and make you second guess yourself or they will tell you it's a great idea and you will get that praise without doing any work. Both of these things will stop you from acting out your goal
@@franciscogallegos7936 Exactly that happened to me, by a fake friend, but luckily her drunk husband spilled the beans during one of our bar hopping nights out after she had passed out! Just found out my partner of 3 years was cheating on me with my best friend of 4 years. Been turning to your videos and others to help get through it. I don't think you can plan for anything in life. I used to think I could prepare for any scenario, but some things you just don't ever expect to happen. I never thought the two people who I thought cared and loved me could easily betray me like it was nothing. I want to pour the hurt and betrayal energy into something positive rather than self hatred.
The obstacle is the way. I listen to your content daily, even relistening episodes when i have the need. Ever since i started listening i started gathering the tools and awareness to deal with life. Love you brother, thank you for the work you do for the community.
Yes, we are going through hard things. In addition to Cal Newport, I belong to THE ONE THING COMMUNITY, great people. I gifted a set of Ryan's books to my brother and myself.
I really appreciate your videos. It's a mainstay of my daily routine. I'm a homeschool mom of 6 and I've been sharing your lessons to my kids, other homeschool kids, friends and family. I'm currently using your videos to teach an intro to the stoics to other homeschool teens. Making a difference every day. Thank you Ryan.
This approach harks back to ancient philosophers. Every facet of the philosophy they crafted was aimed at reshaping, preparing, and strengthening them for forthcoming challenges. Many viewed themselves as mental athletes - after all, the brain is a muscle like any other active tissue. It can be built up and toned through the right exercises. With time, their muscle memory developed to the point where they could intuitively respond to every situation, particularly obstacles. This describes a natural and adaptable process of personal and mental development. Instead of merely acquiring knowledge, they focused on developing critical thinking skills and acuity. They valued the cultivation and expansion of their own abilities, making them resilient and ready to face any challenge. This serves as a valuable reminder of the importance of investing in self-development and cognitive abilities, not just the accumulation of knowledge.
I bumped into Stoicism while browsing the net and also found this Daily Stoic RUclips channel whilst just browsing and watching videos..... Thanks to the universe and all the powers that led to it.... Enjoying the lifestyle
‘Persist and resist’-two words that hold so much power! Whether facing minor setbacks or life-altering challenges, the ability to endure and stay disciplined is a game-changer. Let’s discuss: Which Stoic principle has helped you the most in tough times? 💬🔍
I really like the fact that this channel has an actual real person doing it. I have looked at quite a number of Stoic channels, and most seem to just be AI (you can tell by the weird pronunciations of really basic or common words) spouting out stuff. It is great to have a real person with real experience sharing real thoughts. Having a computer 'teaching us how we should behave' seems a little dystopian to me.
A Course In Miracles phrases the whole (rather lengthy) topic as: " It doesn't matter how you got it, what matters how you deal with it from here' .... Amen ✨💝 I Love your work Ryan!!
Love the stockdale paradox example=] Great meditation to start the day[= The Daily Stoic has taught me how to be a better hero of my own narrative. I love the highlight on the need for everyone to have a sense of epistemology.
I never ever heard of Stoicism untill about two months ago. Just as meany thing in my life in opening doors, some of which have leed me down some deep rabbit holes, I find myself wishing i had opened this door long ago.
Phew - I think this was even more powerful than any of your other videos Ryan (and I have watched them all). I think points 11 and 12 absolutely hit the nail on the head for me. Thanks ever so much - you make a big impact on my life.
I guess it's time to buy Ryan Holidays book catalog. I was introduced to Stoic philosophy and didn't even know it. Inread the Enchyridion in a lock down rehab facility about 8 years ago. I was jailed for around 11 months in total that year 6 of those months were in that rehab facility. A great man handed me the Enchyridion. I read and re read that book and had no clue what stoicism was. Found Ryan's content a couoke years back and recently I added stoic philosophy as part of my faith/spiritual practices. This works.
Better help helped slightly more as a person to bounce ideas off of since im a mental health nurse but other than the group sessions didn't do as much. And since i had had other therapies i already had effective resources.
Great video, thanks for sharing. Stoicism is becoming my new mindset. Right now, I just need to figure out how to apply it when the going gets tough or when I'm really down. In that cases i fall back in my old patterns unfortunately. In my everyday life, it already helps me a lot in reducing stress and getting structured.
Great video, Ryan... the whole focus on control is a continuous challenge as we're so engrained to pursue so much that it's hard to let go-but it's so important we do. And the focus on how we respond is so key, too; we cannot control much in life, but to some extent we always get to control that. Hard, though; a constant battle.
The story of Epictetus reminds us that true freedom isn't about external circumstances, but about mastering our reactions. His life as a slave turned philosopher shows that mental resilience is a choice we make every day. How do you practice resilience when life throws challenges your way? 🧠💪
Thanks again for a great video. You talk about humanity's ancestors like Epicurus, Seneca et. al. but I'd love to know more about your ancestors. BTW I have all the books you have written!
I found it I kept trying to conquer this big mountain and I wanted to make it to the top or should I say I had to make it to the top at least I thought that was what it was all about but then I realized I'll never make it to the top My mental challenges won't allow me to make it to the top but I said to myself a long time ago this mountain is very very tall and I might not ever make it to all the way to the top and be able to be perfectly content with everything around me and everything would be perfect I said as long as I'm climbing it I don't care how tall it is anymore as long as I keep climbing it and from that day on I realize that it doesn't matter if you get all the way to the top It matters if you keep trying to get to the top mentally and physically if you don't have mental you will never have physical! Really I'm very serious That's all you have to do is tell yourself no matter what I'm going through I'm going to keep climbing some things I'll overcome some things I'll never overcome but I'm just going to keep climbing I'm going to keep climbing and I'm going to keep climbing that's all you got to say thanks
Do you have some examples of the results of the "divide things into what is under our control and what is not" exercise, from Epictitus or other great stoics? Or some examples you;ve come up with? I try to practice this daily but sometimes find I can justify putting things into one category or the other depending on how I frame it
In a realm untouched by time, where dreams floated like luminescent fireflies, there began the tale of a curious seed, vibrating with cymatic potential. The gentle winds of destiny, ever-watchful guardians of this ethereal land, took the seed under its vast wings, whispering tales of far-off worlds and secrets of existence. First, the seed came upon the ancient Oak, its gnarled roots deep in history and crown brushing the heavens. "Little traveler," the Oak rumbled, "stand strong and steadfast, for the storms of life test our mettle, shaping us into legends." The willowy grace of the next guide, the Willow, danced in fluid harmony with the world. "Life's rhythms might push and pull, but swaying to its tunes, you'll find your dance," it whispered, branches moving like a conductor's baton. A radiant Magnolia, petals bathed in moonlight, awaited next. "Shine brightly and share your essence with the world, dear seed. Like my blossoms, be a beacon of hope and beauty." The Pine, cloaked in an evergreen aura, offered its wisdom: "Even in the harshest winters, persist and thrive. Adaptability is the hallmark of greatness." Upon reaching the Birch, the seed learned of rejuvenation. "Life is a series of cycles. Embrace each new beginning and shed the weight of past sorrows." The Elder, laden with berries that held tales of epochs gone by, counseled, "Listen to the echoes of antiquity, for in past tales lie future prophecies." The towering Redwood imparted a lesson of camaraderie: "In unity lies unmatched strength. Stand with others, and together craft legacies that span ages." The ephemeral beauty of the Cherry Blossom, though fleeting, was poignant. "Cherish every transient moment, for in its brevity lies its true worth." Finally, in the embrace of the ethereal grove stood Emilia, the Eucalyptus, exuding an aura of enlightenment. "Dear traveler," she breathed, "every encounter, every whisper of the wind, has molded you. Now, root yourself in the wisdom, find your unique place, and bloom." With newfound understanding, the seed embarked on its life, becoming a testament to the profound journey it undertook, a beacon for all who sought wisdom. Ava Elise Vedder
Hi Ryan, Can you please tell about what can victims do in a world driven by power and money where they are silenced? Justice is only attainable when there is somebody willing to hear or stand by the truth which seldom happens in real world. Society puts very low value on the life of a person and I have been confused about what to do in the face of injustice as it makes life meaningless, feeling vulnerable at all times to other people's actions and living with its consequences.
The sense of freedom comes from within. The Stoic looks at what one can and can not do. Life is no more and no less meaningless than it has ever been. If watching media is overwhelming and making you feel helpless, then stop watching it. Focus on yourself and where you can make a difference. Even volunteering at your local food bank helps the community. Watch more of Ryan’s videos. This sense of being overwhelmed is many times exactly what he’s talking about.
I dont know where else to ask this! Please help! I need to recommend a spanish version of 'Meditations' to a friend of mine. The Gregory hays English version was too difficult, but i like his foreword and want him to have the same information.
I tend to agree with most of the premises, though I can see where this can almost become a cult like idea. Because there are other ways approaching, and understanding things and I think it’s just important to remember that.
Just broke up with gf. Moved tools and belongings to shed I hired and I’ve been sleeping on the ice cold floor beside a copy of the obstacle is the way. I’ve been finding work in some of the most expensive neighbourhoods in town for bond.
You mentioned not talking about what you are trying to accomplish but instead what you have accomplished. If people asked what you were doing or working on,would you tell them or did you leave it very vague or have some kind of non-lie story?

It’s weird seeing a guy who looks like a human toothpick giving stoic advice. Like shouldn’t he show signs of strength and not JUST emotional or mental strength??
I find it refreshing after seeing so many Stoic videos with craggy faced musclebound statues. The ancient Stoics were philosophers not bodybuilders. And I think Ryan is probably quite strong and fit. My husband is slim with a thin face and is also a runner and swimmer.
