    Take a deeper look at the athlete dubbed “The fastest man in rugby.” The road to success for Carlin was difficult, with an unsettled early childhood, raised in a broken home and foster care. With unwavering faith and the luck to cross paths with a few key people who believed in him, he found his way and has lit the field on fire as he strides into the biggest year in his life.

    This guy was an average running back in college. If they got all of the best a fastest, hardest hitting players, and train them, they would be awesome. Football has so many track runners, and many are over 100 kilo's. Linebackers weigh 115 kilo's and some of them run the 100 in the 10's. It would be interesting. Of course D-lineman in the scrum. Big and fast.

    Does anyone know why he didn't pursue football? Seems like he would have been a quality grab for Ohio State or Cincinnati, was it grades or just no recruiting buzz? Honestly want to know since football seems to poach any and all rugby potential in the US. love to know what made him turn down the gridiron (or if he even had a choice).

      Yeah man, there's a good little video about it on YT somewhere. Basically he wanted to do something in athletics because he was super fast (obviously), I think he was rated 44th fastest in America at one point. Turned out 44th isn't quite fast enough for an international career in athletics but he wanted to do something fast and seeing rugby 7s made him realise how much opportunity there was for him to run in rugby compared to NFL (in terms of minutes per game spent running around people).
      Basically, he wanted to go faster than anybody around him and rugby 7s gave him the opportunity to go faster than anyone else on the field.

    • @Wunel
      @Wunel 8 лет назад +2

      Ironically, a junior gridiron coach is supposed to have said that Carlin was incredibly fast but too small for the NFL; the exact same thing was said about the Australian NRL's Jonathon Thurston when he was a junior ("too small, can't tackle"), Thurston is now the most decorated NRL player in history and spoken of as one of the greatest to ever play the game of rugby league.
      Isles' weakness is his tackling, and you can see him improve every time he runs out. He's already stupidly fast and could easily become the greatest 7s player in history - admittedly with less competition than most sports given how young and small 7s is. He's an exhilarating player and even as an Australian, nobody makes me sit up in my seat like Carlin Isles.

    • @KX5Kat
      @KX5Kat 6 лет назад

      He is, Habana's 100m PB was 10.4. So technically, Isles is currently the fastest recorded rugby player over 100m. As a 100m sprinter myself, track speed is NOT the same as rugby speed though (I dabbled in some rugby too). Sprinters are trained and conditioned to have linear bio-mechanics, we are not trained for rapid direction changes, it's a totally different skill set. Rugby is a game of skill. Speed means nothing unless you have great ball skills and are able to work with your team.
