You have a point about the intricacies of NFL playbooks compared to rugby! The issue is that no NFL player can remember all the plays continuously, non stop, for 30mins, let alone 80mins, especially when you're stressed from being smashed and smashing into others, while maintaining/understanding 'which play' is in motion when you get up from the ground - and expected to join in at speed; over and over and over and....HALF time yet??!!
Lomu was a freak in the good sense of the word. Julian Savea is about the same height (6' 4") but a relatively small 105kg. Savea is about the size of a loose forward but hasn't the speed Lomu had. Lomu had the weight of a lock with the speed of most wings. Of course for sheer speed, Carlin Isles, with a PV of 10.12 (there are conflicting reports, with some saying 10.14, not that it makes much difference) is probably the fastest rugby player there is.
He's pretty much limited to 7's at the moment though. Teach him how to survive in contact and the breakdowns and he'll be a lethal winger in the full form of the game.
nah 7's is his game not 15 ....he will not survive...they will kick high balls on him run over him close the inside ball on him ...most teams will burn him out of the game tackles upon tackles that will burn him out or kill him . Stay in 7's nothing wrong with that...he will be a star in that.

I hope you people watching this video realise that the video is about 5 years old now and was just a Gatorade promo gig. Many of the athletes in the video have improved since then. I also doubt any of the players trained specifically for the event.
Having just watched Carlin Isles run alongside a bunch of other American hopefuls for the Olympic trials this looks like the start of a white man's 1600m. This is comically slow.
Not comically slow at all Turners time was great for a bloke who trains as a fulltime rugby player. If he took sprinting seriously and stripped back 5-6 kilos he'd be even faster. Got to remember isles isn't a pure rugby player he's a sprinter who can fake it in rugby 7s as long as he doesn't have to defend.
***** You obviously have a large family... Inglis is a monster! 100kg and 6'5" is always considered big! Short is less than 5'7" and average would be about 5'11", Sure compared to your family he might be shorter or weigh less, but Inglis is a massive human being.
Turner, Habana, Ngwenya, Isles, Maitland (probably others I've missed) for a race. Do it! Next RWC they should hold a 100m sprint event. Would be class!
1.Saab 2.Josh Addo Carr 3.Xavier Savage 4.Xavier Coates 5.Alex Johnston 6.Hamiso Tabuai Fidow 7.Waqa Blake 8.James Roberts 9.tyrone Sloan 10.THE FASTEST OF THEM ALL GOES TO TOLUTAU KOULA
I followed Jonah Lomu back then, and NO he's never run 10.28! I wish people would stop with all their BS info about rubgy players and their so called 100m times because it's all allegedly with no facts to substantiate. The people that did claim that have him at 10.2 to 10.5 to 10.8......it's friggin' ridiculus! They even had Habana at 10.4, 10.6 and 10.7, and yes, with nothing but their gonads to back it up. Just because he looks fast on the rugby field doesn't equate to being able to run in the 10's in the 100m. Do you remember what they said Haynes ran? 10.7 and 10.8 and he ran somewhere in the 11's, They're all fast but not as fast as the people who publish this BS want us to believe they are. Go Manu Samoa! :)
this clip shows us how quickly genuine sprinters can run if nothing else. No wind readings shown but at their terminal pace of around 10m/sec they would be 10 metres or so behind Matt Shirvington's best .......
They should do a race with this start: 1. Zee Ngwenya 2. Dan Norton 3. Marlond Yarde 4. Carlin Isles 5.Rod Davies 6. Bryan Habana 7. Christian Wade 8. Tonderai Chavanga
My point was kind of that in building for rugby, he probably won't be able to maintain that speed at the same level, but then he might through technique improvements. I don't doubt that he'll still be VERY quick. Got any links to some gameplay of his? would be interested to see him play. (Was going to pick at your statement: "the only reason he is on the bench is because he is a new-comer to the sport" as it seems pretty presumptious, but then to pick at that would be presumptious of me.)
I agree. NFL players train for explosive speed. But the 'no huddle' offenses do maintain a high tempo. Some of that explosiveness would be lost or moderated in Rugby but I believe that long distance breakaway speed is generally a natural trait.
yeh just 2? average league players are faster and union players are bigger, thats why there were more league players racing.. League easily produce the best all round athletes!
Just to elaborate on Carlin Isles, it would be interesting to see how he went in a 15 man game. I have what I think is sound evidence for the fact that fast-twitch fibre is inimical to cardio-vascular or anaerobic fitness (I think it is generally accepted) so there may be a limit to how fast a rugby player can be and still have the endurance to last 80minutes without significant rests. Sevens is another story and I'm worried that the Olympics may see the Americans with a team of sprinters.
Wow first place time was 11.1. That's incredibly slow for what are supposed to be some of the top athletes in their sport. There are hundreds of U-16's here in America that run sub 11 second 100m. Really would've expected the fastest rugby league player to run at least 10.5 or faster.
SpeedxKills That's ridiculous, and don't compare them to u16 because those kids developed early and train for this, these guys train for Rugby not the 100.
Isn't this rugby league? Norton and Isles are sevens players which is completely different. I was surprised what are supposed to be the fastest players in rugby league couldn't break sub 11 seconds which isn't a particularly difficult feat. One point about Isles, he actually was a former American football player and track star at a low-level American university. His sprinting times were fast, but still didn't compare to some of the fastest American football players that have gone on to the NFL. His 10.15 100m time is bested by Jeff Demps (9.96), Tyreek Hill (9.98), Trindon Holiday (10.01), Jacoby Ford (10.01), and a few others. 40 yard dash is a poor comparison of speed because there's no consistency with timing equipment and running surfaces/conditions. Even the international athletics committee doesn't acknowledge it as an official distance for record keeping.
Jay most of the top HS track and field sprinters are actually football players, who train for shorter distances and more explosiveness/agility, very similar to Rugby. Look at Lavonte Valentine, Chauncy Smart, Jeremy Jennings, Journey Brown, Jahvel Hemphill, all of them are football players. The argument that rugby guys "train for shorter distances" is bullshit, especially given that these Rugby guys get professional training and facilities with training similar to that of football
Hand timed or electronic? IAAF verified meeting or not? If its not official it doesn't count. I ran 9.49 on a school sports day timed by a teacher....Doesn't make me faster than bolt because I am not, I only run 10.78 at my best when timed properly.
It's not just League. It is Aussie Rules, Football, Rugby League AND Rugby Union. This was the race to find out the fastest man in Australian 'Football'.
All these guys were a bit past their speed prime but you can still see how the guys that had actual track experience were way faster over the full 100m. They should have hit up Kevin Gordon, he would have been comfortable the quickest guy going around in the NRL back then. Even Rhys Wesser or a young MIchael Jennings would have smoked Hayne back then I think. Today's crop of Roberts, Gela-Mosby and Ado-Carr would have beaten this field comfortably I feel
26 NFL players have been to the Olympics (mostly for sprinting/track & field). Between them they won 19 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze medals . Including 100 and 200 meters gold medals and 4x100 meters relay gold medals . Bob Hayes NFL player Olympic medalist was also the first man in history to ever run 100 meters under 10 seconds .
I give you credit for Roberts as 1 but it would probably be: James Roberts David Mead Kevin Gordon Glen Fisiiahi Kevin Locke Jarryd Hayne and so on (coming from a Johnson fan)
a relay race between union, league and afl would be a hell of a race. if i had to choose 4 from the nrl it would be: marika koroibete shaun johnson james roberts kevin gordon
Imagine they actually accepted bets for this but didn't show the finish line slow motion. The guy in lane 1 was close and maybe even made it a dead heat

It was Greg Inglis. I had to laugh at how they had him representing the Brisbane Broncos in the list at the start. He never even played a game after renegging on the deal! And did he even shake hands with the other runners at the end? He seemed to just walk off.

my bet is on gordon or johnson
ScottyNapaa You are betting Gordon and Johnson over Roberts?! Don't bet to much money beacause it will go down the drain.
AlphaAcro - The True Alpha Gamer oh sorry only read OP. yeah roberts would destroy lol
Turner, Habana, Ngwenya, Isles, Maitland (probably others I've missed) for a race. Do it! Next RWC they should hold a 100m sprint event. Would be class!
1.Saab
2.Josh Addo Carr
3.Xavier Savage
4.Xavier Coates
5.Alex Johnston
6.Hamiso Tabuai Fidow
7.Waqa Blake
8.James Roberts
9.tyrone Sloan
10.THE FASTEST OF THEM ALL GOES TO TOLUTAU KOULA
Jonah lomu ran 10sec 28 in his prime and he weighed 120 kgs! His run time even qualified for the commonwealth games.
Bullshit
Go and ask doug howlette and eric rush!
Ask also Wesley college Lomus former school.
10.80 bro
2 union vs 6 league, top 2 union lol gotta love greg inlis 2nd last soooo fast haha
if James Robert was around at those times they would of all sniffed lol, jimmy the jet too gun
this clip shows us how quickly genuine sprinters can run if nothing else. No wind readings shown but at their terminal pace of around 10m/sec they would be 10 metres or so behind Matt Shirvington's best .......
They should do a race with this start: 1. Zee Ngwenya 2. Dan Norton 3. Marlond Yarde 4. Carlin Isles 5.Rod Davies 6. Bryan Habana 7. Christian Wade 8. Tonderai Chavanga
That's nothing, I can do 100 meters in 8.3sec, in my 1986 Suzuki Mightboy
Pretty slow
herbie0408 lol..
Carlin Isles would run these dudes shit
different sport bruv he plays Sevens not league or union
exactly
+James Stoten 7's is rugby union, just with 7 players
LIGER ZERO said it perfectly
as do i, but you did put it perfectly
Greg Inglis (Brisbane Broncos)...tell 'em they're dreaming
Rugby wins again.
Union to be more specific.
kobe tyrell everyone knows rugby is union and footy is league
Kingston Maru-habib depends on where you're living in australia.
kobe tyrell Agreed.
yeh just 2? average league players are faster and union players are bigger, thats why there were more league players racing.. League easily produce the best all round athletes!
OMG!! im Faster Than Everyone of these guys, i run 100m in 10.50 sec
im only 16 years old lol
They are rugby players not 100m runners.
lol let me guess. You're only 175lbs?
If James Roberts was in this race he would easily win!
CatchyName,so would Carlin Isles and hed waste Roberts.
no he wouldn't
Just to elaborate on Carlin Isles, it would be interesting to see how he went in a 15 man game. I have what I think is sound evidence for the fact that fast-twitch fibre is inimical to cardio-vascular or anaerobic fitness (I think it is generally accepted) so there may be a limit to how fast a rugby player can be and still have the endurance to last 80minutes without significant rests. Sevens is another story and I'm worried that the Olympics may see the Americans with a team of sprinters.
Too small
Amazing run from Turner
in reality blacks are faster than the whites (majority players) but no blacks racing !!
skin color doesnt matter you dumbass
Wow first place time was 11.1. That's incredibly slow for what are supposed to be some of the top athletes in their sport. There are hundreds of U-16's here in America that run sub 11 second 100m. Really would've expected the fastest rugby league player to run at least 10.5 or faster.
SpeedxKills That's ridiculous, and don't compare them to u16 because those kids developed early and train for this, these guys train for Rugby not the 100.
These guys are more tuned for speed over shorter distances.
Guys like Dan Norton and Carlin Isles have run NFL 40 yard record breaking times.
Isles is definitely "tuned" for the 100m with a pb of 10.13.. he ran track before he started playing rugby.
The argument that rugby guys "train for shorter distances" is bullshit, especially given that these Rugby guys get professional training and facilities with training similar to that of football
im 17 and I run 10:36 for 100 metre
+LIGER ZERO 182 cm and I weigh76 kg
+LIGER ZERO seriously 🙄😑
Hand timed or electronic? IAAF verified meeting or not? If its not official it doesn't count. I ran 9.49 on a school sports day timed by a teacher....Doesn't make me faster than bolt because I am not, I only run 10.78 at my best when timed properly.
LIGER ZERO stfu
Love the two interviewers fighting!
It's not just League. It is Aussie Rules, Football, Rugby League AND Rugby Union. This was the race to find out the fastest man in Australian 'Football'.
10:30 the time...
11.1
LOL nobody even broke 11 seconds...slowest race I've ever seen.
Says the 300 pound man eating ice cream.
What did you expect? They arent professional 100meter runners.
You would probably only make it in 15 seconds.
They might have been a bit faster with starting blocks.
100 m in 15 seconds is actually quite fast...... I run it in 11.8 im 19... only getting faster
Ryan Grant
No it's not.
Now get the winner to race with Seabelo Senatla, Carlin Isles, Perry Baker, Cheslin Kolbe and Makazole Mpimpi
Has GI finished yet?
26 NFL players have been to the Olympics (mostly for sprinting/track & field). Between them they won 19 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze medals . Including 100 and 200 meters gold medals and 4x100 meters relay gold medals . Bob Hayes NFL player Olympic medalist was also the first man in history to ever run 100 meters under 10 seconds .
NFL players snap and have a rest
NRL player almost go for the whole 80mins they are built different
love the two interviewers fighting at the end about who gets first
I give you credit for Roberts as 1 but it would probably be:
James Roberts
David Mead
Kevin Gordon
Glen Fisiiahi
Kevin Locke
Jarryd Hayne
and so on (coming from a Johnson fan)
I want to see Inglis run now in the form that he is in!
a relay race between union, league and afl would be a hell of a race. if i had to choose 4 from the nrl it would be:
marika koroibete
shaun johnson
james roberts
kevin gordon
Rugby will just send down Carlin Isles game over!!
Might have been useful for the camera to be level with the finish line
This should be on every year.
Be good with all Ball code's football league union,
This year's sprint should be:
James O'Connor
Brett Morris
Takudzwa Ngwenya
Marika Koroibete
Carlin Isles
Jack Wighton
Bryan Habana
James Roberts
Imagine they actually accepted bets for this but didn't show the finish line slow motion. The guy in lane 1 was close and maybe even made it a dead heat
events like this are great, how would carlin isles do ?
Enter Bryan Habana, Lwazi Mvovo, Seabelo Senatla, Carlin Isles, Perry Baker, Gio Applon and Cheslin Kolbe.
Well said. The end to that discussion
who was the reporter who tried to cut in front of Neil Cordy from One?
Neil Cordy - "nah mate, this one is mine, p*ss off"
LMAO
When using stone, how much weight is that? Just curious...
I ran 10.8 back in 1978 and was a rugby winger but also ran in an athletics league for my club and bank. I loved playing 7's in the spring.
YEAH GO LACHIE YOU BLOODY BEAUTY!
Next race should have
1.kevin gordon
2.james roberts
3.marika koroibete
4.shaun johnson
5.david mead
6.glen fisiiahi
Tim, if you took a few of these guys and trained them at sprinting for a year what times do you think they could be running?
fast guys but none under 10.50 electric
When this was ran Inglis was signed for Broncos, he then backflipped and went to the Rabbits for all those wondering.
Thanks yes I was wondering
If you watch closely at the finish line, John Grant actually won because he put his foot over the line before Lachie Turner...
Ayden Wright, doesnt matter because theyre both union boys, union all the way.
when did GI play for Brisbane?
Wish they had players from other countries racing here
Why would a rugby player need a vertical of 51 inches? its obvious why the others do but what purpose would it serve in rugby?
Should rename it to this *Top Australian Footy Players 100m sprint*
There are lots of fast guys in rugby but none of them appear in this race
To put something into perspective, Jona Lomu could do 100m in around 11.10 seconds
Jonah Lomu is 22.20 and 11.10 grey iglis 9.50 and 19 in 100 metre faster than Usain Bolt but I'm the fastest than every human in the world 17 and 8.5 check me on discovery channel
If the NFL scouts saw this they would probably offer the Rugby Union boys a contract instead of Haynes!!
If NFL scouts saw this, they'd be disappointed in the lack of elite athleticism in rugby.
It was Greg Inglis. I had to laugh at how they had him representing the Brisbane Broncos in the list at the start. He never even played a game after renegging on the deal! And did he even shake hands with the other runners at the end? He seemed to just walk off.
How fast does Carlin Isles run it?
"You can definatly tell he's a union player"? Good eyes I couldn't tell the difference?
