Tondi Chavanga is by far the fastest player I have ever seen in Rugby!! He had skill as well, top speed+acceleration, no one comes close!! Injuries haunted his career and I was so excited every time I saw him play!!

If we talking about the fastest player of all time, before the players presented here is a player called Naas Botha.....a prolific kicker and fly half .....but one that was also so fast on the field that he made everybody on the field appear too be in slow motion even when he was not running.

These aren't the 20 fastest. Just having habana and kobus there doesnt mean they the fastest. Many tries yes and good players. They get circles run around them by speedvraate.

Yeah, his acceleration and footwork are incredible but his top-end speed is a level below the fastest players
Depends on what you mean by fastest. Players can be fast in acceleration, can be very elusive and be able to step off either foot, can be superfast over 30 metres or fast over 100 metres. The can be very big and heavy and hard to stop. There is no one fit for all sizes and therefore the fastest is in many ways difficult to select.That is what makes rugby fascinating
Big time. Rugby speed is not the same thing as straight-line speed. Players like May, Habana and Wade who combine elite sprint speed with the ability to change direction, take contact and control the ball are pretty rare. A lot of the players on this list are probably not the fastest in rugby, they're just the ones with the right combination of other attributes to make to most of their speed. Carlin Isles couldn't make the transition to 15s because he didn't have the all-round skillset. Pure speed is not enough.

Agreed. It's quite possible to run a faster 100m whilst hitting a lower top end, and vice versa. Fastest should mean higher top end but those unfamiliar with the intricacies of athletics thing a faster 100m time means player A is faster than player B.

Is speed on a rugby pitch three things rather than one - change of direction, acceleration over the first few metres and sheer top speed. I doubt anyone could excel at all three but Perry Baker’s speed is breath-taking.

Kolbe is agility and fast for sure. But for speed he’s not even close to the likes of habana.
his first few steps are great but he doesn't have the top end speed that Habana had.

I saw him absolutely done by Cullen in 1997. By the time he got to rugby he was in his mid-30's. Off a rolling start he wasn't significantly quicker.

Senatla runs a 10.3 with Habana coming in at 10.4 only one faster is Carlin isles with 10.1 no one else on this list runs under 10.5 so wrong ranking if you look at 100m time.

Tenderai Chevanga ran in the 10.20s over 100m and this is well documented in his highschool athletics. But on a rugby field nobody ould match him.

Not very well researched ..... Tonderai Chavanga is the fastest player in Union. Only Baker and Isles run a faster 100m. And theyre 7splayers so doesn’t count
@Tim Tom they don’t 7s is basketball not rugby. It’s catch and run. Baker and Isles would get levelled in 15s.

For my money Patrick Lagisquet, Sebastian Carat, David Trick, Ian Williams, Rory Underwood, Nigel Walker, Andy Harriman, Derek Stark, Iain Balshaw and Paul Sampson should all feature, who were all between 10.4 -10.8 100m runners. But hey Jordan Larmour could be in there 🤣🤣🤣

@Joshua Smith Robinson was not an out-and-out sprinter. He was about acceleration and stepping. His top end wasn't that good. I remember seeing him Vs Howlett and it wasn't even close.

Nice video, but these are definitely not the 20 fastest players of all time. From South Africa alone Rosco Specman, Courtnall Skosan, Lwazi Mvovo, Aphiwe Djantyi and Makazole Mpimpi are all faster than Cheslin Kolbe, who is our best "stepper." Your title is misleading: it's not of all time. The oldest is Jonah Lomu who had his breakthrough in the RWC in 95! It should have been: "Some of the fastest rugby players of the the last 25 years". I agree, it's a little less cool...
Look out vids of J J Williams and Rory Underwood. Berwyn Jones was also an international sprinter.
If Tenderai Chavanga is not number 1 then your list is wrong. 100m times don't always translate to rugby field speed. Some quick 100m sprinters are slow on a rugby field. Chavanga was rediculous on a rugny field. Never seen anyone like that in terms of pure speed

Good video, not sure these are the fastest 20; Adam Radwan is the quickest around at the moment on GPS data. In the early ‘80s there was David Trick of Bath and England who was 10.4s / 100m as a school boy and some years later still ran 10.4 for Haringey Athletics club, shame his tackling wasn’t up to much, but then again he started as a fly half, in the days they had no defensive duties.

jonah was never the fastest . pierre spies did a 10,60 and jonah a 10,90 .
Yeah Pierre was about 30kg lighter when he ran 10.60, but bet he would still have a good mid 11s with his no.8 figure!! Then again, Tonderai Chavanga, ran 10.3 in school and was probably THE fastest rugby player.
