As a learning approach, I recommend playing around with the figures before introducing the checkerboard pattern. And it would be interesting to hear about some more applications of this concept.

yes, thank you, I think you're right ... I'm transitioning towards videos that explain more and go more in depth because ... yeah, getting the idea and showing the applications is more interesting than just seeing the solution ...

I found it on my 2nd try but I just got lucky.
