This was one of the most honest guests I've seen interviewed on any show of this type. Kudos to Matt. He told the truth, Rough Cutt just didn't have the songs people. Shortino can sing, the musicians were talented in R Cutt, but the songs just weren't there. So many of these bands blame the label, the A&R guy, the producer, somebody's wife etc, but ultimately if you had the songs and you were with a major label in the 80's, and got on MTV which R Cutt did, you were probably going to make it, at least to the point of getting a gold record. If you still failed despite everything I mentioned being in place, in all likelihood you just didn't have any great songs. I give this guy major props for admitting the truth about Rough Cutt. There are plenty of other bands like R Cutt I could mention who had major label support, got on MTV, and toured opening for major acts in the 80's and didn't make it that make loads of excuses, this guy didn't. Thoroughly impressed with Matt. I also must point out, there is a common misconception about Van Halen that they were as big with hagar as they were with Roth, or even more crazy that they were somehow bigger with hagar than with Roth. Nothing could be further from the truth on both counts. Van Halen have sold 34 million albums with Roth as compared to 18 million with hagar. In addition, the 2007 reunion tour with Roth dwarfed the 2004 reunion tour with hagar in regards to average tickets sold per night, overall tickets sold for the tour, and gross revenue generated. It wasn't even close people. To take it a step even further the 1984 album had been certified 5 times platinum in its first 13 months of release, it's now over 10 times platinum total. 5150 by way of comparison took almost 3 years to be certified 4 times platinum, it's now 6 times platinum total. So there absolutely was a significant dropoff from 1984 to 5150. People became confused because 5150 charted at #1 and 1984 #2, hence many believed that 5150 was the bigger album, but this is totally false, and verifiable. The difference between VHalen and almost all other bands with the singer switch is that hagar inherited the vocal spot in VH when they were coming off the biggest album of their career, and were arguably the biggest rock band in the world. When Dio inherrited the vocal positionin Sabbath for instance, Sabbath were dying in the U.S. Their last album with Ozzy in 1978 had tanked, and the 1978 tour with Ozzy wasn't very successful. Dio had to help resurrect Sabbath in every way. Hagar faced no such obstacle. 5150 was very likely going to go at least probably 2 times platinum no matter who was singing at the time of its release, the interest was hugely intense in 1986 to hear what VH would sound like without Roth, because again VH were at their commercial zenith coming off the 1984 album and tour. I'm not saying VH weren't successful with hagar, they were, but they were NEVER as big with hagar as they were with Roth, and the numbers bear that fact out. Then the 2 reunions with the 2 different frontmen happened within 3 years of each other in the first decade of the new millennium, and the tour with Roth, and the ensuing dominant business numbers achieved by the 2007 Roth led reunion tour as opposed to the 2004 reunion with hagar cemented the fact that Van Halen's legacy will always lie with David Lee Roth. Again, kudos to Matt. Love the honesty. It was refreshing to see.

Wants You is an excellent record. I believe if Matt revisited that record, he’d realize that the songs are much better than he remembers. The Night Cries Out For You is a killer power ballad. Let ‘em Talk and the funky Hot n Heavy were stand-outs, too. Btw, Dave Alford’s drumming was unique (not to mention how he commanded his massive single-kick kit) and played perfectly for the songs. He is a much better drummer than most in his genre. Shortino and Alford helped differentiate RC from the other pop-metal bands of the time. Unfortunately, their label seemed to have little interest in promoting the records and they were using an absolutely terrible band name.

    • @angryagain3801

Every word u said is accurate. Dave Alford drumming style stood out to me then and still does whenever I revisit those albums.

Rock the USA was cool. I heard it on late night radio with my tape recorder ready to capture it as a kid. That riff ended up getting lifted on to one I wrote at the time, accidentally of course. Good riffs are like likkle viruses that wrap themselves around your subconscious and re appear into your writing... That's my excuse anyway

Hey Matt both those albums are incredible and as good as any of those bands that made a lot of sales. It doesn’t matter how many people get it, if you sold 1 it don’t make the songs less great. And the size of the audience you get, ya just gotta be happy with whatever the size is.
If Paul didn’t have it, he wouldn’t have been able to continue making cds.

Hi Jason, here's "probably" some useless trivia. Salty Dog (Come Along) with Khurt Maier (drums) that was mentioned in this video played with Michael Hannon (bass & Salty Dog/American Dog) from Columbus, Ohio that was mentioned in the Dangerous Toys video you recently did with Jason McMaster. To me, it's fascinating how the 80's music scene in LA is so interconnected like a big spider web. Everyone really did know everyone else. Just thought of someone else I'd like to see an interview with. Brian "Damage" Forsythe - Kix & Rhino Bucket. Hardly anyone ever talks to him especially about Rhino Bucket. I think Brian is in Nashville. There's an excellent concert clip of Rhino Bucket filmed in Spain that looks like it's filmed in some ones basement. Was surprised how great it sounds. I've watched it a few times. Simon (AC/DC) played with Rhino Bucket for a short while but you probably already know that ;). Really enjoying your videos.
