When he went into the drug deal with the Colombians and assumed they didn't actually have the drugs, that was a microaggression against Colombian people! And it's actually the most horrifying part of the movie. It would be rated G except for that microaggression, so it's now rated R.

So from my very first memories to my current everyday life, I’ve become so accustomed to these microaggressions that I became numb to them. But once I hit 30, I had a massive life change that made me stop taking shyt from people. I hate being the angry person to have to tell someone that it’s people like my mom who ACTUALLY need the extra large handicap spot and to please move their car one spot down to the regular size handicap spot. God forbid their back problems suffer 5 extra steps. My mom can’t even sit up on her own and I have to carry her into and out of her wheelchair. A wheelchair bound person needs the spots with those diagonal lines (called a loading zone). I hate being the person to tell the guy on the crotch rocket that that is NOT a parking spot for his fkn bike. I could go on and on. Seriously people, do better. Be aware of others. Flaws in microaggression logic like this are apparent way too often to take a lot of this shit seriously imo.

In Memphis I heard everything from "I thought all white folk came from money" and "I thought y'all ate white folk food" to "your hair looks so different can I touch it" and everything else. I'd still say those are also "microaggressions". Most unconscious microaggressions are because of confusion or lack of interacting with people of another race. I'd say those comments sound rude or tone deaf and to me that's basically what microaggressions are: being rude about other people's identities. I think the main differences here are that A) you don't seem to mind people making these comments towards you where as some others might and B) a lot of people seem to think that it's not a microaggression if it's towards a white person or a male. @@Macleodking This commentary shouldn't be focused on the script for the film or even the right decor in Italian restaurants. It's a video explaining what environmental microaggressions look and feel like. And if you haven't watched the film and you don't know this is an Italian restaurant, this example from the film in the context presented is actually a perfect fit... When people of colour don't see themselves reflected in their environment, in places they enter regularly (museums, libraries, schools, etc.), we receive microinvalidations/microaggressions.
As an aside, the scene from the movie where a black man is questioning the underrepresentation of black men on the walls in his "hood" is actually pretty funny since its a satire about racism.

@@janellebenjamin8460 There are always going to be places where people are not going to see representations of their own people, clan, tribe, whatever. Examples include ethnic museum exhibits, restaurants themed in the style of a certain countries or cultures, and festivals (such as Greek Fest, Oktoberfest) that feature a specific cultural region. Only immature fools and people who haven't been outside their own neighborhoods are going to demand that these places accommodate their perceived or imaginary slights with gestures to their own cultures.
The problem with microaggressions is that people don't tend to follow up on these perceived slights by inquiring further. Simply asking "Could you expand on your statement?" or "I'm a little unclear what you meant by that. Could you elaborate?" could help clear up any misunderstandings.
As for the restaurant scene in question, I found that character to be an extremely annoying troublemaker. Sal was right. Why not start your own restaurant and theme it and decorate it any way you wish? It's easier to criticize other people's efforts than to roll up your sleeves and get your own hands dirty.

@@Macleodking not disputing anything you've said. Just adding to the point that environmental microinvalidations that tell us all that whiteness is more significant, beautiful etc. are around us at all times. It's on the news we watch and in the commercials and movies we consume. It's in school curriculum and in the books we read. We just need to open our eyes to it and know that everyone is subject to this conditioning if we aren't conscious. It's part of systemic racism and the system that is white supremacy.
Back to the movie, it's an awesome satire and a super funny scene. Of course no one would expect a black man on the wall in an Italian restaurant. But if you think about it, in this movie, why not? The owner strategically places his Italian restaurant, not in Little Italy, but in a black neighborhood where black patrons eat regularly and spend their money. If I recall correctly, there were images of white boxers on the wall. Why not have the Ali and Joe Frazer fights represented? Spike Lee's point was multifaceted so yes, telling black people that owning businesses in your own community was part of it. But it was also telling white business owners to respect the community that is buying from you and that black dollars have value. Lessons we still all need decades later.... I'd like to think that if this movie came up as a sequel in 2021, that Sal might very well have evolved a bit and decide to reflect the community he actually serves a bit on the walls.

So if aggression is defined as intentional, does adding "micro" change the idea of intent? I thought micro was synonymous with small, like size....am I missing a twist in the English language again or is this whole thing a ploy to shut people up who hold differing opinions? I mean, yeah, snarky comments are annoying and subtle insults are dumb, but the thing is, people who use these "micro aggressions" are usually too scared to come right out and be a jerk anyways, that is why it is micro or small or subtle. It is either in a joke or the person is too scared to come right out and act as they wish. This is something you can laugh at and pity rather than getting offended by it. In that case, you have won, they are too big of a wuss to come right out and have to walk on egg shells, which shows they know they are wrong and you've basically won....was all of this a long micro-aggression to waste your time? Who knows!

    (2) Speaking too loudly, as if on a rant, in a work place
    (3) Passing generalized and prejudiced comments about mentally ill people, certain ethnicities, transgenders or disabled (as in this video)
    (4) Commenting on minor grammatical/pronunciation errors to non-native speakers (any language)
    (5) Laughing/rolling eyes at people who speak/think slowly or differently
    (6) Joking in a derogatory manner to people who do not use sarcasm.
    (7) Telling "just kidding"/"it was a joke", after passing hostile comments
All the above might be fun and acceptable in a tight-knitted friends' group. But while these happen in a workplace, especially around foreign/nonnative/diverse workers, it turns out to be distressing for them. If this isn't aggressive (micro/mini/mega), I am not sure what is!!!!! I dont understand why people deny aggression.
