I've always compared Michael Waltrip's crash with Dale Earnhardt's crash. How Michael's crash was so horrific and he managed to survive while Dale's really didn't look that bad. I understand about the HANS restraint playing a huge part in it but it still strikes me as odd.

The difference is how the deceleration occurs in crashes like these. Say what you want about horrifying crashes but a lot of those crashes contain a lot of energy being lost over time (such as flipping or rolling or sliding etc) whereas Earnhardt’s crash was not only without the head restraints but it was a rather heavy and instant deceleration into a concrete wall from 160 mph or so.
Take it with a grain of salt though, I’m not an expert or anything close
