@Daniel Evensen I'm not a fan of Screenwave either, and long for the golden age of AVGN, but this is a rather silly comment. It's been what, a decade now? Over a decade since Kyle stopped appearing on the show? People change and pursue different hobbies, and Kyle has long moved on from trying to make a full time career out of music. I personally wish he would stop uploading Rex Viper content on the channel, but if he wants to play guitar, than good for him. Though unless you actually play the guitar, than it is impossible to fully explain JUST how easy playing rhythm guitar is, especially for this kind of music. It is quite literally just power chords, which is the easiest thing to play. But to his credit, he has clearly put in the bare minimal time and effort at least into learning. Also I went off on a long random tangent, but I don't even like the band.
As a musician myself and as someone who's worked with musicians as well as teaching hundreds of students how to play music, I've always found it poisonous when people say "you should stop playing music" especially when it comes from experienced musicians to lower level musicians... I've taught people in their 50s and made them pretty decent musicians and the reason most of them quit is because of their friends telling them "oh you're too old for that" or "who do you think they are"...and it sucks because playing music really made them happy. For some reason people think only young and beautiful people should play music. I've even been told to my face that I'm "too ugly" to be a successful musician. Obviously, it's a different situation for James because he has fame...and the AVGN series is at a real low point. I honestly think that if James was the only one working on AVGN (like the old days) and it was still a decent show, then people would be more accepting of Rex Viper. From what I gathered though, it seemed like in the beginning, James wanted to just have a band to play shows with. For some reason or another, Rex Viper started appearing on Cinemassacre likely because they felt the channel needed more content since rental reviews and the other shows are phasing out. It might be just me, but I felt like you held your voice back a bit when you said "I think they should stop". I'm never a fan of artists with an elitism mentality...and it's alive and well in the music world not matter what genre. I'm sure every artist not matter what field has heard those words before. I think high level artists take themselves too seriously and believe the only people who should do the same art as them is someone as serious as them...but music is good for everyone to do even if it is corny. The last thing we want to do is tell someone to stop doing something that makes them happy.
watch the review i did of their live performance. they went out infront of a large crowd and kind of stunk it up (especially the lead guitar player who must have been drunk or high or both). Also, this is just my opinion which i state in the video. It's harsh criticism because i really don't think it's good at all, oh well, get over it.
@@DancingwithGhosts I saw the live performance as well, not through your review, but on my own. It wasn't good, but it wasn't a total train wreck either. I've seen far worse from bands stuck up their own butts on drugs ruining their careers on live TV. Guitarist was likely nervous, didn't practice enough, or both. Drummer was nervous as he rushed often(something lots of bands do). They did a lot better than what I expected since it was their first time meeting. Instead of stopping, I hope they keep meeting up and get better. Also I am free to disagree with you on some things. Telling me to "get over it" is a bit dismissive. You asked your viewers to comment what they thought in this video and those were my thoughts. Whether or not you care about what comments are is entirely up to you I suppose. Good luck with the channel.
I agree with phoenix here. Telling musicians to stop what they like doing because it is not up to your standards is simply a dick move. Sure, rex viper is not exactly a top tier band, but nobody is to begin with. Don't you think even, let's say, Metallica has had bad shows? We all start somewhere. Personally, I play guitar and love to sing, even if I'm still just mediocre at best at any of it, but that's not gonna stop me from streaming it live at some point. There will be mistakes, out of tune singing, off rythm and much more. But God damn, i love doing it, and I won't stop. How can I improve if I stop? Give Rex viper a chance to learn from their experiences instead of being toxic by telling them to stop. Your criticism is fair for the most part, but never ever tell a musician to stop. Their live show was not very good, they know, you could see the singer struggling. But they pulled off the show none the less and they were having the time of their lives. Off key and rtyhm, but damn it...that's rock'n fuckin roll!
I don't understand James sometimes...the guy who loves horror movies and has said multiple times he wanted to make some of his own ...why did he never try? He could totally do a series of low budget horror and it's in his wheel house. Makes no sense
I think the lackluster reaction to the AVGN movie probably discouraged him from really going back out and making another real movie but to be honest some of his horror and experimental short films are really good. I still love his Board James/Mr. Bucket short horror film to this day.
@@deletedwaffles Yep, it scared him out of doing any more actual movies. He also became a dad around the same time, and James chose the stability of AVGN over the relative (financial) risks involved in making movies.
justin-he sucks, had multiple vontroversies ryan-he is just kinda there -newt-he just got fired for copying the monster madness script lmao check r/thecinemassacrethetruth to actually see all this shit
Hendrix didn't string his guitars with the highest strings at the top; in fact, one technique he was well known for was wrapping his thumb around the low E from behind. He did however, play the guitar "upside down," as in he played a right-handed guitar as a left-handed person, BUT he re-strung the instrument so that the strings were in their traditional order; i.e. low E closest to his head and the high E closest to his feet. This also added to his style - the higher strings had a little less tension than they normally would, which allowed for some of his insane bends.
That Justin guy is clearly talentless and has an enormous ego where he can't stand not being front and center. He's the worst possible thing that could have happened to Cinemassacre.
Justin's problem is his personality is complete garbage. He's a big, obnoxious bag of crap that thinks he actually has something to contribute but never does.
@@user-pl7lr5dn8q I really hope that's true just because it would make so much sense. It would still be absolutely horrible but at least it would explain everything.
He isn't horrible like Covid but, he does bring the vibe down a little bit... I think James just did him a favor by making him a member of cinemassacre.
I feel like Justin’s trying to co-opt Cinemassacre, hence why he inserts himself wherever he could. He couldn’t make it big on his own, so he has to weasel his way into something big so he can live the success he thinks he deserves, but doesn’t.
"I *feel like* Justin asked to be in the band" "I *feel like* Justin's trying to co-opt Cinemassacre" I think you people are full of baseless assumptions, and that is certain.
I remember when people said that about P. Diddy. Not sure how far that reference will go but I think it fits. He was a no talent poser who was all in the videos
people can't stand the fact that people change. They want the Nerd they all knew in the mid 2000s and well that time has come and gone. But they don't move on they make videos to put people down because for some reason as much as people love to prop up creators they like when they like them, they are just as quick to tear them down.
The Power Of Gove or whatever was the only one I thought I was kind of decent. The video was funny, but the song kinda sucks. I have been watching AVGN since it was Angry Nintendo Nerd and I think this is the worst thing he's done. AVGN just isn't that good anymore. I watch it because it's something I've done for almost 20 years.
Yes he's more of a movie guy he likes games well enough but his passion is movies i think the avgn character is based on Mike Matei Jame's friend from college and that James just acted the character the show took a hit when Mike, Bootsy and Kyle Justin left or were fired Screenwave took over production and James stayed on as the frontman, James has had an interesting life and career and can be proud of his success and even his failures particularly the AVGN movie it got made he's formed a band and is living the dream

@@emobassist well he's been vocal about not having a lot of time to devote to newer games. Yeah I don’t understand why the hate. I mean all these RUclips channels with a couple thou subscribers with hosts who can’t speak and have bad hair LOL. There should be no criticism from these bags.
You hit the nail on the head about Justin. I can't *stand* that guy. He's not funny at all, and his contributions to the movie review episodes are dull and boring. I like the old team better too, especially Bootsy. There is just something "off" about this new group.
They didn't even put EFFORT into the band -- showing that James is well aware that the fans will accept EVERYTHING he does. That godawful movie proved that.
I mean... I love his movie content, not HIS movie... But his videos where he talks about movies, love them. Especially since he just acts like himself and just expresses his great knowledge of films. But his AVGN stuff? Honestly never been a huge fan, he tries too hard to be funny and usually isn't.
@@cookiesontoast9981 Idk man. I liked his movie review/discussion shit when I was younger. But now that there is a way bigger film community on youtube it really shows how amateurish James is. He went to film school and has made "200 movies" and he describes film worse than a 16 year old film buff.

This doesn't really have anything to do with the video, but I've noticed people get this wrong about Hendrix a lot. He played a right handed guitar strung up like a lefty. The guitar was upside down but the strings were in the correct order for a lefty.
I feel pretty indifferent towards Rex Viper, I just don’t really care. I get it that James is probably just having fun and all but as far as actual content output for The channels audience it’s extremely uninteresting.

There is some potent irony to the fact that James Rolfe, originally a trailblazer for internet video content that spawned countless imitators, is now just another copycat, with Rex Viper being a shallow imitation of guys like FamilyJules and Rental Reviews being a store-brand version of RedLetterMedia.
He sold his soul to the algorithm devils when he sold cinemassacre to screenwave. Now he just does "what the kids like" and shills products he probably doesn't actually use.

Don’t forget shitting on music covers, while his channel features a super sweet cover of Miley Cyrus’s wrecking ball. Because there’s nothing cringe about that. Not at all.
I am not gonna knock James for the band. He did something he wanted after basically being forced into stuff he wasn't all that into for ages. You can tell immediately when a video of his has passion in it. I don't watch Rex Viper at all out side of the first one I looked at just to check it out, but I ain't gonna complain about something that is free and can be skipped.
He wasn't "forced into stuff". If he sold himself out for tons of money that's HIS fault. Cry me a river acting like Bames was an indentured servant or some shit.
He wasn't forced into anything. He struck gold with the AVGN formula and has milked it for all it's worth - and if I'd been in his position I would have done the same. But nobody forced him to make AVGN videos, he chose to keep making him because they've given him a pretty lucrative career. James is crying his way to the bank. That being said, if he's having fun with Rex Viper, more power to him. It's cringe, but completely inoffensive. Justin, on the other hand, needs to not be on screen anymore.
If you don't like it, then don't watch it; I'm sure alot of people would say the same thing about you, looking like the offspring of Criss Angel and Arin Hanson of Game Grumps
The real shit is that people who defends everything that Rolfe does - specially shitty projects like this "band" - seems to do this only because "is good to see James having some fun".
Literally the top comment, it's like people don't have anything to defend about this. It's so bad that the only defense they find is "b- but it's JAMES ROLFE!"

Yeah, this video is mostly unfair. Why expect a 'dad band' that doesn't have much experience to be perfect and amazing? I mean he's critical about the sound quality and one of the examples he showed was a dude playing piano with an amazing amount of distortion. Won't disagree about Justin, though. Personally I enjoyed their releases for what they were and now they probably won't do any more because it became trendy to dump on them.
You just don't get it man. People complaining and making a big deal out of nothing is the way they have a chance to make money on RUclips. Dancing With Ghosts is a dime for three thousand kind of RUclipsr, cheap, formulaic crying about everything.
I can’t disagree with any of it, but I think that people would probably find the whole thing less objectionable if Justin wasn’t involved. He’s so unbelievably unnecessary to the whole thing
Even if Justin wasn’t involved they still have the sound issues with the studio recordings, the pitchy singing, and the recent wretched live show they did at Too Many Games.
Why do people keep making these constant preambles whenever they're about to criticize what Rolfe does? He's a professional. He's not some child or a woman whose feelings you should avoid hurting because you fear to discourage him.

I agree with your points, except for advising them to stop making music. I would encourage them to simply get better, but be realistic about the likely commercial success of guys forming bands in their 40s.
I bet if I put a 800 dollar fender versus a 200 dollar squire bass into your ears, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference in sound. Don't let your eyes fool you, and don't be blinded by the price. Lots of people think just because an instrument is expensive it must be good, but I have played on too many expensive instruments that sound just as good or sometimes worse than instruments that cost 200 dollars or less. The only brand that make a huge difference in sound to me are Yamaha, killer, and esp. Those sound unique on their own. The rest need pedals to shine.
@@christhepocketmasterr Generally people in a real band, that actually play live in front of people, are far beyond their Squire days. Showing up to a live gig with a $180 bass shows you are probably a complete beginner and likely have no business playing live. Case in point this “performance”. You’re right in this case of Wet Diaper though, because with their absolute lack of talent and playing live through 15 watt practice amps, there wouldn’t be a difference between a $179 Squire and a $7,000 Custom Shop P-Bass.
As someone who recently came across James and avgn I can safely say 2 things: 1. I enjoy his foul mouthed video game reviews. 2. I really do not like what I have heard so far of rex viper and I hope to never hear anything else in future.

People need to just stop watching and supporting Cinemassacre so that they either change for the better or finally go away. I always hear people who criticize the channel say they hate what it's become but stay subscribed and watch the videos anyway. The days of a passionate James, a skilled gamer in bootsy, a hardcore gamer like mike matei, and a humble musician like Kyle Justin are long dead and gone, so I can't see why anyone still stays with the channel.
I rewatched the videoclips and even for my nearly deaf ears I could realiise the compression as hell on the tone and that the mix isn't good. And of course you mentioned the no dynamic stuff, even when I record some stuff I try to use some expectations and all mixing and mastering was given for a normal hearing musician friend who played drums or other instruments parts. I appreciate your stuff on that topic and good work :D
I'm a longtime AVGN fan, though I don't watch him as much nowadays, and I got some decent entertainment value from these videos. But to be a honest I think half the video was you hating a bit much. I was on board with your critiquing of the mixing and videos. You made many great points and even made me laugh a bit. But saying things like "Brentalfloss did it first" as if he owns the market on video game covers seemed unnecessary. That's like saying any new gaming streamer is a Pewdie pie or Markiplier rip off. I'll be checking out your other videos.
I have to agree with you. This Justin guy is the reason I never watch any non AVGN content. Rex viper should be nothing more than a novelty 30 secind clip that appears once in every 50 AVGN videos and James rolfe should be the lead singer big rigs guy doing a death metal voice. Quite late to the party, but I think everything here is pretty spot on. I don't think I'm in a position to judge James entirely because I, myself, am just picking up guitar again after a 20 year hiatus. I want to believe that there are second chances to pursue your dreams when you're older, particularly because of wasted years of youth trying to fulfill family or societal expectations. I think that this project presents to us about what not to do when making a band while approaching middle age. We have to accept that we are past our prime, and we therefore, should not present ourselves like we are still teenagers or still in our 20s. I think that you can still do it ironically. But, I think the band misses the mark in that regard too. The lyrics don't work, and mashing up a badass song like Eye of the Tiger with Tiger electronics just seemed like a bad idea. I think it is cool to see James on guitar, and that the band could be redeemed. But it would need a significant rebranding and overhaul to make it work. Maybe James could go solo, covering the Doom soundtrack. I don't know. As for Justin appearing in every video, I would have to theorize contractual obligations that James can't get out of, or maybe they're just BFF's. I used to be an AVGN/Cinemassacre superfan back in 2005-2006 during my first years of college. But I got busy with work, university, and life as the years went by and I watched less and less. I really prefer podcast style videos that I can listen to in the background while I work on other things. But every time I checked back in, indeed, I did notice that the quality of anything Cinemassacre was putting out was declining.
Justin is the Worst! A 20 minute video on his Stupid Gengar collection is the perfect analogy for his entire existence in cinemassacre. A video no One wanted, was way too long, and that doesn’t fit with the theme of the channel. But guaranteed It was his idea and he probably either stamped his feet until Mike and James caved or they didn’t have the balls to tell him it was a stupid pointless idea
I really don't know anyone who's come out besides Cinemassacre to remotely defend Justin. He's not very funny, has bad takes, and seems to just wiggle as his part in the band.
James is definitely hamming it up, but I'm not convinced that he's doing it with any sense of self-awareness. And, come on, the premise (mashing up retro video games with '80s pop songs) is fuckin' lame to begin with. Especially when it's coming from middle-aged men. Even if they were competent at it, it'd still be embarrassing. And does James really care about video games anyway? Isn't James into hard rock and heavy metal? So why Rex Viper then? I think he figured the shtick would capture his Cinemassacre audience. It comes across as calculated rather than genuine. I'm sure he'd much rather be in a Black Sabbath cover band.

I thought it was cool that James started a band, been a fan of his content for awhile, though you do bring up a lot of good points
He looks like a Nick Kroll character.
@@billyghostal
And Justin looks like he likes little boys.
Rex Viper? More like, Bimmy and the Slobs!
I have to agree with you. This Justin guy is the reason I never watch any non AVGN content.
Rex viper should be nothing more than a novelty 30 secind clip that appears once in every 50 AVGN videos and James rolfe should be the lead singer big rigs guy doing a death metal voice.
Here in the UK, dad bands only appear in old fashioned pubs playing 70's and 80's rock. It's where they excel and you know what you are getting if you go to see them.
Jimi Hendrix played a right hand guitar left handed, but he restrung the guitar so the strings were in the tradition position.
Let him do what he wants, Jesus Christ you guys complain about everything
Seriously, like who fucking cares he can do whatever he wants with his channel
I love avgn. But the bad should be called "Mid Lyfe Crysis"
Why don't you write Cinnemassacre and tell them this stuff instead of making a video about it
why does the lead guitarist have his strings upside down i just dont understand why
I remember liking AVGN so much when I first found him, like, 3 years ago…I liked him so much and I thought his love for gaming was so infectious that I actually nearly bought a video game console…so weird to know this whole time he’s been a roxker
So doing more than one thing is weird?
@@omgbeardriving no, it was just weird to hear him cutting tracks in the studio, really cool idea
Rex Viper among other things makes me feel embarrassed for my generation.
Don't feel too bad, yall got saddled with Reagan and the fallout of that before you had a chance
This was well worth the wait. Great job with the rant.
You were waiting for this? Dude's got like four other videos just like it
I really don't know anyone who's come out besides Cinemassacre to remotely defend Justin. He's not very funny, has bad takes, and seems to just wiggle as his part in the band.
What's that thing on your forehead?
I really miss Mike Matei and Kyle Justin's appearances on AVGN 🙁
BOOTSY
I'm a huge metal fan, and i dont mind Rex Viper, but i think its good for James, he had fun, he isn't a rock star, who cares, its only fun

Even on Justin’s own show Silvermania he was the least funny person
From the description of the full live show up on RUclips: "Also the band had never fully met each other in-person to rehearse until only a few days before the show."
Ah. Well that explains it.
At the very least you've brought Burning Idol to my attention.
Thank you.
As much as I love Cinemassacre and James and what not, I kind of have to admit Rex Viper is literal cringe. If they just simply covered songs and not throw in all of those twists, they would be less cringe for sure.
Justin is like Newman...
You’re taking them way too seriously. It’s not like they’re trying to be big rock stars or anything. It’s just a fun little cheeky project. Not sure why it bothers you so much.
Surprised this hasn’t been brigated by the fanboys yet.
oh give it time... when it starts getting into the 1-2k views it will
been watching cinemassacre for a decade and if anyone can't see the channel has taken a complete nosedive they have to be willingly ignorant

@@professorpenne9962 It has changed, but not everyone sees it like you do. Some do not fear change like you.
@@adambomb138I fail to see a single good change that has happened with cinemassacre. if you consider all the OG's gone, new nerd episodes being lame, plagiarism with monster madness and a corny dad band to be good changes, by all means enjoy. it's just not for me.
You can't call things cringy with videos/songs like Dancing with Ghosts - The Nightmare Inside You as part of your catalogue
I may be a little biased here... but I disagree with your assessment
@@DancingwithGhosts mm i was agreeing with the video because that avgn band is truly awful, and then I got to this comment, and then I was curious and watched the Nightmare Inside You video. I saw someone else also talk about the band in detail and I kinda agree that this kind of band is a little dated. In the late 2000s and early 2010s this would have been super super popular but in a post nerd culture corporatized world it feels like the past for me and not in a good way.
