I read every single one of these comments, I'm stuck at work and have that kind of time. So some things I'd like to point out after reading them all: 1. Yes I was aware about all the Jirard charity stuff while making this video. My point with bringing him up was pointing out how he was a peer of Pat but got way more successful because he had a far superior product (even though it's not my cup of tea). 2. Ok so I guess Video Game Years came out in 2012... it was still a dated format in 2012. Vh1's "I Love the 80's" was hot in like 2004, 8 years earlier. 3. Apparently Pat is also a re-seller. Multiple people have said he sells the stuff he finds at the flea-markets at conventions. 4. I'm aware Pat did a public service by pointing out the corrupt practices of WATA and the auction house being owned by the same people. With that being said it was still boring as fuck to listen to week in and week out. 5. It's true... I am just a jealous emo trying to bottom feed off of people more successful than me. 6. A channel called "Jenovi" has a better researched, less opinionated video about Pat that you can watch here: ruclips.net/video/nwGlRJN8h8o/видео.html, but if you like spicey hot takes, watch mine.... or watch both!
@@MyPixelatedPastare you on Pat and Ian's payroll? 90% of what he said is true. Quit being an annoying simp and go watch something else. Your entire purpose has been being a shill for these 2 goofy bastards. We get it. You have a hard on for both of them. Go watch something else. Also, the irony of you trying to clown him for deleting comments, while defending PAT CONTRI and twitchy Ian, is just .. unbelievable. They delete comments that are perfectly, 100% acceptable because it makes them look bad, ALL THE TIME. Go simp somewhere else. Collect your check from Pat, and leave us alone.
At least you're self aware. Referring to number 5. Now if you went a step further and worked on something original or creative of your own that would be a huge breakthrough for you
@@MyPixelatedPast this isn’t supposed to be that kind of video, a more comprehensive bio piece would be boring as fuck. He gave this guy all the research he deserves
For #4 yeah Pat talked about it, but it was Karl Jobst who deserves the credit for actually uncovering the issue and bringing it to people's attention.
I remember when i pointed out Pat was wrong about something in the comment section, and his response was pointing out that i had less subscribers than him. :/
Sounds just like Pat. And Ian. You couldn't possibly be right about something they got wrong, you're just a hater and they're cooler than you because they have a more popular RUclips channel full of 14 year olds and weird Ian type hipster fans. I'm sure your channel is a million times better, and I've never seen a single video.
One of the only decent things he's ever done. Then they ruined it by getting posts removed from Atari age as grown ass men in their 40s. Jesus christ he cares way too much about what people say/think about him.
Pat is no more a con man that Intellivision is. The difference is Pat got people to rally around him which lead to detractors harassing and doxxing Amico enthusiasts. He has A LOT to answer for.
It's funny that you brought AVGN into the picture because that is exactly how I found out about Pat. IF it wasn't for James, I would've never heard of Pat.
Man, I'm feeling pretty out of touch. My friends and I loved The Video Game Years when it came out. It was a ton of fun learning new stuff, and hearing the opinions of people I watched on RUclips. Also, i believe it WAS on Amazon for a time. I also was really interested in the WATA games controversy and some of the other stuff you said nobody cared about. Video game preservation, and companies not manipulating the market for goods I enjoy matters to me. Karl Jobst's videos on the subject have millions of views. But I'm in that 40-50 year old range you mentioned and people like me and our interests probably don't matter to you all that much. I do agree Pat seems pretty self interested, and not very likeable. I did meet him in Milwaukee years ago and had a nice chat with him though. Anyways, thanks for reading my comment.
The one point I take away is the last couple minutes where you talk about how he's living in his 40's surrounded by childhood relics. Dipping our toes into the nostalgic fountain from time to time is good, but ultimately happiness and life is much more than these past times. Simply fond memories now. Makes me ponder. Thank you!
@@DancingwithGhosts Alot of us face that crossroad at some point in our lives. I know I have with the things I grew up with. Trying not to let it be a crutch but something I can come to and enjoy while still living in the moment. Trying to see them not as better times but times I enjoyed and still appreciating that these times today can be the best as well. Family, work, a roof over our heads, not being homeless.. sometimes life is tiring and drags you down but alot of the time it isn't as bad as it could be. I tend to forget that somedays.
I always found Pat and Ian's "chemistry" hilarious. Pat's trying hard to make some boring topic interesting, and Ian's sitting slouched down, sighing and rolling his eyes before giving some generic, dismissive, contrarian take every single time. Then Pat chuckles like it's a joke and not Ian's entire existence, attempts a joke and laughs at his own joke, while Ian remains scowling and not making any eye contact. That description might come off like I hate it, but it's legit way the hell more entertaining than, for example, the Cinemassacre Podcast where everyone just smiles and nods and agrees with whatever generic boomer take Bimmy comes out with
i did know about jirard, i was more talking about his historical significance on the platform as someone who was a peer of pat's but then quickly surpassed him because he produced a superior product... but is apparently absolute shit at running a charity
Pat is like an actor who should never be a lead character. The best thing by far he ever did was that NWC video with James and it made me think that Pat's career would have been so much better if he were a recurring sidekick or antagonistic type character on AVGN. Instead he had his own series with soft takes on old games and C-level humor at best with poor audio and video even for the time. That NWC video gave Pat a huge thrust of visibility in the retro game scene during a boom period for the collecting hobby. There is no other classic Punk video that people talk about as some sort of golden age of Pat The NES Punk. The only other thing that ever got his name out there was when he and his friend had some nerdy, gatekeeper Comic Book Guy rant on their podcast
I made the mistake of selling some boxed SNES/N64 games to his co host Ian when I lived in San Diego. (needed rent money) I got a fraction of what they were worth which was expected, but he came off very stand offish and rude. Shortly after they ranted about how stupid Diablo fans were for being upset with the mobile game and I never watched their stupid ass podcast again.
He didn't own the store. Some guy named Tregg owned the store. Ian no longer works there. And he is indeed a douche. Not exactly the person who should be the general manager of a game store. Super above everything, hipster douche who hates everything and everyone because his life used to suck. He's a dick. A dick who was about to cry over JewWario when he died, and then acted like a big bad moral policeman when everything about him came out later. Ian sucks, always has and always will. He talks nonstop shit about everyone and everything, and the second you say anything about him, Pat, or the podcast, you're just making fun of them, or Ian's weirdo twitch, and you're just an asshole. He is a full time victim who hates the world because he's ugly. Ian needs to fuck off, forever.
Same. It's an interesting time capsule. It clearly documents the transition of sellers trying to offload old junk slowly turning into a million dollar market of man-babies getting cardboard boxes graded. I like similar stuff like The Game Chasers, which is actually well shot and produced (but you can smell the farts wafting out of those guys) and LGR Thrifts.
Flea Market Madness was good, but I never got interested in any of his other stuff. I don't know the guy, but I have been watching various RUclipsr gamers/collecters since 2012, and when they crossed paths or filmed something with Pat, he never gave the vibes of "oh, I would like to meet this guy."
I had just moved to San Diego 15 years ago. I’m a touring musician and tattoo artist. I was tattooing out of a shop in OB and the piercer and I had become good friends. He was into video games and so was I. I love retro games I told him so he assumed I knew all about the retro community of RUclips. I was so busy with my music and tattooing I had never watched a RUclips video in my life at that time. One day he invited his friend Pat to come visit the shop so he could introduce me. I was completely oblivious to who Pat was, and I noticed that Pat was offended that I never had heard of him. The shop I worked at was right next door to Luna games and met Ian also. Fast forward 8 years later I found RUclips and fell in love with avgn it reminded me of being young and playing games. After awhile I remembered I had naturally met Ian and Pat. Small world.
The thing I like about Pat is he is just some dude. He does take me back to early RUclips, he does more than just blab into a camera but he's not overly polished or "marketable". He's doing his own thing. I've met him at cons a few times, and he was nice enough to chat with. How well people take to his personality seems to be more based on if you lived in the northeast or not (which I do). I think his worst trait is he is really bad at reading from a script, after listening to the podcast for so long it's jarring hearing him try to read a pre-written thing with how stiff and stilted his delivery is. If you find him entertaining fine, if you don't he's literally just some dude move on with your damn life and do something more productive.
I've watched a good number of Pat's NES punk videos years back after I saw his episode on AVGN. I honestly can not remember a single one of them except the episode he had a dominatrix whipping him around.
Pat has a weekly Twitch stream. He spends 3 hours a week watching old commercials (which he finds for free on RUclips) and lusting over women from the 70’s and 80’s. People pay to subscribe to him for this.
that unsolved mysteries shirt is sick. I bet if I heard that theme today, I'd still get freaked out. The theme song/intro freaked me out more than the episode of the guy who could make it rain in his house
Yeah, that one has far and away the most views of any Pat the NES Punk episode (excepting one that was a crossover with AVGN), and is his fourth most viewed video overall! I just can't imagine why!
Remembering when Pat called me quote "obtuse and cute" for criticizing his take on the Diablo Immortal situation before blocking me, with many people calling me irrelevant and wrong because he had more subs than me. Good times!
Wtf the man seriously called you "obtuse"? 😂Before blocking you, did your rebuttal include something along the lines of- "I'll pull you out of that one bunk Hilton and cast you down with the sodomites! You'll think you've been f*cked by a train! Catch my drift? Or am I being obtuse?" 🤣
All I did was ask him on Twitter if he should try the console first before spending every week trashing it. At least then his negative opinion would hold some weight. But nope!
To Pat’s credit, he was the first one who told us James was just acting and didn’t really like playing video games as he portrays. And was more interested in metal music. He mentioned this back in ‘16 on one of his CPU podcast.
@@McLovin_2007very true, honestly I thought AVGN benefitted from Rental Reviews because he had a well produced outlet to talk about movies, like he used to back with Monster Madness and the pre AVGN movie stuff
Not really, James has stated that games are not his real passion and he's more interested in making movies. The first instance was in 2012 in the episode _The Making of an AVGN episode_ in which he affirmed that he exaggerates the rants/comments about the games he reviews. He basically states that while out of character he might not have that big of a deal with the game he "reviews" he scripts his rants to be more entertaining and he finds the process of making an episode more interesting that the game he's ranting about. The second time was in 2015 when JonTron visited his video store in which he blatantly says that while he enjoys games his actual professional interest is film-making. He likes games, when Breath of the Wild was out he 100% completed it (minus the koroks) He plays Mario Maker with his daughters (he made videos showcasing the levels they made) and keeps a pretty large collection. But is more of a casual pleasure to him. His main interest has always been movies.
You're a little off on the graded games thing. There used to be this forum called NintendoAge which is where pretty much all video game collectors hung out before Facebook and all the other social media places existed. It was the only place to get info about the rarity of different games, variants, foreign games, etc. A lot of the people there hated him because he was one of the only guys calling out some of the more "prominent" collectors who were constantly scamming other collectors. The forum was controlled by the very people who later created WATA, who are now involved in a class action lawsuit for running a scam where they own both the grading company AND the auction house that evaluates them. Him calling out WATA is probably one of the only respectable things he's ever done. He's actually been very vocal from day one about how video games are NOT an investment, and how he's against people collecting them for monetary gain, so your statement about him being so interested because he wants to retire off his games or whatever is not really accurate. It's more about him getting the last laugh on the same people he used to argue with online 15-20 years ago (and rightfully so, trust me, I was on there too and those people are the biggest pieces of shit on the planet). Everything else you said was pretty much correct though. He really only has a "career" because he was on RUclips before anyone else and he basically weaseled his way into Cinemassacre universe. He's mentioned before that he got some huge inheritance that he used to move out to San Diego and buy a condo, so he doesn't really even have to work (which made it even more annoying when he constantly complained about being "exhausted" from going to conventions). He isn't funny whatsoever and it's extreme cringe whenever he tries to be. Even listening to him talk on a podcast is annoying because it sounds like he has a mouthful of water or something. He's also widely known to be a total prick to his fans in person at conventions. I don't think I've ever read a single positive story about someone meeting him, it's always "I said Hi to him at a convention and he was an asshole".
thanks for the info... yeah.. i vaguely remember hearing about the wata\auction house connection but just to be honest... that shit was so boring and they KEPT talking about it.. like cool if he called out shitty people but maybe limit it to one episode.. and yes, actually, i would say it sounds like a mouthful of like bread or something when he talks on the podcast lol i'm surprised im not the only one who noticed that
Pat's grudge with NA seems borne more out of, idk, jealousy/competition than it does some sort of righteous anger. Ian called Pat out as a shelf collector so I'm not sure what separates him too greatly from the collectors on NA. Retro games were always going to blow up by virtue of supply/demand and it was aided by RUclipsrs putting a spotlight on "hidden gems". The WATA stuff is more of a push to get games closer to the realm of comic and other collectibles money-wise. It will happen over time but they were definitely caught with their pants down and made the whole community look way more scummy than it actually is. A lot of collectors/speculators are obnoxious as hell and scumbags like WATA, but I wouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
@@jameswhitman5379 actually now that I'm remembering it, the big blow up with Pat and NA was due to a couple guys buying prototypes of unreleased NES and SNES games and instead of publicly releasing the ROM so everyone could play the game, they would hold it hostage and not let anyone even see the games without paying some ridiculous amount of money. One of the guys threatened to beat Pat up over it
@@DancingwithGhosts Yeah he did the same thing with that Amiico or whatever it was called, it was starting to be like the entire podcast was just a weekly discussion about this stupid video game console that never came out
The title itself is ironic gold, I wish RUclipsrs would spend their time doing stuff instead of whining about people they dislike for 20 minutes. The bills can't be that high dude.
Amen to that, Karl Jobst wouldn't have blown the lid off the WATA scam if it weren't for them. And they were right about NFTs, and they were right about the Intellivision Amico, and they were right about the Coleco Chameleon, and I'm probably missing a few other things that they called.
The seems like a pretty critical video for a youtuber thats kind of fallen off recently. He has managed to go this long without getting tied up in Any controversy or any bad blood with other creators. Seems like a decent enough guy. I used to watch the podcast and i also think its no longer entertaining enough to continue watching and his other content doesn't hold up to scrutiny. There is nothing wrong with being a c or d Tier youtuber though. I just think its strange you would want to make this whole video about him and not really have much to say.
Host guy: "I hate Pat. Everyone hates Pat. Pat sucks. Also I've watched and listened to hundreds of hours of Pat and spent time scripting, preparing, filming and editing a video specifically about Pat just to prove how much I hate him. Even though I think he's a narcissist and any narcissist would be thrilled that someone like me was so obsessed by him to pass sooo many hours scrutinising him, and will continue to watch and listen to everything he does just cos I hate him so much" He also doesn't know what a chip on your shoulder means
I heard similar complaints about radio shows in the past. People hate-listen. There's probably a kernel of interest in the topics covered by a host and the frustration with not being able to respond. Pat and this guy would be friends, if he had the chance. They could quarrel, like most friends.
For someone that is not interested in retro physical media maybe the WATA topic is boring but for everyone else is really interesting as their practices affect retro gaming prices.
He had some good moments with Flea Market Madness and hanging out with Frank. That was pretty much my favourite content from him because Pat who was always trying too hard by not trying at all. His skits were cringe, but I enjoyed some of his CUPodcast in the early years. When they actually cared about resellers. Pat would have to try to get anything out of Ian, and I never understood why he didn't get someone else in there. I dropped out during the Diablo fiasco, checked in during the Intellivision disaster, and then Wata for one of the hundredth times haha. The SNES version looked sweet, but they were way too expensive for what they are. I also remember Gaming Historian trashing them and decided against the SNES version.
I met pat briefly at a convention. He acted like he was to cool to talk to me lol. Ian however was very nice. I hated it when they would talk about politics on the podcast it was so cringe. Pats best work was "Ask Frank" and early "flea market madness". Ian's "Tales from the game store" on the CUpodcast was also great. Pat's collection video exposes him as a hoarder, and is kind of a sad reality a guy single living alone pushing 50 surrounded by dusty boxes of games, and consoles. That he will probably never play.
Speaking as someone who likes political discussion, and would've been fine hearing it from them... it *barely* came up. Ian's more left wing, Pat's center-left. Neither is an extremist nor cringe about it. And I didn't know Ians beliefs until this year from microblogging platforms. Again, it barely came up on CU.
Pat had a big existential crisis on the podcast years back when he was reacting to somebody saying his output meant nothing, he was really angrily scrambling to come up with reasons why his channel has any value and exists, that was actually funny
@@temporaryscars From memory it's just a clip on his channel, can't remember the title though, they were talking about some topic then he diverted into the rant at the end. He was saying people loved the NES punk comedy sketches haha
I watched this video a few weeks ago and forgot to comment. This pretty much sums up all I ever thought about the guy, since the day he came on the scene.
Of course Pat is going to talk more than Ian, it's his channel. Saying Ian doesn't like Pat is out of line. These guys are good friends. They wouldn't have been doing this for 15 yrs if they weren't. Also it doesn't matter if you think that their subjects are boring...... most people watch their videos because they have great banter and their comments are funny. Doesn't matter what they're talking about. They have friendship. That's something that we all hope for in our lives. And another thing..... Don't knock someone for spring boarding off of another RUclipsr because that's exactly what you're doing by talking about Pat and James.
I think Frank is a unique RUclips guest in the game-osphere, and Pat/Ian had good takes about game preservation and the Atari/Amico stuff, but after a few years of listening, I had enough of their negativity. That said, if you show up on Pat's podcast, Josh, it'll be must-listen content. Great video
The worst thing about Pat to Me is that He feels Entitled to a Large Fanbase because He's been Putting out Videos for so long. I think the PS2 is one of the Best Systems ever made just because it was the Perfect intersection of Technology and the Market was at a Point where Games didn't cost so much to actually Make so we got some really interesting Games out of it. Ian told a Story that I wanted to Hear the end of but He Refused to actually Finished the Story. it was Called the Ranch Dressing Story. it was a Story about how Someone was obsessed with Ian and made an RPG Maker Game about him and the one time He went over to His House he found a Packet of Ranch Dressing in this Dude's Bathroom.
@@DancingwithGhostsTotal speculation but the Sister could have been the favourite child of one or both the parents, with other various factors steming from that, thus Pat's personality solidifying as such.
The N64 book Pat is "writing" is also controversial. He made the decision to have the games reviewed by a team by playing them via PC emulation. We're not ever talking Everdrives on original hardware which would be fine. We're talking via PC emulation. N64 games are notoriously hard to emulate. Even Nintendo doesn't do it right with the Switch online.
Such a stupid way to go about it. I can imagine it will be like other reviewers who play games via poor emulation. Finding problems with the the game and bring them up when it's actually emulation related and playing on real hardwear doesn't have such a problem.
Yeah playing n64 games on emulators is a ridiculous way to review them for a professional book. Everdrives all the way. Plus how long has it taken him to write this book? It’s been forever.
I think Jeremy Parish's series are much more useful and entertaining than pretty much all those channels. Same with the technical stuff like retro game mechanics explained and displaced gamers. And I like the personality of Retro Bird, Shmup Junkie, Hungry Goriya, TechDweeb, and Big Ole Words better than that older rash of retro gamer youtubers.
I just stumbled on your channel and have a lot to say: 1. I love Unsolved Mysteries too. As well, I have the damn vinyl. Hell yeah to you on that. 2. I like that you arent afraid to give your opinion. A lot of content seems very veiled, due to youtube diplomacy, but you dont seem to mind that shit. I think that's great. 3. I think your filming method could use some improvement. It's pretty obvious that you're reading off your script next to the camera and it doesn't help that you sigh and rush your way through it. Maybe if you just wrote down key points and then waxxed a bit more in a sincere manner? Idk. 4. I agree that Pat is mid. At one point, I streamed through his entire nes punk series as muzak while I did other shit. I've also occasionally listened to/watched the CUpodcast. He's very meh overall, but sometimes that's what can be endearing to people. It's kind of comforting. That being said, yeah, his jokes are bad, he's weird in very weird ways, and insert everything about how he presents himself and sounds. He also comes off as a bit arrogant. 5. Ya think maybe making this kind of content is a bit... idk... fucking mean? I mean, what is the point of attempting to psychoanalyze someone and put them down, when they haven't really done anything egregious? Dude could be dealing with some terrible shit and then he's gotta see someone go online and talk about how he's worthless and sucks? What does this accomplish? Seriously, I mean it. What does this do? I just dont get why we all gotta treat each other like this. 7. Not everything has to be a generational generalization. Shit is so overdone. "Der gen z be like dis. Bruh boomers be like dat. Duh millimeowls!" Chill ya'll. Everyone is fucking different. 8. Not trying to be an ass. I rarely comment on videos. But this struck a chord with me. I hope you find some happiness today and share it with someone else.
The 7 points that you made started out constructive and then it seemed like you just got more and more pissed off the more you kept typing and you lost me... now I think you're annoying and hope you don't watch any of my other content or subscribe to me.

Well said. Terms like "mid" or "mediocre" are really the best ways to describe Pat. He isn't the lolcow that James has become, but it's mostly because he isn't very interesting to begin with.
At least Bames to his critics has tons of memorable memes. Then add in the hilarity of Big Ryan and Justin. If you're critical of Bimmy there is a lot to laugh about.
James is thrice as talented as Pat. I’d rather spend time with James any day. He’s only become a lolcow because anything he says or does is under a microscope.
I never got into his content. I did however check out some of his amico videos and wata videos and tbe algorithm wont let me forget. If i were to hit next video on my phone 8 times out of 10 itll be the CUPodcast. Thanks RUclips.
Pat Contri was bigger in the early to the later half of the 2010's. There was a channel called RetroWare TV. Pat is more of a information provider. Pat was big at the conventions back in the late 2000's & 2010's. But he called out the Coleco Chameleon.
Pat seems to have an accent similar to James so I always figured that was related somehow to his cameo, like he was closer by or something, I guess his game collection is a better explanation.
brooooo I forgot to bring that up! I totally was goinig to as well... who TF in their right mind doesn't like fucking Mega Man? And his reasons for not liking megaman were so stupid.. yeah that was a huge turn off ngl
I enjoy Pat and Ian, and like putting their pod on in the background. Mid is probably not a terribe take, he's definitely not for everyone. Frank really is the breakout star of the channel, just for being the strange hippie boomer that he is. For me, being a more casual vintage gaming guy, it's an interesting view into a very strange world of people and what their personal piccadilos are.
Pat and his podcast cohost banned me and a lot of other viewers commenting on their channel when they brought up a terrible list of worst NES games written by the same guy who dropped & covered Russia-Gate (they explicitly brought up Russia-Gate, not people in his comments), and people in the comments were questioning that writer's (Seth Abramson) integrity and questioning why they were bringing up politics.
"ok dancing with ghosts, i'll be at Too Many Games this weekend.. i just wonder if you'd be this brave to my face" yeah, he likes to do that macho postering but dude doesn't strike me as someone whose ever been in a fight in his life
I used to watch Pat the NES Punk years ago but I did eventually get bored, I'd see a podcast every now and again and sometimes what he had to talk about was quite entertaining, especially when it came to video game scandals and scams he'd talk about but all around, I'd loss interest pretty fast and move on to other stuff. I think I have only sat through maybe 2 or 3 podcasts of his in the last 2 or so years and I'll be honest, this is the first mention I have even had pop up on my RUclips suggestions about Pat the NES Punk at all (never mind his channel itself) since like this last spring (2023).
I had high hopes for Pat after the early avgn episodes. The avgn rub meant a lot back then. I could not even finish that ROB the robot video and wasn’t going to try anymore. I did watch a few of their podcasts though. Mildly entertaining. Your channel is much better for what it’s worth lol
I remember checking his website after the Nintendo World Championships AVGN episode, seeing him getting spanked by a stripper, and never watching him again. Absolutely awful
I listened to every CUPodcast for the first few years.. then i realized Pat had no idea what he was talking about, especially when it came to modern gaming. Ian just got more and more miserable as time went on.. I assumed he stuck around because he made more money being on the show than being an assistant manager at a used video game shop.
I’ve listened to his podcast for the past 5 years or so. You are 100% correct about he and Ian’s personalities. His video game videos are so bad. I don’t know how they get views. I do enjoy flea market madness.

Pat thinks wata is a scam. I don’t know if preservation really factors into his collections value per se, but I get what you mean about it being his golden parachute And the video game years was in 2012, which makes it a bit more forgivable to be in that style. Best week ever was still on the air for a couple years
I keep hearing stories from different people of NES Pat almost getting kicked out of retro gaming cons because security and guests keep thinking he was a homeless man who sneaked in. If half of those stories are true. It is pretty sad. This would never happen with an irate gamer. People outside of gaming RUclips at least know he exists. I honestly blame Ian for destroying Pat's podcast and channel.
The only thing i know about Pat is that one obnoxious AVGN video he was in. Dude just gave off weird vibes so never went looking for more of his stuff. I had no idea he warranted any kind of retrospective but i enjoyed the Bimmy/Rex Viper episodes so here we go!
I love Pat and Ian. I think the cu podcast is phenomenal. I discovered Pat very late and discovered Avgn even later. Love how I have years of content to catch up on
Holy shit. I never thought I’d see someone talk about Pat the NES punk videos. I was into their content for a little bit a few years back, he had some okay ideas. Making a storyline out of looking for the NWC was amusing but after that…eh
Am I the only one who thought Pat was on something a few years ago? There was a period on the podcast where he always looked crazed, was constantly moving his jaws and grinding his teeth, etc. He misunderstood everything Ian said and they were constantly arguing because of it. It was really weird and hard to watch, but he seems to have put whatever it was behind him and acts much more normal now.
Pat has said countless times that he doesn't agree with the prices of wata. if he only cared about the price of his games going up he wouldn't have covered that wata stuff and bashed them so extensively. come on now. you're grasping for straws here.
I once left a comment on his Action 52 episode. He swapped out NES consoles because one of them couldn't get past the lockout chip. I told him the easiest way to get around this. It's a stupid easy mod that anyone can do. You just cut the fourth pin on the Nintendo chip, and you can now play anything. He wrote me an essay on how the lockout chip is required for certain games, and whatnot, but it was clear to me that he's a little more knowledgable about games NOT consoles. The NES 101 (Top Loader) doesn't have the lockout chip and can literally play any NES game in existence. So there goes that argument.
This popped up in my feed. I'm 1:30 seconds in and I have to legitimately ask what the point of this video is. Where's the hook, where's the "here's why this video exists and you should care." It just starts insulting some guy and projecting your personal opinion with no basis on why we should care. I've been vaguely aware of Pat over the years and I have no love nor hate of him. I legitimately don't care, he's just been a background name to me. Like... the vast majority of others on this platform. (Or in Life.) So what's special about him to have viewers stick around for 22 minutes? The structure and script need work. It's a moment to inform your audience. Whoever's your target group, convince them that sticking around is interesting or worthwhile. Instead of (what appears will be) a laundry list of personal complaints and biases. Is there some scandal? Should have been mentioned already to keep viewers attention. I don't like unwarranted (nor poorly made) hit pieces and this feels like personal "tuber" drama. Why, as a viewer, should I care if someone is "mid" when that's the standard I already consider most people existing in this medium? It's not a crime, nor compelling, and every content creator doesn't have to cater to me. I just don't watch. (Which I'm exercising here before explaining why. Listen or don't, find it useful and an opportunity to grow or not, whatever you want.)
I read every single one of these comments, I'm stuck at work and have that kind of time. So some things I'd like to point out after reading them all:

He's definitely more popular than The Completionist these days. ...I'll see myself out.
Jirard is a fraud that stole money.
The one point I take away is the last couple minutes where you talk about how he's living in his 40's surrounded by childhood relics. Dipping our toes into the nostalgic fountain from time to time is good, but ultimately happiness and life is much more than these past times. Simply fond memories now. Makes me ponder. Thank you!
im just curious as to what happened in his life that made him use all this retro junk as a coping mechanism..
@@DancingwithGhosts Alot of us face that crossroad at some point in our lives. I know I have with the things I grew up with. That description might come off like I hate it, but it's legit way the hell more entertaining than, for example, the Cinemassacre Podcast where everyone just smiles and nods and agrees with whatever generic boomer take Bimmy comes out with
Bimmy was born in 1980,way too young to be a baby boomer

The Alisia Dragoon episode was legendary 😅
Also, does anyone else notice Pat slowly morphing into Perry Caravello?
😅
He looked really good with the short hair I don't know why he grows it out these days lol
Ian always has this look on his face like he wants to skin Pat in his sleep and wear him as a meat suit

I don't know why this made me laugh as hard as it did
But it did 😂
Probably because it's true
I made the mistake of selling some boxed SNES/N64 games to his co host Ian when I lived in San Diego. (needed rent money) I got a fraction of what they were worth which was expected, but he came off very stand offish and rude. Shortly after they ranted about how stupid Diablo fans were for being upset with the mobile game and I never watched their stupid ass podcast again.
Pat always came off as kind of egotistical, Ian I hated on first glance and still do. This cements my position.

I did like Flea Market Madness a lot. Definitely his best work that he put out.
Same. It's an interesting time capsule. It clearly documents the transition of sellers trying to offload old junk slowly turning into a million dollar market of man-babies getting cardboard boxes graded. I like similar stuff like The Game Chasers, which is actually well shot and produced (but you can smell the farts wafting out of those guys) and LGR Thrifts.
oh absolutely
Small world.
nice! i wish i lived in CA
Fully agree on the stiff auto queue reading. It's unwatchable.

"I'll pull you out of that one bunk Hilton and cast you down with the sodomites! You'll think you've been f*cked by a train! Catch my drift? Or am I being obtuse?" 🤣
All I did was ask him on Twitter if he should try the console first before spending every week trashing it. At least then his negative opinion would hold some weight. But nope!
Blows my mind he has any fans.
To Pat’s credit, he was the first one who told us James was just acting and didn’t really like playing video games as he portrays. And was more interested in metal music. He mentioned this back in ‘16 on one of his CPU podcast.
The Truth has been out for that long and people still rely on Rolfe to be a gaming authority.
I think James likes games to an extent, but not as much as movies.
And he only likes metal music at the most basic level
I just watched a video yesterday where a guy did a reaction video in which Pat said "we're better than you". He actually said that.
lol unsurprising
That was Jeremy from the Quartering.
Politics is what made me unsub from CUP after watching it for years.
I met Pat at a convention 6 years ago and he was very nice when I met him

Don't knock someone for spring boarding off of another RUclipsr because that's exactly what you're doing by talking about Pat and James.
Pat is so mid that other RUclipsrs go out of their way to make videos about him. Makes sense.
Great video
The irony is that Frank had no interest in video games.

Pat *radiates* needy only child energy
yet he has a sister lol 😂 but you right
@@DancingwithGhostsTotal speculation but the Sister could have been the favourite child of one or both the parents, with other various factors steming from that, thus Pat's personality solidifying as such.
Do you think his sister is available? Marring her would get someone very close to that NES collection, heh, heh...@@Hobojoe4464
@@Hobojoe4464Pat has some trauma about his dad not giving him enough if any credit for his achievements. That pops up pretty often through CUPodcast

Awaiting Pat's appearance in the comments or a mention on the now very infrequent CUPodcast...
lol yep.. but Pat cares about clout so this video would have to hit at least 50k for him to talk about it i think
The fact that that rates as "controversy" is hilarious
I think Jeremy Parish's series are much more useful and entertaining than pretty much all those channels. Same with the technical stuff like retro game mechanics explained and displaced gamers.
And I like the personality of Retro Bird, Shmup Junkie, Hungry Goriya, TechDweeb, and Big Ole Words better than that older rash of retro gamer youtubers.
Pat the CM Punk
“And then they butchered my corn hole.” Pat the NES Punk, Intellivision Amico Unboxing DECEPTION - March 30, 2022. Time stamp - 18:18
I just stumbled on your channel and have a lot to say:
@@DancingwithGhosts aaaand that explains 10k subs in 8 years. Lol have a good one.
@@dustysocarras6425 well it looks like you tried to have a youtube channel and failed so you scrubbed all of your videos and now critique other youtubers who are way bigger than you and who did not give up, so yeah, you also have a good one jackass

If you ever decide to do a John Hancock or MetalJesusRocks video, I have a bunch of dirt on them that has since been deleted from youtube
I want to hear what d-bag stuff they did!
Was trying to crowdfund a vacation for his whole crew a part of the dirt? lol
@@alexvergara1487 John Hancock used to do these livestreams where he would totally shit on other collectors, completely opposite from his phony "nice guy" persona. There was a channel dedicated to exposing him who would listen to every stream and repost the clips. I met him once and he was unpleasant at best. The retro game community is full of people like him. I still like playing old games but I just share it with my friends and have a library for that purpose.
@@HiGlowietrue...James is at least likable

Pat Contri was bigger in the early to the later half of the 2010's. There was a channel called RetroWare TV. Pat is more of a information provider. Pat was big at the conventions back in the late 2000's & 2010's. But he called out the Coleco Chameleon.
Pat seems to have an accent similar to James so I always figured that was related somehow to his cameo, like he was closer by or something, I guess his game collection is a better explanation.
Both from Jersey
yeah they both from jersey but pat already lived in san diego by the time of that collab so he still had to fly out there
Never liked pat's written skits/episodes but i could listen to him jersey-rage about the minutia of ebay policies all day long
I don’t trust any NES collector that doesn’t like Mega Man. Like wtf
brooooo I forgot to bring that up!
I can just hear Pat going "Buuuuuh say it to my face, say it to my face!"
"ok dancing with ghosts, i'll be at Too Many Games this weekend.. i just wonder if you'd be this brave to my face" yeah, he likes to do that macho postering but dude doesn't strike me as someone whose ever been in a fight in his life
Pat does know more about retro games than just about anyone. He's very very niche. His books are excellent.
I could tell by Pats horrible acting that his channel wouldn't be worth even more of my time - wasting.
I remember checking his website after the Nintendo World Championships AVGN episode, seeing him getting spanked by a stripper, and never watching him again. Absolutely awful
@@red7078 😂 being in Pat's video as the dominatrix was probably the most humiliating thing she's had to do in her field

I listened to every CUPodcast for the first few years.. then i realized Pat had no idea what he was talking about, especially when it came to modern gaming. Ian just got more and more miserable as time went on.. I assumed he stuck around because he made more money being on the show than being an assistant manager at a used video game shop.

This is one of the most genuine impression videos I have ever seen, I’ve followed Pat the NES Punk during his hey days even prior to those collaboration videos with James Rolphe and this video is an accurate 1:1 description of the guy, I’m yet to see a single youtuber who ever collaborated with Pat in any shape or form and didn’t end up hating the guy, he’s a narcissist asshole.
Pat thinks wata is a scam. I don’t know if preservation really factors into his collections value per se, but I get what you mean about it being his golden parachute
And the video game years was in 2012, which makes it a bit more forgivable to be in that style. Best week ever was still on the air for a couple years
To my knowledge pats 3 biggest accomplishments are the avgn colab, appearing on pawn stars, and his website helped launch game theory
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn lol
What an insane comment
The only thing I remember about Pat is he had a porn actress star in one of his reviews. Yeah.
Well you're wrong about the humor part. His early NES punk stuff was the funniest of all the 2000's game reviews IMO.
I loved the video game years. I first saw it on Amazon so he must have sold it to them.
I remember that too
Pat had the audacity to say that avgn had little impact on his sucksess
Pat has said countless times that he doesn't agree with the prices of wata. if he only cared about the price of his games going up he wouldn't have covered that wata stuff and bashed them so extensively. come on now. you're grasping for straws here.
Uh oh. 😂 I like Pat. Making a lot of hot takes recently lol
I love pats videos but he is too Petty
The only games a top loader can't play are ones designed to circumvent the lockout chip, and even those have switches to change that.
