Hey Nerd, how about, for next Halloween, an episode about "Zombies ate my neighbors"? I think there's a ton of stuff from the game that could work for an AVGN episode
Hey James I love how you picked The Immortal for an AVGN Episode it is one of my favorite games of my child hood the game is not all that bad lol you're still my favorite AVGN nerd you got me hyped up to play it. I am going to do a full game play through it's been a long time I haven't played it. There is a level that you can meet the developers of the game if you find the coffee pot and give it to them they will ask you to find it it's pretty cool I love the hard work you do with every episode keep them coming.
It took me a while but I get it. This was all done in one take, because that’s how you have to play the game! One small error, and the whole take is ruined. Start over from the beginning James said “you wanna play that way, immortal? Bring it on!”
It's heartwarming to see James staying true to himself and actively using his expertise in filmmaking, doing something he enjoys, all while bringing us amazing content.
AVGN is literally a pioneer ancestor of RUclips game reviewers. I remember watching his content when it was on *ScrewAttack* before any of these social media platforms took off. lol
The avgn may just be a guy complaining about games but behind him is James a man so devoted he filmed an entire episode of the nerd reciting a soliloquy in a custom built set done in one take. Now that’s a filmmaker
I like to think the title of the game "The Immortal" is an allegory to the fact that every time the player dies he still has the knowledge of what killed him previously, thus he can survive it the second time. The name is a play on the trial and error aspect of the game, a man who dies over and over but overcomes the odds due to his past life's knowledge of how to succeed.
It also might be referring to the villain, who had been trapped in a struggle with that dragon and had NEVER killed it, he could only gain immortality and get it to follow commands.
Just finished it, it's actually pretty good and pretty forgiving too, 3 lives where you star at the previous room and game over means doing the whole level again, which aren't very long anyways
It's incredibly meta: in The Immortal, you have to complete each chapter in one unbroken take with absolutely no room for errors... kinda like, say, this video!
James my man, I made a Korean subtitle for this episode, apparently RUclips Community Caption needs authorisation from the Creater to be shown, Please authorise my subtitle, many koreans are waiting!
Anyone can string together a video with jump cuts, where the creator is just standing in front of a static camera. James Rolfe built a complete set, then filmed a dynamic performance in one take. ONE. TAKE.

@John James Rambo Really dude? Are you going that route? Why so pedantic? Are you a addicted to arguing with people on the internet? In that case, I will need you to correct your statement. You see, there are actually multiple cuts in the review as well. The whole thing is nothing but an array of 30 frames per second (or maybe 60, I can't tell cause I watched on mobile), so in reality each second of the review it is just constant cutting between a couple of still images.
I think it’s all the more impressive if there were cuts and we can’t figure out where they were. I loved the Immortal, but I only ever played it on the Genesis.
I don'tz like the new style like standing next to the tv and talking about the game instead of only showing the game and make it appear like he is playing it while cursing
Version with gore is more enjoyable. At the time there was several games using this "trying to avoid death" motive. One titled Another World is in fact one of best games on Amiga. But playing without gore and unbalanced game like this could be horrible. It is why I do consider Battle Chess as one of best 8-bit era Murder Porn's. Due to its design you have vast number of deaths and didn't really risk stucking or frustration. Then later we have Mortal Combat and finally Fallout (though game was so great that not many people even pay attention to this aspect).
They were thinking people could figure out the incredibly simple but fun combat system. It's getting really tiresome to hear James complaining that games are "button mashers". This one is 100% not that.
@@saltidog86 Wtf are you talking about? The "timing" is how you dodge and attack. You see the orc swinging right, you dodge left before he can hit you. He swings left, dodge right. It's the same with attacking. How is it a button masher when a good player can take zero damage in fights?
The handheld video camera following him confused me quite a bit, as I am so used to him just talking to the camera as The Nerd. The point of this video was that it was written as if it was play from the days of olde. That’s why it’s a single take. Definitely different from the nerds usual formula but I found it entertaining regardless, kinda cool actually.
He did something similar with Polybius last year! Both seem to be in the style of a certain type horror film/performance. Hopefully this means we'll see more content in different horror genre styles in the future! A new AVGN Halloween tradition, maybe?
@@Sabamika1 No it doesn't. All games are about trial and error, all have speedruns, and all you're saying is that it isn't as hard as it's made out to because you said so.
@@Sabamika1 The "Nerd" character has always reviewed shitty games. It may not be that hard, but the way this port plays out is what makes it a bad title. It's a game based purely on memorization. That's not fun.
@@Sabamika1 No, I say you're wrong because your points are weak. Otherwise, I wouldn't have pointed out what was wrong with your points. Pointing out weaknesses in what you say isn't "nuh uh". What game isn't about trial and error? That's conveniently vauge and means nothing.
Hated that game so much when I was a kid. Couldn't understand how to play this god damn game. Anyway... That was a very creative way of doing a review. Love the theatrical flavor of it. Very nice backgrounds too!
I love how this episode, by its long difficult take, is metaphorically suggesting the pain a player has to go through to finish a game: an uninterrupted sequence of flawless actions, that only when performed without any errors, leads to success.
He should've done a regular episode and inserted this epic tale of one take adventure after, I didn't like that much as well and watched te whole thing at 2x speed
Definitely a solid effort managing to film everything in one shot! Sadly I kept getting distracted by a major visible reliance on offscreen cue cards.. like I get it, just felt it pretty negatively affected the delivery. =(
It was definitely a cool idea. You can tell he's got a lot of cue cards to read from, but it helped the overall impression of him not missing a beat. I liked it.
It was impressive from a cinema standpoint and as a experimental piece, but didn't get much out of it personally. The Polybius review was different too but at least I found myself more invested in "the story." Nice work here anyway.
I was thinking the same when i see you comment and bring me, what is he do a exact polybius? will be better? then i think the problem is that this is an anual thing special, i'll love this were monthly
I feel the opposite way. Polybius had an incredible anticipation but I didn't feel there was a good payoff (it went exactly how you thought it would go). This is entertaining as a self-contained piece.

It was all done in one take, from the nerd entering the dungeon to the end. Basically as live as you can get in a video lol.
At a haunted house.
Yea, but i would prefer to watch it like the old version
James pushed the envelope this time.
@@titantron5840 Well it's trying something new which I like. The video rental stuff I don't like at all, this change didn't work very well either.. too obviously scripted and read from autocue

What an interesting premise this time. A real time one-shot, almost like walking through a Halloween haunt.
Very cool.
Amazing 👌
I don’t know why, but this video felt very off to me.
Matthew Hollowell yeah, it didnt feel like avgn. the one shot takes away from the charachter, and makes it obvious its james acting, not the nerd.
Comrades across the Cosmos agreed. It wasn’t necessarily bad, but it didn’t feel like the Nerd
The point of this video was that it was written as if it was play from the days of olde. That’s why it’s a single take. Definitely different from the nerds usual formula but I found it entertaining regardless, kinda cool actually.
This has to be the most technically impressive episode yet. I would LOVE to see a behind the scenes video.
Behind the scenes would be awesome!
Turns out the immortal is now found out to be a “classic” nes game. it’s coming to the switch’s nes online thing.
so it was basically a play and done in one take
yes, this is a series trying new things and taking risks, that's cool and awesome
He did something similar with Polybius last year! Both seem to be in the style of a certain type horror film/performance. Hopefully this means we'll see more content in different horror genre styles in the future! A new AVGN Halloween tradition, maybe?
Except it sucked ass.
"What art thou thinking!" - CLASSIC!

dnjc2010 there could be an outtake when he ducked a little too fast with the dragon at the end and he had to repeat the whole thing
So many potential outtakes...
This is seriously one of the best AVGN episodes ever made. A mix of cinema and Shakespearean theatre all in one take. Really impressive!
If Shakespeare was a gamer. But foreal, that monolog was impressive. Not a single cut
Cory Tanksley true that
He seems to have a teleprompter. @2:00 he starts looking above for a refresher. Still impressive in one take though.

Hated that game so much when I was a kid. Couldn't understand how to play this god damn game.

That was a very creative way of doing a review. Love the theatrical flavor of it. Very nice backgrounds too!

Ye olde English because that's the way the in game text is. It fits with the theme of the video perfectly.
Definitely a solid effort managing to film everything in one shot! Sadly I kept getting distracted by a major visible reliance on offscreen cue cards.. like I get it, just felt it pretty negatively affected the delivery. =(
