    "OGT" means "OG TOOL Fan". This song is basically a Maynard diss track where he is dissing a supposed TOOL fan who was complaining to Maynard that they sold out to the record company and changed their sound. This is still one of my favorite diss tracks of any genre. Next to NAS' song Ether where he was dissing JAY-Z. lol

      This is something every Hard Rock/ Metal bands has to deal with. Some of the people who supported you at the beginning become so attached to the idea they are among the few who know this great band that the minute the great band they supposedly love starts getting to much attention they turn on them.
      Sure the band might have changed a bit over time as all bands do. It doesn't mean they made those changes to be more popular it just means their talent and tastes evolved. Music is an art form and you wouldn't expect a painter to keep drawing the same picture over and over so why do people expect musical acts to stay in a very narrow style of song type?

The part where he says 'Send more money' leads me to suggest 'Send Me Your Money' by Suicidal Tendencies.I won't spoil it but I have to mention that album features Robert Trujlllo on bass. He now plays with Metallica (but you knew that) I personally think his days with Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves was a better musical fit for his bass playing prowess.

    The point I take from the song is we are all sells outs or hookers so to speak.
    What matters is what you sell and what you get in return.
    Maynard sells his voice and talent, in return he gets money and fame.
    The guy in the song sells his image, the guy is a billboard for main brands, in return he gets some illusion of popularity.
    It does not matter what you sell, your voice, your labor, your talent, even your body.
    What matters is are you receiving some thing of equal or greater value to what you sell?

    Im new to these guys/this channel, but I think I have fallen for Brad (not in that "Robert Plant angle" way). I honestly rarely care for reaction videos, because Im the kind of guy who likes to know what the lyrics are and what they mean as much as I appreciate a "beat that slaps" or something....especially if you are going to be "reacting to" a song or a band like Tool or Pearl Jam etc. Brad is the only reactor I have seen who could catch 46&2 being a song about Jungian philosophy and who can think through some of the metaphors (The Pot...."my black kettle"). Like Brad, Ive also been the kind of guy who likes a good band/song that is mellow enough that i can just hear some good simple music and some good lyrics that I can make out. Reactions are a lot more fun and worthwhile when somebody reacts like I would and with similar priorities. Great Channel, Brad and Lex!

    Isn't this generally speaking to any and all music fans who say their favorite artist "sold out." It hits harder since they're calling out one (or an alamagation) of a single OG Tool fan. Kinda like "The Pot" in that sort of way. Or Eulogy. Theme here is Tool doesn't take too kindly to hypocrites.

Little wonder that Maynard dealt with enough such types back in the 1990s to piss him off. 🤣🤣🤣

    The drummer actually spent some time in africa(Dont know which country/Countries) with drummers there who played entirely different time signatures and odd rhytms so the tribal drumming comment is kind of accurate, i dont know if tribal drumming is the actual word for that style but it feel primal,tribal and powerful. :) hes specifically mentioned that as a major turning point in his drumming, learning from those people how to do what they did in their style and mixing that into his style.. hes also just a very very good drummer in general.
    Tool Live Drum cam is a great way to experience his drumming from his Point of view and see his techniques and how he weaves and builds sound and crescendos and makes you wonder how someon can put so much effort and physical effort into just one song and still last an entire concert.

    Honestly, when most people accuse a band of "selling out" what they really mean is: "I liked the way you sounded before but you did something new/different and now I don't like they way you sound anymore."

    • @chito2294
      @chito2294 3 года назад

      honestly, thats not what selling out means at all. it means changing ones sound to something more easily digestible to gain more fans and therefore money. usually alienating fans of their earlier works by the "dumbing down" or "pop"ifying of their music

    • @BalbazaktheGreat
      @BalbazaktheGreat 3 года назад

      @@chito2294 Nah. That's what it's supposed to mean, but 9 times out of 10 its just the "fans" being salty. They want to lock artists in a box so they can never evolve.

    I would like to share a story with you guys when it comes to my love for Tool. Back in '92, when I was 17, I just heard this band called Tool for the first time. It was Opiate on cassette . I found out they were playing on South Street at a place called JC Dobbs in Philadelphia, so I had to go. Luckily my band at the time used to play that venue, because I was under age and wouldn't have been able to get in otherwise. Instead I was able to attend the show where there was no more than 25 other people there. One person there had an old school VHS camcorder. This thing was one of those old school Zenith chumpies, which required the over the shoulder bag even.
    Years later I was thinking about that show and saying to myself how happy I would be if that one and only guy who recorded the show were to have posted it on RUclips. Don't you know, he did. ruclips.net/video/GVaDy6yuXnI/видео.html
    If you do actually take a look at this video, you will notice that Maynard did not blink once during the performance. Reason being, him and eye were having a staring contest. I shit you not. This was their last song in the set. I was actually worried that he was going to jump off the stage and shoot me in my fucking head!
    Needless to say, I have been a huge Tool fan ever since and have seen them many time. They always put on the best shows.
    Thanks for reading and/or sharing in my experience.

    Guys, this is one of my favorite Tool songs, when you get the time you should listed to these albums all the way thru. It shows you how the songs kinda blend into one another, not the same sound either, completely different songs but they're Tool. Once you listen you will see....

  • @MattyNoNose

    The song talks to a lot of hardcore music fans who think they know the artist just because they analyze lyrics. Maynard tells the kid "all you know about me is what I sold you, dumb fuck." This song calls out people judging an artist new albums and saying they aren't as good as the old stuff. Calling them a sell out for conforming to a newer sound. Tools older music is way more raw so no doubt these fans existed for the band. Also OGT? Original Gangster Tool. Kid was saying he's an OG for the band trying to validate his opinion.

    The bit i love the most in all the irony of the song, is that the format of the song is the only one on the album that could easily fit into opiate or undertow. Its musicality is a bit more of a rock sound than progressive when compared to the rest of aenima. Its like an ultimate slap in the face to the fan that they can still make music exactly how the fan wants, but they dont give a fk.
