I don’t think Rick James is getting the recognition that his legacy deserves. Everyone seems to be giving Prince and Michael their props(rightfully so) but R.J.’s music is rarely mentioned anymore. He did create his own sound and wrote, arranged, produced and performed hit after hit. He did this for himself and several others. The bro is more than “I’m Rick James bitch!” So, I thank you for your comment!(Geechee Tone)

You guys are exactly right! In addition to the aforementioned comments, many people fail to realize that Rick James became very angry because MTV refused to play his music at the height of his career. That lack of video airplay stymied his ability to crossover and reach a broader audience. He understood the importance of those industry politics were detrimental to his career and when MTV opened their doors to Michael and Prince and became megastars, Rick became a madman within the industry and became embittered. If his albums Street Songs and Throwing Down would have gotten into MTV rotation, I truly believe that we’d be having a totally different story about Rick. Street Songs could have been mentioned in the same vein as Thriller and Purple Rain. No Cap! 💯🎶

Smokey has long said that he had his struggles with cocaine, it just sounds like he didn't do MAJOR drugs WITH Rick tho. Keep in mind Smokey was pretty up there on the Motown business totem pole and Rick was their artist so to speak, so I'm sure he didn't get too crazy while hanging out with him.

Alot like to compare Prince and MJ, but Rick was more comparable to Prince as far as similar musical talents.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on that, Prince was cut from a different cloth, while rick James had a couple of hits, Prince had mega hits, one after the other, and prince just had that special mystic, damn near all Prince's songs would put you on the dance floor.

Rick James was the man in his heyday. Most of his records would get you moving as well, especially in the black community. He wasn't much of a crossover hit. That's where Prince got him beat.
He could write, produce just as well as Prince and played instruments.
Formed groups and proteges same as Prince.
Again His downfall was his ego and drugs. I don't think Rick fully reached his potential. Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
Meanwhile Prince stayed disciplined which is why he went further. Yes he was definitely unique and had something different about him that made him head and shoulders above Rick, but mainly he had his head on right. He stayed Focused.
Creatively they were similar in the beginning. Prince took cues from Rick when they were touring together. Which is why Rick started not liking Prince.
Then Prince got into the more Pop Rock funk to try and compete with Michael.
Rick was a big influence on Prince but he never wanted to say it. Before Purple Rain and 1999, Rick & The Stone City Band were one of the biggest bands.

Vlad I am a longtime fan of Vlad TV and I respect your hustle. However I am an even longer time Smokey Robinson fan. I have to say... this has been a sorry interview. 1 minute long segments... you're not asking detailed questions. You just have the chronology in front of you and are hoping to get him to take over and give you some juice. This was really a waste of Smokeys time. Get better Vlad.
