Rick James (1948-2004) was an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, James began his musical career in his teen years. After forming the locally popular Stone City Band in his hometown of Buffalo in 1977, James finally found success as a recording artist after signing with Motown's Gordy Records, releasing the album Come Get It! in 1978 which produced the hits "You & I" and "Mary Jane". In 1981, James released his most successful album, Street Songs, which included career-defining hits such as "Give It to Me Baby" and "Super Freak", the latter song becoming his biggest crossover single, mixing elements of funk, disco, rock and new wave. James was also known for his soulful ballads such as "Fire & Desire" and "Ebony Eyes". Rapper MC Hammer sampled James' "Super Freak" for his 1990 hit, "U Can't Touch This" which won Best R&B Song at the 1991 Grammy Awards. James received his only Grammy for composing the song. By the early 1990s, James' career was hampered by his drug addiction, and he was embroiled with legal issues. In 1993, James was convicted...while under the influence of crack cocaine, resulting in a three-year sentence at Folsom State Prison. James was released on parole in 1996 and released the album Urban Rapsody in 1997. James' health problems halted his career again after he had a mild stroke during a concert in 1998, and he announced a semi-retirement. Since he burst upon the scene in the late 70's with his unique brand of Punk Funk music, James has been an inspiration to his peers and won the acclaim of audiences and critics alike.
Tom Snyder (1936 - 2007) was an American pioneering television personality and figure in broadcast journalism who brought a no non-sense attitude to broadcast television news. He was best known for his late nigh talk shows Tomorrow (NBC) and The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder (CBS). His engaging style combined with his irascible attitude, made him one of the best-known journalists of his time, back when having a nationally televised and thought-provoking late-night talk show actually meant something. It was a totally different time in television, as the news was delivered as information with no spin or opinion of the newsman. He marked the end of an era.

Tom Snyder is a great interviewer. I like that he doesn’t pretend to be what he’s not and he is non-judgmental of Rick and his guests… You can tell Rick feels comfortable here, like the guy isn’t setting him up, even with the personal questions to make him look stupid or to sensationalize things for ratings. Tom seems genuinely concerned and like he’s having a conversation with another person he finds interesting. Great, great job!
Wonderful comment... i agree
Met Rick in 1997. He was sober at the time and so much fun. Also met Teena Marie twice. She was the best. May they both R.I.P
Rick was definitely sober at this interview, he was clear and concise.
It’s good seeing him in his non intoxicated state. R.I.P. Rick James
The original Super Freak
I don't think I've ever seen Rick sober, wow.
Quite...agreed...articulate.
Like most party animals, Rick himself didn’t care much for being sober.
But I’m glad his boring, sober state makes YOU happy; cuz that’s what’s important! YOU!
Man Rick was a real one he was for the people
as are most people from Buffalo NY :)
@@jimlevinthal3880 say it again
Also he was honest about his drug use .
Rick James was such a smart guy. Emotionally honest no matter what.
Very talented and intelligent yet still he fell for drugs😢😢😢

Yes true !!!
Indeed. Well put.👌
Nicely put. This was refreshing to watch
he's literally advertising a CD. stop romanticising the past
It's hard to believe 19 years have passed since the great Rick James died. What a nice surprise to find this interview; thanks for posting it.
Rick really looked good there, he lived the life many people dream about but few can maintain. RIP Rick, you were one of a kind my brother.

A drug and sex addict who kidnapped and tortured someone.
@@itguru2037 unfortunately it seems like most of them have a dark side, it must be almost impossible to live that lifestyle and not succumb to the many evil temptations.
Rick was that dude! He was so much more than the Chappelle show... It was cool just to see him talking and mixing it up with Tom....sober.
Very well said, I say it all the time. The parody while funny rob him of his Legacy to be known as a Gifted Artist, Writer, Singer, Multi-Instrumentalist, Producer for the people that didn’t get the opportunity to see him dance to his music or see him in concert with Teena. Ahhh those we’re the days when music had instruments not a 808.
💯💯💯
SO MUCH MORE than the Chappelle skit, yes!

Wow I'm just seeing this for the 1st time. A side of Rick James that I've never seen, so much more respect for him.
He was highly intelligent, a great lyricist and vocalist! His voice is truly phenomenal! I haven’t heard a male singer today that can sing like him! ❤
He probably threw his hip out when he was griding his high heels into eddies couch. Unnnniiiitttyyyuy

He shoots straight from the hips.

This is a very important interview regarding addiction.
I wish Rick had been stronger to stay away from those drugs. The drugs were stronger than his will to live. RIP Rick you are missed .
Reminds me of that song Standing on the Top. He was pretty irrelevant until Chapelle's Show made him poppin again. That's allegedly when he started using again.

Rick James was very handsome omg missed 💋🙏😢💓love you boo rip
I always thought Rick was handsome. I adore him. ❤
Aww Paul Mooney was there supporting him RIP TO THE GOATS 💜
Good interview. Rick seemed real sober here.
Rick was sober because he was on a 3-year probation after he got out of jail in 1996 and part of the probation was they will check him every week to see if he had drugs in his system but after his probation was over with he went back doing the same old thing
@@petercrenfield well one of the two, damn it
Rick looked pretty healthy at 50 years old considering his life long abuse of drugs & alcohol. He was a real character and is missed.

Wow! What a great interview! I miss Tom Snyder and Rick James both part of teens and early adulthood. This was b4 Rick had a stroke ad he is lucid, super intelligent and on point completely different from the post stroke days of the Charlie Murphy Dave Chapelle skits where he was clearly impaired. Thanks for posting this, you made my morning!
Your welcome and my pleasure. The sincerity of both men is conveyed in this interview.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Yes Michael, this interview with Rick James and Tom Snyder is one of the best interviews I've seen of Rick James. He was an intelligent man that sadly had drug dependence. It gave his body a lot of ailments late in his life.
I remember Ricks music in high school . I was a teenager in the 80's. The 80's were the best times of my life! It was a different world then. I like Chapelle, but didn't find jokes about alcoholism/drug abuse a laughing matter. It's a shame that Rick couldn't stay off of drugs for good.
I hope you have a great day!
This man is sexy as hell.i don't care what people say Rick James is a class act don't care bout his past addictions he's a musical genius ,a true OG .a true legend.

It's amazing how he looks and articulates himself after all of that abuse and the Rick James stories that are out there. Damn shame he couldn't defeat his demons because here it's like he never touched that stuff and that shit is rare.

Toledo Ohio, 1978 or 79. I was 15, 16 yrs old. I was working at the #1 record shop in the city at the time. It was an urban establishment that catered to the predominantly black community. One day Rick James walks in. My favorite artist.
The record shop owner also promoted all the concerts. I've seen just about every top funk, r&b, soul act live. Met a bunch of them as well.
Most of them were really cool. But Rick James was the best if all for me. He was the realist by far. Rick James headlined. Prince co-headlined Rick closed the show. By the time the tour hit Toledo. They switched & Prince closed.
I overheard the owner/concert promoter tell Rick that Prince asked him to ask Rick to "calm his show down since he's closing now".
Rick James said " Fuck Prince, I ain't calming shit down. I'm Rick James".
This is a true story I made short.
Fast forward. I'm watching Chappelle with my wife. I've told her this story in detail many times plus other chance meetings with others. My mom & brother confirmed. But we're watching the Chappelle show. I didn't see when Rick James said "I'm Rick James Bitch" it had a buzz. But long after. My wife & I was watching Chappelle when that famous " Rick James Bitch" segment aired. This was my 1st time hearing, but this the Chappelle show. I jumped so high off the couch, & was that's Rick James. That's exactly how he talk. I knew those skits about Rick had to be true. It was an perfect imitation of Rick James. But back when I met Rick, he only said " I'm Rick James".
And that part sounded exactly how I heard it on the Chappelle show.
True story everybody.
Truth Indeed
Great interview. Who would have thought he would die a few years later in 2004.
Thanks for posting.
Your welcome/my pleasure.
